We have been using Spotfire quite extensively in our company to address the data analytics and visualization needs. Primarily it has come across as a handy tool across the department to represent data in a more easy and reliable way. We use it to run some very quick analysis on huge data sets.
  • Getting data through multiple modes is one of the key strengths of Spotfire.
  • Embedded option to code analysis through R/python/SQl makes the tool quite useful and handy.
  • Geographical tagging is also quite useful & unique.
  • Some easy to use features is missing and/or unhighlighted.
Well Suited -

  • For handling huge amount of data sets, it can handle this quite easily
  • For in-depth analysis, through multiple graphs / charts / tables.
  • For creating detailed visualizationa, so as to showcase only relevant data sets / graphs
  • For quick run-through analysis
  • To embed analysis through multiple data sources - may it be a file or an information link

Spotfire is used in my company for different clients (energy mostly at the moment) and to develop business for other companies. It's focused on geo-localization data for the client. We use Spotfire to monitor the activity of the customers and we help the users to be confident with this tool in self-service BI scenarios.
  • Geo-localization is one of the strengths of this tool.
  • Easy to use.
  • Dashboard always available (linked to the source or embedded)
  • It is not possibile to load XML files.
  • In pie chart should be easier to set the category grouped as "Others".
  • It would be helpful to insert a "fuel/liquid" chart to show the percentage of total as liquid.
It is very appropriate to the scenario in which I am working with it: Geo-localization of the data and in monitoring user needs.

I don't think it's very appropriate for a scenario of big data and large amount of data. Maybe it would be a little bit slow compared to others BI tools.

It is being used by multiple departments across Norfolk Southern. We have been developing dashboard type front ends for users using other tools for over a year now. Spotfire has provided us with a tool that will allow us to deploy our dashboards to many users at one time utilizing the web client.
  • Great visualizations
  • Easy to use once data connection/information links are established
  • Scalable to multiple users via web client
  • Difficult to create data connections using custom SQL
  • Limited support of DB2 connections (DB2 on the mainframe)
  • Limited support of network connected documents on a shared drive
If the data is stored in Teradata and the user wants to create a dashboard with visualizations, Spotfire is a perfect product. However, if the data is stored in DB2 on the mainframe, connecting to the data is a little more complicated. I would prefer to write custom SQL that points to DB2 on the mainframe, but this doesn't seem to be possible.

We implement it for our clients, it's one of the most popular technologies we currently offer.
  • Possibility of introducing custom functionality is much better than any other BI tool
  • Able to do complex calculations
  • Some performance issues with large amounts of data
  • Many simple or annoying little things that remain unsolved for years, even though regularly posted on Spotfire Community
  • Even with the latest version, the look and feel is a bit outdated
High complexity of analysis, and highly customized.

We use Spotfire to design Enterprise-wide dynamic end-to-end automated reporting and analytics solutions. We were able to significantly reduce the TCO and eliminate bottlenecks associated with the use of some legacy tools like Excel, PowerPoint, etc. On the other hand, Spotfire lacks some esthetics, doesn't offer all modern chart types, and could be difficult and expensive to learn.
  • Data input automation
  • Automated data transformation procedures
  • Relatively easy to implement
  • Types of charts and tables
  • Availability of basic statistical functions
  • Lack of good documentation and examples beyond basic
When consumers of dashboards are looking for efficiency and information at their fingertips, ready to self-serve and not extremely picky on the esthetics of Spotfire dashboards. The more the user base is focused on results and convenience rather than look and feel of dashboards and charts, the more tech-savvy the user base is, the happier they will be.

