What is TestFlight?

According to the vendor, TestFlight is a beta testing platform that aims to simplify the process of inviting users to participate in app and App Clip testing before these applications are released on the App Store. By leveraging TestFlight, developers have the capability to invite up to 10,000 testers either through email addresses or by sharing a public link. This versatile product supports various platforms including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, watchOS, and iMessage. Within the TestFlight app itself, testers can not only provide feedback but also gain access to beta builds.

TestFlight offers significant opportunities for industries or professions such as app developers and software development teams seeking a streamlined method of obtaining valuable feedback and ensuring comprehensive app testing prior to their release.

Beta Testing

The product is designed to simplify the process of inviting external testers and collecting feedback by offering a user-friendly platform. It enables developers to create multiple groups and associate different builds with each group for targeted testing. TestFlight App Review approval is required before initiating testing, beginning with the first build of the app. The tool also facilitates beta testing within teams, accommodating up to 100 members assigned as beta testers with designated roles. Each member can conveniently test beta builds on various devices and access all available beta builds. To streamline installation and feedback collection without dealing with UDIDs or provisioning profiles, testers are prompted to install the TestFlight app from the App Store. Public links are provided as an effective means of connecting with testers outside established groups; however, caution must be exercised in incorporating public links to ensure a favorable user experience. Overall, TestFlight offers features aimed at simplifying the beta testing workflow for developers while promoting efficient communication and collaboration with testers

Feedback Collection

The TestFlight app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS facilitates testers in conveniently providing feedback through the use of screenshots and crash context. Its primary objective is to enable developers to obtain valuable insights that can be utilized to enhance their applications. The vendor asserts that this feedback feature offers effortless access via the TestFlight page in App Store Connect, thereby assisting developers in their ongoing endeavors to improve their apps.

I am a mobile developer, so the use of TestFlight is vital, I need clients and other developers to be able to test the apps I use in an agile way, when do we start developing apps? We encountered the problem that it was difficult for customers to test them, we had to make configurations that were very complex at times. The customer complained about these situations and it was also difficult for us as developers to be able to have the products ready for each person install them on their cell phone.
  • Organize testers in groups
  • Easy way to send builds to user's devices
  • Manage differents versions of the OS
  • Organize the keys and different authentication files
  • The learning curve
  • A faster way to send build to only one device
  • Easy way to manage keys and auth files
The most appropriate scenario in which TestFlight can be used is when we are in a very large project and we need several people to be able to test the build that we have created. The least appropriate scenario would be when a user is starting to learn to develop applications in iOS since simply by using the tools that Xcode gives, what is the programming IDE. You can test the applications on your device or in the simulator, but this is a really good tool to learn in that scenario but is not mandatory.

We develop and use our own apps for our social science research. To ensure that the data collected with them also provide meaningful data, we test the respective apps in alpha and beta tests with selected students. We have been using TestFlight very successfully for different test scenarios for three years.
  • Invite users to test our apps.
  • Collect valuable feedback.
  • Sharing a public link to our apps.
  • Involve a very large number of users.
  • Provide live feedback.
  • Changing email addresses of existing users.
  • Limiting public links according to individual criteria.
TestFlight has been particularly useful for us when we wanted to test different aspects of our apps with large groups. The ease of use made it possible for non-technical students to participate in the tests. This also allowed us to get feedback from those groups of people that we would not have been able to reach or would have had difficulty reaching with other test environments.

An App to Test Apps

We need to test changes or new mobile apps developed by the company on iOS devices. The concept of using one app to test other apps is a little strange to me, but the tool allows you to release demo versions to members of the beta tester team, with version control published for each different team. This allows diversity, facilitating the control and management of tests on different models of equipment, with different versions of the operating system.
  • Good: version control made available to each team of testers
  • Good: Testers can be part of the development team, or be external users.
  • Bad: Sometimes a new release is not automatically made available to an individual or team.
  • Include integrated feedback form, with screen print or field to which comments are desired
  • Listing "What to test" could be a checklist, for the purpose of controlling what has been or still needs to be tested.
  • Does not support iOS versions lower than 12 (as of the publication date of this review), even if your app supports older versions.
Approval of a beta version of a mobile application is easier with Google than with Apple. The concept of using an App to approve another App is unnecessary, since the store itself may have controls to make beta versions of applications available to specific people or guests. But within the existing resources, it is a good tool, it delivers what it promises. Best Usage Scenario: Development team has multiple beta testers, or needs to validate the app on different iOS versions and screen resolutions. Does not apply: Apps that support older versions of iOS, as Test Flight requires iOS 13 or higher.

