SolarWinds SAM helps us track performance on our Microsoft SQL and IIS workloads. A great tool to hold historical data to investigate current performance issues. SolarWinds SAM templates have everything we are looking for and were great in helping us get set up quickly. We love the SolarWinds product lines and can't wait to see what else is coming up from them.
  • Hold historical performance data
  • Easy to use templates
  • Out of the box compatibility for Microsoft SQL and IIS workloads
Cons
  • Orion has some learning curve
  • SQL database set up can be difficulty
  • Some baselines could be easier to configure
SolarWinds has been working great for our SQL and IIS workloads. We do not use it for anything besides that as these are the only workloads that we would like detailed information on. We aren't using the up/down or storage limit monitors as something simplier like IPMon is better suited for those simple checks.

SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

We currently use Solarwinds Server & Application Monitor for monitoring and alerts for all our Servers. It is used primarily to help keeps us informed on the status of any of our servers. Such as space and capacity planning, uptime, CPU utilization, and allows to keep tabs on the many servers across our data center.
  • It does a good job of letting us know when a server goes offline, or when it is rebooted.
  • It warns us when we are getting low on disk space.
  • It lets us know if a node on the network, such as a switch or other critical network device, is offline.
  • It provides feedback in the case of an outage, letting us know time and the resources that were impacted by the outage.
Cons
  • Most alerting tools are a challenge to get fine tuned, Solar winds is no exception to this.
  • The GUI for managing the Alerts is pretty klunky and could use a face lift.
  • The application monitor portion is a little more challenging to get setup. To the point that we don't use it very much.
Solarwinds Server & Application Monitor is well suited for medium-sized organizations that want a good Server Monitoring tool. It also can be utilized as a tool for tracking other network nodes and devices. It does a good job of keeping track of beats, and uptime, as well as gauging performance and capacity planning.

Easy to use product at a reasonable price!!

We use SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) to monitor and support three airports' IT systems. Our operations team uses it to help with system and application availability. SAM keeps track of the physical status of our servers and watches the network traffic generated by the applications running on them. It allows us to know in real time if we have any issues with Windows itself, hardware, services running under Windows, and applications themselves. We can then take steps to solve issues before it becomes a more serious issue.
  • A wide variety of applications and OSs supported.
  • Easy to use interface that is web-based.
  • Large built-in scripting library and the ability to import scripts.
  • Added monitoring abilities for SQL, Exchange, and IIS.
Cons
  • The product is a resource hog. The CPU, RAM, and database bloat need to be improved.
  • Not a ton of support for Linux.
  • This product requires NPM as well to give you full insight into a machine and its performance.
  • Canned reports are not great, you will need to customize to get what you want/need.
We wanted to be able to monitor all systems and applications from a single source using a solution that was easy to maintain and manage for all users. Since implementing SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM), we have added onto it with the suite of SolarWinds products that have enhanced the monitoring of our network and provided more insight into issues. As well as help us discover issues before they impact our end-users. Our uptime is better than our previous solutions due to the fact that SAM can monitor applications and provide historical data to make alerting decisions.

SolarWinds brings our uptime up by allowing fewer people to monitor applications and servers in a single application with a great notification system. Previously, I had been using a variety of programs that this new one suite can do. It is easy to use. In addition, the option to prioritize notifications allows for better and more accurate resource allocations.
  • Ease of use, simple and easy to set-up and issue.
  • Priced right for our organization.
Cons
  • Having so many modules, can take some doing to understand what you need or want.
  • Additional mobile app/device monitoring.
If you have a wide variety of systems, and perhaps some rarely used or interacted systems, this is a great tool for monitoring servers and applications. In addition, if your staff is small, can greatly empower those that you have to keep an eye on more. Easy to use and train to newer staff. Notifications are easy to set-up and modify.

SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor is being used effectively in our organization to monitor applications, databases, processes, services, etc. We are having multiple instances across the globe with separate instances being procured in each region. We are ble to manage and monitor entire customer applications, servers, etc. in an easy way.

  • Easy to create templates.
  • Easy to deploy templates.
  • Easy to manage templates.
  • It covers lot of things for monitoring server and application level parameters.
Cons
  • As I have experienced while monitoring processes, it should give the exact process name while selecting for Linux/Unix related systems.
  • Oracle database monitoring requires lot of work to do.
  • Oracle database monitoring requires permissions for a lot of other views or tables, which we have to mention explicitly for component monitors. But the documentation mentions the views, which varies from views for component monitors.
It's easy to use and navigate and provides a lot of features to monitor servers and applications. It covers a lot of customer needs and can do a lot of customization using the scripting option provided in the SolarWinds SAM module.
