What is Shopify?

Shopify is a commerce platform that allows anyone to easily sell online, at a retail location, and everywhere in between. Shopify offers a professional online storefront, a payment solution to accept credit cards, and the Shopify POS application to power retail sales. Shopify is used by over 90,000 retailers in 100 different countries.

As a SaaS, Shopify's stability and always-on availability are touted. The eCommerce site presents the customary inventory and presentation controls typical of eCommerce solutions. Items are organized into collections, or using smart collections customize groupings to fit the merchandise (e.g. less than $20 items, gift ideas, bundles, etc.). Content management features (e.g. a blog) are present for tailoring the look and interactivity of the site.

For selling online, the $14 Starter pack includes a basic eCommerce site with 1GB of storage, chat & email support, and support for 25 listings. The $29 Basic pack includes POS and unlimited products, as well as fraud analysis tools. The $79 Professional Pack bumps storage space from 1GB to 5GB and adds gift cards, professional reports, and abandoned cart recovery. Finally, Unlimited, at $179 per month, makes space unlimited, and provides advanced reporting and real-time carrier shipping.

Shopify is a fantastic tool to bring a web store front to market for any range of small or large products. Shirts and hats or mugs, to pens and promo items. Shopify is the most effective way you can build a simple store and start selling. The great part is you can basically plug it in to most existing web systems such as existing cms or domains without touching that.
  • Customizable design
  • Smooth purchase process
  • Ensure customer faithfulness
  • Simplified troubleshooting
  • Reduce overhead
  • Can run into issues when adding POS with additional costs
  • Costs creep up on you as you add on services
Shopify is well suited for people who have something to sell and need to get it in front of people in whatever ways possible to start moving merchandise. Shopify works best for products like fashion and other items like clothing but really works well for almost anything. You may run into some hiccups trying to add detailed customization with specific or too broad of a range of options per item. It gets clunky.

Shopify is our primary platform for selling our products online. It runs our entire online presence. It's used by our entire organization. We sell products, manage discounts and subscriptions, and run our website all off of Shopify (and Shopify 3rd-party plugins). Overall it's a great tool, as we are able to easily manage our inventory, track customers, and integrate with other platforms to further enhance Shopify.
  • Inventory management
  • Reporting on volume / profit
  • Customer tracking
  • Support of app integrations with other platforms.
  • Overall the interface can just be difficult to navigate. I know there's a LOT in Shopify, but the interface just feels overwhelming and not intuitive.
  • Standards and clarity on what apps will work with what versions so customers know the dangers before installing it.
For a small store or side-hustle, Squarespace would be a better choice. However, if you have an entire business that's driven strictly by selling products, Shopify is a great asset. Just make sure you have a technical-oriented person available to contact if you run into issues. Sometimes you have to get technical fast, which can feel overwhelming.

We helped a client set up a Shopify store. The client needed a single platform that can easily integrate with their current blog and products could be imported easily. Shopify's flexibility helped us to make multiple customizations and design changes as per the client requirements.
  • Can be setup easily without any prior programming knowledge
  • Extensive documentation is available online for support
  • Customizations can be made easily by making minor code changes
  • Excellent and fast customer support
  • Live previews are available which help you to preview the changes before publishing
  • Wide range of extensions and plugins available for any additional functionality requirement
  • SSL encryption for your website and payments gateway
  • Fast and flexible options available to import and export products and customers data
  • SEO capabilities needs a lot of improvement
  • Follows a strict URL structure, need more flexibility to manage URLs as per requirement
It is well suited for medium to large businesses which have a large portfolio of products and services to be offered. It can be set up easily and customized based on the requirements. Also, the cost is another important factor to be considered, as with Shopify new themes and plugins need to be purchased separately.

We have used Shopify for a number of clients in the past, as well as providing it to current clients that are looking for an e-commerce platform. We have also used Shopify for ourselves for various projects where we needed to sell something directly to a consumer.
  • E-Commerce
  • Good Content Management System
  • Easy hosting
  • Integrations with other software
Shopify is great for any client looking to sell direct to consumer through their website that hasn't reached a level that would require them to implement a bigger e-commerce platform. If you have a limited (50 or fewer) product offering, this can be a wonderful platform that is easy to use and manage your inventory, etc.

Shopify is a great platform for any individual or business that sells online. We have used it in the past for our pride store during pride month to sell gear online. It makes e-commerce easy and does not require a development team to get running. Only some of our team members use this tool, but most can at least log into the store and track analytics.
  • Shopify makes selling super easy.
  • You do not have to constantly manage and update the site.
  • Basic customization is super easy and can be down with the user interface.
  • If you want to code additionally, you need to know the Shopify language and how it works.
  • Can be pretty expensive since we only sell for about a month out of the year but want to keep the website up and running.
  • I wish more customization was provided within the user interface.
Shopify is super helpful for anyone selling online. It is powerful and does not take much effort to be able to get a store up and running quickly.

