What is Shopify?

Shopify is a commerce platform that allows anyone to easily sell online, at a retail location, and everywhere in between. Shopify offers a professional online storefront, a payment solution to accept credit cards, and the Shopify POS application to power retail sales. Shopify is used by over 90,000 retailers in 100 different countries.

As a SaaS, Shopify's stability and always-on availability are touted. The eCommerce site presents the customary inventory and presentation controls typical of eCommerce solutions. Items are organized into collections, or using smart collections customize groupings to fit the merchandise (e.g. less than $20 items, gift ideas, bundles, etc.). Content management features (e.g. a blog) are present for tailoring the look and interactivity of the site.

For selling online, the $14 Starter pack includes a basic eCommerce site with 1GB of storage, chat & email support, and support for 25 listings. The $29 Basic pack includes POS and unlimited products, as well as fraud analysis tools. The $79 Professional Pack bumps storage space from 1GB to 5GB and adds gift cards, professional reports, and abandoned cart recovery. Finally, Unlimited, at $179 per month, makes space unlimited, and provides advanced reporting and real-time carrier shipping.

I offer Shopify to my website design clients if they need an eCommerce website designed. It's a great platform for eCommerce, not so much in terms of development but for the user that's going to be adding products to the website.
  • Easy to add products.
  • Quick setup.
  • Amazing interface.
  • Difficult to develop.
  • Limited features and quite restricted.
  • Apps are in place to make Shopify more money.
Shopify is well-suited for someone looking to sell products online and would like the basic features of an eCommerce store.

Shopify is being used by our organization so that we can sell online. It makes our life much easier by not having to create a full e-commerce site from scratch.
  • Shopify makes it super easy to be able to list products.
  • Saved us time on developing site.
  • Monthly fee is much cheaper than building a full on website.
  • Could be better with some more options for customization.
  • Not have their own language.
  • Make it lower code for more customization.
Shopify is great for any business selling online. I would definitely recommend it for just about any business if they are selling any sort of physical or digital product.

Many of our clients use Shopify as an avenue for their retail space, and we have familiarized ourselves with the software and especially how to integrate it with the Amazon and Walmart side of 3P selling.
  • Shopify has a great platform for integrating with Amazon and Shopify.
  • Shopify is an easy way to pass over the listings from there to Walmart.
  • Their integration tool with Walmart has some issues that need resolving.
  • The ability to have multi-pack fulfillment via Amazon for Shopify orders is way too complicated.
As far as integration with Amazon and Walmart 3P, this is the best ecommerce platform we have worked with. It integrates very easily and has so much support that any issue that comes up can be easily resolved!

Shopify is our ecommerce solution for selling our products. We center our entire company around Shopify for our frond end web presence to fulfillment to inventory management. We also use it for interfacing with advertising mediums such as social media and email marketing. We would not have a business without it.
  • Shopify is excellent with easy of setup for basic sites
  • It interfaces with virtually every other tool
  • They offer some really great startup capabilities like purchasing a URL, setting up email etc.
  • The customizations to the front end of the cart are somewhat limiting. I found myself wishing for more flexibility.
  • Their support is pretty good but it would be nice to have the options to call someone at startup on the lesser plans.
  • I dont like that they charge you a fee for every transaction. I have used other carts that do not charge a transaction fee.
Shopify is fantastic for the very small business who is getting started with ecommerce. They have great tools for getting a site off the ground and a product available for sale. They have a lot of great tools for those who are starting from scratch and someone with very little knowledge can get up and running in a day. For large companies it would require a lot more manual customization to fit. Also their per transaction fee can be prohibitive for some scenarios.

I am an Independent Contractor and was asked to build an E-Commerce Webpage for a Client using Shopify. I am currently adding elements and adjusting the theme to fit our needs. It is not a hard program to jump into and get started, it just lacks things we are specifically looking for from a design perspective. But for building a store, it has everything you need.
  • The store layout is clear when it comes to uploading your products.
  • Inventory options, Shipping, Variant, and more are easily adjusted
  • Pricing has a feature that let's you adjust your price to see what your profit will be based on what you spent on the product. This is very handy, you can see your cost-per-item, the margin, and profit.
  • Themes are lacking.
  • Even when uploading your own themes, it is hard to adjust the background to fit instead of fill.
  • The Font! Needs a ton more options than the few available.
Some may find Shopify useful when starting a retail business online because as I mentioned before, it is very easy to upload products and adjust the price, shipping, quantity, keep track of sales, and even editing your website SEO...yes, there are a lot of pluses for creating a simple online store. But I think if you want to "Design" the store with your own themes or font, this may not be a good choice unless you have a background in web design and decide to upload your own ZIP, then this is perfect. So, my conclusion is that it isn't beginner-friendly in the design department.

