We have all IT departments involved with the deployment of SolarWinds for proactive monitoring, alerting, and reports for over 100 remote office location and two data centers. Currently, Netflow and Netpath are tools that we are building out and finding a great deal of insight with.

  • There is a lot of information and it can be daunting to know where to start.
Has proven to be a great solution that replaces multiple products, rolling them into one system for easy reporting, alerting, and staying on top of systems as they are added.

SW is used for monitoring various Windows & Microsoft applications for corporate IT. It is used for software like Active Directory, exchanges and such and help with keeping these in good health.
  • Best network monitoring possible.
  • Can do firewall & F5 stuff very well.
  • Network devices backups very useful.
  • KVM is missing, this virtualization platform is on the rise.
  • Freshly installed Linux machine usually shows a few false positives.
  • Ceph storage monitoring missing.
  • IPMI server hardware monitoring is a must!
For anything to do with network monitoring switches, routers and such SolarWinds is very good and highly recommended.
For open source tools for example Linux, Ceph KVM, etc., I can say SolarWinds has plenty of room for improvement, this is also true for hardware monitoring of servers such as IPMI.

It is being used to monitor applications and services across the organization. The plan was to replace What's Up Gold and Nagios with SAM. I've used it at many organizations when I was doing professional services on SolarWinds products.
  • It let's you build in depth component monitors to watch almost anything.
  • It allows you to grab additional information at the time an alert is triggered to help provide a complete picture for the admin.
  • Most of the functions are tied into the API which makes integrations and automations possible.
  • The new node based licensing model makes it difficult to justify the price for nodes that only utilize a few components.
  • Script results need to be a statistic. It would be a lot more useful if we could populate a table of results, including alpha-numeric strings, boolean, etc.
  • A lot of the AppInsight components cannot be disabled. You have to either use the whole template or nothing.
SAM allows for specific, custom and in depth monitoring. However, the node based pricing makes the cost justification difficult for the majority of nodes that only use a few component monitors.

SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor is being used effectively in our organization to monitor applications, databases, processes, services, etc. We are having multiple instances across the globe with separate instances being procured in each region. We are ble to manage and monitor entire customer applications, servers, etc. in an easy way.

  • Easy to create templates.
  • Easy to deploy templates.
  • Easy to manage templates.
  • It covers lot of things for monitoring server and application level parameters.
  • As I have experienced while monitoring processes, it should give the exact process name while selecting for Linux/Unix related systems.
  • Oracle database monitoring requires lot of work to do.
  • Oracle database monitoring requires permissions for a lot of other views or tables, which we have to mention explicitly for component monitors. But the documentation mentions the views, which varies from views for component monitors.
It's easy to use and navigate and provides a lot of features to monitor servers and applications. It covers a lot of customer needs and can do a lot of customization using the scripting option provided in the SolarWinds SAM module.

Basically, it is used to monitor several servers. Mostly, we monitor disk size, backup files, health of ESX hosts, and SQL DB. It is used across the whole organization.
  • Immediately alarms if the disk has not enough free space.
  • The most powerful tool is that you can design your own monitor, depending for example on the existence of a file, its size, and its contents.
  • Mainly, if the issue is resolved, SAM also alerts.
  • Sometimes, changes in the equipment or on the server system cause issues, i.e. change of the FQDN of the server. Resolution is available but when there is a problem with SAM, the monitoring stops, so sometimes it causes more serious problems.
From simple to more complex monitoring, it provides a solution.

The IT department uses SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor to monitor our entire server environment, both physical and virtual. We are mainly a Windows shop and do additional monitoring of Active Directory, SQL, Citrix and custom apps or specific services we are looking to monitor. It keeps track of server up/downs, memory/CPU and application outages.
  • Server health, using insight through WMI for what Microsoft is seeing from within the box.
  • Monitoring services/apps through AppInsight and being able to add specific services not included or for other applications.
  • Sometimes and easy button would be nice to simplify the views and data collected.
  • Sales calls are persistent for anyone who has any involvement, which is just plain annoying.
I feel it shines in monitoring a mix of virtual and physical servers. There are other products that have issues with that physical piece, but SAM doesn't care which one it is. While a bear to maintain at times, the custom-ability is another place it does well. Being able to monitor things not included/out of the box is a key feature. The user community is strong and has a lot of useful input.

