The main reason to use Sitecore Experience Manager is if you want to develop something completely custom. Sitecore is best suited for very robust, multi-page websites. If you need to build out a website that supports multiple product lines, Sitecore could be a good option.

After evaluating OpenText, we found that Sitecore has stronger capabilities to utilize the content for personalization and contextual marketing. We also favored Sitecore's user permissions, roles, and content creation processes out of the box.

Sitecore was evaluated by our practice next to two other Content management systems 4 years ago. Sitecore scored the highest following a series of questions related to product stability, scalability, ease of use, and a host of other categories.

WordPress and Wix are great solutions for a small business or a solopreneur who's just looking to get a simple website up and running. For larger businesses with more robust content, I think Sitecore offers a bit more flexibility. Wix and WordPress are both really simple to get up and running, but I have found it cumbersome to make changes and grow the sites once they're in place. Sitecore makes it really easy to do both. All in all, it really depends on your needs.

Sitefinity is improving but at the time of decision making it had nothing that could compare with the A/B testing and personalisation features that Sitecore offers. This was a key differentiator and ultimately ensured Sitecore was purchased. WordPress isn't really comparable and isn't within our technology stack, which is mostly Microsoft.

Based on my perspective these are the main reasons for choosing Sitecore over others.
  • It is a one-stop shop for all customer engagement platforms with a lot of developer communities over the web.
  • It is a .NET based platform as there are a lot of .Net developers in the market.
  • Availability of Sitecore accelerators which enables to go to market quickly.
  • Automated deployments supported across environments using TFS for code and other tools like TDS, Unicorn etc., for content deployments

The decision to select Sitecore was not ultimately mine, but the fact that we were able to leverage in-house Microsoft .Net (C#) experience on a platform that had a library of extensions, but also allowed us to customize and keep private our confidential IP has been a big help. When you see a SharePoint site or a Drupal site you can usually tell "oh this is a MS SharePoint site", but with Sitecore the ability to customize and have different views even different components based on device type makes Sitecore a clear winner.

Of all the competitors listed above, Sitecore owned, by far, the best combination of power, easy-of-use, and extensibility. It easily outperformed the other paid-for CMS systems. Its power is especially noticeable in its ability to handle very complex workflows, security permissions, and server setups. Beyond that, it is very extensible, allowing you easily to piggy-back on its out of box power and further customize it to your needs. There are only a few reasons I would not recommend Sitecore over the other CMS systems: cost, if the client requires a non-.Net based system, their needs are not as great so that a slimmer system like WordPress would make more sense.

I have used an in-house CMS and the Amaxus CMS. Sitecore is a great balance of these two. The in-house CMS was VERY user friendly, for the least technical client. It showed the actual page you were editing and allowed you to basically edit the text on the page, no HTML necessary. However, it locked you in to a lot of the design and there was little flexibility to change things, like navigation items, or move things on the page. Amaxus had a LOT of flexibility and a lot of functions. However, the learning curve was incredibly difficult, and clients had to sit through multiple trainings even to understand the basics. Our developers also really struggled building in Amaxus. Sitecore is a perfect balance. It gives the user a lot of flexibility and functionality, but is also pretty easy to learn and use.

Every product has a cost window it fits in. Umbraco is perfect for small to mid-enterprise implementations. However Sitecore is more stable from a developement standpoint.

For us, Sitecore was all about the integration possibilities and a CMS that empowered our staff to get their information published online in a timely fashion. At the time SiteFinity was still early in its development. Sitecore was a more mature product with many more features.

Sitecore is an enterprise level web CMS It's very extensible, has a lot of developer/community support, and is very developer friendly. The structure of content is based on a tree of nodes with parent-children relationships. Sitecore is well known in the WCM community as a leader in content management.

A great CMS is expected these days, what Sitecore brings to the table is the additional components that a marketer needs for a single digital hub. Personalization, Email Campaigns, CRM Integration, AB Testing and Analytics. All of those features come in the core Sitecore platform and make it untouchable.

Sitecore CMS+DMS+ Ecommerce gives end to end ibusiness solutions, so essentially you're staying with the same company and all products work cohesively, while with other products you have to buy these components separately and also find talent to implement them. Sitecore out preformed the native Weblogic CMS, as we will as other we have deployed in the past (Fatwire, CommonSpot). Sitecore was able to deliver the features advertised, without holding any gotcha's typically plaguing the majority of other CMS in the market.

SharePoint was viewed as a blackhole of development, whereas Sitecore required little customization. This allowed us to correctly estimate the time and budget required to meet our needs, and successfully roll-out the solution to the business.
