It is simple to upload data into Spotfire and select the way you want Spotfire to "view" the data. The program usually has the correct data type already selected. The only problem I have run into is when I have tried to compare two or more data sets within one visualization. The manipulation options become very limited then, which is understandable.

It is a simple process to source data from different sources on different platforms, e.g. SQL server, Oracle, HANA, etc. These data sets can be combined and aggregated into different views using the Spotfire product which can then be represented in different ways.

We bring in data from a wide range of data sources. This includes everything from JSON data through to Excel spreadsheets. Spotfire has been able ingest our data without many problems. Additionally once data has been brought in, there is a need typically to manipulate that data and we have found Spotfire easy to use in that sense. Finally, Spotfire provides reasonably good performance when working with large amounts of data.

Spotfire has the ability to connect to all data sources I have tried to connect it to. I give it an 8/10 because once you connect to a data source, there does not appear to be a simple way to edit that data connection (meaning if you wrote SQL to remove a subset of data, I have not found the way to alter that SQL later to change the subset of data).

The only hurdle I see is the meta data model between the SQL server and the Spotfire. If we connect data from Spotfire to SQL server it lowers the sql server performance. Hence Spotfire created information tools which act as an interface between Spotfire and SQL. The problem is every time the SQL data is refreshed or schema changed the information links are broken. The information links are connected to front end visualization and it breaks too.

We have used a myriad of data sources within our testing and found the in-memory engine to be extremely responsive with very high fidelity of flt data conversion where meta data or data type descriptors are missing. Load times are good with customisable fetch and batch settings and direct edit access to the connection string. Swapping of data sources that support Information links that are bound to products is simple, providing a lot of ease in dynamic environments where data sources change without having to rebuild everything that hangs off the associated data.

I've connected to SQL, Access and Excel and they are all very easy to connect to. Spotfire is able to handle large data sets and also updates in real-time. I don't know if my data table was too large or I didn't have enough indexes but Spotfire did get slow at some points.

Spotfire has a growing portfolio of native support for varying data sources. On a business user level, importing data from different file type data sources is simple and straightforward. Building information links from SQL sources etc., requires a stronger bit of IT support to get full value, but once implemented, provides significant ease of use for the business. Real time data is not yet readily available and requires workarounds to implement.