Shopify is the core shopping experience for our customers. Used to manage the online shopping layer for a number of users across several states of Europe. It became the core analytics and customer relationship management product because of its ease of use and accessibility.
  • Great plugins
  • Fast support times
  • One click checkouts
  • More advanced functions even without plugins.
Shopify is very well suited for businesses of many sizes. In our example (a small company selling several products), it became the number one shopping experience layer. With a number of plugins, we can enhance the experience as much as we want, for example, to promote products across influencers.

Shopify is the backbone of our small business. It is being used to support our entire website, as well as the e-commerce process. It is used by the whole organization on the backend for sales, metics, reporting, etc -- and is used by our customers exclusively on the front end by hosting the website and all of our purchasable inventory.

I will, and have, recommended Shopify several times. It is the best way for small business ideas to come to life in an easy, streamlined fashion. The plug-and-play accessibility for building a website turns any design/programming novice into a professional in no time. It is well worth the money and pays for itself in no time at all.

I actually stopped using Shopify after a few months with them. I have tried pretty much every ecommerce software over the last several years and had started up a new line to my business several months ago and wanted to try Shopify since I know a lot of people use it.
  • They are popular, so they advertise themselves well.
  • They just came out with "handshake" - a wholesale division of their company.
  • Their pricing is in line with others for the most part.
  • [I feel it is] SUPER user unfriendly. I have built MANY websites over the last 20 years not just for myself but for others and Shopify was one of the most difficult.
  • I hate their sign in process just to log in to my store.
I honestly wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

It is being used by the web/marketing department at TheeDigital. We build websites for other companies, and some of our ecommerce companies use it. I have implemented it for several of them from the ground up as part of the Shopify Custom Referral program.
  • UX - easy to use
  • Great out of the box design
  • Stock - syncs well with apps
  • Not easily customizable functionality
  • Not great for blogging
  • Experience has a lot to do with the theme you choose - if you choose a bad one, you're making life tougher for yourself
It is really well suited for a shop that does not need to be too customized. If you are selling regular wares (clothing, etc) then you should have no problem. If you need to create custom goods, you have to start creating custom solutions which are a lot harder to implement than in other CRMs like WordPress/WooCommerce.

Shopify is used for the website of one of our e-commerce brands to power our checkout process and experience. Previously this site was on Adobe Business Catalyst for a number of years.
  • Easy to use and very powerful to support continued growth
  • App Store Marketplace makes integrations a breeze
  • Accept payments without merchant account and payment gateway hassles
  • Email marketing is an added cost compared to the previous system we were on, but this isn't a big issue
Shopify is easy to get started with and will grow with you. When migrating our existing e-commerce store that has been running for 8 years now, Shopify was the clear choice because it would be able to handle what we needed, plus even had options to give us benefits we didn't previously have available to us, because of Shopify's extensive app marketplace.

If you have a custom built e-commerce solution that is working well for you and is able to continue growing without headaches, then moving to Shopify might not be worth the effort. However, if you are starting a new online store today, Shopify is an easy choice that you cannot go wrong with.

We use Shopify as our ecommerce platform for our online store. It offers all the features we currently need and is very easy to use. We have our products in different warehouses and with Shopify we can manage the inventory properly. It offers great templates for the store and we easily were able to build the store based on our needs. Another aspect of Shopify that I like, is the robust Settings section that allows us to control everything we need in our store.
  • Easy-to-build templates
  • Great product and inventory management
  • Variety of payment methods
  • Various apps to cover all our needs
  • Would like to see more flexibility with Shopify Payments
  • Cancelation of a previously-paused account was a bit of a hassle (this happened for our other store)
Shopify is great for businesses of different sizes. You can be a one-man store and easily use Shopify to run your ecommerce business. Or you can be an established store with hundreds or millions of dollars in revenue and still use Shopify successfully. It provides all the features you need to run an ecommerce business and also has a great app marketplace to cover all your potential needs.

We use Shopify as part of our sales process and web prescience. This product is used company wide with the objective of being able to provide our customers with self service option for purchases that range from services all the way to full product offerings. This application has been instrumental in providing us with the ability to create shopping cart processes without the need for dedicated programmers to manage the storefront.
  • Easy shopping cart delivery
  • Great integrations with payment processing and other platforms
  • Ability to manage payment terms based on services would be highly welcomed
Shopify is greatly suited for those organizations that want a quick and easy to use store front experience without the need to keep dedicated programmers on staff that know how to create shopping carts on the web or know how to process payments through payment processors. Even though there are tons of options, Shopify falls short when you want to provide fully customizable shopping experiences for your customers based on the offerings being sold.

