Splunk RUM helps in identifying the pattern and behaviour of the end-user when he is interacting with your application. It helps in identifying what services are most frequently and least browsed by end-user. Also, it helps in identifying bottlenecks in case services are slow or end-user interaction is taking too much time capturing their response time, and errors (if any).
  • Identifying brute attacks.
  • Helps in identifying end user behaviour.
  • Capturing pages which have slow response time.
  • No live stream of data.
  • Splunk is entirely dependent on logs which means no logs then you can't perform a Splunk query.
  • Splunk RUM needs to be a bit simplified in terms of user interaction.
Splunk RUM was really helpful in identifying brute force attacks as we used Splunk query language and were able to identify how many failed login attempts were made from which country and blacklisted those IP's. Since Splunk entirely depends on Splunk query language, if there are no logs or you delete the logs you can't perform analysis, as there is no stream of live data and also it depends on how frequently your data can be indexed.
  • Capture metrics related to client side performance.
  • Http errors ranging from 4xx-5xx.
  • Response time, stability of page.
  • Splunk is a single platform to perform all your analysis from front end to backend and all services.
  • Splunk licensing is quite costly.
  • Splunk is an excellent tool for data engineering and cyber security purpose.
We are having other monitoring tools like AppDynamics, Dynatrace, Datadog and already using their end-user monitoring capability. Most of our customers are looking for agent-free monitoring where they don't want to instrument any agent on their client-side (as it might interfere with application functionality) and still want to capture important metrics. I guess in that case Splunk RUM comes into the picture picking up those important metrics without instrumenting any agent.

We use Splunk Real User Monitoring (RUM) to debug any issues in an application end to end. This includes issues that could occur in the frontend or in the backend or debugging logs in general. It also has a cool user interface, and the artificial intelligence engine is a nice touch as well.
  • Artificial Intelligence engine
  • End to end visibility
  • Good User Interface
  • Performance improvement in case of multiple filters
  • Less storage
  • Better pricing
Scenarios where Splunk Real User Monitoring is well suited:
- End-to-end debugging of an application deployed to production.
- Artificial intelligence suggestions based on log data.
- Good user interface.

Scenarios where Splunk Real User Monitoring is less appropriate:
- Where storage available is less.
- Where multiple filters need to be applied at the same time.
  • End to end visibility
  • User interface
  • Log storage
  • Increased developer productivity
  • Better on-call debugging
  • Confidence in deploying to production
Splunk Real User Monitoring (RUM) has a much better artificial intelligence engine. It also has a much better and more intuitive user interface. Splunk RUM also allows end-to-end visibility into the front and the backend. Technical support and customer service are also much better than Goliath. Query performance is faster than Goliath.

We are using this product to get move visibility of our user's issues and measure user experience of server-side applications. It helps us to reduce MTTR and better visibility of user activity per session helps us to have a proactive approach with a better service-oriented approach. Many out-of-the-box integrations also made our life easier for implementation.
  • Easily to find errors and fix them
  • Detailed inspection of user's data
  • Great dashboards that provides important insights
  • the analytics side of product can be better
  • Cost model to be company friendly
  • Product Documentation can be better
This product provides us solutions for a need for security operations, automated response, as well as mapping adjusting of security components. It provides us good SIEM fundamental platform. We are also using Splunk for information assurance, system alerting, and compliance aspects of IT area. Its integration with 3rd parties have good benefits for initial phase.
  • SIEM Platform
  • Log Analyzer
  • Users actions monitor
  • Alerting and Orchestration of responses
  • Preventing User's downtime
  • Stable environment
  • Security increased
Elasticsearch is an open-source app with all that it's mean. It's a great competitor yet it will require us many man-hours to create a solution that will provide similar to what Splunk already has out of the box. Therefore we preferred to have Splunk as our product in order to increase time to market for SIEM solutions.

In our environment, Splunk RUM is used to reduce the troubleshooting time during Major Incident Management. It gives us End-to-End visibility of what is happening inside the application thus helping to locate the issue faster in times of need. The tool helps us to take proactive measures to improve the customer-facing application with the help of the user activity report and its various feature.
  • Correlation of issue for Complex application.
  • Easy to adopt user experience setup and interactive reporting.
  • Error handling and performing automated workflow based on the known error.
  • The setting baseline for AI-driven troubleshooting requires more documentation to implement.
  • Room for integration with open sourced or inhouse monitoring tools.
  • Required more flexibility on setting up mobile OS performance metrics.
RUM is best suited to monitor the application where performance is the key indicator. It is useful when it comes to getting real-time updates on what the customer is facing while using a web-based application. Also, figure out the issue and capture it in a report to showcase and work on. We are still exploring the features of how Splunk RUM can be leveraged so that the mobile experience can also be stored and related to web applications.
  • Complete User-Activity Capture.
  • Eliminate Customer-Facing Issues.
  • End-to-End Visibility.
  • MTTR reduced.
  • Integration with different tool made the collaboration faster.
  • Troubleshooting time cut down and more focus on the problem-solution has been achieved.
Splunk is more lightweight and affordable in terms of managing small or mid-sized environments. Setup is fast and deployment time is quick. The OOB feature also makes it start using right away. Different integration options are also API-based and room for development is enormous. The dashboards are query-based and response time is quick.
