SQL Dev is used for all of our Oracle databases for analytics. We've chosen SQL Dev as a reliable product, and will continue to use it indefinitely.
  • Ease of use.
  • It's designed with human factors in mind.
  • Continuous improvement.
  • More color scheme options.
  • Query development help.
  • It could use more specific query errors than the generic Oracle codes.
SQL dev is great for new users. I've also used SQL Nav and Toad in the past, and SQL dev is a strong competitor.

Our database administration team is using Oracle SQL Developer for the sake of increased productivity. Instead of writing SQL queries out, they use Oracle SQL Developer's IDE interface to quickly create complex queries. Some other features we use include browsing/managing data, ad-hoc reporting, migrating 3rd party RDBMS systems over to Oracle, and data modeling.
  • Flexible GUI. The UI updates of the latest version have made navigating through the various features of Oracle SQL Developer quite easy.
  • Great Tools for Testing and Developing SQL Scripts. SQL scripting can be a hassle when working with large tables and such. Oracle SQL Developer makes it easy to preview how many rows and tables will be affected.
  • Ability to Load Data from Different File Formats. Some of our data comes in the form of Excel spreadsheets, XML, and JSON. Oracle SQL Developer allows our database administrators to easily push the data from these formats into our database tables automatically.
  • Inability to run multiple queries on the same database. You can only run one query on a given database.
  • Analytical models created from complex tables isn't accurate, and needs work.
  • Inability to view multiple tables of a database side-by-side. When trying to find correlations between tables, it would help to be able to see them at once on the same page.
Oracle SQL Developer is well-suited for all companies that are using Oracle SQL Databases. First and foremost, it is absolutely free, and there are many free in-depth tutorials and documentation online to answer all of your questions. No matter the amount of experience, I am sure all database administrators will be able to work much more productively with their organization's databases through this IDE.

We use Oracle SQL Developer to extract, create database objects such as views, stored procedures, packages, etc and to also report out info. We use it in the IT department. I find it to be a generally good tool.
  • Run queries
  • Export Data
  • When displaying errors it locates the error on the exact line and position.
  • I would like to drag and drop from and to any of the areas.
  • I would like to have more capabilities to export.
  • Have help info handy when I have a doubt with extensive help.
Oracle SQL developer is well suited to run quick reports or to extract quick info and create or change objects, but I would think is less appropriate when using it everyday to report when another tool should be used.

SQL Developer is used at Duquesne Light Company to query our Oracle Utility Suite databases (CCB, MDM, MWM). We use it for standard selects, DDL and DML. It is being used across multiple departments in both IT and non-IT disciplines. It is also used to build reports. It addresses the need for a simple user-friendly database connection and querying tool for those who know how to write SQL and need information from the OUS databases.
  • User-friendly.
  • Easy to install.
  • Allows users to write PL/SQL.
  • You can't run more than one query against the same database at one time. This is a capability for TOAD.
  • Sometimes it doesn't allow you to use parallel threads in query execution and the error message isn't very descriptive or explain why.
  • Editing your display preferences could be a little easier. I had to watch several YouTube videos before I was able to figure out where those settings are kept.
SQL Developer is well-suited for low to medium volume select, update, insert, and delete queries where the number of records touched is <1,000,000 records. SQL Developer is less suited for real PL/SQL development. Our software engineers use other tools to write and compile larger PL/SQL packages. It isn't a bad thing but it's something that could be looked into.

Oracle SQL Developer is used by developers in Stanford for retrieving data for reporting purposes. I take the necessary data and use Excel or report tools to create reports for management. We also use the application to create quality control scripts for the application that we support for our users.
  • It's easy to navigate among the dashboard.
  • It's easy to find errors when debugging.
  • It's easy to run SQL scripts.
  • To more easily go back to the dashboard that I had set up before.
  • Finding tables and Views more easily.
  • Finding certain columns and which tables or views have these.
If you need to pull quick data, you can save the data and have it open in Excel.