Spotfire is used extensively at our organisation and by our clients to leverage and gain insights into large quantities of data. We primarily use it for data exploration, reporting, predictive analytics and data segmentation. With Spotfire we are able to build comprehensive dashboards quickly and efficiently without the need for specialist BI developers.
  • Quickly build reports from large quantities of data and then publish those reports via the web player.
  • Ability to work with data sets in different formats, i.e. data aggregation or SQL queries are not required.
  • Out of the box analytics that makes it easy for business users to gain insights into their data.
  • Ability to leverage R scripts in Spotfire.
  • Easier functionality of Python scripts.
  • Stability improvements are required, software has a tendency to crash.
  • Easier optimisation of reports for the web player especially where large data sets are involved.
Spotfire may not be appropriate for mission critical reporting, e.g. financial reporting.

Well suited to enable business users to quickly build, change and enhance reports.

Currently Spotfire is being used by the Global Sourcing organization with the aim of it being expanded throughout the organization. If it becomes popular enough, it will likely be implemented throughout the company on a more holistic basis. It is used currently for analysis, reporting and strategizing as far as indirect procurement.
  • Easily reads in multiple data formats
  • GUI to alter and customize visualizations is user friendly
  • Having the data cached in memory makes the application very fast
  • Integration with external data analysis tools/languages like R and Python
  • Predictive analytics features like decision trees and Bayesian networks
  • Ability to set up data pipelines to Hadoop clusters
I think that this tool is currently the best on the market for descriptive analytics and reporting. It is exceptionally user-friendly and intuitive when it comes to customizing visualizations and managing data inputs. I would like to see it used in more advanced analytics applications utilizing R and Python with compatibility with Hadoop clusters.

Spotfire is the supported tool for accessing an Oracle data warehouse. The data stored in the warehouse is all of our historical human resources data from across the enterprise (we have several operating companies under our brand umbrella) and the warehouse is "fed" every day with new transactions coming from each company's HCM system. We do ad-hoc reporting with Spotfire, build dashboards for analysis, and generally use it to answer any business question that may come up where we need the employee data.
  • Visualizations - it isn't just a data extraction tool but charts and tables can be easily built.
  • Dashboards - I've put together sample dashboards in just a few hours.
  • External Data - very easy to pull in data from different data sources - Oracle tables, Excel, etc..
  • Visualizations - while it is a strength it is also a weakness. We currently use another tool for dashboarding and we will move to Spotfire because it is more powerful but the actual charts in the other product are more appealing.
  • Set up - we are responsible for setting up our own joins, information links, elements, etc. This is overwhelming for beginning users.
  • SQL - It is hard to debug issues with the SQL. I often find myself copying the SQL into another tool to decode and build and then will copy it back to Spotfire.
It may not be suited for the inexperienced user simply because of the complexity of the setup. But that is more likely due to the way our company supports the product (that everyone is on their own). But once all of the setup is complete, creating reports and charts is pretty easy and quick.

It is being used for reporting and creating meaningful visualizations.
  • Recommends visualizations for you
  • Mapping capabilities - though having pre-set coordinates would be nice
  • Filtering on historical dates and timelines
  • Mapping capabilities - coordinates, additional layers
  • Calculations and formulas to be more user-friendly, like Excel
Creating quick graphs and timelines is really good. Could use a bit more on user friendliness on the graphical tables. I like the idea of them but don't find them as easy to create.

We use it for both ad-hoc analysis and for creating dashboards that are used at various levels.
  • Pulls in data from a variety of sources
  • Quick and nice looking visualizations
  • Filtering and slicing up data to see different metrics
  • Limited variety of specializations
  • Limited ability to set some preferences (lines on tables, how labels appear, etc.)
  • Some features are buried in non-intuitive places
Excellent for visualizations and analysis.

  • Spotfire is an analytical tool more than a reporting tool. It is highly customizable via its API but it has enough out-of-the-box features to get the job done.
  • It does some data management, but it is recommended to have the backend data clean and in place for great and reliable output. It has many statistical functions so adding columns on the fly is a breeze.
  • Spotfire is referred to within the analytics community as "Excel on steroids".
  • It is a great tool for highly interactive visualizations and drill down.
  • Many features are hidden and hard to find, but like the new version of MS Office with the ribbon replacing menus and toolbars, it's all about experience and learning the interface.
Spotfire is not just a tool. It's a Framework. The product is highly customizable. As a .NET product, it can be easily customized using either the .NET framework or IronPython. R is also easily integrated for statistical computational features that require more than the out of the box functionality.