We use SolarWinds throughout the whole organization, for monitoring managed systems for our end-customers, and for in-depth analysis in case of incidents. Customized dashboards have been implemented per team. We have set up extensive alert triggers that interface with our main ticketing system for direct analysis by our Support Team. We have also automated a vast majority of the daily checks and monthly reporting via SolarWinds.
  • Monitoring leveraging trusted and built-in protocols and techniques, option but no mandatory requirement to install agent software on monitored servers.
  • Endless monitoring possibilities with the option to create own scripts for several operating systems.
  • Clean, responsive web dashboards that can be customized to suit each team's needs within the managed services organization.
  • Multiple backend databases support for the SolarWinds modules; e.g. Oracle, MySQL, DB2, etc. At this moment, only Microsoft SQL Server is supported.
  • Multiple Operating Systems support for the SolarWinds modules applicative server(s) e.g. Linux. At this moment only Microsoft Windows is supported.
  • In SolarWinds SAM, a script in for example the Linux Script Component has to be designed in a particular format in order to return max. 10 pairs of "statistic+messages" as script output for SolarWinds to process the returned data. Would be more convenient if this output generated by scripts can be more flexible.
  • On Web Dashboards, it's not possible to return results of a predefined SQL Query in any format required (e.g. a table with rows like the actual table on SQL Server is structured).
  • When creating reports or Dashboard resources with filters, the filter names are added above the resultant report or Dashboard blocks, which in most cases is redundant and there should be an option to hide it.
SolarWinds Server is ultimately suited for small to mid-sized companies wanting to monitor their in-house applications and servers, as "one pane of glass" - tool for the internal IT Department. Also suited for managed services providers as allows for 'multi-tenant' setup. Less suited for specific applications that are not supported out-of-the-box or for companies running iSeries.

Our company uses SolarWinds to monitor our Microsoft Windows Server environment including most, if not all, of the Microsoft applications running on those servers; that includes SQL, Exchange, SharePoint, ActiveDirectory, etc. running on those Virtual Machines.
  • When adding applications to be monitored to SAM, the baselines included in the product normally require very little tweaking.
  • Creating granular alerts for each trigger is very helpful when troubleshooting the exact cause of an issue.
  • Since SAM can monitor so many different aspects of an application, pollers can become overloaded very quickly and require attention to proper sizing.
  • Creating and sizing Operational Kiosk maps to fit specific screen sizes can be tricky.
Discovering applications such as Exchange, SQL, and SharePoint for monitoring is very straightforward. The basic thresholds are very good, however combining thresholds for applications and OS sometimes cause issues. As an example, Exchange will use as much RAM as the OS has available which in turn will trigger OS alerts due to high CPU memory utilization.

We the application monitor to both keep track of and monitor the nodes on our network. It not only allows us to pinpoint areas of failure, but is a thorough system to documents IP addresses, MAC addresses, and SMTP devices such as networked cameras. The alert system in SolarWinds is probably the most useful tool - we have setup intricate monitors and alerts to correctly alert the right department at the right time. The versatility of the program allows us to monitor everything from servers, to switches, to specific processes running on VM's hundreds of miles away.
  • Versatility: The program allows for monitoring of almost any system, simple or complex and allows for intricately programmed alerts based on each monitor.
  • Ease of use: Type in the URL, and you are greeted with a fully customizable dashboard with any and all of the pertinent features to your workflow.
  • Modular: The program itself is very powerful, but the ability to add or remove features based on need is exceptional compared to competitors.
  • Help links & additional tool-tips. Having thorough and easy to understand instructions is the most important part of software this comprehensive and it would be great to include direct links to wiki pages.
  • Monitor/Alert templates. The program could use more and simpler alerts and monitors.
The best use for SolarWinds is a comprehensive organizational and network monitoring tool. The network atlas/mapping tool is extremely useful for visualization of the physical locations of cameras, switches and numerous other network devices. SolarWinds is not the be-all-end-all when it comes to performance, however. It should be used only on large-scale server clusters that can handle the load efficiently.

