What is Smartlook?

Smartlook is an analytics solution tool for websites, iOS/Android apps, and various app frameworks, that answers the "whys" behind users' actions. It helps users understand precisely how customers interact with website and app — watch recordings, create heatmaps, use automatic tracked events, and build conversion funnels. Data is seen on one central dashboard, which enables sharing and collaborating with colleagues. This is to support clear, data-driven decision-making for product managers, marketers, UX designers and developers, and help them improve each website and app by reducing churn rates, boosting conversions, identifying and fixing bugs, and improving UX.

Smartlook offers the ability to record users’ behavior in Unity games. The vendor states clients include Madfinger Games, MobilityWare, and Awesome Prototype.

Smartlook started in 2016 and currently boasts more than 2,800 paying organizations across the globe including companies like Paxful, Sky, Volvo, Vogue, Papa Johns, Miele, and Livestorm.

Smartlook is currently being used in 2 countries and their e-commerce departments. It is not accessible to everyone across the whole organization, but employees are free to request access. Based on job positions the current users are project managers and some developers, all part of the internal IT department.
  • Showing live recording of customers currently interacting with the website.
  • Stitching together recording from different sessions but from the same user.
  • Overall very user friendly UI.
  • Rage click tracking - it incorrectly assumes customers are rage clicking even though they are just checking different terms & conditions.
Smartlook does everything that any other page recording software does. We use it specifically to check the checkout funnel usability and potential errors that would otherwise be very difficult to replicate. We encourage people with access to Smartlook to watch the videos on a regular basis, so that they have an active connection to how the customers actually use the website. It is also a great tool to do kind of a low cost simple user testing, where, by just watching customers linger in some parts of the customer flow, we come up with UX improvements.

Smartlook helps us optimize our SL (sales latter) pages. You can get any heatmap, but with Smartlook you actually see (thanks to the recordings) what the users are doing and you can see the page from the prospect's perspective. This is the single most important feature to me. So to actually answer the question, it saves us money and time by making easier the whole process of tweaking the SL.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Recording of the user's journey.
  • Tracking.
  • UX / UI - it took me a while to get oriented and learn how to use the tool.
I only use it for one scenario, one purpose and that is optimization of sales pages and landing pages and for that I find it extremely well suited. I imagine it could be a very useful tool for developers of apps to see where users struggle or how they actually use the app.

Great App Analytics Tool

We looked to Smartlook when Google Analytics was falling short. I needed to create custom funnels and filters for web and apps and Smartlook was the best solution for my needs. The sales staff was wonderful and accommodating when I was trying out the platform and the customer support agents held my hand while I learned Smartlook in depth. They made it easy for my employees to learn and now our entire team is a Smartlook expert. Smartlook also makes it easy for the consumer with many plans and custom plans to fit every need.
  • Mobile app analytics.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Custom filters.
  • Behaviors.
  • They need a solution to follow app to website.
  • An easier way to send videos.
  • AI to help slog through all the videos.
Smartlook is great for teams that are looking for more than Google Analytics. Smartlook is great for user-centered design teams. Smartlook is great for orgs that have multiple apps. Smartlook is not great for people trying to track experiences from mobile app to web. I believe they are working on this feature but it isn't there yet.

We have been using Smartlook from the very beginning. It helps us to analyze the website by how customers are engaging with it and helps us to make better decisions in terms of marketing. They offer a lot of features which help us to analyze the website performance even the recording is so clear and they will tell us how and where the user is going and their behavior, and it helps us to make our product better.
  • Recording.
  • Funnel creation.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Sources combination.
  • GA 4 support.
  • Apps recording should be easy setup.
As a marketing agency, this can help us to determine the use of behavior, to use a flow, and it helps us to optimize the website for better conversion. We can take the conversion rate from 0.40 to 1.40 with the help of this tool.

We use Smartlook mainly at [the] marketing department for heatmaps and to check the behaviour of customers on our website and to see if they encounter any problems from the recordings. [The] best thing for us is that we can create a heatmap from the past so it's ready immediately and the recordings.
  • Heatmap.
  • Recording.
  • Instant heatmap creation.
  • Some kind of webinar to explain all features.
  • We use only what we need, but I guess there is more to explain.
For me, and if I know of friends, I have recommended them Smartlook. We originally started with only [a] trial version but eventually updated to the pro-paid version and haven't canceled the subscription. Since we do international business, it helps us when there are flags on recordings to easily see where the customer is from.

