Reviews
(201-225 of 236)NPM provides insight into network that I could NOT do without
- Sort bandwidth usage from endpoint IP address or Interface.
- See type of traffic passing important interfaces. Using SolarWinds NPM we were able to identify a unusual IPSEC issue which was affecting our entire network - and resolve it.
- Drill down to exact time periods to see throughput.
- I would like to see BGP related information in SolarWinds NPM.
SolarWinds NPM review
- Granularity of monitoring network equipment.
- Intuitive interface.
- Easy to use.
- Licensing model is steep.
- Different feautres are broken into modules.
- Server requirements are kind of high.
Solarwinds NPM VS PRTG & Cisco Prime
- Tracking of online andoffline devices
- Multi vendor support
- i wish that it could allow to capture live usage of bandwidth per device (currently it supports 30 second interval for data capture)
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor Review
- Real-time bandwidth monitoring. Provides me an accurate picture so we can review and compare with ISP providers to help improve performance and or make recommendations for upgrades to sites. We have paying students that demand a decent connection regardless of the fact they may not be using the network for academic related surfing.
- Identify types of network traffic. Pinpoint repeat and consistent offending endpoints. Helping to create tighter ACLs and firewall rules to block unwanted sites.
- Notification of nodes down. This allows us as the network team to get a head start on solving ISP related issues. We have redundant connections involving 2 or more ISP's this allows us to easily detwrmine which ISP is down.
- Report generation. Creation of specific detailed reports is long winded and complex. It is not just drag and drop of elements you wish to monitor. Adding the ease for importing shared report templates from other users globally would be a huge improvement.
- Topographical network mapping of individual sites is too complicated. Make it so I can add to a blank template to one or more nodes then the interfaces of each node. At the end of the day there are other products for network mapping paid and unpaid that are doing a better job.
Oversight is key to managing 24x7 high volume operations
- Immediate notification alerts when connectivity or usage thresholds are exceeded. The reliability and consistency of the process is key to providing support.
- Detailed information provided in a variety of formats. Allows various groups to review data in formats that work best for them and are clear and easy to use.
- The ability to create groups that reflect our infrastructure. Allow support personnel to get an immediate view of status of a particular set of network and/or server equipment.
- Alert management capability. Great ability to manage alerts during maintenance periods.
- Continue to enhance the UI ease of use. The format and ease of finding information is good but continuous improvements are useful.
NPM review
- Alerts me when traffic spikes.
- Helps me determine the nature of traffic.
- Alerts me when network is not healthy.
- Single pane of glass would be nice.
- Seems hard to navigate for beginners.
Sharp tool for Network Monitoring
- Exploring network traffic over time with detailed graphs showing bandwidth, packet loss, latency.
- Heads up display of top 10 potential issues in terms of current response time, packet loss, CPU load, memory used, disk space used, interface percent utilization, interface traffic, errors and discards.
- Quickly checking firmware versions, up-time, ports in use and other general information regarding network devices.
- I'd prefer a virtual appliance delivery model and one that was not dependent on Microsoft Windows and SQL Server technologies.
Review from a SolarWinds Newbie
- At a glance on the NPM Summary tab I can see a list of all the ports that are monitored and what there status is.
- I can see the Active Alerts and how long they have been active.
- Interfaces with High Percent Utilization is easily viewable. This is good to know if you are troubleshooting a broadcast storm, or other network issues.
- I have not been using SolarWinds NPM long enough to find any weaknesses.
SolarWinds at a Glance
- SolarWinds lets you tailor what you see, but lets you delve further if necessary.
- Solarwinds allows you to tailor itself to your needs for monitoring.
- It communicates with network devices using industry standard protocols.
- Because it can do so much, Solarwinds can be intimidating to get started with. Offering more "canned" viewing screens would be helpful.
Unify
- Easy to deploy customized views with a very good look and feel.
- Easy to install and to expand.
- The limitation on group usage. If we get more than 3000 groups the web experience is terrible.
- There are still a great number of additional applications to some tasks not available on the GUI.
- NPM should monitor its own infrastructure.
- Licensing! I have more than 2 dozen servers with 17 pollers. Its a mess have to licence one by one.