  • We are an energy consulting firm and we use Spotfire to analyze streams of real-time energy trading data for deal analytics, forecasting and risk management.
  • Spotfire is an amazing analytical tool which will help you pick up data from multiple databases and spreadsheets and create graphical and analytical diagrams that will help businesses in several ways to understand their systems throughput, number of exceptions, etc.
  • One of the big advantages offered by the product is real-time analysis. There is no time lag between availability of trading data and analysis. The systems allows us to analyze large amounts of trading data in real-time.
  • It is restricted to input from databases and spreadsheets

Spotfire is being used by several departments across the organization. Spotfire provides us with the ability to create visualizations and dashboards from the data that we have collected. In addition, it allows us to build and deploy complex predictive models. The business problems that it solves are: 1) what are the characteristics of our device performance and can we see/understand aberrations in that activity, and; 2) what do our financials look like and how are we as an organization performing, what are the issues we face, and, can we project/forecast upcoming performance and issues.
  • Easy to get data into Spotfire, and to combine data from many sources.
  • Easy to create and edit visualizations to meet the needs of the issue and/or end user.
  • Dashboards can be built that deliver insight along with flexibility to allow end users some capabilities to explore the visualizations or customize the inquiry.
  • Can provide or deploy advanced analytical models.
  • There is a need for additional graph types. The visualization set that comes with Spotfire is becoming rather limited.
  • Working with R is rather difficult.
  • There is no ability for text display visualization; a word cloud or similar would be useful.
Spotfire is good for data analytics in a simplified format.

Only a small portion of the organization has system access. The analytics team uses Spotfire to analyze product data and support manufacturing investigations.
  • It's really easy to create interactive visualizations
  • Can quickly merge different data tables and manipulate the data using pivots and other transformations
  • Great design and aesthetics
  • Sometimes runs slowly when working with large data sets
  • It's difficult to add additional files after you've already performed a transformation on the data
Spotfire is really powerful at analyzing data. You can easily create interactive dashboards to gain insight. The wizard is useful because it suggests visualizations based on your selected data set.

We are using the Spotfire Platform in support of several of our government customers. One customer already had the software available and we showed them how they could use it effectively, while another customer is only using the software because we recommended it. We use it to help the customer see and explore their data in different ways. This software will help our customers make decisions that will affect their entire organizations.
  • It is fast to go from data to visualizations, whether you are using the Cloud Work Group environment or the full Spotfire Server implementation.
  • The visualizations are easy to configure and generally can explain the same data in different ways, which is appealing.
  • Being able to mashup different disparate data sources has been the saving grace for us. We don't need to house the same data in a single database. We can pull what we need from each to create a useful decision support visualization.
  • Scripting support is lacking in documentation and features.
  • More charting types and integration with things like D3.js.
  • More control over the underlying HTML, CSS and JavaScript would be fantastic. Customers want this integrated into their existing sites.
The Cloud Workgroup Environment would be sufficient if it offered the same features as the full server but still hosted and managed by Spotfire. That would let me give you a 10 for this rating. Also the cost jump from a Cloud Work Group of 2K to a full server 100K is steep.

Currently I am in progress of implementing the Spotfire globally in OMV E&P due to the fact that the product brings flexibility in visualization and data mining. The product will be used to create visualizations/analysis which will support decision makers to make the right decision at the right time. It adresses the entire OMV E&P investment portfolio.
  • Main strengths are easy configurable graphs/visualizations
  • Fast filtering and accessible data mining
  • Easy deployment on web for users' access
  • Easy configurable user access levels
  • Preconfigured creaming curves graphs (at the moment you need to build several formulas in order to build such a graph)
  • Preconfigured waterfall graphs
  • Drill up and down functionalities on all graphs allowing the user to drill from one tab to the other (currently partially available)
Data mining and Analytics, Dashboarding is perfectly fitted.
Less Appropriate in building graphs which are not pre-build into the tool (e.g. Waterfall graphs, creaming curves...).Drill down graphs/tabs.