This product is being used across our entire company. It allows us to interact with our databases to review and correct data.
  • Easy to use.
  • Beginner and power user-friendly.
  • I wish that you could view multiple tables in the same database at the same time.
  • I wish that you could easily open multiple databases at the same time in the same instance.
  • I often misclick when opening a database, so it would be nice to either launch it faster or not immediately open (or at least have the option to enable a soft validation).
It works well for visually examining/altering a database. It fails at multitasking in databases.

Oracle SQL Developer is being used by our development team to provide introspection to the performance of our production baseline. Additionally, it's used during development to pilot capabilities, integrations and for rapid proof of concept implementation.
  • Seamless database management integration
  • Process stack analysis
  • Modeling and visualizations
  • Setup can be challenging if your schemas aren't well formed or managed. Also, the ability to model/develop extensions for an existing database solution will depend on how robust the DBA provisioned roles and designed the respective schemas.
  • Detailed analysis of models can be clunky for complex relational models.
You can utilize Oracle SQL Developer for package analysis, prototyping, troubleshooting for all phases of the SDLC.

Oracle SQL Developer is the choice of product to write pl/sql code and is easy to connect to multiple databases. This is a tool which allows to connection to Oracle products as well and hence why it is useful when you need one glass pane for all your tools.
  • Oracle SQL Developer is one glass pane to look for all connections across all databases.
  • This can work across various environments and provides good value for money.
  • This is developer oriented and maintains great connection pool to databases.
  • Not easy to install - our IT and compliance policies made it hard to get this installed.
  • If there are security policies across companies, it is not easy to work way out to get product installed. The product is good, but the way it is delivered is not the best.
  • This product need better UI to search data across various panes.
Oracle SQL Developer allows one pane of glass to make it valuable, and saves times while working on various other products of Oracle and other software. Oracle SQL Developer is good for any type of company, big or small, that needs it for development. The catch is, the way people are using it needs to be monitored. This is because it is a single product that connects to production and non-production, it is easy to make a mistake and push to the wrong instance.

Oracle SQL Developer is used by my department. It is used for writing and testing SQL scripts, for debugging as well. It is also used to mostly access the data used for data analytics.
  • Easy to install.
  • Good for debugging SQL scripts.
  • Exporting to Excel.
Oracle SQL Developer should be used for extracting data from a database and importing into a data analytics tool.

Oracle developer is our main development tool for PL/SQL and database management. It is being used by our department and across the company. It simplifies the development and management of our various databases and data warehouses.
  • Presentation of objects contained in the database
  • Autocomplete of SQL code
  • Running multiple statements at the same time
  • Importing and exporting data to the cloud from on-prem
  • Code versioning
  • Prettier and smoother UI graphics
It's well suited for all things database related.

To develop SQL Code and design database objects along with data migration across the whole organization. It allows us to import and export data to other data platforms. And we can generate quick DDL and review the tables/views and contents effectively. Since we are new to the tool and trying to migrate our data to the cloud, it would be helpful if the data export feature to the cloud could be improved.
  • It lets us create new objects easily and modify the DDL within the tool quite easily.
  • I love the data review tab that shows the data quickly and helps us profile the data.
  • Exporting data from one object to another is great.
  • Import/export data to the cloud.
  • Does not do a good job of auto-connecting to a previous connection and you have to go through a couple of clicks and refresh.
It is well suited to develop new SQL code and create new objects.

Oracle SQL Developer is our default querying IDE for our analytics zone and a primary way for us to access all the data we store across various programs.
  • Easy to connect to a data source - Time to get started is fairly easy given the connection is straightforward.
  • It's very barebones, there are so many greater options for querying that provide more dynamic interaction and autocompletion.
  • Visually, it leaves much to be desired, sometimes it even clips the text on my widescreen monitor.
Oracle SQL Developer is well suited for a quick-use scenario where you're not planning to be in it a lot. It's fairly easy out of the box to begin querying.

