SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is mainly used to monitor core router interfaces, especially facing DIA connections. It is also configured to trigger email and text alerts when a bandwidth threshold is reached. Once a bandwidth abnormality is reported, SolarWind NPM is used to drill into traffic and find which endpoints are using a high amount of bandwidth.
  • Sort bandwidth usage from endpoint IP address or Interface.
  • See type of traffic passing important interfaces. Using SolarWinds NPM we were able to identify a unusual IPSEC issue which was affecting our entire network - and resolve it.
  • Drill down to exact time periods to see throughput.
  • I would like to see BGP related information in SolarWinds NPM.
I would recommend SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor for any situation, except for small networks where it is not worth the cost.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is used in our department and allows us to have full visibility of our networks at various locations.
  • Granularity of monitoring network equipment.
  • Intuitive interface.
  • Easy to use.
  • Licensing model is steep.
  • Different feautres are broken into modules.
  • Server requirements are kind of high.
SolarWinds has something for everyone but given it's module and license structure it's more suited for larger businesses.

SolarWinds NPM is used in our organization by the network unit in the IT department, mainly to monitor the infrastructure which contains routers, switches, a wireless controller, a load balancer and link controllers. A weekly, monthly and early report is generated which shows the usage of each and every device.
  • Tracking of online andoffline devices
  • Multi vendor support
  • i wish that it could allow to capture live usage of bandwidth per device (currently it supports 30 second interval for data capture)
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is well suited for multi vendor devices in an infrastructure.

We monitor all of our Cisco network equipment across Canada using Netflow integrated with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor reports and real-time bandwidth monitoring. We are able to get a good picture of what staff and students are doing on the networks. Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor and NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) allows us to observe diagnose and solve issues by seeing types of network traffic. Streaming video feeds, youtube, Netflix etc... and social media applications can impact performance. Using SolarWinds allows me to target specific devices and give this information to an onsite contact across Canada. They can then tell the end users to stop and also be sure the end users are within acceptable use policies for the company.
  • Real-time bandwidth monitoring. Provides me an accurate picture so we can review and compare with ISP providers to help improve performance and or make recommendations for upgrades to sites. We have paying students that demand a decent connection regardless of the fact they may not be using the network for academic related surfing.
  • Identify types of network traffic. Pinpoint repeat and consistent offending endpoints. Helping to create tighter ACLs and firewall rules to block unwanted sites.
  • Notification of nodes down. This allows us as the network team to get a head start on solving ISP related issues. We have redundant connections involving 2 or more ISP's this allows us to easily detwrmine which ISP is down.
  • Report generation. Creation of specific detailed reports is long winded and complex. It is not just drag and drop of elements you wish to monitor. Adding the ease for importing shared report templates from other users globally would be a huge improvement.
  • Topographical network mapping of individual sites is too complicated. Make it so I can add to a blank template to one or more nodes then the interfaces of each node. At the end of the day there are other products for network mapping paid and unpaid that are doing a better job.
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is well suited for bandwidth monitoring and traffic flow.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is used across the organization to monitor the network and server infrastructure. We are a 7x24 processing shop and uptime is critical. The monitoring and statistics are critical to maintaining high service levels to our operations. VMS operates in a multi-datacenter environment with development, testing, production, and recovery environments. SolarWinds allows our staff to stay ahead of capacity and scalability for the entire infrastructure. Real time alerts and status reports are key components that allow fast response to issues, and help plan changes, improvements, and upgrades.
  • Immediate notification alerts when connectivity or usage thresholds are exceeded. The reliability and consistency of the process is key to providing support.
  • Detailed information provided in a variety of formats. Allows various groups to review data in formats that work best for them and are clear and easy to use.
  • The ability to create groups that reflect our infrastructure. Allow support personnel to get an immediate view of status of a particular set of network and/or server equipment.
  • Alert management capability. Great ability to manage alerts during maintenance periods.
  • Continue to enhance the UI ease of use. The format and ease of finding information is good but continuous improvements are useful.
For our environment SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is well suited to a multi-site environment. It is a product that is very good at keeping our systems personnel updated when segments are slow or unavailable.

A large matrix of screens cover the wall of my office with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor statistics, graphs, charts, data, etc., all in real time. This way I can watch my network and know at a glance what the condition is.
  • Alerts me when traffic spikes.
  • Helps me determine the nature of traffic.
  • Alerts me when network is not healthy.
  • Single pane of glass would be nice.
  • Seems hard to navigate for beginners.
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is well-suited for any corporate environment where bandwidth and productivity are a concern.