Solarwinds
- It is easy to implement. Two years ago as a novice sys admin I could set up and start using the software for my whole network so quickly. It was as easy as setting up a social media account. Next, next, done.
- It works. There are lots of people selling lots of software. But at the end of the day so little of them do the job they claim to do. And SolarWinds is one piece of software that really does its job well.
- Good performance. Installed in a VM with decent cpu, ram etc. And it will do its best with the resources at hand.
- Instant support. We purchased the software through retailers yet get the support directly from SolarWinds. It is fast and there are people that really know what they are doing.
- There is something called Network Atlas where we manually download and run it in a different environment. Yet the piece of software is the best thing about SolarWinds NPM. It would be great if it is directly implemented into the software with some ready to use quick templates like VLAN based grouping.
- I think net-flow is a must have for any complete network monitor product but it is an independent piece of software which doesn't really have too many specialties itself. Implementing software like net-flow, engineering toolset etc., directly under SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor would be more convenient.
- Configuring SNMP on devices can sometimes be a pain. If I could give SolarWinds the credentials, ip etc. and let the software do an auto configuration for me, it would be really helpful.
NPM - monitoring for a modern datacenter and enterprise network
- Quick straight-forward interface.
- Email alerts are helpful when out of office.
- Mapping feature is unique and a useful diagram for larger sites.
- The enclosed DB engine seems to have more problems than others. Should have connected to our in-house Oracle DB.
- Not really an issue - but would LOVE an agent that ran in the Windows Notification Area for alerts.
- The Virtualization Tab provides great insight into my VMWare and my Microsoft Hyper-V environments. All the important information for both environments is consolidated in a single pane.
- Event Manager is easy and quick to configure especially when compared to other network monitoring systems out there. I was up and alerting in no time with SolarWinds.
- The Thwack user community is another great feature with SolarWinds. If I ever run into an issue, with monitoring or configuration, the first place I look is Thwack. Using this method often saves me loads of time in determining what my issue is and how to correct it.
- I wish there was a way to create a printable network map from Solarwinds, show me what is connected where.
- Features on the administration page can sometimes be obscured or hard to find.
SolarWind Network Performance Monitor is particularly well suited for small to medium sized organizations. The price point is palatable given the number of features included. I have tried to use some of the "free" products out there and to me, none compare. Ease of use is very good which means in a small to medium sized organization you don't have to spend a lot of time learning or going to classes to learn how to use it.
I have never used this product in a large environment (more than 1000 nodes) but given what I see I would expect that it would scale well.
Know IT issues before your customers do!
- SolarWinds does an excellent job of warning the Network Engineer of outages or anomalies that pop up.
- SolarWinds provides reports to show statistics we use for billing and maintaining service.
- SolarWinds offers a variety of alert options for different areas we monitor on the network.
- Some of the reports do not reflect the information to the level we would like.
Small Private University's take on Solarwinds NPM
- Long term trends and graphing of performance and stats
- At times setting up the systems initially it almost provided too many options making it overwhelming.
- The alerting system used to be very cumbersome to figure out how to create custom alerts and triggers. This has begun to improve with web based access to this part of the system
SolarWinds NPM worths the money!
- Identify what kinds of traffic
- Locate the devices which generate the traffic
- Generate dynamic charts
- Generate alerts based on thresholds
- Costs & pricing models
- No standalone option
Solarwinds Network Performance Monitor at a glance
- Monitors network equipment by using common SNMP MIBs.
- Monitors detailed information, including routing table changes, and custom SNMP MIB's with very little work.
- Rapid alerting system that has a variety of forwarding options.
- Network mapping tool is great, but could use additional improvements in automatically detecting L2/L3 topology.
- Grouping items, by group or by dependency is helpful, but groups/dependencies do not have the ability to interoperate.
- Alert capabilities are pretty good overall, but wish it had more granularity for escalations.
Set it, and forget it.
- Informs us of network errors and utilization.
- Alerts us of network outages and helps discover which device is actually the root cause.
- Monitors disk utilization.
- Everything that we use it for it is working perfectly. I honestly do not have anything that I would improve.
SolarWinds NPM
