  • It has created positive ROI.
  • We have implemented most planned projects.
The overall performance of this platform has been excellent. It is easy to work with the user interface. Creation of digital content and publishing on our social media platforms during marketing has been easy. Running our applications and upgrading our system to meet international standards has been successful. The user dashboard displays reports and performance of all departments effectively.
The customer support team has been reliable and always ready to offer assistance to all our team members when we require their help. They gave us lessons and guidelines on how to implement our projects while using this product. We are grateful from the support we received from the vendor since our systems have been running smoothly since we deployed this platform.

  • Charts are very clear and regularly updated
  • Scheduling reports is easy
  • Reduced number of clicks to access reports
  • Scheduling dashboards - should be able to export to Excel, exporting to PDF looks cheap and not correctly aligned.
  • Calculated Measures - over-complicated and difficult for new users to get to grips with.
  • Admin rights - customers should be able to access other people's reports and schedules if they have admin rights.
  • Dashboards - should have more space than one screen.
Good for customers who want simple basic reporting, however all companies require more in-depth reporting which outshine free online tools. Jaspersoft needs to enhance dashboards, personalise scheduling such as email templates, add company logos and give the whole look and feel a review as it looks very dated etc.

[TIBCO Jaspersoft is] Quicker, clearer and allows for more professional looking reports.
Poor internal knowledge, lack of communication skills and the fact less than 50% of our support calls are answered without the need to escalate.
  • Implemented in-house
New releases can be very buggy, also lacking when it comes to standard time zones and formats that are outside the US. As a company we never feel comfortable implementing a new release for at least 3-6 months due to errors that are found
  • Self-taught
Very simple product to learn. Though lacking in interactive knowledge base and videos
Certain parts are simple to follow, however functions such as calculated measures leave a lot to be desired and as such prevent people from willing to learn how to use them

  • Grouping and paging

  • Role and user management
  • REST integration with our software
  • Runtime database connections
  • Multiple SQL query injection
  • Caching and font customizations
Definitely suitable for ETL, BI, recurring report generation, automatic emailing of generated reports, user dashboards, role-based dashboards, role based database visibility, graphic representation of data.

We have used Jasper for complex financial reporting, media calendar reporting, Invoices, purchase orders, estimates, project management reports in our software

It has issues where there is a need for Runtime SQL connection injection, or where a report has multiple main queries, where you have to depend on custom data sources. Custom data sources have to be written in Java and have a ton of memory leaks and garbage collection issues.

Crystal reports is very expensive and does not integrate well with java based servers. Jasper also provides community edition, if we every want to downgrade the use, we always have the option of eliminating the server and using the reports as they are. Jasper also give you the opportunity to build BI on case by base basis including Dashboards.
We had to hire a consultant to get their full attention, but he was knowledgeable and very thorough
  • Implemented in-house
It has a learning curve when it comes to custom data implementation, otherwise, it is pretty straight forward and they have plenty of documentation
Yes, it was easy. Jaspersoft has a huge opensource community, forums and a ton of documentation and samples online. They also host free webinars from time to time.

  • Multi tenancy
  • Report scheduling
  • 3rd party integration
  • basic charts
  • Chart customisation could be made a lot easier for non-technical users. More control of this through the UI or right click mouse options would make it a lot better to use. Like in Tableau or Power BI.
  • The process for creating drill through charts could also be simplified through better UI options without the need to manually enter parameters and report links.
  • A better way of dealing with existing fields in already created reports that need to be changed or removed from the domain without having to browse through each report to remove the field manually beforehand.
  • The UI and feel of the ad-hoc view/report creator could be made a little more user-friendly with more UI options available without having to refer to a separate website to hunt for the appropriate APIs.
  • Have more pre-calculated chart options. Such as Pareto charts that a right click function would enable on a chart. Presently all the data has to be structured very specifically to do this. DevExpress has had this option available for a long time.
  • Ability to drill through from a Chart to tabular data instead of having to go to the crosstab view to do so
It's more suited if you want to integrate charts and reports directly into third-party software, however, it is limited in functionality after the fact. It's not as good for data exploration and chart creation by non/limited technical people. It's not as intuitive as other products, like Tableau and Power BI.