SQL Developer is used by some of the programmers and database administrators. We use it for data fixes in Oracle databases along with processes in PL/SQL to update a lot of data. It works well to do complex or simple data updates and is easy to pick up for new programmers.
  • Easy to use UI.
  • Fairly quick software with right Java versions, etc.
  • Formatting feature is good.
  • Explain plan feature is great.
  • Canceling queries (at least in older versions) didn't actually cancel queries; it still had to do the entire query then rollback.
  • Out of sync versions of java make SQL Developer run terribly, I've had this happen on a virtual machine and I no longer use it there.
  • Setting defaults for login/etc. With files isn't so simple even for newer versions.
SQL Developer is well suited for day to day work with data updates. This could be for updating large amounts of data or small fixes. It is also good for new hires or new programmers who may not be used to SQL since it's fairly easy to pick up. For ETL processing or data scientist work I think SQL Developer is less appropriate as it doesn't provide as many features as those users need or like.

It is being used throughout the organization to connect to Oracle Databases that are on premise. It creates an easy way to connect to an Oracle Database without having to install an Oracle client. It is nice to use in inserting data elements into tables from an Excel spreadsheet rather than having to write insert statements. The user interface is nice for SQL query writing and drilling into table structures where you can see the indexes, data columns, the script that makes a view, etc.
  • Export SQL results to a spreadsheet. After a query is run, you are able to export the results to a spreadsheet
  • Easily preview data columns on an Oracle table or view and the metadata on those columns.
  • SQL Editor is color-coded so that you can tell easily what are keywords.
  • You can set up SQL code templates to be able to use shortcut keys to format your SQL query easily in a readable format that you prefer.
  • Memory sorting feature would be great, which SQL developer doesn't have. Basically, after you get results from your query the memory sort feature caches your results into memory and then you are able to sort your columns/filter data results without having to rerun your query.
  • Easily be able to make your SQL editor screen zoomed in or zoomed out when showing your code in SQL developer with an easy hotkey rather than having to go into the SQL editor properties to change the font size.
  • It would be nice to be able to view schemas, views, tables, and sequences easier. Maybe some kind of dropdown that could help navigate these options when there is a connection to the database.
It is fairly simple to use for new users or beginners in their SQL knowledge. It is easy to install and use to connect quickly to an Oracle Database. Great options for formatting your SQL code. I appreciate the reserved words being in a different color. It is hard to dig into your data with sorts and filters easily without having to rerun the SQL query. Sometimes this is painful when you have a long running query that you want to sort or filter and it then reruns the long-running query to make that happen

Oracle's SQL Developer is used throughout the IT department at my company. It is extremely useful for querying our various databases. It is used for researching, troubleshooting, fixing (insert, update, delete), etc. It is a very powerful tool and is critical to our IT department's daily functionality. I have personally been using SQL Developer since it was first released in approximately 2006-2007.
  • SQL Developer aids in writing queries in several ways, such as syntax highlighting, code formatting, auto-complete suggestions, error displays, and much more.
  • You can easily export your results into a variety of formats such as Excel, CSV, Insert statements, etc.
  • The product allows you to store your database connections so you only need to select from a drop-down which database (or which user account) you want to use to execute a query or script.
  • You can view all database objects under specific schemas or user accounts and drill down to the most granular details.
  • There are a fair number of bugs that are identified in the product regularly, but Oracle generally releases updates several times per year to address issues and introduce new features.
  • Although you can collapse certain sections of code, it is not always reliable and sometimes auto-expands.
  • Some settings are not retained from session to session. For example, I like specific columns to be expanded in my results so I can see the entire value.
SQL developer is very well suited for developers and anyone who has a basic understanding of the SQL language to interact with a database. Even with very limited knowledge, you can benefit from this product since it can help you along if needed. There are even some built-in reports which can be run for common tasks or to be used as a template for new queries you may need to create.
On the flip side, I would not recommend this tool for business users with no experience with SQL. SQL Developer is much more user-friendly and powerful than the old-school SQL*Plus, but you still need to have some basic understanding of how to work with databases.

My team and I use SQL Developer to develop and test database queries implemented in and for our various end-user reports. SQL Developer is used by other teams throughout the organization for various other purposes. By using SQL Developer, I am able to quickly and easily write, execute and debug queries. I am also able to generate and explain plans to help me evaluate and tune queries for the greatest performance.
  • Highlights syntax assisting in the proper development and completion of statements.
  • Allows toggling of breakpoints for SQL debugging. By using these breakpoints, I can evaluate variable values real-time as the query executes.
  • Highlights syntax errors and upon hover, displays proper syntax with a direct link to the appropriate documentation for the statement in question.
  • It would be helpful if one could quickly and easily integrate another editor into this tool. Although the provided editor is quite useful, other 3rd-party editors are much more powerful.
  • SQL Developer should be able to easily integrate with source control providers other than GIT and Subversion.
  • The syntactical auto-completion should allow some keystroke to complete and suggested statement rather than requiring a mouse-click to accept the suggestion.
SQL Developer is well-suited for querying large data sets. Its performance is very good and it limits the returned result-sets to prevent the return of massive datasets in an interactive environment.

