We use Raiser's Edge to manage constituents, process and track gifts to the school, use actions and the Proposals tool to process moves management and track where a donor is in the process of making a gift (qualification, solicitation, stewardship, etc.). We use it to pull queries, exports and reports used for mailing lists, event/invitation lists, financial reports, financial reconciliation reports with our school's Business Office, Attributes to track various activities and positions held by constituents, constituency codes to manage our people (students, alumni, current parents, alumni parents, Board of Trustees, etc.).
  • Reports based on Constituency Codes
  • Gift entry
  • Profiles
  • Annual rollover of school constituents. Each year, seniors become alumni, senior parents with no younger children at the school become alumni parents, same with grandparents. Withdrawing of students and former faculty/staff. This process is tedious and time consuming and does not integrate easily with Education Edge. Seniors Systems does a better job. Education Edge, Raiser's Edge and Financial Edge should integrate better, and there should be a simplified summer rollover process for schools. Schools are a different ball-game than non-profit agencies due to annual rollover. Queries, imports, etc. can take WEEKS to get everything accomplished for summer rollover at a school. Could and should be simplified across the board for schools.
  • Queries and reports are not easy to pull if you want to use criteria outside of constituency codes, such as attributes, total cumulative giving, giving to just certain campaigns or funds, etc.
  • In general, I think there are several more standard reports that should be put in the Reports Tab. Such as a Pledges Due with installment report. This can be queried, but can't be shown in the standard Pledge Reports.
  • In general, this works well for a non-profit agency, but needs some major improvements to be used at K-12 or K-8 schools. Senior Systems definitely has an advantage because it was specifically designed for schools.
It could definitely take some cues from Senior Systems to be more functional and easy to use for K-8 or K-12 schools. Each year, schools have to transitions their constituents into new roles, as those things change year to year for a school (seniors become alumni, senior parents with no younger kids at the school become Alumni Parents, same with Grandparents to Former Grandparents, we have to import new student and new faculty/staff information from Education Edge, etc.). The syncing with Education Edge is not good, and there could be a much easier annual rollover process for updating Constituency Codes with to/from dates, Education records, etc. It is a very manual process right now.

Raiser's Edge is used by two independent departments within our organization. Each department uses RE to process, record, track and report on fundraising; although, the processes and systems used by each department are inconsistent. The primary fundraising department solicits institutions only and uses Raiser's Edge as a CRM, as well as to track Prospect Research, Proposals and Actions. The secondary fundraising department solicits primarly individuals and uses RE as a rolodex to support direct mail, but does not use it for donor segmentation and targeted analytics, Prospect Research, Proposals or Actions. We leverage RE to maintain consistent and targeted communication with donors/prospects and to avoid duplication of communicaton to donors/prospects by various individuals/departments.
  • Linking with Financial Edge is a strength because our Fundraising and Finance departments work closely to monitor and steward grants and donor intent.
  • The Prospect/Proposals tab, in conjunction with Actions, are very useful in tracking Moves Management and progress toward closing a gift.
  • The Customer Service is insufficient, both in timeliness and expertise.
  • The Sales and Contract team are inflexible when it comes to outlining a contract in detail. The Sales team will make commitments via email but the Contract team will not update their template contract to include that language, leaving the Sales team to suggest a "handshake" deal is sufficient. My organization's financial resources are limited and precious, and we have strict requirements about contract language to limit risk.
  • Unfortunately my organization has not upgraded in a bit, so perhaps this is actually present in newer versions, but additional functionality and fields to record and link to social media would be helpful.
Raiser's Edge is best suited for organizations who solicit individuals in addition to institutions. In this scenario the user can take full advantage of RE's/Blackbauds services related to wealth screenings, prospect research, event planning, etc.

Raiser's Edge was the constituent and grants management tool. It was used to track all donors, prospects, many employees and any grant relationship. The philanthropy department used this product to keep track of what was soliciting each prospect, and the status of grant proposals. It was used to generate reports for senior management, internal reporting controls, and to also track performance measures. It helps the organization to address the problem of keeping track of prospects, and donors and their giving history. It also helped us move donors from one giving category to another one.
  • The reporting in Raiser's Edge is fantastic. There are many "canned" reports which are what most organizations will need, for example weekly giving reports, annual giving reports, solicitor comparison reports etc. It also allows for highly customized reports and for you to save reports that you need to rerun with different dates.
  • Ease of use. Raiser's Edge, with minimal training is very easy to use. I found it, as did other employees, to be very intuitive. Yes, there are ways it can get complicated but the overall ease of use is universal.
  • The user support of raiser's edge is excellent. I haven't been put on hold for longer than a few minutes. They also have excellent chat support which is great if you just have a quick question or need a password reset. Never had such great customer support.
  • Learning how to properly use the reports, exports and queries can be difficult. If you don't go through a formal training, it can be next to impossible to just "catch on". It can be difficult to decide which to use and when.
  • If Raiser's Edge integrated with more credit card processors, that would make work and gift processing much more efficient. many organizations cannot change their credit card processor just because raiser's edge only integrates with a select few.
  • I felt pressured from Raiser's Edge to buy more add-ons, to sign up for additional resources, and pressured to buy their wealth screener. I did not appreciate the tough sell on these, and them pushing my organization to buy these items. We were already spending plenty of money on the product upgrade.
I find Raiser's Edge to be appropriate for a large organization. It has been said to be the "Cadillac of donor software". I think it is most appropriate for an organization with several gift officers, a large fundraising goal and several events. I think this would not be appropriate for a small organization or a start up. There are other donor software that are cheaper with less functionality that could work until they reach a point where they need something with more capabilities.