Every team member in our company uses Smartlook to understand and curate learning about the user's behaviour and how they understand whatever feature or experiment the team is rolling out. It helps us identify the use case scenarios of our power users and helps us make key decisions for our business.
  • We conduct a lot of experiments. Smartlook sessions act as the primary tool to conduct remote user testing.
  • We also measure app performance through Smartlook. Places where we see loading time greater than the threshold limit becomes insightful and a key indicator of problems that the team can pick up.
  • The heatmaps are a clear-cut representation of how and where functionality is discoverable and accessible.
  • The video resolutions is very poor. There is a good scope of improvement in that.
  • The filters section is tough to understand and implement. A normal person, like an intern, is not able to apply the right filters to view a session.
  • As a very active user myself, I am still [unable] to understand how and why I should use behaviour flows. Maybe you guys can work on better onboarding.
I would not recommend 10/10 because of the following reasons
  • Video quality.
  • Costing to value compared to other tools.

There are a lot of tools in the market that offer more analytics and data along with user sessions but having used the tool for one year, I feel more confident while using it. For early-stage startups, Smartlook is a very, very helpful tool to understand and generate knowledge about user behaviours. As a user, I don't find any scenario where Smartlook is inappropriate.

The best program to keep track of the users of your website. It has allowed us to make improvements based on the usage by users. In addition, the filters and, without a doubt, the conversion funnel are of great help to know the experience of the users and the difficulties they encounter when making a purchase.
  • User experience.
  • Conversions.
  • Recording.
Useful in all cases when you want to know how users use your website and make improvements.

It is used by the marketing and performance department to view and analyze user’s journey on our e-commerce platforms and build/analyze purchase funnels built with Smartlook. We also use it to compare data from Google Analytics for consistency. Another way we use it is to monitor and fix platform errors.
  • Session recordings.
  • Funnels.
  • Error reporting.
  • Funnel templates.
  • Auto-enabling IP filters for traffic denial.
Smartlook is well suited for monitoring website errors and user behavior at website launch and building and monitoring funnels while in production. I find Smartlook is less appropriate for using it as the only source of data.

Smartlook is extremely helpful by letting us know what clients are doing on specific pages of our application, not just how they move between them. This can help us ascertain how they are completing tasks, how long it takes them to understand the interface, and how long it takes them to find what they are looking for.
  • Session recording of the users' mouse actions.
  • Event logging of what the user clicked and where.
  • Heatmap generation to see the most frequently used areas of a page.
  • URL routing is great for single domains but struggles across applications with multiple subdomains or custom URL based routing.
Smartlook is well suited to help ascertain if a page can be easily used by clients, determine if the user experience is performing as intended, and where it can be improved.

I have been using Smartlook for my personal games. This helped me to see where the users were dropping in the first session, so after fixing it my game retention was increased.
  • It helped me where errors were coming.
  • It helped me optimize my game.
  • It helped me to understand in some devices my game was not working, but in other platforms I didn't see anything.
  • I think for what I need it was enough.
For me, it will always be helpful to record user sessions and understand user behaviour.

We use SmartLook to see how people are interacting on our website to make sure that the content and layout are user-friendly. If it's not then we can change it. If it is then we leave it. Without Smartlook we would not be able to do this.
  • Record.
  • Ability to narrow down search criteria.
  • User friendly.
  • Heat maps.
  • Being able to delete the recording when viewed.
We use it to monitor traffic to our website. We need to know what countries our users come from and what our users are looking at. We need to make sure everything is where it needs to be. With the recording function, we can achieve this with Smartlook.

Currently using this system to help make informed suggestions about UI improvements on clients' websites to drive sales and customer user experience on their websites.
  • Filtering analytics and results quickly.
  • Full session recordings.
  • Easy to access results quickly.
  • Would like ability to get more detailed reports in a digest form.
  • Would love to get quick access through a mobile app.
  • Insights and technical tips from Smartlook, based on user behaviour would be great!
Couldn't be happier with Smartlook and the ability to get such deep level analytics that influence how we improve overall user experience on our clients' websites, to help drive increased sales and keep users on their websites longer.

