Convenient Integration: Many users have found IPAM's integration with the SolarWinds suite to be convenient for tracking multiple sites and subnets. This feature has been praised by several reviewers as it allows them to easily manage their IP address allocation and DNS updates in one centralized solution.
Efficient IP Management: The ability of IPAM to manage IP addresses and update DNS as soon as a device is discovered has been highly valued by users. This functionality has proven useful for managing IP address availability and ensuring accurate DNS updates, according to numerous reviewers.
Effective Capacity Planning: Users appreciate IPAM's ability to reserve and comment on IP addresses for effective IP address allocation and capacity planning. Several reviewers have noted that this feature helps them allocate IPs efficiently, avoid conflicts, and plan for future network expansion.
Slow, Clunky Web Interface: Many users have expressed frustration with the slow, clunky web interface of SolarWinds IP Address Manager. Users find it difficult to navigate and perform tasks efficiently, impacting their overall experience with the software.
Difficult Initial Setup: Several reviewers have reported that the initial setup of the software is not user-friendly and requires a learning curve. This can be challenging for new users who are unfamiliar with the Orion platform.
Limited Options for Organizing Devices: Users have complained about the limited options for organizing devices in SolarWinds IP Address Manager. They feel that there is a lack of flexibility in the licensing tiers and find it difficult to effectively organize their devices as per their requirements.
Users commonly recommend the following regarding the software for managing IP addresses:
-
Trying the free option before purchasing: Many users suggest taking advantage of the free version of the software to get a feel for its functionality and suitability for their needs. This allows users to assess whether it meets their requirements before committing to a paid version.
-
Considering other options like InfoBlox and Mice & Men: Some users suggest exploring alternative software options such as InfoBlox or Mice & Men. These alternatives may offer different features or better meet specific requirements, so users recommend comparing different solutions to find the best fit.

(51-75 of 90)SolarWinds IPAM Review
- Quick and easy reference
- Database of IPs Addresses
- DHCP scope
- IP conflict prevention
- Really nothing at this time
- IP tracking
- DHCP scope check and alerts
- IP conflict prevention
- Generating quick reports for subnet usage
- It could pull data from the other modules to prevent entering data at multiple places.
- Allow for public IP redundancy.
IPAM great value, easy to deploy and use
- Shares info easily across departments in user-friendly UI.
- Auto discovers and updates IP info through regular scans.
- Provides history for DHCP addresses (useful for forensics).
- Good single pane of glass UI integration with other SolarWinds products.
- Only have 3 tiers of licensing small/medium/unlimited - we are just north of medium so had to buy unlimited.
- Sometimes overwrites manually entered data even though told not to.
A real time snmp/wmi compliant scan can reveal a lot of detail about the connected IP vs just used or free.
My experience long ago with spreadsheets was unless you had a single keeper the data was never accurate.
SolarWinds IP Address Manager - the best tool there is for keeping your network organized!
- Organizing networks, subnets, and addresses logically using intuitive folders and hierarchical structure.
- Tracking and displaying statistics for subnet allocation usage, available space, and exceeded capacity.
- Providing details necessary for future network expansion.
- Making it easy to associate an occupied address with the assigned device in npm.
- The interface is DHCP-heavy, so if you don't use that feature it can be annoying.
- The interface assumes that full = bad, so if you have well-utilized subnets with lots of assigned devices, you'll also have lots of warning icons, which can be annoying.
- If your network is SNMP-heavy, having to manage SNMP credentials in both npm and IPAM can be irritating.
SolarWinds IPAM - easy-to-use IP address management!
- Manages IP address ranges.
- Shows free IP addresses.
- Shows devices not in DNS.
- Could do with better automation and mapping. We are using an older version, though.
- Needs a bit of experience to use.
- Reporting could be better.
Best value for the money
- DHCP integration
- Automatic device discovery
- Granular role-based administration
- L2 discovery using local agents
- Reporting
- Public IP Address space management
Finally, if you need detailed reporting or if you need to implement an IP address request workflow you may evaluate alternate solutions.
- Charts show status of subnets at-a-glance.
- Top 10 lists identify which subnets and scopes are low on free space from DHCP.
- You can search by vendor, mac, ip address and a lot of more options.
- You can create reports and export them to csv.
- If your network is too big, IPAM takes a long time to rescan all the devices.
