What is SolarWinds NPM?

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) delivers comprehensive network fault monitoring and performance management that scales and expands with a company's network monitoring needs. Users can collect and view availability, real-time and historical statistics from routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and any other SNMP-, ICMP-, or WMI-enabled devices directly from a web browser.

The vendor states that SolarWinds users can get a full NPM installation up and running the same day they download, and that implementation does not require a team of consultants. NPM provides visibility into the health of network devices and servers on the network, ensuring that users have needed real-time information to keep their network running at peak performance.

Network Performance Monitor helps IT Pros:

  • Detect, diagnose, and resolve network performance issues and avoid downtime
  • Respond to multiple condition checks, correlated events, and device dependencies
  • Automatically calculate capacity exhaustion dates using customizable thresholds based on peak and average usage
  • Streamline network troubleshooting with a Web interface
  • View paths to critical business services hop-by-hop, even into the cloud, with the NetPath™ feature
  • Get deeper visibility into complex network devices with Network Insight™ features for Cisco ASA firewalls, Cisco Nexus switches, and F5 BIG-IP load balancers

Users recommend considering the whole stack of Network Modules on the SolarWinds platform instead of NPM as a standalone product. They believe the other modules are valuable additions for monitoring, managing, and analyzing the network. SolarWinds NPM is considered the best network performance monitoring solution on the market. Users suggest using it for network monitoring and exploring other modules for specific infrastructure monitoring. While NPM is a good tool for network monitoring, users advise looking into alternative options for advanced monitoring needs. Some users suggest improving the navigation to make it more fluid and user-friendly. Overall, users recommend SolarWinds NPM for managing and monitoring network infrastructures due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness. They also recommend trying the live action feature and Meraki for enhanced network analytics. Users suggest considering other products with better UI and capabilities. SolarWinds NPM is worth the price if affordable, especially with sponsorship. Working with third-party services or SolarWinds to properly set up the tool is recommended. Using multiple tools in conjunction with NPM provides more visibility. Users recommend signing up for Thwack and utilizing their resources for assistance with SolarWinds products. Trying the demo first before purchasing is advisable. NPM is considered a core module in every company that chooses SolarWinds as their monitoring tool. It is important to ensure that the server can handle the software. Experienced staff maximizes the benefits of the platform. Users suggest downloading a trial copy of NPM to test it out. SolarWinds NPM is ideal for a homogenous, wired network. If you have any devices that are not Cisco, Juniper, or Brocade it takes a significant amount of time to set the software up. It is also much better at alerting than time series reporting. They really want you to have all of the licenses in Orion to get the full use of the software.

I recommend this because it is a solution that simply works right out of the box. If you are looking for an open-source solution, most require far too much tinkering under the hood and are nowhere near as polished as SolarWinds. I have looked at several open-source alternatives, but none come close to the polish that SolarWinds has.

It is well-suited if you have someone who will take ownership of managing NPM. It is harder to get the full benefits of NPM if you don't have someone who invests time in setting it up and maintaining it.

Great for places that don't have a network map and do not know their network. I always suggest it when going to a business that does not have a dedicated network person, or had one suddenly leave with all their network knowledge. It really helps being able to see it from a top-down view. The automatic poll of all the devices also really helps find everything on your network.

NPM is the perfect network monitoring solution because of all the pre-built templates and ease of use. I would highly recommend this tool for any small monitoring team. It will allow you to look like you have an entire team of admins when it can be easily managed by a few people. SolarWinds does a great job in constantly updating and improving the software and upgrades are a piece of cake.

SolarWinds NPM is great for any organization that wants to monitor and manage their IT infrastructure. Creating dashboards is fairly easy and it is very easy to get professional results. Reporting features are pretty robust and it's easy to create simple reports. I think if you have a need for very granular monitoring that might be a weakness of NPM.

It is a good tool, but it really depends on the needs and size of your organization. For a small to mid-size company it is a great fit, but it has limitations when used in a large enterprise. Having to run agents to unlock the full power of the product is a limitation in my opinion. Most enterprise level tools are agent-less now

Larger enterprise environments with multiple locations is a well suited environment. It provides a central point of monitoring and configuring globally across the organization.

May not be as suitable for smaller organizations as the smaller module subscriptions may still be more expensive than an organization would need for several modules.

It is well suited to monitor network devices and servers. We have more than 200 network switches in our environment as well as 300 wireless access points. It helps us to keep tabs on all of that in one location. When there has been an outage that affect multiple areas of the campus, it allows us to see what the root of the problem is.

It's well suited for a lot of different types of networks but I would highly recommend looking at which ports you want to monitor and set up a template before importing all the network gear.

I believe NPM is well suited in scenarios where the business has dozens of network equipment and/or servers to monitor. Since it is able to monitor virtually anything, from servers, to network equipment, virtual machines, and wireless devices it is best suited in and environment that supports several different types of devices and within an organization who needs these services up and running at all times.

It is excellent in a single-company, single-office environment. However, once you try to start limiting access, NPM's credo seems to be "security through obscurity"; it is very easy to locate devices that one shouldn't be able to monitor simply by editing the URL.

NPM is well suited in multi site environments with general pipe overviews as a requirement. This is paramount in companies that have sites with network pipes that are not up to par with this day and age. It also could be used in a school environment as a good means of tracking utilization.

SolarWinds NPM is the eyes and ears of our network. It gives us global visibility into everything on our network and its status. Without it, we would be blind to issues and be reactive instead of proactive when things happen. We use it to check bandwidth constraints and also to troubleshoot outages to trace back to the root cause. We also use Cisco Prime for our networking environment because it does a few things better than NPM.

It all comes down to making the best use of our time. Typically users would rather use your time than their own. For example, in the case of poor database performance a DB administrator will most likely blame the network. They would like you to use your time to provide evidence to the contrary. This will allow them to use their time for something other than troubleshooting their server or database. Once the innocence of the network is proven then and only then will the DB administrator look elsewhere for a solution. In the meantime clients suffer longer and more time is lost. Solarwinds NPM saves time. If the network is performing as it should it only takes a moment to verify and share the information. If there is a network issue NPM will have already sent an alert long before the DB admin makes the call. What more could you want?

Very well suited for monitoring your nodes, however it is not well suited for out of the box hard drive capacity monitoring. The custom alerts are fairly easy to set up, but out of the box they are not available.
