Spotfire® is a data visualization platform that aims to speed individual time to insight and spur analytics adoption across the organization. According to the vendor, Spotfire helps users quickly and easily generate insights with three new ways to support their analytical preferences: NLQ powered search, AI-driven recommendations, and direct manipulation. Users can add context with native streaming for integrated analyses of real-time and historical data, best-in-class geoanalytics, and one-click predictive analytics to go beyond basic visualizations and understand the factors driving trends and what will happen next.

They include our systems and network administrator, our ops analyst who handles the maintenance of our database infrastructure, and our DevSecOps manager who oversees this team and handles the major networking hardware and software upkeep.

There are a range of skills needed. For most work, basic knowledge of the product, combined with some knowledge of visualization and computing functionality is what is required. For a few of our users, knowledge of R integration functionality and skills are needed. The integration of R is non-trivial, and may also involve some knowledge of statistics, data mining and/or predictive analytics.

We have someone from IT to support the tool and the platform and the training and the administration. We also have our Analyst with special training from Spotfire directly to be able to handle more complex expressions that the general user probably would not be able to create. As with most software applications it takes a level of logic and common sense. But we are finding even staff with minimal skills are able to use Spotfire once shown what they have to do. Such a great program.

Administrative functions can be learned quickly with initial training from Spotfire or existing experienced staff. Depending on your organization's development process you will need to closely coordinate the migration of development reports and dashboards with the development team. Spotfire development can be accomplished by anyone who wants to use the tool. Initial use can become proficient in a few weeks. Advanced use will take at least six months. Typically your MS Excel power users will learn Spotfire quickly. The creative aspect of data visualization comes with experience. Recommend reading some Edward Tufte, Stephen Few, or any other the other data viz gurus. Spotfire v7 makes it easier to select appropriate data vizes with its Recommendations engine, but it won't build a properly flowing dashboard/report.