SAM is used primarily for operations support, and is extended to datacenter and technical support teams. While we use some canned monitors, the bulk of our SAM components are custom written script monitors using Perl, PowerShell, VB, or TSQL. We monitor everything...
  • Flexibility with specific monitoring requirements by creating our own scripts to control output messaging, and monitor for statistics that are unique to our in-house written applications.
  • Out of the box support for common vendors' hardware MIBS or API to report on chassis hardware issues, etc.
  • Customization of the web portal provide specialized dashboards for our various NOC teams using Orion, as well as executive dashboards, alert boards, historical reporting, etc.
  • User roll granularity. While this has improved over the years, the user rights are not granular enough.
  • Profile based views. End users frequently want to modify their own views, but views are generally global. Under account rights, I would like to be able to allow an account to have a profile based set of views. It's also important to easily review a users specific profile views to check for resource abuse.
  • Better information on user activity, views usage, etc. Knowing what views are used the most or least would be helpful information when considering what works and what doesn't, what needs to be cleaned up, etc...
SAM is both extremely easy to use out of the box, as it is customizable for advanced users and complex environments. The user community is an outstanding resource for users trying to take their monitoring to the next level using advanced scripts and customization. I still struggle with full app stack monitoring, and we lack visibility with some of our custom apps (Java), where I'm hoping to see some growth out of the AppOptics purchase.

We currently use this app exclusively in the infrastructure/networking department. It allows for real-time monitoring of assets and allows for historical data, which is useful to our team.

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) is currently used to monitor the server and applications that are essential to the well being of our organization. Whenever we have a problem or an abnormality, we're alerted and we can take action more efficiently by knowing exactly where the problem is coming from.

It also gives us a quick overview of what's happening in the back-end of our organization.

We're also using it to monitor some special devices that we wouldn't be able to monitor efficiently. But SAM is really a great tool to help us monitor and take action accordingly to each situation.

Setting up SAM to monitor unorthodox application isn't the easiest thing to do but in the end of the day, if you can get it to work properly to monitor what you want, you'll be set to go and it will work like a charm.

  • If it wasn't for the documentation and the support, some configurations wouldn't be functional or efficient.
  • You have to make a group to make the SAM module more efficient.

We have an internal data transfer application that is used and it can calls multiple side-application.
With all the application monitored, we know where there's a bottleneck when the end-user doesn't receive his data.

By having everything monitored in SAM, we know exactly where it goes wrong and where to address the issue.

We use SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer to help deal with Oracle performance issues. This is a primary source of information on what could be causing poor database performance. WE also use it to help identify poorly performing SQL queries by database wait time.
  • Showing top waits created via SQL queries in Oracle.
  • Provide supporting information about those queries, such as cause for wait, username, and workstation.
  • Showing anomalies in the database on a day to day basis
  • Cost is high and requires ongoing subscription.
  • Too many yearly sales calls trying to get me to buy more.
If you need an application to help with database performance then this is a fantastic tool. It can do all kinds of databases and the connection set-up is very easy. I personally use this on both SQL and Oracle, but Oracle is our main focus.

I have used SolarWinds products over the years, both free and paid. I've been involved in many network deployments, migrations and performance troubleshooting issues. SolarWinds products do a real nice job of finding all of your network assets, inventorying them and keeping a track on the possible issues going on.

The products only get better as development grows. Its a great visual tool to analyze your network and get notified when your assets are unavailable. There are other free tools out there to do this, but Server monitor takes care of everything you can think of.