TIBCO Jaspersoft was chosen because it fitted our software cloud architecture the best and at a reasonable cost. The rest didn't tick all the boxes at the time or were far too expensive. However, the likes of Power BI seem to be a contender now.
While the overall support response rate is very quick. A lot of bug and enhancement issues take a long time to get implemented. We do get notified of their progress, but most of the time it shows as not implemented in the next release. The support engineers are also vastly varied with their capabilities. Some engineers respond quickly with a suitable solution, whilst others seem to stall and ask for more information. When it finally gets escalated or transferred to another engineer, the issue is more often than not, resolved quickly.
  • Implemented in-house
we implemented this, in-house.
I personally did not implement the system. Our infrastructure team performed this. A lot of the common gripes was the lack of online reference material and a cumbersome deployment process. However, once it's up and running, it's fairly simple to maintain.
  • Online training
We were shown a couple of things we didn't figure out initially. However possibly a more specific type of training on Jasper Studio and Jasper Ad hoc report creation might've been better. Some reports are difficult to calculate in the ad hoc report designer. Such as normalisation calculations. Very limited online help regarding calculated measures and the correct syntax. Just a bit too much "fumbling" in the system to get things to work.
While the training was somewhat beneficial, a lot of what was taught to us was what we managed to figure out in the weeks prior. It did provide some useful tips and reference material, but overall something more tailored to our requirements would've been better.
4
Use is spread between software developers and technical service delivery consultants.
4
We're reliant on our cloud infrastructure team to support back end config alterations and Jasper deployment. Our front end developers embed Jaspersoft with our own software. People with a technical background and some analysis exposure is required to support the service delivery side of Jaspersoft.
  • embed analytical reports into our software
  • allow for end users to explore their data which has been collected in our software
  • allows us to produce more complex reports in jaspersoft to then be embedded/referenced in our software
  • can't think of any
  • we would like to link security to individual users within our software
While it's not perfect, it still ticks more boxes than competitors and at a more competitive price. However the usability and online support still have room for a lot of improvement
No
  • Price
  • Product Features
The product features such being able to integrate into our software and be completely managed in the cloud were the most important factors to buying the product
If we had no severe budget restraints we would've gone for something that would give users the best usability experience. Like Power BI or Tableau.
No
Support should be dealt with accordingly depending on severity. For what we use the software for, time sensitive resolutions do not occur frequently enough to justify premium support. It would also depend on what "premium" support is? If this meant 24/7 support or a dedicated support engineer, then it wouldn't be worth while for our current needs. However, critical issues should be dealt with in a timely manner regardless of support level.
Yes
Very mixed results with support, purely dependant on the support engineer. Unfortunately, not all support engineers are created equally, which is expected. However the gap in knowledge is quite large. Some engineers will resolve an issue on the same day, some take weeks which then force us to close the request and raise it again in the hope it gets assigned to another engineer who happens to deal with it immediately.
There was a time when we were just starting to use the system. We did have to get our account manager involved, however we got all the support we requested to create and publish specific reports for one of our customers within a few days. This did help prevent any escalation issues from our end. More decent online reference material would have been preferred, but the support team were very quick to help.
  • creating basic pivot tables
  • creating basic pivot charts
  • creating a basic tabular report
  • Chart formatting (eg. colours, labelling, axis values, spacing). You have to refer to a separate website to copy and past the functions instead of being able to do this through the Jasper Server UI.
  • Updating Domain information. Specifically when you remove a field that's in use. There should be an option to remove the field from all report/views/topics that use the field automatically, instead of having to do this manually.
  • Changes such as setting the default number of decimal places for a field has to be done through a configuration file on the server directly. This should be a UI option.
Yes
the mobile interface is a little slow and cumbersome to navigate through. However, it is still usable if you really need to pull some report information away from a PC.
There is a lot of room for improvement, but the basics are easy enough for non technical end users to pick up. It does allow them to get started, but it requires a lot more effort to customise their reports after that. The online community is very limited as well, so there isn't a lot of reference material available through a simple google search. A lot of people would have to go through the support channels to do things, which ultimately means they don't end up doing it, unfortunately.

