What is SonicWall TZ?

SonicWall TZ is a Unified Threat Management solution. It provides the core firewall services for small to mid-sized businesses, including anti-malware, anti-spyware, intrusion prevention, and firewall-native traffic decryption. It also supports deep-packet inspection at high traffic loads, network segmentation, and load-balancing, as well as granular traffic reporting for some performance monitoring capabilities.

The SonicWall TZ series of firewalls is designed specifically for the needs of SMBs and branch locations, aiming to deliver enterprise-class security without the complexity. With Zero-Touch Deployment and simplified centralized management, installation and operation is designed to be easy. The firewall is used to detect sophisticated threats, including encrypted attacks, with advanced networking and security features, like the multi-engine Capture Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) cloud-based sandbox service with patent-pending Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection (RTDMIâ„¢). With optional features like PoE/PoE+ support and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, users can create a unified security solution for wired and wireless networks.

The Sonicwall TZ300 Series is a next-generation firewalls that works very well in my company. We bought it for a branch. This firewall integrates the traditional firewall, IPS, Application Control, Web Filtering, anti-virus, and VPN. I also really like the management of this equipment. It was easy to install and configure all the features mentioned.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
I have numerous clients with SonicWall TZ firewalls. I have set them up from scratch and maintained them for years. They are an industry leader for business-grade firewall appliances with numerous security features to protect companies and their networks.
Pros
  • Very good security features including hardware-level AntiVirus and Intrusion Prevention.
  • Customizable firewall rules and NAT policies that will match any network's needs.
  • GEO-Locational filtering helps close off unnecessary countries from seeing the company network.
Cons
  • Have not had a significant change in code for several years. Features are somewhat stagnant.
  • Global monitoring and management system is not as efficient as competitors.
  • Firmware upgrades can sometimes go awry and brick boxes requiring on-site intervention.
Likelihood to Recommend
SonicWall appliances have numerous models for the size and thought of a company and its needs. It is one of the industry leaders and often comes down to what an MSP prefers to use. Barracuda NG and WatchGuard are direct competitors.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
I recently used SonicWALL TZ firewalls for small to medium businesses for UTM (Unified Threat Management) protection and easy to create site to site VPN tunnels. The SonicOS is a very easy to use firewall platform that makes setting up and using the product very efficient and quick. One of the best features of the SonicWALL TZ firewalls is the built in debugging such as running packet captures from the GUI and opening them right up to Wireshark.
Pros
  • Easy to use.
  • Fast setup wizards.
  • Low cost compared to other models/vendors in same range.
Cons
  • Some of the security features may be lacking such as content filter.
  • Way too many licenses needed for features.
Likelihood to Recommend
SonicWall TZ is well suited for the small to medium business market and branch offices where quick setup and easy management are needed. It would not be so well suited for a large office or an office that wanted robust security features.

We have deployed Sonicwall TZ devices in our branch offices. These devices are relatively simple (for a business firewall) to set up and the configuration can be used as a template to quickly deploy on devices in other sites. They also have a great graphical interface, in particular the dashboard for overview monitoring which means overall we have firewalls which do not take up excessive staff resources to set up and maintain.

  • Centralised management
  • Great Graphical user interface
  • Reporting and Analytics
Cons
  • VPN's issues can be a little difficult to pinpoint for the intermediate user. The previous generation software had a GUI for VPN's but this seems to have disappeared in G7?
  • Configuring logging can be difficult when troubleshooting. Get help from support on this if in doubt, it will save you a lot of time!
Likelihood to Recommend
The Sonicwall TZ is a great choice for SME's and small branch offices, you can get up and running relatively quickly on these with a standard configuration or for those wanting to fine tune it is easy to find your way around with the way the interface is split into different sections and headers.

SonicWall TZ allows us to easily tie all of our locations together and to allow our users to easily connect to our on-prem resources over a secure connection. Further, SonicWall TZ gives us a full suite of protections from bad actors out on the internet that is updated regularly and that we can trust will prevent a breach and compliment out other security products.

  • Reliable VPN solutions
Cons
  • Renewal costs are on the high side
  • Support can be slow to respond
  • Lower performance than some other brands for the price
  • Lack of reboot persistent logs

SonicWall TZ OS is very easy to jump into with minimal previous experience compared to other brands. The interface is intuitive and all of the settings are easy to understand. The Knowledge base articles are comprehensive and easy to follow. There is a large number of these units out there with a great deal of community support.