Our environment is very distributed throughout the United States. SAM gives me good insight to what's happening in our various data centers and local sites, in addition to the valuable information that I am getting from NPM about the nodes themselves, resource usage and other metrics. Thanks to the SAM alerts and App Insight I am able to better tune the applications that we are monitoring (AD/SQL mostly). It has exposed some misconfigurations on our SQL servers and lack of resources on some servers. In addition to identifying servers that needed more resources to be allocated we identified some nodes that were over provisioned allowing us to reclaim processors, memory and storage.

If I were to offer a criticism it would be that between NPM, SAM and other SolarWinds monitors that are part of the suite there can be an overwhelming amount of data. It isn't trivial to tweak what you are monitoring and getting alerts for. Depending on the size of the environment don't be surprised if it takes a lot of resources (human time) to get it setup and working to suit you. It will work doing a next, next install but you can end up getting overwhelmed by data you might not care about.

  • SAM and App Insight are handy to look at the whole environment. When looking at a node I can see how that fits into the whole enterprise. If a issue is reported I can see that there might be some environmental issue at the root of the problem and not necessarily the server that is being reported. For instance the SQL server is fine but a switch upstream from that server is having issue or there is a internet circuit down. This saves a lot of troubleshooting time.
  • When you see monitors that are out of tolerance there are immediate resources to help make sense of the reported issue. Not just that something is out of sorts but why.
  • The metrics that are collected simplifies the process of identifying trends and the predictability monitors do a good job of letting you know that not only are resources are becoming tight on a node but a estimate when they will become critical. This give you that chance to plan for the growth instead if a reaction to some critical event.
  • I have used both WhatsUp Gold and SolarWinds. One item that I think WhatsUp does particularly well is customizing the user interface for each user. Customizing the interface in SolarWinds is cumbersome. A change to a page layout by one user affects all users that use that page. The security is very granular and it can take some work to get what you need. There is nothing ad hoc about it. But this is more of a complaint about the whole Orion interface that displays the SAM data in addition to data from all the other modules.
  • I would also like to see some improvements in node configuration, I would like for it to be easier to manage nodes as groups. You can groups nodes together for monitoring purposes but there isn't an obvious way to manage them as a group for instance add/remove monitors and pollers. I would like to see a feature to add a server to a group and it automatically gets a predefined set of pollers and monitors assigned.
  • The new modern Dashboard should have shipped with more canned items, a fair representation from the standard legacy offerings. At a minimum the newest SAM release should have included at AppInsight standard items. The Dynamic Designer is difficult to use because no example of whats returned for a is provided. Without an intimate knowledge of the schema its cumbersome.
With a limited operations staff it would be next to impossible to get the insight into all the server and applications stacks in our environment. The reality is that there would be issues that would go undiscovered for who knows how long. If there's no smoke you might not notice many issues. SolarWinds Server & Application Manager (SAM) has worked well for us to work with application owners to show that performance issues that they may perceive are not part of the environment but the application configuration. The biggest benefit to me is just shortening the time to resolution for issues and more importantly providing me with information that allows me to be proactive and attack problems before they are noticed by our users.

Solarwinds SAM is used by the Information Services & Technology department to monitor a variety of systems in order to ensure that applications function well and meet the needs of the clinical staff. Some of the uses at our facility include DNS User Experience, Enterprise Fax Monitoring, DHCP, SQL, IIS, Citrix, and some specialized Windows applications. For physicians, fast response time in applications is crucial, so for them every second gained is important.
  • Built-in AppInsight for SQL and IIS makes it very easy to monitor those systems.
  • Overall, SAM is very easy to use and provides a great deal of information.
  • Because of the amount of data that can be collected, it is easy to be overwhelmed if you are not careful.
  • While SolarWinds tries to simplify SAM's operation, at times it can seem overly complex. Additional AppInsight monitors would be nice.
SAM can be a very valuable tool to help troubleshoot application performance issues. There are so many features and tools that you can go as deep as you would like. Options such as Application Dependency Mapping provides insight to the connections coming into a server and you can also monitor response times to help pinpoint issues (is it the server, client, network, etc.). Because we utilize Cisco UCS servers for our voice infrastructure, the ability to monitor the health and performance of those servers is critical. Similar insight to our HP server infrastructure is also available using SAM.

