We use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP with HA extension, for SAP, virtualized, and on-premise. It's a solid-robust OS for long time runs. Some servers still in use are SuSE 10!

This doesn't mean it is immutable, as with the new version, new characteristics (mainly to secure the OS) come up.

Originally purchased to run SAP these servers have now become the vast majority of our Linux OS used. Over the last decade plus we have continued to upgrade existing servers in place and migrated all applications we can to SLES. Even as we moved workloads to the cloud SLES is the preferred OS with very few exceptions.

98% of our end customer workloads run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server . The remaining 2% are those who need to manage Administrative server tasks visually. SAP HANA & all other SAP Solutions are Best Run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server From what I recall one of oldest SUSE Linux Enterprise Server was in use for several years in our own Cloud, today the latest SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SP is in use across multi public cloud and in various patching states. I can't imagine that any other flavors be even close to this success.

I started using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server when Novell started to implement their products on it. Since then, I am a faithful customer. Seldom I met a Linux distribution of such a stability and a great support in the background. I never had to face any outages or interruptions. Also, the educational courses offered by SUSE are sound and extensive and keep our staff in a good position to work with SUSE. Only sometimes, when web application developers present their products to us, and need the latest packages for e.g. Python we faced problems and had to use packages from OpenSUSE - which sometimes leads to download and installation marathons for depending packages. But this got better starting SLE15.

We use SUSE as the primary platform for all services capable of being provided from Linux. This ranges from network services (DNS, DHCP, etc), an EHR (eClinicalWorks), a Curriculum Management System (Elentra), and everything in between. While deciding on a standard product for a stable, enterprise-supported, secure Linux platform that is cost-effective, SUSE stood out as the best option.

We're running our SAP application servers and Hana databases exclusively on Suse products. Our application servers on SLES, our Hana databases on SLES for SAP. So far, I've been impressed by the ease of use of Suse products. The documentation from Suse and SAP covered almost every problem I ran into so far, and the few problems I wasn't able to solve were promptly handled by suse support.

So, it all started with a customer requirement and eventually it has made into our own build and test systems. Currently just being used by a couple of people in the organization, since it has much more influence over in the European Union. It is a stable version of SUSE, which is based on RPM and hence all the rpm packages are supported on this OS, which just gives you access to thousands of RPM packages.

SLES is the most deployed Linux distribution in our company. It is very well supported by SAP and it is used with Oracle, DB2 and other database deployments. It is very consistent, upgrade-able, very well supported, and it runs well on both Power and x86 platforms. it provides a great platform in which to run SAP and other business applications.

Suse Linux Enterprise is being used as our main Operating System for our most critical business application which is our SAP ECC Suite running on SAP HANA. We decided to go with the Suse option for our brand new servers, being it the most popular among businesses, but also because of the great reviews I have read. Suse has been installed on a bare metal and virtual server and it runs very smoothly on both. Our transactional speeds have been off the charts and we can't be more satisfied with the performance that our new servers running on Suse Linux have brought to the organization.

We are using Suse Linux on several of our virtual machines. It is supporting the virtual layer that hosts our application and web servers. It's easy to install and configure. We were not a fan of Suse Linux a few years back, but now Suse Linux has reached a level where it is officially supported by lots of vendors. For example, Oracle Database was officially supported only on RHEL and Oracle Linux. It is also now supported on Suse Linux.

Our implementation of Suse Linux was smooth. We configured a template for our organizational needs and then used it to deploy on multiple machines. The Auto YaST package makes automated installation convenient.

I have been using the product for several years now. I have been very satisfied with it and the way it has integrated into many of the solutions that we have placed in service. Suse Linux (SLES) is a mature, solid Linux offering. I recommend that companies, which have not reviewed its potential, take a second look.

The Oracle database and application server, and the Orarun SuSE package made deploying those products so easy. It even allowed us to move most of the Oracle software configuration effort away from us to DBAs and application support personnel.

I do not know if YaST or Orarun made the most impact in our organization. Both made life a lot easier. YaST just made administration a breeze.