At Tapstone, Spotfire is primarily used to quickly visualize and amalgamate data used by other programs or from Excel documents that is stored in bulky table formats that are not optimally useful in their raw state. Spotfire aids in our ability to quickly summarize data into useful information, and point us in the direction of a useful drill down.
  • Spotfire's marking capibilities on line charts make it very easy to identify associated points on cluttered line graphs.
  • Spotfire's filtering makes it very easy to boil analyses down to specific subsets of data, and then build them back up to whole again.
  • Spotfire has the capability to link to many different data sources, making it relatively easy to keep an analysis up to date by linking to a live data source.
  • As an Excel user, it is an odd transition to shift from thinking in terms of cells to thinking in terms of tables and columns. Some things that would be intuitively easy with Excel (adding 4 random cells from a document by clicking on each of the 4 cells) become much more complicated when you have to think in terms rows and tables only.
  • When linking multiple live data sources together, then adding calculated columns to those data sources, then moving columns from one data table to another in one project, Spotfire can take a long time to open a project. It is also relatively easy to end up with a document that does not calculate the intended results in the most efficient way, and methods to troubleshoot inefficiencies are not always immediately obvious.
  • Scatter plot line formatting could be more customizable. By default, Spotfire wants to use the same line type for each series in a scatter plot, and it is not easy for this user to figure out if there is a way to change line types per series on a chart.
I would definitely recommend Spotfire to a colleague that has a large set of raw data and wants to quickly consolidate that set of data into meaningful graphs or charts - especially if the data as a whole is likely to bring up questions that could be addressed by drilling deeper into more specific categories of data. It also appears to be especially useful for keeping somewhat repetitive and common analyses live and quickly accessible.

[It's] Very good at visualizing large sets of data. We continue to be amazed at the speed of the application and reliability though. We have had no outages, although we had several release updates. Enterprise functionality is very good (e.g. templates for CI). Data cleaning and transformation ability is good. The web client could have more features and Active Directory Integration could be improved.

We use Spotfire to create dashboards and visualize the available data. Before Spotfire we used Cognos. The company recently started using Spotfire. After a review of our project they will decide to go further with the software and possibly create more dashboards with the application.
  • Nice colors
  • Customize a table with scripting
  • Multiple tabs
  • The HTML isn't working that well
  • More information about scripting would be nice
  • Exporting a visualization to Excel with color coding would be nice. The colors in your table visualization are lost after an export to Excel
It is good to give a quick view of data. There does not need to be much handled to get a nice result. There are still a few things to improve. But the tool is easy to work with. After a few introduction videos are you able to start with the application.

We use Spotfire as an internal tool (within our business group) for analysis and integration of large energy industry data sets. As we add new types of data to these data sets, we can easily create new data visualizations in Spotfire.

We also use Spotfire to deliver self-service data visualization to our clients.
  • Spotfire is very good at combining data from multiple sources, such as from database queries, files, and web-based data sources. We make use of data from all of these sources, and this is a key feature.
  • Spotfire provides a good expression language for performing calculations using the data that has been loaded into a Spotfire document. The expression language makes it easy to write calculations that can be reused. Additionally, expressions can be stored in document properties, providing a centralized set of calculations for easy (and error free) reuse throughout a Spotfire document.
  • The IronPython scripting language makes it possible to create fully-automated work flows, automate the creation of standard visualizations, and provide user-specific Spotfire documents.
  • Although the IronPython scripting language is very useful, you need to understand the Spotfire API to make full use of the scripting language. The API documentation could be improved to be more readable and understandable.
  • The scatter plots need to be able to support multiple data sets on both the X and Y axes, and the axes labels should have more options, such as which side of the plot the labels appear on.
Spotfire is very useful in basic exploration of a data set - grouping and organizing data, quickly spotting trends in data, and then giving basic statistics for a data set. It is much better than Excel for this task, as categories and identifiers do not need to be created manually.