We used Shopify for our online store for all our products. It solved the problem of having an e-commerce presence. It allowed us to have both physical in stock items as well as drop shipping items. It was also very easy to use for my 13yo son and business partner.
  • Simple to use
  • Great app add ons
  • Great podcast to learn from others
  • Being able to integrate with Square as a merchant
  • Integrate with Oberlo as a feature, not a separate app
It is easy to use for someone with no coding or design experience. It’s simple to set up a store and add products. When adding the Oberlo app, it’s makes using and shipping from AliExpress extremely easy.

When a web-design client wants to sell something online I find Shopify to be the most cost-effective, fastest, and easiest way to get their store up and running. Even though most of my small business clientele already have a "website" I find myself recommending Spotify in addition to whatever online presence they may already have.
  • Quick setup
  • Cost effective
  • Clean design
  • Beginner friendly
  • No email hosting
  • Add-ons can be expensive
  • Valuable features come at additional cost
You can't really go wrong picking Shopify if you want to sell a few items online. It offers so many ways to sell and makes it very easy to do so. Any small business with a few items for sale will love the tools Shopify offers and the low cost/speed to selling online. However, if you have hundreds of SKUs, complicated customizations and shipping requirements, etc. you may need a more robust tool.

Shopify is being used as an eCommerce platform for some of our websites in order to sell some items digitally on our website. Not all of our organization uses this, but we do use it for those businesses that are selling products online. It helps sell products easily online.
  • The platform is very easy to set up.
  • Very intuitive software.
  • Customer support is very helpful.
  • Customization can be difficult if it is more in depth, as you may need to code.
  • The price is a little steep compared to other platforms.
  • You have to learn the Shopify liquid language.
I would definitely recommend Shopify, as it is one of the top ecommerce platforms online and there is a reason why so many people use it. The only reason I wouldn't recommend it is if the price is an issue.

One of our clients, a city farm in East London, uses Shopify to sell hand-made gifts, seasonal plants and farm produce. This is the online version of their bricks-and-mortar shop at the Farm, which only opens on weekends. As a charity, the Farm has to watch its budgets carefully. It wasn't economically workable to have the physical shop open during the week with the footfall.
  • Easy to set up
  • Manage orders easily
  • Marketing tools
  • More customisation on the homepage (I'd like to see an option for all/filtered products, not just popular this week)
  • Had a sidebar filter for price, attributes etc
Anyone can start using Shopify and figure out how to add products and launch their store. It's very easy to use and the pricing is great compared with using WooCommerce and WordPress. They handle all the maintenance and security for you.

It's positioned more for micro businesses and small organisations or as a starting point. As you ramp up, I recommend Adobe Commerce (aka Magento)

We use Shopify for our company B2B website. We added an app that allows us to have a "hidden side" you can sign on with wholesale pricing for our retailers only so consumers can see the products but can't buy directly on the site since we are 100% B2B. We also use the buy button store to hold virtual trunk shows for consumers allowing them to buy directly for that evening only.
  • Easy to add new products with multiple images quickly with a very professional outcome.
  • Easy to create a new collection twice a year when we come out with new products.
  • Easy to keep pricing hidden from consumers and from retailers until they are approved for an account.
  • I wish the graphics were a bit easier to work with so I could resize and crop images from within the program.
  • I wish I didn't have to add coding from a professional to make my headers work seamlessly on all platforms.
  • I wish it was a little more of a "drag and drop" platform for moving and duplicating images
Shopify is really great if you are looking for an online website that can sell inventory and fulfill orders. I don't use it to fulfill orders because all of our product is hand-made after the order has been placed. We don't stock products so the fulfillment features don't really apply to us. I use it to print an order and then enter the order into our own proprietary software program to run a production for the pieces that were sold.

I work for an early stage medical device startup and we have been working towards selling our products for some time. We have always planned to have an online marketplace and Shopify has helped us accomplish that goal much faster than we thought possible. It is used across our entire organization as the marketplace for all of our products.
  • Great for starting a business online or moving one to online
  • Great with helping in marketing campaigns
  • Intuitive dashboard with several easy to understand metrics about sales and transactions
  • Shopify has had everything we have needed to move our business online!
I would highly recommend Shopify to any small business or startup that wants to bring their business online. It is a great tool to get a marketplace up and running and has many built in tools to improve sales. It is agnostic to the type of business and is universally useful.