- You need to install IPAM in a killer server to at least do not decrease the performance of other Solarwinds products running in the same server.
Using for Basic IPAM, it meets my needs.
- It easily maintains my IP addresses.
- Export of IP information to a CSV.
- Scanning of subnets to look for stale/transient assigned IP addresses.
- It meets my needs.
SolarWinds IPAM
- Automatically updates subnet usage.
- Integration with DNS.
- Integration with other products could be simpler but isn't bad.
- It will scan network and find used IPs and put them in transient status if it was used and now is not reachable
- Allows you to manually create ranges and scan network for IP ranges
- Able to setup descriptions on IP addresses if they are used
- I cannot think of a way to make this better off the top of my head.
SolarWinds IP Address Manager Review
- IP Address Tracker will allow you to scan multiple subnets
- Display if those addresses are used, available, or reserved
- Also, the fact you can export to Excel for spreadsheets and such awesome features are a plus
- Very simple and easy to use
- The web console needs a little work
- Uses too many resources for database
- Some compatibility issues with SQL Server
- Not user-friendly unless you work on it or if that was your only job.
SolarWinds IPAM: You need it
- Keeps track of IPs using scheduled scans.
- I can run reports to tell me what my subnet usage is and provide the data to back it up.
- It's web-based. I don't need a thick client and no Java/Flash needed.
- Nothing to see here. We are happy with the product.
- Great community support, not really a bad thing.
- Up-to-date list of available and used IPs.
- Easy to access, read, and manage.
- Highlight the other features of the application.
SolarWinds IP Address Manager Review
- Shows availability status of an address.
- Pulls reverse DNS information.
- Pull a list of forward DNS info.
- Allow manually written metadata to keep rather than get overwritten during scans.
- Group by custom property.
- I like its discovery process for identifying IP addresses.
- The interface is fairly straightforward.
- It isn't always clear how the software tracks devices over time. For example the difference between something that is gone vs. not currently online.
- Database of IPs
- Up/down status
- Visualization
- Website theming
After IPAM, hard to go back to spreadsheets
- It gives us a good reference of what we have available.
- It allows us to reuse and use any unused IP, visualization
- Allows some other teams to see the different IP ranges based on different subnets.
- The edit part is tricky because it lets you select several, but only edit one .
- A big subnet does not show on the right pane.
- The scrolling on the bottom part of the IP address view would be nice if you could select the range.
Must have tool for your data center
- Easy to use
- Centralize management of your IP inventory
- IP Address Inventory
- Moving existing group is a little bit of a challenge.
SolarWinds IPAM a huge let down
- The GUI is to the usual Solarwinds standard
- Licensing
- Lack of Operational Intuition
- Lack of effective and efficient support
- Device polling
- Device information - MAC address, hostname, and manufacturer
- Pie Chart - Gives you an easy way to tell how many IPs you have used.
- The larger the database, the slower it responds.
- The polling engine will freeze from time to time.
- Export to CSV
- Ease of use
- Integration with SolarWinds Orion platform.
- Tighter integration with NPM would be beneficial.
I Like SolarWinds
- IT does keep track of IP addresses.
- It can tell us if they are in use.
- We are able to see utilization of subnets at a glance.
- Better detection of an IP address in use.
- Requires manual intervention.
- Automated updates of addresses in use would be great.
- The Solarwinds IPAM supports creating custom fields, which simplifies automation scripting.
- The Solarwinds IPAM supports bulk importing from a variety of flat file formats, which is great for initial seeding, if the API is not being used.
- The API is straightforward, and can be leveraged by novice scripting programmers.
- It needs to support searching on custom fields.
- Moving objects around between folders should be more free-form, currently there are esoteric restrictions.
- Multi-select for network objects should be supported - IE for drop/drag into folders.
Makes managing IP addresses easier
- Presenting a visual representation of how the IP address space is carved up
- Providing a quick way for engineers to self-allocate new IP addresses (thanks to the access model which lets us give them just the permissions they need)
- Having an API, so that automated server build tools can allocate their own IP addresses from a range
- The only real problem we have is where people haven't manually entered enough information into the tool.
I'm not married to it.
- Subnet identification and management
- IP management, organization, and conflict prevention
- Lack of support for Azure virtual networks
- Needs full integration with other Solarwinds\Orion modules