Shopify is an amazing resource for any organization that is looking to sell goods online. It simplifies the entire e-commerce process and makes it incredibly easy to monetize a company's goods. We have not come across another e-commerce platform that has been as simple to use and implement as Shopify.
  • create new stores
  • monetize all products
  • one stop shop for all things e-commerce
  • free trial could be longer
  • increased app options
  • increased customization
Shopify is best for companies that are looking to increase their e-commerce sales and open up new revenue streams. It is incredibly easy to set up, and offers the ability to try it out on a free trial basis before unlocking the premium version, which includes more bells and whistles and features to increase the offering.

We use Shopify and Shopify Plus as a platform of choice for clients needing ecommerce capabilities and looking to migrate away from or avoid complexity and costs of self hosted platforms.
  • App marketplace to extend the capability of the core platform
  • Easy to use but powerful admin console to allow more people to managed business
  • Pure cloud based platform, no upgrade costs
  • Inventory management reporting
  • More basic theme customization
  • More product page customization
Excellent for startups, small, medium and larger ecommerce businesses. They are new to the B2B space so it may be less suitable to pure B2B businesses but we are currently evaluating those capabilities vs. other alternatives.

We use Shopify for e-commerce as our storefront. It's the platform where we sell all of our products, and it also serves as a direct link to our customers. Additionally we use Shopify as an acquisition tool for our newsletters. It is generally only used by the marketing team, though the art team has also been involved to help design a storefront that aligns with our brand.
  • Ecommerce store
  • Ability for custom e-commerce store to align with brand
  • Shopping transactions and payment
  • Newsletter and social media integration
  • Shopify only has baseline functionality. If your store requires certain features, or if you are interested in providing a more engaging storefront with expanded features, you have to buy separate apps for each individual feature.
  • Because apps can stack up for each individual feature you may need, there are times where certain apps don't work well with others or disallow other features.
  • Although one of the platform's strengths is the ability to customize for your brand, unless you're a developer, there are no easy tools that are accessible to do it on your own. You really do need a developer to do it for you.
From a basic storefront standpoint, Shopify makes it really easy to have a functioning e-commerce store built to your brand's specifications. Where it can get complicated is based on what features you need for your store, as additional features require additional apps and funds. For bigger brands, this may not be a problem, but for smaller companies, there is definitely an escalating financial cost.

At MK Media Co, we had a few eCommerce brands whose stores were hosted on Shopify. I managed influencer and affiliate marketing efforts through Shopify for three online stores/brands. I also worked with Shopify apps on all three stores to improve the website, landing page, social media and other marketing and sales functionality.
  • Ease of Use
  • Set-up is really fast
  • Has great tools and add-ons for growing brands
  • Integrates with social media platforms
  • Integrates with marketing efforts to see what's working
  • Integrating with custom checkouts is difficult
  • Site speed slows with certain plugins
Shopify is a great eCommerce platform for new online stores and brands. It's so easy to set-up and looks great out of the box. Pricing is transparent and works with growing companies. The plugins, integrations and add-ons are where the real power is though. You can start influencer, social media, paid search campaigns, etc. all from within the platform.

I had a client who was looking to transition to a new commerce platform from an established website for their decade old business. Their previous website was cumbersome to maintain on an IT level, too complex for staffers to manage (add, update, delete) products, and clunky and dated for consumers.

Shopify handily addresses all these issues by providing a robust, user-friendly backend and stylish front-end for consumers.
  • Ease of product creation and management.
  • Zero ongoing IT maintenance issues.
  • Streamlined and stylish consumer-facing website.
  • Product categories and subcategories are time consuming and non-standard to implement.
  • Building out the front end was more time consuming than expected.
  • Available plugins of widely varied quality.
For small businesses selling a set range of products, Shopify is a dream to set up and manage. If you're not looking to hire an IT department, or deal wth web developer, and are looking to outsource all that work, Shopify is your best bet.

Shopify's powerful commerce tools can make your online store ready to compete with pretty much anything else on the web, and can scale to whatever traffic your store generates, which is a great comfort when your products go viral and suddenly sales explode.

