We use SolarWinds SAM to monitor our entire environment, from network equipment to servers and applications and storage.
  • Very customizable so you only get what you are looking for.
  • Works great out of box with the built in templates.
  • User templates uploaded to Thwack allow you to find a solution to a monitoring problem without implementing it from scratch.
Cons
  • Too integrated into the suite of products. Fields that are needed for network equipment must be filled out for servers and applications.
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) can monitor just about anything (except printers). Big problem is different licensing for each little component. If I want to monitor storage or virtual environment or logs, it's a separately licensed component

SolarWinds is being used to monitor our entire Infrastructure, from Server & Application to Network monitoring. SolarWinds help us maintain and respond proactively to incidents and perhaps before they happen. We have great visibility with what's going on in our Infrastructure and if devices or applications are being affected. SolarWinds gives me peace of mind knowing that I have a system that will alert me if something is wrong.
  • Server hardware monitoring.
  • Server performance, CPU utilization, memory utilization, disk spaced utilized.
  • Application monitoring gives us a clear view on how our applications are behaving and making sure they're running.
Cons
  • I believe that SolarWinds covers all the areas that I, as an engineer need to monitor to assure business continuity.
  • I have no recommendations at this point, keep up the good work.
I believe that SolarWinds is well suited for any type and business size. From my experience, I have seen SolarWinds mostly in medium to enterprise size businesses. Some companys are small and don't have the capital to purchase SolarWinds' products because it's not cheap. I also believe that it's less appropriate in an environment that is not running critical applications or services.

We use the SAM module from Solarwinds to ensure the stable of services we provide to our end users is working as planned. It helps my small staff identify issues before they become outages and it helps me to ensure we are meeting our SLA from a performance standpoint.
  • SAM helps our support staff identify applications not meeting our designed SLAs. We have two industry specific applications that have memory leak issues and using this platform we are able to set threshold warnings up letting us know it is time to take a preventative step to make the applciation behave correctly.
  • SAM also allows us to monitor server performance so if we end up with logs that get out of control and start eating drive space up, we are promptly alerted so corrective action can take place before service degrades.
  • I like have the SAM trend reports so I can see how the performance of applications behave overtime so I can ensure we have enough compute resources to meet our growing business demands.
Cons
  • Really the price is about the only area I'd like to see SolarWinds get aggressive on. There are many players at different levels in this space, and I get questioned often on the need to spend as much as we do on SolarWinds.
If you are pretty small vanilla IT shop, running mostly Microsoft apps, this tool maybe overkill.

At my company, we use SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor along with many other SolarWinds products in tandem to monitor our SAAS data centers. Having a single pane of glass for monitoring most of our SolarWinds products is essential in keeping confusion for our administrators down and improving up time. Specifically, monitoring Windows services, alerting when they’re down, and immediately restarting them has been very valuable to my team. Additionally valuable has been the general ease-of-use of the product, and the courses and online training that come from the Thwak site have been a great experience for us.
  • General alerting for VM overutilization, CPU, RAM, etc.
  • Specific service level alerts and monitoring.
  • Alert grouping by email distribution list and escalation.
Cons
  • Log and Event manager needs to be integrated with the SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor web console.
Not sure about cloud-based monitoring. Is there a future for SolarWinds to implement this into SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM)?

The entire organization uses SolarWinds, from systems, development, and networking. It helps us monitor critical elements of the company and keep our uptime where we would like to see it.
  • Ability to keep an eye on key systems.
  • Ease of use by those who have limited experience with monitoring solutions.
  • Robust enough to be tuned to a specific use-case.
  • NCM helps us make sure we have backups of our configs should we lose a switch and need to RMA.
Cons
  • Sometimes the demand of additional pollers gets tiresome, and becomes very obvious when there are not adequate resources.
  • Bulk adding of nodes is a clunky and cumbersome process.
SolarWinds is good for monitoring many systems and ENTIRE systems. It is less than ideal for monitoring a specific process, like BGP status.