We use Solarwinds NPM nee Orion to monitor our corporate network, all network switches, routers, and critical servers. We use it primarily as a diagnostic tool, but also for capacity planning.
  • Exploring network traffic over time with detailed graphs showing bandwidth, packet loss, latency.
  • Heads up display of top 10 potential issues in terms of current response time, packet loss, CPU load, memory used, disk space used, interface percent utilization, interface traffic, errors and discards.
  • Quickly checking firmware versions, up-time, ports in use and other general information regarding network devices.
  • I'd prefer a virtual appliance delivery model and one that was not dependent on Microsoft Windows and SQL Server technologies.
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is especially good in multi-vendor environments.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is being used by the IT department to monitor the backbone and ports of critical servers for activity and availability. It is very easy to see at a glance if there are any issues, and the live alerts keep an eye on things, so I can focus on other things.
  • At a glance on the NPM Summary tab I can see a list of all the ports that are monitored and what there status is.
  • I can see the Active Alerts and how long they have been active.
  • Interfaces with High Percent Utilization is easily viewable. This is good to know if you are troubleshooting a broadcast storm, or other network issues.
  • I have not been using SolarWinds NPM long enough to find any weaknesses.
SolarWinds NPM is a huge help in the small to mid sized business where staff is usually not what it should be to do a good job of keeping tabs on everything. It frees up the "mental cycles" to focus on other issues more pressing than, "are my interfaces up for all my servers?".

We use SolarWinds to monitor key points on our network. My department is the only one that uses it, but we are monitoring the entire network. SolarWinds helps us identify potential issues on the network, be it unusual traffic on a specific switch or even an individual port on a switch that has an issue. We are using it as a dashboard to be able to identify the performance at key point on the network.
  • SolarWinds lets you tailor what you see, but lets you delve further if necessary.
  • Solarwinds allows you to tailor itself to your needs for monitoring.
  • It communicates with network devices using industry standard protocols.
  • Because it can do so much, Solarwinds can be intimidating to get started with. Offering more "canned" viewing screens would be helpful.
The user needs to be fairly technical to set SolarWinds up. A novice would not be able to install and configure it. That said, once you have it setup, it does a great job providing you feedback on the health of your network and alerting you when an issue arises.

We use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor our network and also to monitor our customers' networks. We have NOC views for each particular customer - each one with especial requests or features.
  • Easy to deploy customized views with a very good look and feel.
  • Easy to install and to expand.
  • The limitation on group usage. If we get more than 3000 groups the web experience is terrible.
  • There are still a great number of additional applications to some tasks not available on the GUI.
  • NPM should monitor its own infrastructure.
  • Licensing! I have more than 2 dozen servers with 17 pollers. Its a mess have to licence one by one.
It works very good as a NOC front end.

Before SolarWinds we wouldn't know about our network unless someone called us about a problem. And we would manually log in to network devices one by one and check for any issues writing the same commands again and again. Thanks to SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and other SolarWinds software we can see our whole network at glance and run commands simultaneously on selected devices easily. As the system and network admin of a large scale government university with so many things to do and few personnel, SolarWinds is a lifesaver to me.
  • It is easy to implement. Two years ago as a novice sys admin I could set up and start using the software for my whole network so quickly. It was as easy as setting up a social media account. Next, next, done.
  • It works. There are lots of people selling lots of software. But at the end of the day so little of them do the job they claim to do. And SolarWinds is one piece of software that really does its job well.
  • Good performance. Installed in a VM with decent cpu, ram etc. And it will do its best with the resources at hand.
  • Instant support. We purchased the software through retailers yet get the support directly from SolarWinds. It is fast and there are people that really know what they are doing.
  • There is something called Network Atlas where we manually download and run it in a different environment. Yet the piece of software is the best thing about SolarWinds NPM. It would be great if it is directly implemented into the software with some ready to use quick templates like VLAN based grouping.
  • I think net-flow is a must have for any complete network monitor product but it is an independent piece of software which doesn't really have too many specialties itself. Implementing software like net-flow, engineering toolset etc., directly under SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor would be more convenient.
  • Configuring SNMP on devices can sometimes be a pain. If I could give SolarWinds the credentials, ip etc. and let the software do an auto configuration for me, it would be really helpful.
Monitoring detailed status of network devices at a glance is great. But further researching for the main source of possible errors like which specific nodes are causing a bandwidth overload etc., should be done on-site.

We use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor our network resources in real-time. Any issues are alarmed to the associated IT staff for correction. Many times, IT is onsite and working to correct the issue before end users are aware of any issue. Gives IT the 'proactive' look most say they desire.
  • Quick straight-forward interface.
  • Email alerts are helpful when out of office.
  • Mapping feature is unique and a useful diagram for larger sites.
  • The enclosed DB engine seems to have more problems than others. Should have connected to our in-house Oracle DB.
  • Not really an issue - but would LOVE an agent that ran in the Windows Notification Area for alerts.