SQL Developer is less appropriate for end users querying database tables. The interface is designed more towards developers and less towards end users.

We as a group of developers use SQL developer to integrate the queries for our apps and to better understand our database designs.
  • One of the things that SQL Developer is really good at is helping us view and export database structures to see if it needs some design optimization. Sometimes, as a developer I need to check that out.
  • SQL Developer also offers stability in the management of query executions.
  • And, one of the main advatages of SQL Developer over other options is the easy way that let you have multiple connections open, and change between them.
  • I think SQL Developer needs to improve its funcionallity to export data in multiple formats from queries. It will help us generate reports.
  • I do not see SQL Developer as the best tool to perform data migratios, perhaps that is an opportunity of improvement.
SQL Developer is a recommended software in cases like getting track of database objects and designing queries during the process of software development in any platform. For example, we use it when we implement a new Java app and need to be sure that objects and business logic are in line with our database structure.

I think it's a great tool for me as a software developer. However, as a DBA I think it would not be the only software I depend on to perform some data processes, although it can be really useful too.

SQL Developers is used by many developers and DBA across several departments in our company.
  • Comparing with native SQLPLUS, or command line interface, SQL Developer provides a user-friendly interface to communicate with Oracle databases.
  • As a DBA, I especially like the DBA tools which can manipulate AWR, configure Resource Manager, launch SQL Tuning Advisor, etc.
  • Another function people use a lot is to export a table into csv format. SQL Developer makes it very easy.
  • SQL Developer doesn't support MySQL database. We need to use MySQL Workbench. It would great if a single client tool woks for all DBs someday.
  • The explain plan can be shown as a better diagram. For a long sophisticated plan, it is not very easy to read and to catch where the bottleneck is
  • I don't find partition display in SQL Developers
Many developers who are not familiar with dictionary views find SQL Developer a nice GUI to access DB objects. In addition to DBConsole and command lines, DBAs now have one more interface to manage jobs, reports, configurations. SQL Developer is free, which is a great benefit comparing with some other client tools. I use command line most of the time, which I am used to, and it gives nice display of execution plans.

There are business critical platforms running on Oracle databases. SQL developer edition mostly used by reporting and support functions with in the IT organization. This tool is preferred for non-complex database connection and reporting activities.
  • Code snippets
  • Debugger options
  • Explain plans for executions
  • User interface and experience should be improved.
  • Detailed code analysis functions should be implemented.
It depends on the role and requirements of the job. I recommend SQL developer mostly for business analyst and data reporter roles. It has basic query builder features and templates enough to complete day to day tasks.

My department and organization uses Oracle SQL Developer to use and manage Oracle Database 12c a better way. My team uses Oracle SQL developer, as it is a graphical tool which honestly makes it quite easier to not only use and manage Oracle Databases, but also train new junior DBAs to do the same. It's easy to learn and understand.
  • It's free
  • Very useful to organize different Oracle Databases or connections
  • Easy to use, user friendly, and quite intuitive
  • Not useful if you are not using Oracle Database
  • Quite slow even when using Oracle Database, many other faster products like this out there
  • No export feature, like a CSV or Excel format
Oracle SQL Developer is best suited while using Oracle Databases, may it be any versions or any Oracle Databases. But if you try using it with any other databases such as MariaDB or MySQL, it does not work very well, in fact it is quite useless. But I have to say, it is quite easy to use, and install.

