Tableau is the alternative we use. Spotfire is preferable due to integration with R and modeling packages, but Tableau has a wider range of users, so sometimes [we] have to use it too if information needs to be shared with a different organization.

I found Spotfire more intuitive as an author compared to Tableau. Even after completing the intro course in Tableau, I had difficulty recreating steps to achieve a particular set of graphics. In contrast, I was easily able to remember how to achieve a set of graphics within Spotfire. Also, at the time of the evaluation, Tableau did not support a variety of merging protocols while Spotfire did. I believe that is no longer an issue with Tableau, but at the time of purchase, Spotfire supported Right, Left, Inner and Full Merges while Tableau only supported Right merges.

Microsoft Access is a great data base software, but it doesn't have visualization capabilities like Spotfire. With Microsoft Excel there are not nearly the amount of filtering options. In Spotfire you can filter by selecting information from text boxes, or you can select data off the graphs. You can do this multiple times to drill down to what you want.

Spotfire had the best combination of ease of use, analytical features and performance. In my subjective ratings it and one other option were the only ones to achieve the highest rating in 6 out of 7 criteria.

Jump: requires a lot of manual data wrangling and clicking. Reporting is too messy.
Excel: not good for big data. too much clicking to create chart.
Tableau: not advanced enough. Functionality is limited.
R and Python: too much programming needed, visualization requires a lot of time to create.
SAS: a lot of programming.

Better than PowerPoint

I selected the software because I was able to see a demo at work. After that the program worked great for the functions I needed. I don't know any other software than Microsoft. If I had to compare it to Excel or PowerPoint I would say it beats it hands down on charting.

We evaluated on Mobility, Dashboarding, Web Based User Interface and Analytical capability. At the forefront was the user experience which accounted for just over half of our evaluation criteria. No platform was a 10/10 in all four categories - SAS Visual Analytics excelled in Mobility but failed dismally in its web user interface and the design tools (plus the server was a mountain of scripts and unnecessarily complex - too much investment required to spin up) . Tableau looks pretty (clearly) but we exhausted the depth of its functionality in about 6 weeks - we could get more flexibility in design from XCelcius (SAP Dashboards) than Tableau and basically no real analytics with Microsoft Excel type line fitting and extrapolation. Microsoft - great SQL server platforms but the power pivots and power view are designed for baby BI as we call it. So a myriad of sort ofs but not quites! Spotfire was actually the last platform we evaluated and almost came across it by accident (Spotfire shouldn't be the best kept secret in BI and analytics!)). It looked great, easy server admin, quick spin up, common programming languages so we could start dicing up dashboards as if they were web pages instantly, amazing data engine and one of the best yet simplest to administer analytical data engines in T.E.R.R that we saw! It has some very obvious and easy to do quick wins that if implemented would make Spotfire the easiest decision for BI & A shoppers around! Everyday we are finding cooler things we can do and continually reaffirming that we chose the right platform for both clinical, corporate and research needs! it is subject matter agnostic and underpinning data warehouse extensible!

Spotfire was chosen over Tableau originally because Spotfire is a lot less expensive. I prefer Spotfire over Power BI because of the create details visualization button and the entire Spotfire interface is easy to navigate.

Tableau is pretty but very shallow. Alteryx is very nice, but doesn't have the proximity to the data through visual exploration. Alteryx is more like a drag'n'drop analogy to programming, where you are placing icons in a workflow instead of writing code lines in a program. So Alteryx doesn't have the immediate visual display, so I don't feel as close to the data (not as certain of what is happening in there.)

We compared Spotfire 7 to QlikView. QlikView is much older and very less easy to use for analysts (if you use QlikView from time to time, you will need 1 hour before each use to remember how to do things). QlikView is also only an in-memory tool which makes it less powerful.

We also compared Spotfire 7 to Excel, and the difference is of course huge in favor of Spotfire in terms of features, ease of use for complex analyses, and performance. However, Excel provided cell-by-cell editing capabilities that Spotfire doesn't (which is quite alright since the aim of Spotfire is not the same as Excel).

We compared also Spotfire to Kibana, but these are absolutely not the same products (Kibana is only dashboarding whereas Spotfire provides analytic possibilities).

We selected Spotfire for the data visualization capabilities, thus the shortcomings were not as important. However, it would have been nice to be able to consolidate reporting / analytics platforms into one product instead of having BI and Spotfire or Tableau.

Spotfire was selected by our organization for two main reasons: the sales team did a great job in understanding our needs and how the tool could help us and because the price of the licensing ended up being more attractive for us.

We selected Spotfire because our core business and the focus for the future is geomarketing.

Firstly, the price is very aggressive compared to other competitors like Tableau. Then the pre-sale team worked very well with us. In particular, Massimo Milano was always available for any requests and support. It is very quick for building analysis from many data sources.
