Talend is used to build a corporate data warehouse solution which centralizes all relevant company intel into a single repository. Talend is used for development only by the IT department (as expected) but the information it gathers is used for the whole company. The main problem which talend addresses is to unify different sources of intel by retrieving data from databases, files, web services, the internet, etc.
  • Reading for multiple sources: Any modern Database, Files, WebServices, etc.
  • Monitoring and scheduling task dependencies for data loading purposes.
  • Really useful to design a Data Warehouse, thanks to its built in components for design patterns like SCD, etc.
  • It's also useful to publish data interfaces via WebServices or REST.
  • Good and high qualified support team.
  • Connecting to various databases from classic Relational (MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL, etc.) to No-SQL Databases.
  • Well documented.
  • Community which provides plugins, etc.
Cons
  • Installation process of Integration Suite platform.
  • JAVA memory management. It's easy to get a memory overhead error, and you have to modify configuration files to increase memory manually.
  • Migration process.
It's perfect for data warehouse implementation.

We have a high amount of excel files coming in from different departments. They all have a different data structure. It was very difficult integrating all the types of data, with different data sizes. We used Talend to integrate data in one format. We had to perform data analysis, pattern recognition. It had a big impact on overall efficiency. We also found several bottlenecks, and narrowed our focus area.
  • data integration
  • support for different data sources
  • documentation
Cons
  • memory management
  • too technical for business users
  • IDE is slow
It is very useful for disparate data sources like Excel, Microsoft Access, SQL server or any relational database. Also, cases where you need data transformation, a lot of pre-processing, Talend is very good. Its tMap is very useful. It also has various transformers, and we can add custom logic for various data fields.

Pricey, but well-suited for large organisations

Talend Data Integration is primarily used by the data warehousing team. While the management of data warehousing in handled by a single team, they work with data sourced from and sent to all departments across the entire organisation - this makes Talend Data Integration a critical software component for our use cases.
  • Easy to use interface
  • Designing jobs is very straightforward
  • Allows the use of custom components to suit specific needs
Cons
  • Syncing with Git should be made easier
  • Can face issues with certain big data spaces
  • Support find it difficult to resolve complex issues
If your organisation or department works regularly with ETL jobs or sources data from multiple locations and needs to integrate them to provide for better data compatibility, then Talend Data Integration is a great tool and I would strongly recommend it. This mostly applies to established corporations, and not startups as the licensing fee is quite high.

Talend DI Suite Review

Talend Integration Suite has been chosen as the enterprise data integration tool for our client. We were using Informatica Power Center before that. Currently we are recreating the existing power center mapping in Talend to decommission Informatica. All new projects are using Talend DI. Talend has data integration, big data integration, data profiling and master data management components which are widely used in our projects based upon the data requirements.
  • Its an open source tool.
  • Developers can add new customized components to Talend for specific needs.
  • It has low cost as compared to commercial data integration tools.
  • The enterprise version has an option for integrating a variety of data platforms and connects to variety of data sources.
  • To run a job, a developer need not upload it to the server, jobs can be run locally.
Cons
  • Data loading components for different databases can be improved further. Currently Greenplum target compenents or postgre data target components are not yielding high throughput,
  • Transformation components can be made visually more attractive and informative.
  • Syntax used in data transformation can be simplified.
Talend Integration is a complete data integration suite which can cater to departmental as well as enterprise data integration needs.

Awesome Product intelligence tool.

Talend is helping us in getting the data extracted from mediation (Telecom) and transforming it into reports like Prepaid recharge master and credit limit enhancement. Products are also configured and used as a lookup for charging. We have also integrated Talend Product Intelligence with Tableau for region-wise revenue dashboards. For senior management.
  • Helps data transformation for dashboard creations.
  • Helps in decision making.
  • Helps detecting revenue leakage.
Cons
  • Pricing for sure can be the area for improvement.
  • Real time processing is slow as compared to other tools like Abinitio.
  • While developing batches, it crashes a lot. It may be the issue with me, but I wanted to highlight it.
I would not suggest it for real-time processing as it seems slow to me, however, processing bath files or product mapping, it's a good tool to use.