Jaspersoft is being used as a part of reporting application for reporting purposes to our enterprise product for SAAS, Hosted clients. Mainly targeted for Admin users to do the below tasks: 1. Day to day reporting needs 2. Scheduling the reports to end users who look for transactions happening in the parent enterprise system. 3. Customize the reports based on company formats. 4. One part of our company product (acquired) uses Dashboard features of Jaspersoft Also the Jaspersoft is being used to track the compliance of mandatory readiness attended by internal employees of company.
  • Very intuitive tool - An Advanced reporting user can figure out in a day on the end to end operations.
  • Easy customization - Simple changes in UI makes it less headache for the end user who maintains the tool. Being an open source product (offers Jasper web services) makes a lot developer friendly compared to SSRS, Cognos etc.
  • Easy Connectivity - Can connect to any data source (can connect to multiple data sources) for a single report - can be customized.
  • Community - A very strong community available online, videos - on basic how to questions, also provides assistance to use case specific scenarios.
  • Ease of Reporting - Can create a reports with in few clicks with out struggle.
  • Domain Designer - A very powerful tool you can create a dataset using clicks with out writing SQL code.
  • OnDemand Scheduling - A very good scheduling feature and a has got lot more simplistic compared to other popular tools like Cognos.
  • Jasper Studio - Very good programmatic tool (desktop tool) lets you customize the reports more company specific, can embed complex coding with 3rd party languages like Java, Groovy (scripting language).
  • Inconsistent Errors - Crash dump errors annoys end users while not giving an clue of the actual reason of the failure. Everything has to be manually dealt by admins who need to tediously investigating through the error logs and investigating the crash dump errors or need to enable auditing which will tax the overall system.
  • Stability , Performance issues - You can experience a lot of Performance issues with the increase of complexity in programming SQL queries but there are majority of performance bottle necks with in the product architecture on the supportability.
  • Scaling - There are lot of hiccup's while scaling the product to huge set of audiences on a large scale mainly due to vagueness on the documentation and test results provided from Jasper support team. Need to invest a lot of internal perf testing before rolling this to large scale users for any reporting needs.
  • Data source connectivity issues - You can face multiple connectivity errors across firewall, windows firewall, 3rd party driver issues mainly due to lack of in-house integration of the product. As the entire product is designed in Java and Java has a lot of issues in supporting MS platforms.
  • Shortsightedness in Roadmap - Lack of Dynamism in product features - Product Managers at Jasper team dont offer much of the dynamic features offered from Tableau, SSRS, Cognos ex: optional/ forced parameters not available in legacy versions - available only in the recent versions. Also restricting schema to end user has to be dealt at the database level by the DBA teams, this feature available of restricting schema is not available from Jasper team.
  • Jasper studio still needs to be scaled up to a lot of extent compared to MS- BIDS - Visual studio, Cognos - Report Studio - especially in terms of supporting multi dataset based queries in a single band of the report, parameters support with multiple datatypes.
  • Support model not matching business model of customers - Any complex issue on legacy versions becomes a lot more challenge in dealing with Jasper team as they force you to upgrade with out understanding the dependencies on production environments. Getting a hotfix becomes lot more challenging. The front line of engineers do a basic troubleshooting with out understanding the actual problem, passing through several levels becomes exhausting before the actual engineer shows up who can fix the issue.
  • Integration with 3rd party authentications - You can face a lot of challenges with authentication with 3rd party clients as there is no clear cut documentation, steps available from the Jaspersoft
It fits the perfect bill for SMB units who operate on a small scale if you are looking for the below needs: 1. Simple reports with few complexities in SQL queries etc. 2. Fits for less no.of users (reporting admins, reporting users). Hardware needs to scaled up accordingly with the increase of usage/ concurrency of the reporting system. 3. Fits for simple scheduling purposes where there are few managers who want reports on a daily basis. 4. Simple dashboards. 5. Monitoring purposes. (Production unit). in case of implementing for large enterprises need to consider the below aspects. 1. No.of users 2. Need to do perf test every report based on concurrency before moving to production. 3. Constant monitoring of reporting servers when the load/ concurrency goes high. 4. Restrict dashboards to only few reporting admins compared to large scale. 5. Constant changes in hardware based on the usage. (physical resources needs to be beefed up in case of higher usage). 6. Check the costly queries, constant fine tuning. 7. Architecture of Web should be made in such away that you can upgrade Jasper web with out impacting your DB. So that in case if Jasper team informs to upgrade for couple of fixes.