My organization used Raiser's Edge as our main donor database and CRM. We tracked everything from direct mail to event income in the database. It worked extremely well in all areas we needed to use it in. Reports were easy to run. The Dashboards were clear. And Blackbaud, who owns Raiser's Edge offers wonderful courses to catch your staff up on how to use the software accurately. The most helpful class was for the senior executives and how they can use the database. Them knowing what they can and can't ask for is very helpful.
  • Raiser's Edge does a great job at segmentation. If you just want to run a list of lapsed donors you can be confident in the report that is pulled.
  • Raiser's Edge does a great job at tracking relationships, both internal and external. This helps with donor cultivation.
  • The database also is great at tracking direct marketing programs and monitoring all levels from campaigns, to appeals, to segmentation codes. If you've ever worked in direct mail you know just how complicated the data can be.
  • The database imports and exports data incredibly well.
  • Limited number of users licenses can cause a headache for nonprofits with small budgets but a large number of staff who need access to the database.
I think one of the key things to ask is how many donors does the specific nonprofit have. I worked for one nonprofit that had a list of 50 individual donors when I was hired. It didn't make sense at the time to purchase Raiser's Edge. There were other free tools and resources out there for nonprofits just starting up.

I worked directly with the fundraising team at Catholic Charities. We used this software to keep record of donations both in-kind and monetary, as well as for targeted campaigns and upcoming events.
  • For a newer user of Raiser's Edge it is a very easy platform to use!
  • The CRM and information kept about constituents is effective for targeted campaigns as well as understanding your donor pool!
  • Reporting capabilities are great!
  • It would be nice to see some memory functionality with the program and not allow constituents to be duplicated in the system.
  • Address verification has room for improvement!
I think that Raiser's Edge is a sufficient program for those organizations who are trying to keep better track of their donor database. Uncovering what systems organizations are currently using and stating the features and benefits that Raiser's Edge has to meet their needs is critical.

The Raiser's Edge is used in our Advancement office as our database for alumni/ae, current students and families and other donors. With it we track all donations and interactions with these constituents in Raiser's Edge.
  • The database has the capacity to track all kinds of information. You have the ability to configure it to fit your needs.
  • The reporting features are very useful and you also have the ability to export any field to create your own reports.
  • The mail feature works really well. If you take the time to set up conditional mail merges your gift acknowledgement process can work very smoothly.
  • Information about your constituents is easy to find. The database is set up very logically.
  • Blackbaud offers great support on this product. Their customer service is outstanding.
  • The way that transactions from NetCommunity come into Raiser's Edge can sometimes be a bit cumbersome to process. If you are processing an event registration for more than one event you can't see what specific event the constituent has registered for until the transaction has been processed.
  • Processing gift acknowledgements for honor/memorial gifts can be a bit tricky at first although once things are set up correctly it works very well.
  • The options for Dashboard are sometimes limiting. They look kind of boring. IT would be nice if in future versions there was some kind of an upgrade to this.
I think that Rasier's Edge would be suited to many organizations. While it has the capacity for you to configure it to your specific needs, the basic templates are very well thought out and easy to understand. I would think that the only thing that wouldn't be appealing to smaller organizations is the cost. I've managed a Raiser's Edge database for three organizations and have always been happy with it.

We used The Raiser's Edge at Make-A-Wish Illinois for a variety of different aspects. We used the main NOAH Portal for all of our database entry, donor information, and fundraising management. We also used the team fundraising portion as well which included website functionalities. Our entire organization used it. Sometimes we would run into issues with reports because it can be a little complex to pull them and get the specific information. We were fortunate enough to have an IT Manager who handled a lot of this for us but that was probably the biggest hurdle. We also ran into some issues with duplicate records. There's no easy way to identify and delete duplicates.
  • Gathers all data of donors in one place! You could have a lifetime history of giving, notes in communication, and event participation all on one record.
  • Linking between donors - you can identify family members, coworkers, companies, etc. and with the relationship tab, you can identify each connection.
  • Events Module and Wish Module were great and customizable.
  • Functionality of reports. Can be difficult to organize and grab all data needed for a specific report. Takes a lot of steps to get what you need.
  • Identifying and removing duplicates.
I think it's a great catch-all database for any organization. We currently don't use it at my new job and it's been a struggle. I think the gathering of all data in once place on one record and linking between constituents is great.