We use Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor in our IT Department to monitor the health and state of our mission critical network in a 911 dispatch center. We have configured alerts to send an e-mail to myself and/or additional technicians in the event performance falters, when a mission critical server fails, or when a critical piece of network equipment quits working as configured. By using Solarwinds NPM I can usually know about a problem before anyone else even notices it.
  • The Virtualization Tab provides great insight into my VMWare and my Microsoft Hyper-V environments. All the important information for both environments is consolidated in a single pane.
  • Event Manager is easy and quick to configure especially when compared to other network monitoring systems out there. I was up and alerting in no time with SolarWinds.
  • The Thwack user community is another great feature with SolarWinds. If I ever run into an issue, with monitoring or configuration, the first place I look is Thwack. Using this method often saves me loads of time in determining what my issue is and how to correct it.
  • I wish there was a way to create a printable network map from Solarwinds, show me what is connected where.
  • Features on the administration page can sometimes be obscured or hard to find.

SolarWind Network Performance Monitor is particularly well suited for small to medium sized organizations. The price point is palatable given the number of features included. I have tried to use some of the "free" products out there and to me, none compare. Ease of use is very good which means in a small to medium sized organization you don't have to spend a lot of time learning or going to classes to learn how to use it.

I have never used this product in a large environment (more than 1000 nodes) but given what I see I would expect that it would scale well.

SolarWinds is being used to monitor and alert the Network Engineer of network for outages and use of the the network by the 18 consortium members. We are able to respond quickly to any issues on the network with the alerts that are set. It also provides information regarding our clients' use of the broadband.
  • SolarWinds does an excellent job of warning the Network Engineer of outages or anomalies that pop up.
  • SolarWinds provides reports to show statistics we use for billing and maintaining service.
  • SolarWinds offers a variety of alert options for different areas we monitor on the network.

Solarwinds NPM has been a great asset and tool for us keeping tracking of our network and resource performance. We use it to monitor all network components as well as several server and various other network connected systems.
  • Long term trends and graphing of performance and stats
  • At times setting up the systems initially it almost provided too many options making it overwhelming.
  • The alerting system used to be very cumbersome to figure out how to create custom alerts and triggers. This has begun to improve with web based access to this part of the system
Solarwinds NPM does it what it promises very well. My only negative for the product is the licensing; the cost and licensing models are not friendly to smaller IT budgets.

We use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor within our department to monitor our core, distribution, and access layers, as well as a few servers. Overall it keeps us on top of issues that occur due to various network outages by alerting the on-call personnel to an issue that can be assessed right away.
  • Monitors network equipment by using common SNMP MIBs.
  • Monitors detailed information, including routing table changes, and custom SNMP MIB's with very little work.
  • Rapid alerting system that has a variety of forwarding options.
  • Network mapping tool is great, but could use additional improvements in automatically detecting L2/L3 topology.
  • Grouping items, by group or by dependency is helpful, but groups/dependencies do not have the ability to interoperate.
  • Alert capabilities are pretty good overall, but wish it had more granularity for escalations.
It is extremely well suited to general SNMP capabilities, although for detailed server, net-flow, IPAM monitoring there are separate modules that must be purchased. The pricing model is very well structured and renewal cost is reasonable.

After researching many network monitoring tools, I decided to go with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor for our network. The SolarWinds NPM was really easy to set up and I was generating reports almost immediately. The real time band width graphs allow me to monitor the WAN connection to each site and the nodes at those sites. This makes it really easy to spot band width spikes during off peak times and trouble shoot any issues.
  • Top 5 end points tells you where your traffic is going.
  • Real time band width monitors.
  • Covers my entire network.
  • An easier way to build custom reports.
  • I can only get the best views in IE.
I think the SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is great for any company that does any type of networking. I previously worked at a manufacturing plant that could have really used these tools. It may not be appropriate for companies that have only a few computers and a small wired network.

We use SolarWinds Network Performance Manager within the network engineering group to help monitor the health of the network. We use it with alerting to monitor device state (up/down) so that we can be proactive in resolving outages. We also use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor our WAN and Internet links for both state (up/down) as well as utilization. We use the net flow module to monitor traffic flows and as a troubleshooting tool to find what traffic is using up bandwidth on links.
  • SolarWinds Network Performance Manager is easy to set up and configure.
  • The default views out of the box are a really good starting point so not a lot of tweaking is needed to get started monitoring.
  • I would like to see support for Cisco IWAN in order to be able to monitor PfRv3 and traffic routing in an IWAN deployment.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is a great product that works out of the box for network discovery and is very scalable. It could be used in large and small environments.

I used SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor to monitor traffic across my entire organization; it polls all of my Cisco routers so I can measure traffic on my WAN segments as well as my primary ISP circuit. I used it to address slowness or congestion and to look for root cause of traffic issues.
  • It presents a nice graphical format of traffic data making it quick to recognize and analyze data.
  • It breaks down data by location quickly and easily.
  • The application is buggy.
  • It is a resource hog.
  • The application itself is slow to respond and react.
  • The application became so challenging to manage, constantly causing OS issues and needing constant reboots that we quit using it.
I cannot think of any. We were full deployed with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor but it was so problematic to manage we simply turned it off.
