Secure, reliable, and fast - SonicWall is the one you can trust!

The SonicWall TZ series is being utilized throughout our entire organization. We have been using it for the past 6 years. Initially, we had the TZ 215 and then did a security upgrade to a TZ 400. It protects our environment from cyber threats/zero-day attacks and provides us with visibility into our network.
  • Protection against cyber threats/zero day attacks.
  • Bandwidth management/application control.
Cons
  • Increased flexibility of logs and enhanced alert functionality required.
The SonicWall TZ series is well suited for small to mid-size organizations and distributed enterprises. It has fantastic scalability and can easily be upgraded to a higher model depending on the organization's size and room for growth. The NSA series is better suited for the larger-size organizations which require more processing power to process the required amount of traffic.

The SonicWall TZ was being used as the main firewall for all the organization. It was used to solve our firewall needs and securing our network.
  • Easy to administrate
  • Outstanding uptime
  • Easy to manage rules
Cons
  • No application based controls
  • User based rules were hard to setup
  • Routing can be complex
I believe it is well suited for small to medium companies where they don't have that many users and need basic firewall functionality. That way some of the controls it is missing will not affect security as much and it will be able to handle everything else well.
  • Neither positive nor negative on ROI
  • Maintenance cost is similar to what we paid for other solutions
  • Easy to administer in house so no need to pay for consultants
SonicWall TZ is a much better product. Easier to administer and use and much more elaborate in its rules. I would choose it over Watchguard any day.

Complete protection for the corporate network.

This is a type of equipment used at the branch where I work as an edge firewall. TZ Series is recommended for small and medium environments, but rich in security features, web content filter, antimalware and application visibility. Another important function that this equipment provides us is VPN access to work in the home office.
  • Visibility and identification of traffic in real time.
  • Web content filter.
  • Anti-malware.
Cons
  • Licenses must be purchased annually.
In our scenario, we use it as an edge firewall, in order to filter, identify and block undue traffic and virtual threats. VPN functionality is very required and functional due to the number of employees working in the home office and this allows access to the organization's intranet. Web content filters also help us to block prohibited and inappropriate web pages.

  • Protection of internal data from the virtual threat.
  • SonicWall brought more security to the organization.
  • Enabled home office through VPN.
I have used the SonicWall TZ 350 for years and I can say that it is an excellent and complete firewall. It is easy to configure and administer because it has a friendly interface. It is safe, it offers several types of security features, VPN, and also protection against malware. Support and warranty also recommended. It's fast and the problem was solved in less than 1 day.

Great performance and protection for the price, and very easy to administer

We have multiple locations and many hybrid workers in our company. SonicWall TZ allows us to easily tie all of our locations together and to allow our users to easily connect to our on-prem resources over a secure connection. Further, SonicWall TZ gives us a full suite of protections from bad actors out on the internet that is updated regularly and that we can trust will prevent a breach and compliment out other security products.
  • Easy to administer and setup
  • Reliable security features
  • Very cost effective business firewall
  • Reliable VPN solutions
Cons
  • Renewal costs are on the high side
  • Support can be slow to respond
  • Lower performance than some other brands for the price
  • Lack of reboot persistent logs
SonicWall TZ OS is very easy to jump into with minimal previous experience compared to other brands. The interface is intuitive and all of the settings are easy to understand. The Knowledge base articles are comprehensive and easy to follow. There is a large number of these units out there with a great deal of community support.

  • Hybrid\Remote work is made easy with the VPN solutions to allow us to hire offsite workers
  • SSL VPN seats are affordable and easy to add to the unit
Very easy to use and setup. The VPN features just work without having to fuss with them. The ability to use IPSEC or SSL VPN types is nice.
SonicWall TZ was a no brainer to choose over FortiGate or pfSense. We had used FortiGate units in the past and, in our experience, the interface is terrible, both on the device and the cloud side. There are constant updates that require you to jump through hoops to upgrade and patch. In my opinion, pfSense was overly complicated to administer. SonicWall TZ is easy to use and isn't fussy, it just works.
No
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
We might have purchased a higher tier instead next time as the performance can be overstated on paper.
Once you get to a competent technician the support experience is better. But I have found that the lower tiers of support are very slow to respond (like 1 email per day) and you typically have to re-explain yourself a couple times before they get it. I have not used Phone support, and that may be a better experience.

I installed a SonicWall TZ as the main firewall for my client, a creative agency. This is their main internet security device within their environment and supports users using VPN, VoIP, and web servers. In addition, there are internal devices including a high capacity and speed file server for large image and video work. They currently have the TZ400 installed.
  • Documentation is clear and to the point.
  • The SonicWall keeps up with all the traffic in and out of the agency.
  • Good licensing options and some free services.
Cons
  • Without documentation, the interface and locations of features and settings can be confusing and not intuitive.
  • Would have liked a rack mount option for lower priced devices.
  • Would have liked to have some visualization options included without licensing fees.
Based on my experience, this is a solid platform for a small to mid sized company, especially when there is someone who has IT experience, or can get outsourced IT help. I would not recommend for someone who is a technology novice. Also, this is a competent device for someone who is looking to add VPN services for remote workers.
  • Adding the VPN to the network, through SonicWall TZ, has allowed remote users to access the files they need remotely, without additional fees or convoluted methods, thus saving quite a bit of time.
  • This device is less expensive than the previous device in terms of licensing.
  • Due to the reputation of the company, this device is less likely to require hardware updates as quickly as competitors, thus saving my client from purchasing new equipment unnecessarily.
Our previous firewall, from Xyzell, couldn't handle the bandwidth that video files needed within the internal LAN, so we looked at alternatives. SonicWall came recommend by a different IT professional for its solid performance and good documentation. We further researched the TZ lineup, and decided on a model that would fit our traffic needs.
In practice, the interface is a bit more difficult to use than Xyzell, but due to Xyzell's lack of documentation, and support of a 2 year old model, SonicWall has been a much more pleasant experience. Performance wise, there is a night and day difference between the two.
Yes
The Sonicwall TZ 400 replaced a Zyxel USG 50 due to bandwith issues on the Zyxel and lack of reliable VPN capabilities. As this client did more work with large files within the organization, video and large design files, the Zyxel firewall was slowing down transfers. In addition, more and more employees were being placed outside of the organization, so a reliable VPN was needed.

The single most important factor for us was the reviews and word of mouth response to the SonicWall products in general, and the TZ line in particular. Price was an issue, but only in a way that put us into a certain class of products, but the SonicWall was the leader from the start due to recommendations.
I would have liked to have had a demo of the software of the SonicWall and other competitor products before we made our choice. This may have swayed us into a different product, if the user interface was easier to use and more intuitive. But, since we chose this option, we are satisfied with the interface and how to use the product.
