Convenient Integration: Many users have found IPAM's integration with the SolarWinds suite to be convenient for tracking multiple sites and subnets. This feature has been praised by several reviewers as it allows them to easily manage their IP address allocation and DNS updates in one centralized solution.

Efficient IP Management: The ability of IPAM to manage IP addresses and update DNS as soon as a device is discovered has been highly valued by users. This functionality has proven useful for managing IP address availability and ensuring accurate DNS updates, according to numerous reviewers.

Effective Capacity Planning: Users appreciate IPAM's ability to reserve and comment on IP addresses for effective IP address allocation and capacity planning. Several reviewers have noted that this feature helps them allocate IPs efficiently, avoid conflicts, and plan for future network expansion.

Slow, Clunky Web Interface: Many users have expressed frustration with the slow, clunky web interface of SolarWinds IP Address Manager. Users find it difficult to navigate and perform tasks efficiently, impacting their overall experience with the software.

Difficult Initial Setup: Several reviewers have reported that the initial setup of the software is not user-friendly and requires a learning curve. This can be challenging for new users who are unfamiliar with the Orion platform.

Limited Options for Organizing Devices: Users have complained about the limited options for organizing devices in SolarWinds IP Address Manager. They feel that there is a lack of flexibility in the licensing tiers and find it difficult to effectively organize their devices as per their requirements.

Users commonly recommend the following regarding the software for managing IP addresses:

  1. Trying the free option before purchasing: Many users suggest taking advantage of the free version of the software to get a feel for its functionality and suitability for their needs. This allows users to assess whether it meets their requirements before committing to a paid version.

  2. Considering other options like InfoBlox and Mice & Men: Some users suggest exploring alternative software options such as InfoBlox or Mice & Men. These alternatives may offer different features or better meet specific requirements, so users recommend comparing different solutions to find the best fit.

  3. Looking for bundle purchase with other products for a better deal: Reviewers mention that while the software itself can be pricey, they recommend exploring bundle purchases that include additional products or services. By bundling multiple products together, users may be able to secure a better deal or more cost-effective licensing options.

It is important to note that users also mention areas for improvement, such as inadequate support and resource-intensive nature of the software. However, these are not counted as among the three most common recommendations.

It currently is being used by ITS Department but looking to use globally in future. We use it to track IP addresses, assignments, and help prevent duplication issues.
  • They track any range of subnets that you may need.
  • Helps prevent duplication by keeping track of what is used and available.
  • There is an option where a user can request an IP address from the administrator, this also helps keep track of our IP ranges.
  • I do not have any items at this time.
This is a great tool to manage subnets, especially with a combination of using DHCP and static IPs from same subnets.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager was implemented few years ago as we needed a good solution to manage our subnets and IP adresses, as our network is spreaded between many subsidiaries accros North America. It starts as a network tool but now it's used by all IT depts as it's very easy to use and we added all our knowdledge inside. Our automated server deployment system is also using IPAM for choosing right subnet and mange IP adresses lifecycle.
  • Very flexible organization in folders/sites
  • Good integration with Microsoft DNS/DHCP
  • ICMP scans and ARP tables imports
  • Easy setup
  • DNS/DHCP integration a little complicated and not bi-directional
  • IP request form not customizable
  • Some scan issues
SolarWinds IP Address Manager is a must for mid to large-sized businesses, with any network configurations. If you have multiple teams involved in IP management/assignment you cannot avoid it, especially if you want to automate IP management. SolarWinds IP Address Manager is not designed only for network teams so every IT people can use it. If you want to allow end-users asking IPs so you'll need to use SolarWinds APIs and make your own form/system.

Used for managing all IPs in the US offices, but only the IT department manages it at this time.
It obviously helps us to keep track of IPs that have been assigned officially, and marginally helps us track down IPs that have been used without our sign off.
  • Breakout of IP Subnets to manageable folders/sites.
  • Tracking of IPs throughout the entire organization, common location for all source of truth.
  • Clear way of turning on/off the system auto change of status.
  • How users can request IPs, as the managers of the IP source of truth and assigners, we need to be able to customize the aspects of what the users can get. We want the users to tell us how many IPs they need, what the purpose is, and (if they are in the know) which subnet they need the IPs. Then WE get emails with the request and WE are the ones that assign the IPs, not the system, because today, the system will just GIVE the user the next contiguous X amount of IPs, and that doesn't always work for US.
  • Reporting/Alerting? When we are IN the IPAM we can see indicators that a specific subnet might be getting full by an indicator, but why don't we have something on the dashboard, or an email alert automatically at a certain % full? Or do we and we just haven't hit that mark yet?
  • More customization of the display in IPAM, the default view when looking at the subnets as either too much info, or maybe the pertinent info is off the screen and we have to scroll to see what we want, can we make a custom view here that is for everyone by default?
If you just want to keep track of IPs, it is great. If you want to let end users request their own IPs, it CAN work, but it has limits.

