Survey Monkey - An excellent, nimble and cost effective survey option.

SurveyMonkey was used most often as a way to measure employee satisfaction and engagement. It is used across several departments and is a useful survey tool in both sales and marketing departments. At times we used SurveyMonkey to also get a consensus before deploying system wide changes and also as a discovery tool for process improvements across the organization.
  • Its extremely nimble and easy to set up
  • Provides a useful question bank full of sample questions to guide you in your survey
  • Results analysis shows charts for a quick analysis as well as downloading the raw data for creating custom reports
  • Creates numerous collectors in order to track where people are finding your surveys
Cons
  • You cannot use an internal logo across multiple surveys without upgrading.
  • You are limited to the first 100 responses unless purchasing more
  • Limited connectivity: Was unable to connect Survey Monkey to multiple Facebook pages.
In order to know whether SurveyMonkey is good for your organization, you need to discover what the final output will be and how large the survey audience will be. If you are a small department or will be using less than 100 polled users, then the basic product is for you.

"Free" with major catches. Look elsewhere for one-off or occasional use.

Having used SurveyMonkey many years ago, it was my go to tool for a recent survey to members of a not for profit sports club that I captain.
  • Reasonably easy to setup a survey with answers provided using various mechanisms
  • Good reporting on survey results
Cons
  • Deceptive business practices
  • "Free basic" version is promoted on site but details on limitations difficult to find
  • Very expensive and not suitable for the likes of a community sports club wanting to do a one off survey of members.
For small organizations and community not-for profits, I would suggest SurveyMonkey is not at all suitable. It is expensive, and be very careful about investing any of your time in the "free" version which is essentially a trap.

SurveyMonkey may be suited to larger corporations who frequently produce surveys, however there are many other accessible and competing options available these days that make a dedicated survey site like SurveyMonkey far less relevant.

If you are thinking of using the free service, think twice. Using the free version you will find you can create your survey with all sorts of components, but then having invested the time, when you go to publish it you will be met with a payment request for the "premium" features you have used in your form. Once you manage to publish a form with only free features, you will then be solicited for paid enhancements for result analysis. Next you will find that your survey has a limit of 40 responses, and any extra results will be withheld unless you upgrade to a paid plan (which is billed annually), or you can pay an exorbitant amount for a 1 month membership. Our club would have been happy to pay a small fee for our one off, small survey, but Survey Monkey does not appear to be interested in this market space with their current structure. I also take issue with their deceptive approach to their "free" offering and will now avoid them in my professional capacity as well.

Best Survey Solution for the Money

We started using just the free version of SurveyMonkey about three years ago just to collect basic information. Although question functionality was limited and you could only collect a limited amount of responses that solution worked great for that start-up period of the company. After a year of the free version we needed to collect survey data from a much larger audience and decided to upgrade to the Select package. The price is extremely reasonable for what you get and great for small companies. With the small investment of just around $200 per year we've been able to collect extremely valuable customer data from surveys to help shape the decisions we make for our product and as an organization. I would highly recommend SurveyMonkey to all companies, start with the free version and you'll be hooked. It's a great solution and with a minimal investment you'll be quite pleased with the results.
  • Provides a clean end-user experience for the person taking the survey.
  • Provides detailed reporting even at the lowest paid level
  • Provides an easy to use interface for building a survey
Cons
  • I would like to see more conditional question options, but I believe that's available in higher paid subscriptions
  • It would be nice to customize urls for survey distribution.
In my opinion SurveyMonkey is best suited for smaller organizations collecting responses from up to 3000 people (that's the most we've ever done at least). I would imagine the higher subscriptions could accommodate more. The best part about SurveyMonkey is the fact that you can truly try it free before you buy it or just keep using the free version depending on your survey needs.

We use it both internally and externally. Audience polls, employee surveys, event feedback... pretty much anytime we want to get information about how we are doing and want to do better.
  • Quantifying feedback. Usually we are aware if there are any issues but it's always a good way to quantify that feedback and find out if there are any real issues that need attention or just squeaky wheels.
  • Flexibility. There is a lot you can do with SurveyMonkey, be it in how you can ask questions, the format or how you can analyze the data.
  • Reuse great surveys. If you have a format that you like, you can easily copy it to tweak and use again. Love this feature!
Cons
  • Mobile functionality needs improvement. So many companies use SurveyMonkey so I think people are used to it, but with email opens increasingly on smartphones, this needs help.
  • Overall look. It's more about function than form. So while I like all the things I can do with it, there are prettier options out there.
  • It would be awesome to have a live chat or screen share feature for when I'm creating a brand new survey. Sometimes just quick insight is all that's needed.
Great for quick feedback. Easy to use, fairly intuitive. If you plan on sending out several different surveys over a year or plan on doing these for trending, it's great.

Good platform marred by recent, bad experience with a now-discontinued feature

We're using SurveyMonkey to collect some quick user feedback for two departments working on a beta version of a new feature for our web-based subscription product.
  • If you use the pre-scripted questions, you are setting yourself up for success. Among the biggest problems faced by people with no research experience who want to do some research is a total lack of understanding of how to ask questions in a survey. By providing pre-screened, expert-crafted questions, SurveyMonkey has provided an end run around that problem.
  • Someone with no technical or analytical background whatsoever can handle SurveyMonkey just fine. Requires zero technical savvy and the analysis function is pretty much push-button, so you can find yourself with useful data even if you are a complete newbie to research (but you should stick with SurveyMonkey's prewritten questions - see above.)
  • Unlike other survey software, SurveyMonkey's Basic version (free) is quite robust and can provide useful results to a simple question set.
Cons
  • SurveyMonkey has recently discontinued a feature that allowed the survey sponsor to offer a prize to a randomly selected respondent. My recent experience with the feature was pretty bad: our 'contest' ended abruptly, with no advance warning or permission requested from us before SurveyMonkey decided to close the contest and tell us that we had to award the prize. Obviously there were issues with this feature, but pulling it instead of fixing it isn't doing a service to your users. UPDATE: contest feature appears to have been discontinued.
  • Bad customer communication on the contest feature; we had to email two different entities (SurveyMonkey) and a mysterious 'prize partner' to try and resolve the contest issue, which was not ultimately resolved to our satisfaction, nor were we refunded the cost of the upgrade.
  • SurveyMonkey could stand to do a better job educating users about WHY they need to ask questions with such care. Assuming the tool is largely being used by people with little or no research experience, some context on how the wording of questions affects the data you collect could keep users from making mistakes by simply tinkering with language without understanding the potential consequences.
Do I need significant support from the survey provider? Do I need questions that are non-standard? If not, do I have anyone on the team who has research experience? If you answered yes to any of those, this may not be the best way for you to do research. Try hiring a research firm instead.
