Started using the Telerik rad ajax controls, because of the rapid app development impact. Whilst you could write all the controls by hand, this offered consistency and product support, unlike https://material-ui.com/ components that are partially documented and not fully tested. So if you are focused on delivering features then [Progress] TelerikUI is great, but it looks like Telerik /Office 365 controls, so very familiar to the user. If you want to be unique then less good. Of late I used it to generate many internal line of business applications, replacing Excel Spreadsheets and associated graphics. It's very speedy in doing that.

The key feature is Rapid Application Development with a focus on Internal Line of Business applications - Business digitization. Assume your company has less than 5 developers and you are either fire-fighting or quickly solving problems, where the solutions have to work on all browsers, meet all standards because you don't have the resources to do it. You are paying for their technical support, their extensive testing as you don't have the time, if you want it to follow conventions e.g. BootStrap or Material Design out of the box, then that is just a selection.
Less good at creating a UI that is very different [from] everybody else, e.g. must not look like BootStrap or Material or AppleUI.
  • Rapid development with limited resources - ROI
  • However, you have to pay for it and you have your dev team in the office anyway, they might as well code from scratch, so for some free always wins, especially if you have many developers
Telerik Support (pre-progress) is awesome, way better than Infragistics or Syncfusion.
Syncfusion is a little cheaper.
They all have Grid components (like Excel) then there are a few edge cases of having different controls to another to show off. Once you know what UI tech you are going to use e.g. Blazor/UWP/React/JQuery then you need to check if the feature set is in the product list and is it fast enough for your needs.
Telerik UI support is what you are paying for.
If something does not work you ask them for an example of how to solve your use case.
The SEO on their sites is awesome and so well bedded into Google.
The videos are good, [they're] not used much but their examples and DoJo examples make all the difference.
The UX of their UI is very well thought out, the micro-interactions are intuitive - thus great for your end user as less training is needed.
Using the software, there [are] loads to get you going, you can download their whole demo site and see how each demo works. There is more now on github to get you started, also much on an awesome CDN that's well bedded in so your app is speedy and up to date.

Not the cheapest product out there, and now that Progress bought Telerik the price will be an issue.
More POC testing, and feature/price comparisons.
In the past, you could buy just the single controls from Telerik that you used, e.g. the Grid.
If your project just uses a grid then you could write your own, test it, do all the compliance work.
But when a breaking change comes out with a new update to Windows, to MS Internet Explorer/Edge or Chrome -[do you] have the resources to fix it or has Telerik done it already?
How much is that time worth to you?
If you are working in the health sector and the hospital is using really old PCs and have low budgets, how are you going to support all the different browsers, or do you want somebody else to do that for you?
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
The implementation went smoothly. However, many of the charting UI has been replaced with PowerBI.
Telerik support is premium support. When you buy it you get the first year with it, it makes all the difference then after that it's just a case of renewals, and you get the latest upgrades as well. If you want confidence, then get support.
Yes
Yes, and I get a hotfix or a workaround, it's hard to find bugs these days.
Sometimes their support extends into chargeable application design, as long as you don't take the micky that's part of the support. This is a grey area, e.g. what [is] the best UI control to use in a given use case. They now offer Technical/Solutions consultancy service which is long overdue but is quite obvious having met many of their developers at trade shows (NDC/DevWeek etc).

We use Kendo MVC UI to create forms for data entry and grids to display data. We have large amounts of data and some of the controls need to hold thousands of records. Kendo virtualization works well for this.
  • It works well if you need to have a drop down control containing thousands of records. The virtualization feature only loads a small amount of data at a time and the type ahead allows users to quickly find the desired record.
  • The grid functionality is better than most other comparable controls. The users like grouping, reordering, and hiding/showing columns.
  • We ran into a defect several months ago. Telerik accepted the defect, but still hasn't provided a fix. There is no estimated time when it will be resolved.
It's well suited when you have large amounts of data with complicated dependencies. JQuery UI would be a better choice if you just need to create simple forms.
  • Improves productivity.
  • Simplifies coding and greatly reduces JavaScript.
PowerApps contains integration into backend data sources, but very limited UI functionality in the controls.