This is a very good tool that I used to manage all my company subnets and IPs. It is a one-stop-shop for all IP management solutions.
  • I can see any device IP at a glance.
  • I can see what IPs are static and what IPs non static.
  • I can get alerts for any IP-related issues.
  • Sys log filtering update
Managing cross-region devices in real-time has been a very good advantage for my company.

In the Technology building we give access to all techs to access IPAM. This allows easy access to verify if an IP address is currently used, what machine is using it, and if there are any free IPs in a given subnet. This is an amazing tool when looking for a static IP to give a new Printer and such.
  • Search for a given IP address
  • Look in a subnet of IPs
  • Find free addresses in a range
  • An easy way to update the range, in case there were recent additions
  • Better polling of device names
  • Easy way to ping an address
Great to do quick lookups in a range or subnet. Holds old names so if a system is powered off, you can still see it. On the same note, sometimes it take a while for a device to fall off the list. Would like IPAM to match with DHCP to refresh scopes and clear out old systems that have been powered off or removed.

We use it to monitor what is in each of our IP scopes. It is helpful in finding devices and equipment that is in the wrong scope so that it can be changed. It also provides assistance in knowing what devices may not be connected or responding, We use it to identify what scopes are full or getting close to full.
  • Scope scans.
  • DNS lookup.
  • Missing and/or badly configured devices.
  • Multiple scans at the same time.
  • More export options.
If you are looking for a tool that does identification for devices and VLAN management, this is the tool. We use it in many ways and it has always been extremely helpful. If you are looking for a deep analysis this is not the best tool for you but it meets our needs.

We use it in our IT department. It's mostly used by a small network management team as well as IT support staff who are responsible for end-user issues at field offices. We are a big SolarWinds shop and have invested heavily in the various SolarWinds monitoring modules (NPM, NTA, NCM, SAM, LEM, etc.). Compared to the big modules, this one is relatively small and of only limited use.
  • Gives you a graphical dashboard of all your IP ranges, where they are, and what they are doing.
  • Highlights ranges that are close to maximum usage and might need to be expanded.
  • It gives you some ability to control and configure IPs from the console if it has DNS access (ours doesn't).
  • I can't think of anything missing functionality. IP space management isn't a particularly complicated part of network management.
  • You could argue that IPAM doesn't need to be its own module. Perhaps it should be combined with Network Configuration Manager?
  • We don't use IPAM a ton, so I don't have opinions on the ease of use.
IPAM is probably best suited to organizations that suffer from these problems:
  • Many disjointed networks with possible IP address conflicts
  • No centralized oversight of all LANs
  • Organizations that need a way to manage DNS centrally
For others, it's more of just a monitoring tool/dashboard for IP usage. It's good at what it does but is more of a nice-to-have tool than a must-have tool.

Being an international organization with multiple subnets across the globe, keeping track of our IP addresses, in particular, had started becoming very challenging. IPs would have been taken up without our knowledge or duplicated, causing issues in the network. We were keeping track with spreadsheets covering multiple subnets across multiple sites. IPAM brings a long needed level of automation and control to all of those subnets and we've now regained control as a result.
  • Automation of subnets and discovery.
  • Alerting of troublesome IP addresses.
  • Request-based system for an IP address allocation.
  • DHCP and DNS support.
  • We struggled with permissions when deploying and getting the right level of accounts to talk to our domain controllers.
  • The IP request templates could use some work and adjustments in terms of the way they're handled.
If you have multiple subnets and feel like you're losing control of said subnets in terms of IP allocation, then IPAM is a perfect fix. It also integrates nicely into the core Orion platform if you have purchased NPM.

Not in just a single role but in a few that blend integrated DHCP, DNS, and IP address management all in one. It's such a core tool that all teams have read access, even the helpdesk which answers and reduces simple but repetitive questions.
  • IP Address management which is the core yet it does it very well.
  • Integrated DHCP scanning.
  • DNS monitoring and scanning hence reading and writing to AD integrated DNS.
  • So many details and choices that it's hard to come up with an idea to improve it.
The bigger and more diverse the environment the more IPAM will show it's abilities and how useful it truly it is as a tool. The only scenario where I can see that it may not be needed is if the environment is made up of only one VLAN and just one person/team taking care of all IP needs.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM) is used throughout our company as the sole IP address management solution across all our departments. Many of our non-IT staff use it without any issues. Long gone are the days of having massive spreadsheets manually updated on shared network drives to manage IP subnet allocations.
  • Fluid subnet scanning and alerting.
  • Centralized DHCP and static IP address tracking.
  • Great integration with other SolarWinds Orion products.
  • The initial learning curve to administer it.
  • The interface can be clunky at times.
  • Without integration with other SolarWinds Orion products, you won't get the most out of IPAM.
IPAM is great as an Enterprise IP address management suite and allows a company to have a well-integrated product that staff both inside and outside of IT can use. IPAM integrates well into other SolarWinds Orion products allowing you to cross-reference data in powerful ways like tracking what port on a switch a host using a certain IP is connected to with User Device Tracker (UDT).