Shopify is our primary platform for selling our products online. It runs our entire online presence. It's used by our entire organization. We sell products, manage discounts and subscriptions, and run our website all off of Shopify (and Shopify 3rd-party plugins). Overall it's a great tool, as we are able to easily manage our inventory, track customers, and integrate with other platforms to further enhance Shopify.
  • Inventory management
  • Reporting on volume / profit
  • Customer tracking
  • Support of app integrations with other platforms.
  • Overall the interface can just be difficult to navigate. I know there's a LOT in Shopify, but the interface just feels overwhelming and not intuitive.
  • Standards and clarity on what apps will work with what versions so customers know the dangers before installing it.
For a small store or side-hustle, Squarespace would be a better choice. However, if you have an entire business that's driven strictly by selling products, Shopify is a great asset. Just make sure you have a technical-oriented person available to contact if you run into issues. Sometimes you have to get technical fast, which can feel overwhelming.

We have used Shopify for a number of clients in the past, as well as providing it to current clients that are looking for an e-commerce platform. We have also used Shopify for ourselves for various projects where we needed to sell something directly to a consumer.
  • E-Commerce
  • Good Content Management System
  • Easy hosting
  • Integrations with other software
Shopify is great for any client looking to sell direct to consumer through their website that hasn't reached a level that would require them to implement a bigger e-commerce platform. If you have a limited (50 or fewer) product offering, this can be a wonderful platform that is easy to use and manage your inventory, etc.

Shopify is a great platform for any individual or business that sells online. We have used it in the past for our pride store during pride month to sell gear online. It makes e-commerce easy and does not require a development team to get running. Only some of our team members use this tool, but most can at least log into the store and track analytics.
  • Shopify makes selling super easy.
  • You do not have to constantly manage and update the site.
  • Basic customization is super easy and can be down with the user interface.
  • If you want to code additionally, you need to know the Shopify language and how it works.
  • Can be pretty expensive since we only sell for about a month out of the year but want to keep the website up and running.
  • I wish more customization was provided within the user interface.
Shopify is super helpful for anyone selling online. It is powerful and does not take much effort to be able to get a store up and running quickly.

Shopify is the core shopping experience for our customers. Used to manage the online shopping layer for a number of users across several states of Europe. It became the core analytics and customer relationship management product because of its ease of use and accessibility.
  • Great plugins
  • Fast support times
  • One click checkouts
  • More advanced functions even without plugins.
Shopify is very well suited for businesses of many sizes. In our example (a small company selling several products), it became the number one shopping experience layer. With a number of plugins, we can enhance the experience as much as we want, for example, to promote products across influencers.

I will, and have, recommended Shopify several times. It is the best way for small business ideas to come to life in an easy, streamlined fashion. The plug-and-play accessibility for building a website turns any design/programming novice into a professional in no time. It is well worth the money and pays for itself in no time at all.

I actually stopped using Shopify after a few months with them. I have tried pretty much every ecommerce software over the last several years and had started up a new line to my business several months ago and wanted to try Shopify since I know a lot of people use it.
  • They are popular, so they advertise themselves well.
  • They just came out with "handshake" - a wholesale division of their company.
  • Their pricing is in line with others for the most part.
  • [I feel it is] SUPER user unfriendly. I have built MANY websites over the last 20 years not just for myself but for others and Shopify was one of the most difficult.
  • I hate their sign in process just to log in to my store.
I honestly wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

It is being used by the web/marketing department at TheeDigital. We build websites for other companies, and some of our ecommerce companies use it. I have implemented it for several of them from the ground up as part of the Shopify Custom Referral program.
  • UX - easy to use
  • Great out of the box design
  • Stock - syncs well with apps
  • Not easily customizable functionality
  • Not great for blogging
  • Experience has a lot to do with the theme you choose - if you choose a bad one, you're making life tougher for yourself
It is really well suited for a shop that does not need to be too customized. If you are selling regular wares (clothing, etc) then you should have no problem. If you need to create custom goods, you have to start creating custom solutions which are a lot harder to implement than in other CRMs like WordPress/WooCommerce.

Shopify is used for the website of one of our e-commerce brands to power our checkout process and experience. Previously this site was on Adobe Business Catalyst for a number of years.
  • Easy to use and very powerful to support continued growth
  • App Store Marketplace makes integrations a breeze
  • Accept payments without merchant account and payment gateway hassles
  • Email marketing is an added cost compared to the previous system we were on, but this isn't a big issue
Shopify is easy to get started with and will grow with you. When migrating our existing e-commerce store that has been running for 8 years now, Shopify was the clear choice because it would be able to handle what we needed, plus even had options to give us benefits we didn't previously have available to us, because of Shopify's extensive app marketplace.

