What is ThousandEyes?

ThousandEyes is Internet and Cloud Intelligence technology. Its Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM) platform and solutions deliver a collectively powered and correlated view of network and application performance, as well as the Internet. This enables enterprises to work more efficiently and effectively internally, along with service providers, to improve the quality of customer, workforce and enterprise digital experiences. The visibility provided by ThousandEyes also enables enterprises to optimize ongoing infrastructure investments, reduce support costs, quickly take action in response to global Internet outages, and even proactively re-configure networks in anticipation of congestion or other trouble spots.

ThousandEyes solutions are based on an extensive collection of vantage points located across the Internet, and on enterprise infrastructure and end-user devices, providing visibility across the entire digital supply chain, from end-user to application. ThousandEyes leverages the data collected from tests initiated from those vantage points to produce visualizations that can help IT organizations quickly pinpoint root cause of issues that impact digital service delivery, and understand and improve how customers and employees experience websites, applications or services.

The vendor states it is currently used across industry sectors, including financial services, technology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, retail, manufacturing, education and many others. Cisco Systems acquired ThousandEyes in 2020.

ThousandEyes is well suited to monitor the network or cloud applications. If you have an service on the internet ThousandEyes is the best way to monitor them and in case there are some issues with the service, ThousandEyes can show you where exactly the problem is.

At least for me, it is a very important tool to diagnose bandwidth / Routing issues. Any global company should have ThousandEyes, it will avoid you many headaches. You'll need to invest in servers (on-prem and remote) in all locations in which you need, you can take advantage of all the monitoring tools.

Cisco ThousandEyes is well suited for diagnosing WAN faults, BGP path monitoring and web performance. It is less suited for on-premise fault finding especially for anything below Layer 3. It would be nice to see more detailed analyitics and a packet capture function, or potentially some other Cisco integration.

Well, in our case for us best suited is when users call with issues. We're able to sort of determine where the problem is and avoid the finger-pointing. Where it's less suited, I would say in the cloud, that's what we were looking for.

As a retail outfit, ThousandEyes can make a small team just as effective as a full NOC. The ease of use helps teams empower the tiers that are escalating and the peers that are blind to how a network functions. Smaller networks with less complexity may not need to invest as much in operational expenses due to fewer hops.

while the product is very useful in troubleshooting, there is some skepticism in the user community due to the fact that these licenses are expensive. Each Cisco product purchased must be sold with TE licenses.
We were able to do quite a lot of troubleshooting in understanding delay and latency issues for our most recent voice and video quality issues and TE helped us identify the root cause

There are very few good products in this category to monitor network and impact on application performance due to network outage or changes. Impact to cloud based applications like Azure, GCP can give very good understanding on how these apps behave and impact to these apps can be monitored with thousand eyes.

Thousand Eyes is very useful in monitoring any web applications that you need advanced visibility into. It's easy to monitor / poll an application to see if it responds, but it's great to be able to interact with that application and verify that the end user will have a good experience. If there are any errors being displayed, if load-times are too high, or if a particular feature isn't wokring.

ThousandEyes is a great tool for troubleshooting network performance issues, finding root cause for outages, works well with our Cisco environment. ThousandEyes is a great tool for reaching into our remote users home network to troubleshoot network issues like Teams dropped calls. ThousandEyes has a great interface with our Cisco environment

Recommended to prevent network overflow, QoS in Microsoft services, information about network and cloud services.
Not recommended for in house development or to measure some client/server products such as Evolution, a payroll system

ThousandEyes was well suited to allow us to troubleshoot multiple issues so far. The ones that come to mind was a network slowdown issue (cause it is ALWAYS the network's fault), but after multiple reviews of data from ThousandEyes, it was proven it was not a network issue but a Microsoft Defender misconfiguration issue .
