ThingWorx is a solution-focused on IIoT, helping companies transition into the digital world. Through Thingworx and its modules, we can connect live data on the plant floor to the platform on the cloud, monitoring assets' health and its functioning. All through secure protocols that are always updated. We use it to deploy such solutions in the most varied types of customers, from pulp & paper, consumer goods, heavy industry, and whatever industry you can think of. It's mainly focused on monitoring asset health, optimizing processes through the analytics extension, and providing plant-level alerts for faster decision-making.
  • Asset Monitoring - quick and easy to deploy, can connect to the plant floor and get real-time data from devices.
  • Analytics - The TWX Analytics extension has a variety of analyses that can be done into any data source input into TWX.
  • Alerts notification - you can program alerts to be sent via email/SMS seamlessly.
  • UI creation - some features that one is accustomed to using reporting services are not allowed in TWX, such as within a table, directly use aggregate functions such as count, max, min, etc. You need to create specific services in order to accomplish that
  • Even when working with a SQL data source, you cannot easily create a PK that auto increments, you need to create a service to that for you, and is not that simple.
ThingWorx is great if you want to create an MES-like solution for your company, but have data coming not only from the plant floor, but also from databases, azure, and others. You can seamlessly integrate those data and create reports like visuals and mashups. It is also a great solution if you have multiple plants and need to monitor everyone simultaneously and even compare results between locations. ThingWorx is not recommended if all you need is a BI solution, it is not a reporting software and it should not be used as it.

We used Thingworx an IoT solution to improve the efficiency of our client's industrial processes. Thingworx used to reduce the amount of effort and complexity involved in integrating third-party apps by developing and deploying Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) solutions that accelerate time to market. Thingworx featured with its own framework - Thing Model Framework. Which provides effortless integration with other technologies and tools, such as ThingWorx Studio, Kepware.
  • less coding efforts
  • supported with augmented reality
  • remote monitoring
  • data security
  • built-in core tools
  • wide range of functionalities are offered, which requires time to understand
Business processes may be greatly enhanced using the IIoT. Thingworx collects data from sensors and other devices and Users apply SQUEAL in analysing and filtering data, and retrieving particular information. SQUEAL, the acronym for Search, Query, and Analysis, is the search engine used by Thingworx. Initially, we struggled with integration and understanding the core functionalities offered by Thingworx and we scheduled several demo sessions with the support team. Therefore, I can say overall, we had a memorable experience with Thingworx.

I was looking for an end-to-end software app platform for an IoT project. It is great for facilitating the deployment of apps and addressing the management of data with integrated features and modules. They also have great customer service to help with working with the service, especially in the beginning with the steep learning curve.
  • Highly integrated.
  • Good customer service.
  • End to end coverage.
  • Tools could be expanded.
  • Take into account customer feedback.
  • Scaling
It is well suited for situations where you require an end-to-end platform for pushing code and managing data and security of the IoT application. However, it is not well suited for the case when you want to scale the app up to many users and this requires more from the part of the product.

We looked for an end-to-end IoT solution where we will be able to perform the total use case of the project. It gives us the capability, readiness of the software to establish quick growth and definitely saves time to develop the product. This basically made our work very easier in terms of development, deployment, usability, enhancements, etc.
  • Automating the whole business process
  • It utilizes IoT ecosystem to the maximum level.
  • Digital transformation is easily done.
  • Customer support
  • Trial subscription should be increased
  • Should be developed in order to integrate few more modules
It can be mainly used where there is a manual intervention to install and develop the products error-prone. It basically requires less code, so it has a larger potential to be used for most IoT projects. This can make less code, fewer license restrictions, and less staff time which actually solves a lot of time and money. Few of the IoT projects do not require any automation, in that case, there will not be much need for any of the Thingworx modules.

  • Quick monitoring of extraordinary behaviour of a monitored component
  • As the Kepware tools and libraries have become more integrated, the platform has an unrivalled set of interface solutions.
  • Modelling is simple enough to explain to non-specialists but very powerful in its expression.
  • It's difficult to delete entities once the network becomes large and complex. N+Maintaining synchronicity between multiple devs and productions systems has to be carefully managed.
  • Difficult to manage a complicated system
  • MQTT interface needs improvement
As a domain expert, I no longer had to express my requirements in a classical requirements spec, I could develop it in an agile way, continuously improving the data model as my understanding of the application became more sophisticated. The ability to then build a mashup in the same time it took to develop a PowerPoint slide deck was a revelation. As a small, but long-standing partner, I'm confident that the future of our WaterWorX platform will accelerate due to our reliance on ThingWorx to power our smart water applications.

We are a specialist systems integrator working in the water sector, developing water and wastewater treatment and distribution system solutions in the industrial, environmental and municipal sectors. I became interested in Thingworx just as the IOT was emerging as a significant transformation technology in industrial automation. I have a background as a senior engineer in the specification of industry 3.0 water monitoring control and automation.

When I first met the Thingworx founding team in late 2011, I was blown away by the performance and concept underlying ThingWorx. I discovered later that I still need an FRS but it became a strategic roadmap rather than customised local solution.

Since those early days, the platform has gone from strength to strength, and now it is past its critical mass and is attracting a strong partner community. As a small, but long-standing partner, I'm confident that the future of our WaterWorX platform will accelerate due to our reliance on ThingWorx to power our smart water applications.
  • The ThingWorx modeling is simple enough to explain to non-specialists but very powerful in its expression.
  • Mashup builder and analytics utilities are strong and the latest version automates some of the complexity, although I haven't used them yet.
  • As the Kepware tools and libraries have become more integrated, the platform has an unrivaled set of interface solutions.
  • The MQTT interface needs improvement, its crashed during development of new entities on a frequent basis.
  • The standard time series and trend tools are very basic and dont compare well with Top-end historians but its possible with some relative easy interfacing to use 3rd party applications.
  • Care, forethought and experience is required when building complex applications, it's difficult to delete entities once the network becomes large and complex. N+Maintaining synchronicity between multiple dev and productions systems has to be carefully managed.
Well-suited - multiple streams from many data sources, highly scalable application scenarios.

Less appropriate - Large complex one-off process plants with complex logic at the edge.
