SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

I knew that capability existed. I never really leveraged it though. My environment doesn't really change all that often, and we're small enough that we don't often have too many cooks in the kitchen. Therefore, changes to our virtual environment are pretty limited in not only frequency but to who is actually allowed to make such changes. I never really explored the "what-if" scenarios provided by VMAN. Never really thought I'd need it, so I guess we never really explored how to get any value out of that feature.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

We can see if there is a high CPU issue with network devices.
The graphs are pretty detailed and we have increased some links from 1Gig to 10Gig with the help of SolarWinds.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

Some of the tools on the storage front were critical in how much time we had left on our storage. It really helped determine when it was time. Moving the monitoring from one storage system to another was easy. Excellent Value.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

Capacity planning is always an exercise in over-estimating growth, fighting with finance to fund your wild estimates, and then having to "settle" for something closer to budget with the hopes that you'll be able to make it. VMAN watches your environment, measure how your specific environment operates, and then allows you to enter your OS requirements and/or expand your hosts to see what new VMs you can support.

Stop defending your decisions with your gut and experience. Use data-driven decisions to get the hardware you need.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

We have used capacity planning scenarios against several of our production hosts to gauge how long the current resource will last. We have some expansions coming up in our production environment and VMAN has been fantastic in giving us an insight into just how much of a resource will be needed based on the current configuration and inventory.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

Capacity planner has been a very useful tool to estimate growth and budget. For instance, when we knew about upcoming projects and estimated the number and size of VMs required, we use this info as an input to the capacity planner. The output was the upgrades in terms of memory, processing and storage required. What-if scenarios are used and the outputs are used by technical team and management to make the best decision on the what projects to select, what projects to drop and what budget is required for VM infrastructure upgrades.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

Part of VMAN's powerful capacity planning is the ability to simulate how your current estate will cope with projected load. Using the capacity reports, you can see how many additional hosts (with similar specifications to hosts already monitored) you will need to cope with your projected increased guest population.

As all the metrics used by capacity planning are real ones gathered from your own estate, the reports are accurate, allowing you to commit to further CAPEX on additional hardware with confidence.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

This is a very important tool as its helps in areas where expensive SAN storage is capitalized for the virtual environment. Its saves processor and ram over utilization and has helped us expand the life of the hardware between refresh. We will continue to leverage it as we plan our virtual roll-outs in the future.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

This is a nice feature to have but in our environment it doesn't really come into play. Usually we have done our own capacity planning and base that on historical data from Solarwinds itself. We have a lot of these notifications disabled because it tends to just become noise.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

In the planning of the migration between some of our VMware environments and Hypervisor environments the capacity prediction was a great help in sizing the newer environments. We also use the capacity planning to look at areas of potential resource constraints in the near future and further out.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

We have been able to use the Predict the capacity needed in the future by looking into the estimated growth. combining this feature and the recommendations we were able to push out the purchase of new hosts by another year. It is also helping us decide what we need to purchase for new hosts as far as performance and capacity needs.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

Capacity prediction allows us see how far we can push our current infrastructure. This allows us to plan out future deployments and verify current infrastructure. Allows hard data rather than gut feelings. When spending the amounts of time and money that working with virtualization requires the financial side of the business wants justification.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Capacity

This is one of our biggest benefits with large projects constantly requiring bigger and bigger capacity requirements, we can quickly respond to provisioning extra resources in house and charge for further expansion where required.