We currently use SolarWinds to monitor our network infrastructure for 90+ clinics as well as our DB environments to ensure optimal data transmission takes place. At Peoplefinders.com I used the product, both to monitor the Network performance for our various websites for B2B and B2P operation, as well as to proactively respond to poorly performing sales figures, as there was a direct correlation between 'Website access speed' and 'Sales $.' Thus, the tool allowed us to eliminate the network as a possible root cause.
  • It monitors many devices, which gives it flexibility.
  • It has a solid graphics interface, and with some API use one can present graphical reports that are strong.
  • It does not require much maintenance, and the upgrade path is relatively painless.
  • I would like the ability to set trending 'capacity' thresholds. For example, I would like to know that someone is pushing 10Meg of data per min on the pipe for 3 minutes. I would like to get notifications on that.
I see SolarWinds to be an invaluable tool for an infrastructure team for Network as well as DB monitoring point of view. It is not a tool to perform application performance troubleshooting, but can assist in that area indirectly.

To be honest we do not have this fully deployed and configured as we have not had the time. Out of the box I am using it as a monitor and alert system to notify me when things are not consistent or available.

  • Monitoring-I am able to set trends based on how I expect my equipment to run.
  • Reporting-I can pull up reporting for trends to see when things are not in alignment.
  • Alerting-I can be alerted or notified if something is out of balance or unavailable.
  • None that I can think of until we fully deploy it.
Again, not fully deployed. Where it has made a big impact is visibility of our exchange server, SQL server, and virtualization to prevent issues from rising during the production day. I will note that SAM brought to my attention a server that was using up way too many resources for its role, and after investigating, we identified the server was hacked.

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor together with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is being used to monitor all network devices, physical and virtual servers. I would say the system is being used by the whole organization, as we are covering all applications in the company. All URLs/services/process/disk space are monitored with response times. After implementing the SolarWinds SAM, we are getting insights into the application response times. Also, the live performance data for servers is amazing. It also addresses the ease of building different reports for the organization. Alerts and reports can be customized to your needs. You will really feel the real difference if you are moving from SCOM reports to SolarWinds. SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor also allows you to build MAPS/Diagrams with live view, so it's easy for your NOC team to monitor and report. Custom tagging allows you to group servers in the same project which will come in handy when you create views. Custom views and the custom menu are really helpful to customize the view for each individual/department.

SAM module mostly used by IT monitoring team to report more detailed info in case of issues. We are using it for proactive monitoring, more or less deep view of app performance running on business critical servers, better than just hardware health info. Team is able to start fix with good value of data, provided by monitoring team.

One case I had with Redis app, data about one app server cannot be checked on one page, if you don't do some custom dashboards, oh, dashboards are fully editable. TBH, after almost 2 year, am still searching how to. Overall, tool does what it is for.

We use Server and Application Monitor to provide us a greater in-depth analysis of our IIS, FTP, Exchange applications, DHCP servers, DNS services, our Active Directory and Sharepoint amongst others. Using the results, we can pinpoint bottlenecks in performance for services, app pools, and other applications. This helps us spend less time trying to figure out the root cause and more time fixing the issue.
  • Server and Application Monitor does a great job with analyzing our Exchange environment and notifies us if there are issues with replication, the Information Store and other essential components of our email system.
  • For our DHCP service, Server and Application Monitor alerts us if there are IP conflicts, errors with the DHCP service or if scopes are nearly exhausted.
  • Server and Application Monitor Excels with providing information on the amount of web traffic our sites receive. It tracks the performance of essential web services and pinpoints bottlenecks.
  • Implementing a custom monitor can be cumbersome and frustrating.
  • Monitoring a lot of services can be taxing on your system.
  • Would like to see more SolarWinds approved templates available.
It is well suited for monitoring IIS Websites and keeping track of associated components like app pools, expiring certificates, With Server and Application Monitor, you can detect and be alerted when app pools have degraded. We use SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor to support our managed infrastructures on customers sites. They are individual silos and they check in with our pollers. Our internal support teams use the web interface to troubleshoot and preemptively fix issues for their specific customers. Additionally, we use powershell and SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor hand-in-hand for specific custom monitors for our applications.