Smartlook is a very useful tool that we use in conjunction with Google Analytics. We are a non-profit organization that offers an online platform for users to "make money do good" and invest in various good causes ranging from community projects to renewable energy. How users engage with our platform is crucial, especially as we have recently relaunched the site. Smartlook enables me to see what content users interact with, what the drop-off points on registration or investment funnels are, and it even picks up error messages. That information is displayed as either heatmaps or session recordings. The whole company has used that information to modify our platform to enhance our conversion rates. It's a simple tool with great features and the share functionality enables me to easily pass along any findings I discover. The support I have received from Smartlook has also been first class too.
  • Filterable user session recordings.
  • Filterable user heatmaps.
  • Easy share functionality.
  • Easy funnel creation.
  • I've requested the ability to segment by acquisition source, if possible.
It's a fantastic tool for seeing how individual users interact with your platform. I would recommend using it with Google Analytics, rather than as a stand-alone system, because that's how I've found it to be invaluable. Whereas GA just shows the raw stats of which pages have been visited, Smartlook enables you to see what an individual does on each page and as a result, it gives you far more information on how those pages are used.

It is being used by our Tech Team as well as the operation team. The Tech Team uses it to troubleshoot any reported issue by looking at the user behavior and console that is offered by Smartlook. The operation team uses it to study feature usage and to make decisions on feature improvements and figure out which users need training to use the platform.
  • Captures the entire user's session as is!
  • Gives the url in seconds.
  • Provide developer console.
  • Network tab currently does not show any requests being made.
  • Allow downloading of the session video.
If you have a non-tech-savvy audience then this is a must-use tool. You will not have to ask users about the steps they took which lead to a problem. Instead, you will be able to just look at their session and know exactly what they did. Problem-solving becomes a breeze with this tool.

We use Smartlook to review our user's navigation journey. We use it to follow up by making suggestions that the user had clicked on. The clients think we are super intuitive by knowing what they like before they have told us.
  • Retaining History of IP addresses' website journey.
  • Allows us to block out IP addresses of the team.
  • The speed control is fantastic!
  • The CSS for my site doesn't load all of the time.
I think this is best for new site launches for about 60-90 days until the site has no user issues. I also wish we could somehow connect to Google Analytics to know what USER search words were.

I use Smartlook on our website to see how the page visitors behave when they read an article. We constantly update our web design and Smartlook has helped us identify the parts that need improvement when it comes to the overall user experience. For example, you might think that changing the color of a button might not be a big deal, but with Smartlook you can clearly see if a user taps it or just hovers over it cause they don't see it. It's quite a great tool!
  • It helps identify design and user experience pain points.
  • Helps design better products.
  • Maybe the dashboard could provide some more useful information at a glance.
It is perfect when you want to test a new idea, design, flow, whatever that might be. It makes it easy to identify all of the issues that might be caused later down the line as you can see what the user does, where they click, where they don't, etc.

We use Smartlook to improve our understanding of how especially new users interact with our website. It helps us to quickly gain an understanding of how our website is being used and to remove roadblocks and unnecessary friction. We can also quickly determine how changes are received by users and how it affects their behavior.
  • Effective filtering.
  • Nice interface.
  • Good video player with many options for skipping unnecessary parts.
  • The comment option could be better. It can be hard to find other people's comments and you have to turn on the feature to see them.
  • I have heard (and consequently not tried) that Smartlook does not work well on phones. Better support for limited viewport devices could be nice.
  • Initially the product seems a little bit daunting. A bit more hand holding in the beginning or a simple walk through could be nice. Perhaps I just missed it?
Finding out exactly how users interact with a product. For this, Smartlook is quite invaluable. Our website does employ several iFrames and it is not very suited to work with such. From a GDPR perspective, it is nice that Smartlook anonymizes user input. That does also sometimes make it a bit harder to follow what is happening, but altogether, it works quite well.

It's been used across the whole organization. The feature we use and enjoy the most is the heatmaps and recordings, which helps our Product Team track our users' behaviors and helpd us identify gaps and improve our product. We also like that Smartlook is always improving and adding new features; it's a way better product since we started using it.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Recordings.
  • Event tracking.
  • Funnels.
  • Dashboards could be better and more insightful.