SQL Developer is an indispensable tool used primarily for data mining and analysis. We have data in many repositories and using proper drivers we can connect to various back ends and merge data. Most non technical personnel do not have knowledge to perform SQL queries so we find using SQL Developer very useful in this regard. We like that we can also interface with SQL Server. So primarily we use it for data mining and analysis.
  • It easily connects to Oracle DBS.
  • The query optimization tools are easy to use.
  • Getting details about existing objects using scripts. It's portability into different file system like Excel, text etc.
  • It should be better at helping identify errors.
  • It could be better at extricating data.
  • Frequently requiring updates to JDK.
Developing and testing database queries implemented in reports used by end users. Also well suited for debugging queries, though it could be better at identifying specific errors. It's interface is definitely designed more for developers than end users.

It is being used to interact with Oracle databases. I use it to query, update and load tables in Oracle databases. It is very reliable and free. By using it I don't need to look for other database clients. It does not take too long to install it and it's very easy to use.
  • Quickly set up database connections.
  • Good data visualization.
  • Good for more common DBA tasks.
  • Runs on several operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac).
  • Makes upgrades and patching easy.
  • Creating complex reports.
  • Improves on error details.
I think it is well suited when you want to work with many databases from a single interface. I usually set up connections to Dev, Test and Prod databases. It is useful when we need to browse database objects. The environment is also suitable for doing PL/SQL applications development. The tool just simplifies development and management of Oracle databases. Less appropriate for databases other than Oracle.

We use SQL Developer to process various database items into a large scalable database that is used for our ground system.
  • SQL Developer is nicely integrated and provides greater visibility into schemas as well as data.
  • SQL Developer allows easy access to fields view and data view of multiple schemas
  • Allows repository type of view that enables ease of browsing thru tables without extensive use of SQL.
  • SQL Developer is already intuitive, but could be more user friendly by utilizing a UI based design.
  • SQL Developer could use more of an IDE-type look and feel.
  • Addition of more Database admin type functionalities.

It is used across the IT area within the company for db management. My team allows our developers to use this tool to provide technical support for our production applications when issues arise. They can review the data in the system to determine if the issue was in the data or the codebase. It is also used in our testing environments to allow our developers create and update testing data.
  • It connects with Oracle dbs with ease.
  • The query optimization tools are readily available and easy to use.
  • Occasionally the application will freeze when it fails to properly connect to a database.
  • It tends to be a very resources heavy and can freeze when running longer queries, with no way to stop the execution.
  • There is no clean way to change the user's password within the UI.
Well suited for any management of Oracle DBs.

My company is a non-profit based healthcare system consists of hospitals and clinics. We have an electronic health record system that is used by our clinicians and captures and stores clinical data. Our projects are to analyze care providers' utilization of our computer system, to understand user behaviors and patterns. We used SQL developer to develop ETL processes and extract data for analysis.
  • SQL developer is a popular tool and provided free. This means we could find a good analyst and data developer easily since many of them are already familiar with the tool. It is also good to educate our developers and analysts to follow up with new features of the tool.
  • SQL developer runs upon Java. It is easy to install and set up to get started with the first SQL. My organization is in healthcare industry and we don't need "everything in one" tool. Comparing to Toad, SQL developer is light and use less memory, for us, it is a reasonable choice.
  • SQL developer is more specialized in individual developer's use rather than collaborative database development. In our project, individual clinical analysts have their own data mart to run and analyze, which was better fit to do the project with SQL developer.
  • We often used the functionality of exporting data to files, such as Excel cvs or text to be used as a secondary analysis. In case the file size is big it used to fail or even crash the application. And it ended up with failure of the whole export. I wish SQL developer provide a step by step export, or at least show estimate of exported file size in advance.
  • There is little support of code quality management, maintenance, and assessment. Since our data analysts often works in silo environment we need a centralized code management to keep consistency of data, which SQL developer is not good at.
  • Performance is good overall, there are tools for improvement to be used in a professional manner, especially to work for a large data set such as enterprise data warehouse.
In case your company's database is not performance-critical, SQL developer is a reasonable choice. It is freely-downloadable from Oracle website, many data developers and analysts are familiar with, well documented. It was good in my organization since our end-users were domain-specific analysts who have a background in clinical fields but have skills of SQL additionally. In addition, we used the tool for "read-only" mostly to analyze clinical data, so poor code management of SQL developer wasn't a limitation.