SolarWinds is being used to monitor systems that are in place across the whole organization. Some alerts create incidents in our ticketing software using a third-party orchestration software. Server and Application Monitor is combined with several other SolarWinds products/modules to get more capabilities. At least four team members manage different products with access provided to dozens of IT users. The intention is to be proactive to mitigate issues before the customers experience issues or use the data collected to improve troubleshooting.



  • The online community is a good resource to solve monitoring questions.
  • The default web page displays are very functional and they can be modified for specific teams and uses.
  • The built in alerts and monitoring application templates are useful.
  • Training and Thwack lab videos are very informative.
  • I understand that our system is not highly available, but every 4 to 6 months SolarWinds fills up logs or ports or numerous other maladies that cause it to stop monitoring. Sometimes this causes a big enough issue that Monday morning the whole system is crashed. Several times it stopped polling devices without any outward signs. One time it stopped monitoring and wasn't discovered until we were trying to look at processor performance on one specific system and it showed that it had stopped recording data 4 days prior. The polling engines were up, but everything had just stopped polling. SolarWinds does not do any root cause analysis, but they do a lot of rebuilding components when systems fail. Sometimes that means a complete reinstall. I have used many ways to monitor the monitoring system so I can determine when it has quietly failed. The simplest, but somewhat effective way, has been to ask SW to send me an email every 4 hours. That requires me to check my email evenings and all weekend and after 4 months I have still missed a couple of outages.
  • Nearly every SolarWinds upgrade has created issues with stability and monitoring downtime. The first time I experienced the upgrade nightmare, it was completed by a SolarWinds engineer who was attempting to fix an issue. That was the time I learned to always take a VM snapshot before an upgrade was attempted. That first time could not be backed out and ended up causing problems for months. This upgrade problem must be true for many customers because the upgrade system has been changed a lot in the last three years. Support has been very responsive and usually can work through the problems. It is unfortunate that it consumes so much of my time for two to six weeks following an upgrade.
  • Our current Strategic Account Manager is useless. Instead of helping with a support issue that had been going on for 6 months, he suggested we pay for higher-level support for faster response times. Then no follow-up until he sent a form letter a month later asking if we have any current needs! To be fair we have had two other Account Managers that were responsive when we needed assistance. Those two moved on to other companies. It is especially significant to note that we only contact the Account Manager as a last resort and in three years that has only been about 2 or 3 times. The current one had only one request for assistance from me and of course, that will be the last time I reach out to him.
  • As with any company's support, SolarWinds has good and less than helpful support technicians. Several times I have had to request a different tech, or just close and open a new case when the tech provided answers like, just turn off that monitor on the SolarWinds application server instead of figuring out why it frequently alerts. There has also been resistance to escalating cases when progress has halted. On the other side of that is, there are several support technicians that know the products well and have had experience with many common issues. Those techs get things fixed quickly.
The size of our environment seems well suited to SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor. There are about 2000 nodes, 13000 elements, 6000 volumes, and 4000 interfaces. I am sure it can be scaled up to accommodate larger organizations, but that would require additional investment in hardware. The server requirements are very high and pushing desired guest Virtual Machines specifications on our current hosts. Unfortunately, being a Health Care organization is not a good fit when not having high availability implemented. I do not have experience with other large scale enterprise monitoring systems, but reliability is my concern with SolarWinds.

Monitor all servers both physical and virtual, including Windows Linux and multiple OS. We use it to monitor alerts on all systems and pull performance metrics from the environment. It gives a great overall view of your environment and helps you to be proactive.

  • Sometimes the application can drag slowly, but really no complaints.
Well suited to keep watch over all your systems. Almost any software or hardware can be monitored here with alerts and keeps you proactive rather than reactive to potential issues!
