Error handling is not good in TIBCO Business Works. The errors are most of the time very general and it does not tell you the problem itself. It requires a trace in the tool itself to find out what the error means and what data is wrong or missing.

As tool is used in EAI apace where every thing is disconnected or connected via messaging layer. For person with no experience or knowledge in EAI it becomes difficult to digest the entire solution and how it works end-2-end. One good part of BW 5.x is it has debugger, which shows exact message flow we can have break points and inspect i/o - which helps in two ways understanding the flow and easy to identify and fix defects, if any.

The development environment includes a testing tool which is quite easy to use. There is no compiling needed as seen from some other vendors. The tester is quite powerful and allows you to test selected processes. It give you debugging options like breakpoints and stepping through the process. At each point in the process you can inspect the data entering and leaving each activity.

The debugger tool is excellent to perform automated testing. You can easily define your unit tests and execute them in the debugger, then save the results to a file o send them via email or to a DB or wherever you want.

TIBCO BusinessWorks 5 has a very simple and useful testing phase unlike the BW 6 where the testing is very tricky. Logging using breakpoints is still very useful as each palette allows you to see in real time the data transmitted in input or output of the palettes to the designer. The testing phase on IBM Sterling for example does not allow you to see all the steps of file transfer and this results in a more complicated debugging phase

In the TIBCO BusinessWorks 5.X version, the debugger is very lumpy in terms of functionality.

In the 6.Xversion of TIBCO BusinessWorks uses the Eclipse debugger, and you can better understand any issues that may occur in the processes. The great features offered by the Eclipse debugger make it an essential part of the product to develop robust code.

Testing is very easy. The biggest advantage is that you can visualize testing scenarios and you can see exactly in what point of the process you are currently. The console provides detailed information of what is happeing.

Testing the completed BusinessWorks process is also very easy in Desginer. We have a built-in tester within the BusinessWorks designer which can be used to trigger the required flow. The flows can be tested individually as well as on whole application. This makes the debugging work simpler.

In 5.x version this is not as good as expected. In 5.x IDE is not Java integrated so no jUnit or other frameworks can be used. Thus, all unit/performance/load/etc. testing must be impemented ad-hoc and/or using externak tools (such us jMeter or SOAP-UI for jms/rest testing). I know version 6.x improves this, but all legacy flow integration developments in 5.x can't be easily migrated and as mentioned before development experience is worse.

Testing as well as debugging is quite simple on BW as compared to other products. Best part is to be able to validate a part of/complete flow in design time with breakpoints in between.