We use Smartlook to monitor our web traffic on newly launched websites, mostly e-commerce, and to determine where customers are having trouble navigating, finding menu entries, and navigate to the correct products. We also use it for the experience in 'my account' and 'my orders' pages and pretty much everywhere where we need to assess whether the information layout and page flow are optimal. It has helped us implement several improvements in our navigation, mega-menus, login and log-out pages, etc.
  • Show recording of user activity on our website.
  • Filter and drill-down into specific interactions.
  • Add reporting for custom events and areas on the website.
  • Show only sessions that have had a particular type of interaction (e.g. shopping cart activity).
  • I would like some more control on filters.
  • I'd like better recording in some areas that is currently missing events.
  • I'd like more recordings included in the plan.
We are only using it for customer (public-facing) websites to see whether the customers are struggling to navigate or find specific products or navigation pathways. We also assess where customers LEAVE a specific product page and how we might be able to revamp or change the layout of that page to better serve the desired information. It has helped us see which information customers spend the most time reading on our websites and what they do before and after so that we can show that information more prominently.

Smartlook is used by me as the sole developer of our website and marketing campaigns. Since we are a startup company Smartlook is providing us invaluable insight as to how our users interact with our website, landing pages, and sales funnels. It has helped me identify website issues on specific screen sizes.
  • Smartlook has an awesome funnel visualization tool which is much easier to set up compared to Facebook and Google Analytics.
  • Smartlook incorporates great filtering functionality to group your recordings for east processing.
  • The free trial is loaded with functionality.
  • Privacy issues with other countries are unclear (especially in Europe).
  • Even though recordings are only kept for 30 days it would be useful if the old recording info is still available such as date and time.
  • The assistant pop-ups are useful sometimes and annoying sometimes. It would like to be able to enable/disable them.
Smartlook is well suited for any new website to understand how new users interact with the different aspects of the website. I guess it would not be appropriate to use Smartlook on specific websites where privacy issues would block or severely limit the recording of most of the user activities.

We use Smartlook to understand how users use our mobile apps. I believe it is a very useful tool to analyze the user journey, find problems, or issues that users are facing and improve the overall user experience. • Recording users' sessions.
  • Filter recording based on user segmentation or events.
  • Easy integration

Smartlook eliminated the guesswork and discovered real plus actionable reasons. As a user, I have felt that Smartlook has some unique features which give you a way to understand and learn user behavior at a very micro level. Smartlook has made me build conversion funnels just to witness conversion rates as well as uncover why people are actually churning.
  • All credit goes to Smartlook because due to it we get important data that helps us make our website more user-friendly for potential customers.
  • The fundraising strategy has become more efficient due to Smartlook.
  • It is [an] advanced and highly developed platform that is giving wonderful services. I really like the way it is giving professional services.
  • There are certain cons associated with Smartlook that need to be looked into so that the overall user experience goes even more smoothly. Firstly, I think that the storage capacity of the cache should be enhanced as currently, it does not exceed 200 MB.
  • There are small bugs that I and my team have figured out which are not critical and still need to be fixed. Moreover, the classic analytics tools are more sophisticated in the options they provide.
I would recommend Smartlook as it is appropriate for any new website to understand how the overall users interact with the different aspects of the website. Smartlook is great for instances when you have to segment and catalog the extremely fine information of the user as well as review their application behavior. It is an especially great tool for newcomers because it broadens their horizons quite a lot.

We use Smartlook unique features to collect, record and review how website visitors are exploring our site. Through the use of its qualitative analytics, we gain behavior insights that help our team in maximizing ROI and improving customer engagement. We get to know whatever glitches and bugs site visitors experience while interacting with our website.
  • Recording of visitor behavior and generating clear insights
  • Tracking the activities of return users
  • The ability to differentiate between random browsing and actions that are deliberate
  • The storage capacity of cache does not exceed 200 MB
The software will help users gain a clear understanding of the online behavior of their customers as they interact with their website and it takes less time to activate once it's setup. With Smartlook users automatically track every site visitor engagement and view real video recordings of sessions and still be able discover where visitors aren't clicking.