Of course, there are challenges in the evolution of Jasper and it may take some time to become a stable product. With Jasper 6.4 the stability is improvised a lot compared to previous versions(5.5). But I would recommend Jasper to any team for the following reasons. 1. Simplicity of design (Any basic excel user can figure out the steps). (Compared to SSRS, Cognos). 2. Ease of scheduling (love the feature of "run immediately", "Schedule in the background"). (Compared to SSRS, Cognos). 3. Can think of going to establishing a monitoring reports for any production unit where the changes in data happen more frequently.
Jaspersoft Engineering/support quality has improvised a lot in terms of responsiveness recently compared to previous experiences post upgrading to Premier license.
  • Implemented in-house
-> Have the system thoroughly tested with production data being restored in a dummy environment before delivering to end users. -> Don't rely on domains/dataset feature a lot especially while giving access to end users and this should be restricted to admins alone.
  • Online training
  • Self-taught
I would recommend any company/client who is looking for Jaspersoft as a solution internally/externally(customer facing) it's better to have the engagement of Jasper consultant to review the system and embed best practices post go-live/pre go-live so that there will be minimal issues.

SQL server (since we host Jasper on this platform). Linux Windows Jasper server
  • Used for native core suite reporting solution (2 major products from our organization use this solution).
  • Automation of monitoring reports from Cloud team
  • Automation reporting for monitoring purposes - Some of the system level alerts, major issues on the application can be tracked provided that information is captured in the database.
  • Designing complex reports using Jasper Studio with custom layouts.
  • Expansion of Automation reporting for monitoring purpose - This serves a great purpose and when we realized that the system has a lot of potential to grow around this area.
Even though there are challenges with Architecture, sizing and other areas with Jaspersoft provided that Jaspersoft comes up with the right set of innovation, performance, scalability, and documentation in future it will be great expansion (win-win) situation for the clients and as well as Jaspersoft.
Yes
Microsoft SSRS, Report Viewer 2008, Microsoft OWC. The reason we replaced them is primarily due to customers started seeing issues with pulling huge data/scheduling abilities.

Price ,Product features comes very handy for us when this decision was taken by our product management team.
I would definitely question the ability of performance scaling documentation, best practices, limitations to be found during the evaluation process.
Yes
-> Development, customizing and integrating according to the core product design. -> Deployment of Jasperservers across the server PODS. -> Deploying of customer tenants.
Change management was a major issue with the implementation
There is a lot of internal documentation needed to be developed in terms of maintenance perspective about the steps to be taken between upgrades.
  • Outages - this was mainly due to lack of documentation related to steps to be taken care of the upgrade.
  • Broken Reports - this was due to certain XML tags needed to be edited post upgrade to higher version utilizing the legacy feature.
Yes
Seldom certain issues on Gray areas of Jaspersoft related to Schedules, Outages we need to have live troubleshooting session from Jaspersoft Engineering team in these scenarios buying a premier license will have a huge impact in resolving the issues faster.
Yes
Yes we had one issue which created a regression over the delivery of the patch Jaspersoft identified the bug and delivered a hotfix within 2 days after reverting the patch.

  • Adhoc views, Domain Designer
  • Custom calculated fields
  • Few end user formatting options
  • Scheduling to ftp, repository and email
  • Adhoc views - viewing the data
  • Loading of parameters page especially while loading huge datasets

I had used mobile interface occasionally to test the platform performance of the core reporting product developed in Jaspersoft it was good for reporting purposes but didn't scale up well for dashboards.
There is a still left out feature - Dashboards which still needs to be finetuned from the Jaspersoft engineering team. Sometimes you can see the reports hanging up on certain scenarios.
