CloudCheckr is a powerful tool that has proven invaluable for AWS users in managing cost and resources across multiple client accounts. With CloudCheckr, users have the ability to customize rates and discounts for their customers and generate detailed reports, providing transparency and control over costs. The software also offers insights into AWS resources, enabling users to optimize both cost and performance.

One of the key use cases of CloudCheckr is its assistance in determining which reserved instances to purchase. By analyzing historical data and usage patterns, the tool provides recommendations on the most cost-effective reserved instances, saving users significant time and money. Moreover, CloudCheckr's modules align with industry best practices, resulting in immediate savings for users who implement the recommended strategies.

In addition to cost management, CloudCheckr excels in monitoring AWS environments for inventory, utilization, and security. Users heavily rely on the alerts and reports provided by CloudCheckr to catch misconfigurations and identify any unusual cost usages on a daily basis. This not only helps in maintaining security but also ensures compliance with best practices for data handling.

With its multi-account view feature, CloudCheckr offers a centralized and comprehensive overview of an organization's AWS estate. This allows users to easily manage multiple client accounts from a single interface, streamlining their operations and improving efficiency. Overall, CloudCheckr provides peace of mind by monitoring for data exposure and ensuring correct data handling while offering valuable insights and recommendations for better decision-making.

Convenient Alerts: The convenience of CloudCheckr alerts has been highlighted by users. This feature allows customers to set up notifications for cost or security events without the need for coding. It helps users stay informed about any deviations from normal usage, enabling them to take proactive measures to control and optimize their cloud expenses.

Frequent Functionality Breaks: Many users have frequently encountered unexpected breaks in functionality while using CloudCheckr. These sudden disruptions can occur without warning, causing frustration and inconvenience for users who rely on the platform for their daily operations. Such frequent incidents negatively impact the overall user experience, as they disrupt workflows and require additional time and effort to resolve.

Delayed Support Tickets: Users have expressed dissatisfaction with the support ticket system provided by CloudCheckr. Reviewers often experience delays in getting their application issues addressed, which further exacerbates their frustrations. The prolonged response times hinder problem resolution and contribute to user dissatisfaction with the support services offered.

Crashes and Performance Issues: The stability of both the CloudCheckr platform itself and its accompanying documentation website has been a concern raised by multiple users. They report frequent crashes and instances of performance degradation that impede their ability to access important information and resources. This recurring issue creates obstacles for users seeking timely insights or assistance, resulting in reduced productivity and heightened frustration levels.

We use CloudCheckr to monitor our AWS environments for cost, inventory, utilization, and security. It addresses the monitoring of configuration in AWS and provides recommendations for cost savings, security best practices, and where we can make better decisions around our usage. We use the alerts and reports to feed our centralized monitoring and reporting system to catch misconfigurations and unusual cost usage on a daily basis. With things like S3 buckets being the number one data breach vector in AWS, it is great to have a piece of mind that something is watching to make sure we don’t expose data incorrectly. It also provides a multi-account view which is great for that single pane of glass view of the estate.
  • Monitor costs and provide alerts when they deviate from normal usage.
  • Provide security best practices and alert on misconfigurations.
  • Monitor utilisation and recommend more appropriate instance sizes and reserved instance purchases.
  • Provide a single pane of glass view for multiple accounts in AWS.
  • There are so many options that you can feel a little lost at the time, but training, documentation and a great support team are on hand.
  • Would like to be able to do detailed training and certification, but I understand this may be on the way.
  • Provide more real-time monitoring.
CloudCheckr is fantastic for those that are purely in the Cloud as it provides everything you need under one roof for a comprehensive configuration and usage monitoring tool. It has SysLog capabilities though so you can farm out the alerts into a SIEM or other log management system, so hybrid environments could also benefit from its use.

  • Faster identification of configuration issues.
  • Alerting to unusual cost behavior.
  • Promoting better security configuration.
  • Cost savings.
Overall, CloudCheckr covers all our AWS monitoring needs and great integration through SysLog into our SIEM to capture alerts for investigation. The reports are great and allow for an easy daily review. Small improvements could be made to the interface and better filtering in places would be good. Great product and the price is fair.
Fantastic Support team who are responsive and address question and concerns promptly with a thorough explanation and fast resolution.
We compared with Cloud Conformity and Staxx. They are all great products and have their pros and cons and we just felt for the price that CoudCheckr had everything we needed and seemed a bit more mature in the market. We review our position every year and can see that the other products are closing the gap as well.