SolarWinds IPAM is used in our IT department for managing VLANs, Subnets, IP addresses assignment, Network traffic monitoring, switch interface monitoring, configuration changes implementations, Network mapping, events report, syslog, etc.
  • Subnet creation
  • IP assignment
  • Network monitoring
  • DNS management
  • Config Change Templates
  • Message Center

The SolarWinds product would be well suited for Vlans, Subnets, and IP addresses management, as well Network summarization.

The DHCP and DNS management, and the Configuration management aspects could be improved.

SolarWinds IPAM is being used across our entire organization to help keep track of all our IP addresses.

We use it to manage all our VLANs so that each department has an idea of which IP addresses are in use and which they can use. Very helpful at capturing all the IP address throughout multiple departments.

  • IP Address Management
  • Easy to use
  • Very easy to lookup devices based on IP Address
  • Gives device information of the device that is connected
  • Devices need a default gateway to get captured
  • Have to manually enter some device information

Very good at managing network IP Addresses across an organization. Really helpful when having separate network segments.

We use it to manage all our different VLANs. It is very helpful in finding out which IP Addresses we can use for our SAN environment.

It is also very insightful in tracking all the IP addresses so that we can tell how many IP addresses are used in a specific subnet.

IPAM is being used by my company to allocate and map IP addresses, both public and private, between 10 different network segments. It allows us to easily find next available and to routinely audit our IP space usage to project future needs and to justify IP usage to our carriers when we expand.
  • Adding New IP Ranges
  • Scanning Ranges to verify IP Usage
  • Updating and reserving IPs for documentation and reporting.
  • Better Integration with full Solarwinds suite
  • Alerting
IPAM is well suited for environments that need to document multiple IP spaces, both public and private. If might not be worth the cost if your network consists of a single /24 with a limited public space, but for more complex networks, it helps to keep all documentation in a central place.

We are currently using IPAM so monitor and organize all of our IP addresses. This addresses the issue of IP address organization and VLAN management. It allowed us to delete all of our IP spreadsheets as well as simplify the DNS and DHCP management in our organization. We also use IPAM to ensure we have adequate space for the future.
  • Automated IP address management. We don't have to do a single thing. IPAM automatically records the status of new and existing IP addresses in our organization.
  • DHCP/DNS Management. You can find an open IP and use it all through SW.
  • Records the History of IP addresses so you can see how they have been used.
  • I think the ability to log IP addresses does not need to be addresses because it seems like a complete package.
  • Integration between windows and Cisco devices for DHCP could be a little better.
  • IPAM used to have some issues pulling information from our Cisco supervisor but once we upgraded to a newer version it added support for that style switch.
Solarwinds IPAM is really good at logging all your IP addresses and is most suited for medium-large businesses but small businesses would definitely see a benefit as well. The reason I say this is because managing IP addresses take a lot of effort and with IPAM the process is completely automatic.

We use IPAM both internally and to monitor IP usage for several of our customers. We provide industrial IT solutions to municipalities and other large industries. One of the frequent problems we run into is undocumented devices. IPAM allow us to scan the environment and locate any connected device that has an IP address associated with it. Because IPAM also records the last response, we can also look for devices that may have been removed or gone down since they were scanned.

IPAM also makes it easy to organize subnets via folders and subfolders that contain named ranges. Because we are often dealing with customers that have multiple sites with multiple IP ranges, IPAM has been a good tool to simplify management of these subnets. IPAM also integrates with the rest of the Solarwinds suite, meaning that clicking on an address in IPAM will link to any monitored details.
  • Because of the integration with the Solarwinds suite, IPAM not only scans for devices, but links to any monitored details for that device. This is particularly nice when you have multiple sites and subnets that you are tracking
  • IPAM allows you to populate DNS. Since many of the devices we work with are non-standard non-windows devices, it allows us to update DNS as soon as a device is discovered and identified
  • Provides a great way to manage IP addresses, since IP addresses can be reserved and commented on. We use IPAM as our definitive source for finding available static IP addresses.
  • IPAM alerting is limited. Ideally, I'd like to be able to set up notifications for events such as a reserved IP address becoming active.
IPAM is a good fit for environments with multiple sites and multiple subnets. It is also a useful tool when determining available static IP addresses. At my last company, we replaced cumbersome subnet spreadsheets with IPAM, and suddenly we actually knew if the address was really available. It may not be as sophisticated as the other SolarWinds tools, but it just as useful.