If you have a custom built e-commerce solution that is working well for you and is able to continue growing without headaches, then moving to Shopify might not be worth the effort. However, if you are starting a new online store today, Shopify is an easy choice that you cannot go wrong with.

We use Shopify as our ecommerce platform for our online store. It offers all the features we currently need and is very easy to use. We have our products in different warehouses and with Shopify we can manage the inventory properly. It offers great templates for the store and we easily were able to build the store based on our needs. Another aspect of Shopify that I like, is the robust Settings section that allows us to control everything we need in our store.
  • Easy-to-build templates
  • Great product and inventory management
  • Variety of payment methods
  • Various apps to cover all our needs
  • Would like to see more flexibility with Shopify Payments
  • Cancelation of a previously-paused account was a bit of a hassle (this happened for our other store)
Shopify is great for businesses of different sizes. You can be a one-man store and easily use Shopify to run your ecommerce business. Or you can be an established store with hundreds or millions of dollars in revenue and still use Shopify successfully. It provides all the features you need to run an ecommerce business and also has a great app marketplace to cover all your potential needs.

We use Shopify as part of our sales process and web prescience. This product is used company wide with the objective of being able to provide our customers with self service option for purchases that range from services all the way to full product offerings. This application has been instrumental in providing us with the ability to create shopping cart processes without the need for dedicated programmers to manage the storefront.
  • Easy shopping cart delivery
  • Great integrations with payment processing and other platforms
  • Ability to manage payment terms based on services would be highly welcomed
Shopify is greatly suited for those organizations that want a quick and easy to use store front experience without the need to keep dedicated programmers on staff that know how to create shopping carts on the web or know how to process payments through payment processors. Even though there are tons of options, Shopify falls short when you want to provide fully customizable shopping experiences for your customers based on the offerings being sold.

We use Shopify and Shopify Plus as a platform of choice for clients needing ecommerce capabilities and looking to migrate away from or avoid complexity and costs of self hosted platforms.
  • App marketplace to extend the capability of the core platform
  • Easy to use but powerful admin console to allow more people to managed business
  • Pure cloud based platform, no upgrade costs
  • Inventory management reporting
  • More basic theme customization
  • More product page customization
Excellent for startups, small, medium and larger ecommerce businesses. They are new to the B2B space so it may be less suitable to pure B2B businesses but we are currently evaluating those capabilities vs. other alternatives.

We use Shopify for e-commerce as our storefront. It's the platform where we sell all of our products, and it also serves as a direct link to our customers. Additionally we use Shopify as an acquisition tool for our newsletters. It is generally only used by the marketing team, though the art team has also been involved to help design a storefront that aligns with our brand.
  • Ecommerce store
  • Ability for custom e-commerce store to align with brand
  • Shopping transactions and payment
  • Newsletter and social media integration
  • Shopify only has baseline functionality. If your store requires certain features, or if you are interested in providing a more engaging storefront with expanded features, you have to buy separate apps for each individual feature.
  • Because apps can stack up for each individual feature you may need, there are times where certain apps don't work well with others or disallow other features.
  • Although one of the platform's strengths is the ability to customize for your brand, unless you're a developer, there are no easy tools that are accessible to do it on your own. You really do need a developer to do it for you.
From a basic storefront standpoint, Shopify makes it really easy to have a functioning e-commerce store built to your brand's specifications. Where it can get complicated is based on what features you need for your store, as additional features require additional apps and funds. For bigger brands, this may not be a problem, but for smaller companies, there is definitely an escalating financial cost.

At MK Media Co, we had a few eCommerce brands whose stores were hosted on Shopify. I managed influencer and affiliate marketing efforts through Shopify for three online stores/brands. I also worked with Shopify apps on all three stores to improve the website, landing page, social media and other marketing and sales functionality.
  • Ease of Use
  • Set-up is really fast
  • Has great tools and add-ons for growing brands
  • Integrates with social media platforms
  • Integrates with marketing efforts to see what's working
  • Integrating with custom checkouts is difficult
  • Site speed slows with certain plugins
Shopify is a great eCommerce platform for new online stores and brands. It's so easy to set-up and looks great out of the box. Pricing is transparent and works with growing companies. The plugins, integrations and add-ons are where the real power is though. You can start influencer, social media, paid search campaigns, etc. all from within the platform.