We host our SaaS platform on AWS, and it has grown rather large over the years. We originally got CloudCheckr just so we could figure out what reserved instances we ought to purchase. Getting this detail figured out without having to spend a day or more doing it manually already saved us more than the cost of CloudCheckr. As we got other details aligned with their recommended best practices, we purchased their other modules, again seeing immediate savings. AWS can be large and complex, and having the right tools is critical to managing it all without losing your mind.
  • Detailed Best Practices. It's important to align your cloud to industry best practices for security and cost—it just performs better if it's used the way it's meant to be used. AWS is very flexible, and that's great when you have special requirements, but you've got to at least know when you're using something in a non-standard way so you can think through the implications.
  • Cost Reduction. Some recommendations are almost impossible to make at least for our setup, but many, many others are easy. We only have to log into CloudCheckr every few months and make a few changes for it to more than pay for itself.
  • Right-Sizing. This is related to the other points, but for some reason is separate from their cost module. The metrics it's able to pull only tell half the story, so it's good to verify it's sizing recommendations before making changes. But it does show you what instances to focus on first, and even if you choose a slightly different size to move it to, it does clearly indicate it's current size isn't appropriate. And this works both ways, if the size is too big, you can save some cash by making it smaller, but if it's too small, you want to be sure to scale up before you run into performance problems.
  • UI can be difficult to navigate. Given the amount of data, it's not surprising, but I often launch the different reports in multiple tabs so I don't get lost.
  • Can be expensive. Not in our case, but you probably want to check and make sure you'll see significant cost savings that'll pay for the product as we did.
If you want to control the cost of your cloud infrastructure and adhere to the industry's security best practices, this is the best I've found. If you want to right-size your instances, this can provide a place to start, but there are other tools like https://www.metricly.com/ that might be better suited. For us, this was enough, and we couldn't justify the additional expense of another tool. But it's primary purpose is to control costs.
  • Huge return. For us, the cost was the only real motivator, the other benefits of CloudCheckr were just side benefits. We didn't see a huge percentage of savings, but several thousand dollars per month is a huge help for anyone!
  • Security is hard to put a dollar amount on, unless you have a breach. We were pretty comfortable with what we had, but it's still good to have this double check. If we didn't have other tools, I would say this could be a good place to start.
There are a few products out there that'll do an aspect or two of what CloudCheckr does, but I honestly couldn't find anything nearly as comprehensive as CloudCheckr.

We are using CloudCheckr to support Amazon Web Services cost and resource management for hundreds of client accounts. CloudCheckr allows us to have control over custom rate and discount application for those customers as well as generate custom reporting. CloudCheckr also allows customers to gain insights into their AWS resources and view recommendations for optimizing the cost and performance of their environments.
  • CloudCheckr best practice reports aggregate a decade of industry cloud computing lessons learned and apply them to a customer's environment so that they can secure and optimize their infrastructure.
  • CloudCheckr custom reports allow for custom invoicing capabilities for a reseller as well as tailored reporting for a customer. Being able to host both in the same platform means that customers can align their invoices with the billing information at their fingertips.
  • CloudCheckr alerts allow a customer to set up notifications for cost or security events without writing any code.
  • CloudCheckr features have a tendency to break without warning. Functionality in place for months could suddenly stop working.
  • CloudCheckr support often delays work on support tickets for fixing broken application functionality.
  • The CloudCheckr platform and documentation website often crash or experience performance degradation.
  • CloudCheckr cost reporting is often impacted by faulty code or broken report functionality. This can contribute to a low level of confidence in CloudCheckr's ability to deliver accurate cost reporting.
CloudCheckr is well-suited for all scenarios if it works properly. However, I have experienced a steady stream of critical issues that impact the abilities of my customers and my team to leverage the platform. When the platform is working properly, the reports give layers of visibility into an organization's cloud costs and structure, and the functionality meet business and security needs while offloading the effort to build and maintain such monitors and automated notifications.
  • CloudCheckr has allowed us to increase resell margins as an MSP.
  • CloudCheckr has made us aware of cost savings opportunities that exceed the price of the platform itself.
  • CloudCheckr has given us additional visibility that has allowed us to manage and understand cloud computing costs.
Cloudability boasts great visualizations but lacks the ability to customize reports and does not address any aspects of cloud management other than cost. CloudHealth is a viable competitor to CloudCheckr. CloudHealth does not have the breadth of reporting capabilities but provides the depth into what it supports and is consistently adding support for more. CloudHealth also appears to perform better and have better uptime than CloudCheckr.