Another use is "what-if" scenarios. It is very easy to create document property controls in Spotfire to vary the inputs to standard calculations and view the results of those change in real-time in multiple visualizations.

Spotfire is used across the organisation in a number of departments. It is used on a variety of platforms including self-service and managed IT platforms. It is used largely as a reporting tool. It is used to create dashboards, applications and it is used for forecasting.
  • It is very easy to use.
  • It is interactive.
  • It is a robust tool.
  • It manages large amounts of data well.
  • In the creation of information links - this needs to be made more robust to allow for more complex SQL queries.
  • In Data Preparation - Ability to stage data.
  • How Document Properties are organised can be improved.
Spotfire is well suited for rapid development. It is fantastic as a managed platform. It has a great interface for managing users and permissions. It does version control brilliantly. You can also track or log users' usage. It is a self-contained tool. On the flip side, Spotfire is expensive and takes a while to set up. Upgrading requires system downtime. Spotfire does not have a robust user-driven community.

[it's] used for analysis of oil and gas properties and wells. It manages very large datasets (hundreds of thousands of wells.)

  • Used to visualize information in a specific manner.
  • Used to help make business decisions on the fly by showing dynamic information.
  • Managing massive datasets
  • Dynamically allowing analysis of information
  • Visualizing data
  • Pane sizing can be difficult
  • Formatting of fonts/info/data types is limited

Spotfire is used by the exploration team at our small exploration and production company. It simplifies our data analysis and creates more in-depth opportunities for data that previously seemed useless. We can easily keep track of large amounts of data and visually display results in a useful way. The mapping component is a huge help in focusing our exploration efforts where we have the best understanding of the geology.
  • Easily plot data and edit graphs - much more capable than Excel.
  • Mapping is a key feature.
  • The support is outstanding, great customer service.
  • The software is not intuitive. Finding menus can be a challenge.
  • Help options are limited.
We do a lot of simple cross plots. These are a pain and time-consuming in Excel. In Spotfire, you can look at every aspect of data in a quick and easy way. Changing the size, color, and shape of points is easy and filtering through data is very simple. One click and you have a new cross plot, there is no highlighting necessary.

Spotfire is being used by a specific department, namely Procurement. It is used to raise visibility of performance metrics as well as historical data housed in SAP BW HANA. An example of historical data is volume and price information. Spotfire enables us to quickly drill down into a specific material and understand how much product we have purchased and at what price.
  • Spotfire is oriented to the design of dashboards, not single visualizations. There is no need to design visualizations and then take them to a different "worksheet" where the layout needs to be further designed. I like the ability to design visualizations in the same place where these will be consumed, i.e., as dashboard elements.
  • Markings and Bookmarks are two powerful elements of Spotfire. Markings make the sharing of filters across visualizations intuitive and flexible. Bookmarks are extremely powerful, allowing you to create stories and share insights based on custom views.
  • The in-memory engine is super fast. As long as the data is loaded in the workbook, calculations are extremely fast.
  • Cross-tables are very easy and powerful in Spotfire.
  • My biggest disappointment with Spotfire is the way the SAP BW connector works. It is not possible to transfer 'key' values from SAP BW to Spotfire, and the data table update routine is not clear, well documented, or straightforward.
  • The calculations syntax is not very intuitive and in some cases, very complicated. The calculation editor does not give you good feedback as to why your calculation syntax is off.
  • Designing dashboards for multiple devices is a headache. There is no built-in way to design for different layouts and ensure dashboards can be consumed seamlessly on monitors, laptos, and portable devices.
Spotfire can be easily deployed in a number of enterprise settings, ranging from small companies to large organizations. I used Spotfire in a small five-user setting, but I know it is being used by large enterprises as well.