Telerik requires additional data source integration development, but offers essentially unlimited UI functionality
Support is very responsive and normally replies within 24 hours. My only complaint is that we are still waiting for a resolution for a defect we found.
The MVC helpers greatly simplify development. There are some inconsistencies between controls and poor documentation as to when event callbacks are made.

We use it within our entire organization. It is used in our business applications both internal and external. Our clients enjoy the visual UI appearance and the functionality and flexibility of the controls. As for business problems, it makes implementation easier because it contains a lot of functionality built into the controls that we would have to otherwise write ourselves.
  • The numeric text boxes provide validation and ensure only numbers can be entered without having to write javascript code.
  • The datepicker control offers a very feature rich calendar that meets all of our client needs and I don't have to add any javascript code.
  • The grid is incredibly feature rich, with paging and sorting and filtering built in and I don't have to add any server side code to perform these functions.
  • I find the dropdownfor control is very easy to implement and is richer than the standard control and easier to customize
  • I wish the order of scripts were not so particular. You absolutely have to load the external scripts in the correct order to implement due to the range of icons that are used in some of the controls, like the grid.
  • I wish there were more formatting options for text boxes for things like zip codes and social security numbers.
  • It would be nice to be able to just add a script file and css file to the end of whatever external files we are already loading. Kendo tends to be very picky about this part.
  • I would love to see telerik offer report controls
  • It would be nice for telerik to offer complete basic forms
We use a lot of forms that include dates, numeric inputs, drop downs. We also use a lot of grids to present groups of data to our clients. Along with this, the grids allow sorting and filtering. Our clients love that kind of stuff. In addition, the controls are much prettier than the standard .Net controls.
  • The clients love the flexibility of the controls, thus they readily ask us to create more applications, improving our ROI.
  • The controls are easy enough to implement into our applications and easier to code against than the standard .Net controls which speeds up development time.
  • We can easily move our applications from Test to QA and then to PROD because the control libraries support our environments, making the deployments faster.
  • The only negative I would say - the issue with the external scripts order is a bit of a learning curve for incoming developers. It slows them down just a bit at the beginning.
javascript datagrid - This is a pretty lightweight javascript library that takes a database query and converts it into a javascript based grid. The grid has sorting, filtering, and paging capabilities.

I prefer the Telerik grid personally once the styling and script files are implemented correctly. The Telerik grid is very flexible in that the data can be consumed from either server side or javascript, depending on the needs of the application at the time. I also like the way most features and functionality in the grid can be just hooked in via properties or events.

I will admit, however, that the javascript datagrid has a quick implementation learning curve because it is basically one js file. After that, it is all javascript code.
Any time I have needed support, I just log into their website and create a trouble ticket. They have always responded within 24 hours with easy-to-follow, broken-down instructions. In all cases, they have provided code snippets for example for any difficult scenarios. If I get an answer that I don't completely understand, they explain it in more detail and usually provide code snippets to help illustrate difficult tasks. I have also had tickets answered and have asked for more detailed explanations. Instead of closing the ticket and opening new ones, they have just kept the ticket open for me until I was completely satisfied with the answer.
Yes
javascript datagrid. Telerik grid provides much more functionality out of the box without having to write additional code. The UI is much prettier and professional looking. Most common functions can be revised or added in by simply setting properties in the HTML. The users love the sorting and filtering capabilities and responsiveness of the grid
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Product Reputation
The features in the grid were a big sell to most of our clients. We have several applications that display query results based on date ranges. This often includes sorting, filtering, and paging. The grid performs these functions naturally right out of the box with just a few property settings. This reduces development time dramatically.
I would probably spend more time smoke testing various components, including various reporting components. I would kick the tires on them as much as possible, doing larger queries so I can put the grid and reporting components under various stress tests. I would also compare these components side by side against other popular vendor components for value and return on investment.