I am currently in Shopify's partner program. I build web stores for clients who are looking to start there own E-Commerce store. We also help customers who already have Shopify stores. We help them grow and upgrade their current stores. I am able to manage all parts of Shopify without having the need for more employees.
  • Shopify makes it easy to create new development stores.
  • They also make it easy to request access to customers that already have a store.
  • Shopify is a one-stop shop for all e-commerce needs including domain and hosting services.
  • It would help if I could offer my clients more than a 14 day free trial.
  • The web design can become confusing on their platform.
  • It would be nice to have more app options.
Shopify is great for someone looking to become an affiliate marketer. They have multiple features to help you sell their product. I would say it is a little less appropriate for people who have limited web design experience. It can be a little confusing when you are first starting out. Overall though, I would say that it is easy to use.

We use Shopify for our online e-commerce store. We use it throughout our whole organization. It's solving the business problem of having an easy e-commerce solution. The back-end system makes it easy for everyone to use. We have a bunch of Shopify sites for each of our brands that our company uses.
  • Easy back-end system
  • Beautiful and customizable templates
  • Collecting payments
  • I'd like to see more free templates that are similar to Squarespace
  • Better designs for websites that only have 1-3 products
  • Make customization easier for non-tech savvy people
Shopify is good if you have a lot of products and are looking for an e-commerce store. It handles many products better than squarespace, and is easier to manage/learn than websites like volusion. It's a great website for starting off. It feels less appropriate if you only have 1 product - use something like squarespace instead.

I am a web designer and have used Shopify for the set up of e-commerce sites. Shopify is the best all-around option for e-commerce websites. It is particularly good for those with a large online store that need the functionality that Shopify has as well as the integrations it has.
  • Easy to use
  • Great UI
  • Scalable
  • Great SEO functionality
  • It is more expensive to use than alternatives like WooCommerce.
  • There are big expensive jumps between the Shopify plans.
Shopify is great for a business that has a large array of products, needs to be able to manage the backend in house and not by a web designer, as well as needs the quick and easy set up of Shopify.

We consult with clients on implementing Shopify as an online storefront and e-commerce solution.
  • Shopify is extremely user-friendly.
  • Excellent website and mobile platforms
  • Excellent inventory and sales management
  • Shopify has improved integrations and implementation over the years. That used to be my biggest struggle.
  • Some industries still struggle with custom and large truck shipping options.
Shopify is excellent for SMB, and even some large businesses, dependent on the product or service offered. For companies with more proprietary needs, like insurance, bookings, etc. Shopify might not be the best fit.

We're using Shopify to sell a large volume of consumer products. There are multiple users within the company actively using the platform. It serves as a versatile and dependable eCommerce solution that allows us to make changes to the product pages quickly and easily. The analytics data is robust and helps us keep an eye on KPIs throughout the day.
  • Makes it real easy to create duplicate versions of product pages for testing various elements.
  • Displays a wide array of reports and analytics
  • Real easy to create and implement discount codes
  • Some of the templates are not easy to reconfigure.
  • Some Sales reports like "Sales by Discount" have a lag time of around two days before data populates.
  • Big jump in pricing from "Shopify" to "Advanced Shopify."
Shopify is great for companies with an array of products and discount offers. Easy to keep track of everything and edit as needed. Not too many cases where it's not well suited; performs well at all levels. Like any platform, there will likely be a few areas where you wish it worked differently, but it just takes a little time to get to know the complexities.

Shopify is a great way to promote and distribute the company's products. It also functions as another way to sell in a digital way. If you do not feel like investing in a web developer, Shopify gives you the tools so you can create your landing site to start selling on day one.
  • You can list unlimited products on your site
  • No bandwidth or storage limit like other competitors
  • Share your account with peers
  • It has a great dashboard for order tracking and other features.
  • Web design might be a little bit antique
  • Customer service lacks detailed issue solving
  • Point of sale needs to generate more reports that can be useful for a business
Shopify was great when used for products that were at a discounted price and we want them to sell out by marking them with a low price. This prevents having too many low-priced items on our website. It is less appropriate if you want to raise a product as a startup.

Shopify is being used as the eCommerce backend for two of my clients' websites. They use it to set up and sell products online along with the design and layout of the website itself. It's a great single-solution platform for most online sales and the management and creation of products for the stores.
  • Simple and easy product setup and inventory management.
  • Wide selection of design templates both free and paid.
  • Sometimes the navigation between pages when editing the site can be a little confusing.
  • Small amount of website basics are recommended for the site setup.
If you're looking for a simple one-stop shop to get your online business and eCommerce up and running Shopify is an excellent solution. Super easy to set up with just a small amount of website knowledge and extremely easy to set up and customize products. Excellent inventory management and integration with several shipping and postage apps. I would recommend having a basics knowledge of websites and eCommerce or it could get a little confusing. Their support is excellent though if you get stuck.