TestFlight is a way companies are exposing me to new iPhone apps for me to test as part of an early access program. With TestFlight I can install apps outside the Apple AppStore and easily send bugs and RFEs to the company or to the dev group in a very easy and efficient way.
  • Easy use
  • bug reporting
  • software updates
  • keeping old configuration
  • notifications related to internal apps
  • get customer trust
When you need to expose a beta version of an app without publishing it on the official app store, TestFlight is the best tool for the job. it can provide that segregation while motivating the user to post their finding with a super-easy way to do so and to improve the product or app.

TestFlight is an easy way to test your apps on Apple devices. We use it to quickly test a new build of the app on iPhones. You have to make a group and add the emails in the Apple developer control panel. Once you go through the US export customs encryption permissions, it releases the app to your chosen emails. If the user can not access his email, then it you have to do a workaround which takes some time and is a headache. You can use the test build for 60 days. Of course as you probably guessed, it does not work on Android or other platforms.
  • Simple to use
  • Fast
  • If you could use it without the Apple developer account panel, it would make it better.
  • More statistics
  • Longer expiration date
It is the easiest and cheapest way to test your Apple apps before releasing it. Then, you can then quickly release the app if you are happy with new build. It does not have a lot of bell and whistles. It does the job directly and quickly. If you need to debug or see some statistics, then look elsewhere. It is better than using the simulator in Xcode.

We make a lot of apps and games and before publishing, we run a lot of user testing and for that purpose we use TestFlight. Usually, we test our beta apps/in-development apps for bugs and feedback. we share it through TestFlight so it's more secure and easy to reach our clients and employees or team working on the app. It's our go-to solution whenever we are developing an iOS app.
  • It's from apple, so obviously reliable
  • easy and convenient for iOS apps
  • sharing through link or email and staying secure is a key feature
  • as UI/UX person, helps a lot to gather feedback on actual beta app
  • Not for everyone, you'll need iOS developer to set up.
  • You have to have an iOS running device
  • Noting particular other than that
Honestly, 99% of users are taking advantage of TestFlight when they are developing an iOS app and they use it for testing and sharing beta versions to clients and test users to find bugs and see how the app is working. And Apple users won't go anywhere else than using TestFlight. It's a part of the process and unknowingly we are doing this for years and without TestFlight it's not possible to share beta apps to iOS users. I mean it's not like an android APK that you can just share and expect anyone to install. And that's a good and bad part of it. It's secured and reliable and saves you from copycats and hackers.

I can get early access to the new tools for the Apps my business use. I use them personally and I recommend to my partners and employees to use them when we have some new important tool (as we judge) for an App we use and make a great difference in our routine and business in general.
  • Friendly interface
  • Good technology
  • Good for Apple Apps
  • Bugs solves
  • Contact with a developer manager
  • Tutorials and Terms
On iPhone, I can say that's essential, once we use a lot of Apps iOS native for the jobs we do. Once social media is a big tool for the educational business and influencers we partner up, can get early access to testing tools and some spoilers are a big deal.

TestFlight is a simple way for us to deploy test builds to testers. It makes it really easy for customers to experience new features before they are in a production build.
  • Easy to use
  • Really fast
  • Integrated right into iOS
  • It can be challenging to go back to older builds
  • Auto-update can sometimes result in abrupt and unexpected changes
  • It's not always clear when new builds are available
It works amazingly in situations where you want people outside of your organization to be able to try features before they are ready for production. It doesn't work as well when you are wanting to distribute an app out to the masses.

I have been using TestFlight to test iOS applications made by others developers. We have multiple OS in our company, and they ask Android and iOS users for some help to test internal applications. So as I have an iOS, I've been using TestFlight to test iOS applications. Using TestsFlight allows us (as a tester) to start beta testing send feedback and crash reports.
  • Send crash report.
  • Add internal testers.
  • Add external testers.
  • Notify testers.
  • App must be approved on Apple Store before submitting with external testers.
  • Number of beta builds send per day.
If you want to test your app among multiple users/devices, TestFlight is well suited! In fact, you don't have to worry about what version of iOS your testers have, or what device. Everything is logged directly into the app. Setup is quite simple, and adding internal or external users is also quite simple! You have access to remote logging and sessions. For both sides (tester and developer), this application is simple and easy to implement. The developer will be able to check where exactly users click or navigate. The main con is that an app needs to be approved on Apple before doing some beta test. It means you have to be in the final step of a project, as the app needs to be approved.
