TIBCO Spotfire® is a data visualization platform that utilizes predictive analytics. In addition to data viz, it includes data wrangling capabilities, predictive analytics, location analytics, and real-time streaming analytics. and FairTIBCO Spotfire is being used across the whole organization, and it encompasses several departments. The product allows us to utilize our current databases to create visualizations to easily depict data.,Allows for easy creation and utilization of data visualizations. Coupled with property controls that allow users make various selections and changes to variables, this functionality allows creating pretty robust 'what if' scenarios. Such has multiple applications ranging from price analysis and price development to budgeting to cash flow to engineering. Spotfire is very good at data transformations and enrichment. This allows aligning multiple otherwise disparate data sources and analyzing data from those data sources side by side and on the same view. That in turn provides deeper insight into data. Spotfire offers a wide range of formula types including statistical formulas that allow for high degree of customization and flexibility in building visualizations and/or logic. This in turn again allows getting more insight into/from data.,Combination chart does not allow stacked bars along with a line. So, if the user does stacked bars i.e., based on one column but broken down with the column's individual values by color, then the line is not possible to do. The statistical table of the box plot visualization, though very useful and customizable, cannot be formatted and the default formats aren't based on the columns' formats either. Data transformations, though extremely useful and critical for data alignment for multiple data sources, cannot be changed once implemented for a data table. If changes are due, the entire data table must be re-done. There are multiple bugs that either unexpectedly shut down a Spotfire session or otherwise interfere. For example, if a data table has data transformations and columns inserted from external tables and if such a data table is embedded then it may become un-refreshable. Sometimes, that can be corrected by selecting "Linked to Source", saving the file and re-opening. But sometimes, it becomes un-refreshable for good, meaning that the data table must be re-done from scratch. If a column that is being used in any expression or as a matched column is deleted, the entire data table becomes embedded and will have to be re-done from scratch. There's limited functionality to personalize visualizations with colors, shapes, fonts, etc.,9,,9,In the first year of the usage of analytics developed on the Spotfire platform, we're expecting over 500-600% ROI, which is pretty hefty. Can easily integrate with data sources, for example, connecting directly to databases. Makes it easy for a user to spot trends or outlying data and identify it. Empowers user with the ability see the data in a different way and make decisions.,Out-of-the-box, Spotfire does not do actual data analysis well, meaning it is really not meant to be used for complex calculations of data. Requires a 3-tiered architecture (Oracle Database, Application Server, and thick client) for setting up. It does not have a strong curve-fitting engine.,10,10,This is too difficult to measure in a pharma research environment.,In-person training Self-taught,10,In my opinion, it is not a good idea to give this application to a user without training. In a previous review, there is a comment that this application has a short learning curve, but that reviewer is an engineer. If you are technical and are good with data analytics tools already, it should be easy to pick up. If you are a scientist whose main focus is to discover and develop pharmaceutical drugs, you don't have time to figure it out yourself. I find that at least the basic fundamentals of Spotfire need to be shown to most new users first to get the most out of the product.,1000,20,In the pharmaceutical research industry, the application can be used for viewing experimental results to spot trends or ask specific questions against assay data to make decisions going forward on research projects. Also I’ve seen it used it for reporting of results, dashboarding for project progress tracking. It could also serve as a search tool against a database. Data visualization of large data sets. pharmaceutical research. Drilling down to answer questions against data. My main job function is to train users on the fundamentals and also how to use any custom tools built in house for Spotfire.,N/ARobust data engine & standardized visualizationsAs a field consultant I deploy TIBCO Spotfire, develop data visualization reports/dashboards/templates, and provide on-site training and mentoring. Most of my clients use Spotfire as an enterprise reporting solution. I have also helped the vast majority of those same organizations deploy ad hoc analysis environments. The ad hoc use cases are typically inter departmental analysis projects.Almost all of my clients select TIBCO Spotfire for it's ability to easily visualize data, merge disparate data sets, scale across an expanding enterprise, and handle data loading in a variety of methods. Additionally, I work with a large number of clinical research and life sciences firms who have read about the growing number of Spotfire extensions (custom add-ins) that are geared specially to their industry. This level of customization generates a great level of interest in Spotfire.,Data transformation. Pivoting, un-pivoting, aggregation, and numerous other data transformations can be achieved through a simple "Information Link" GUI or through custom SQL. Additional transformations, joins, calculation expressions can be achieved within the client as well. Standardized visualizations. Spotfire provides all of the typical types of visualizations (bar charts, scatter plots, tree maps, geo, dashboards, etc.) in a clean standard format that is easily recognized by users. Strong SaaS capabilities. Strong web-player out of the box that can be embedded and manipulated in your own site. Robust use of data structure. Spotfire provides a range of options from importing spreadsheets to connecting to existing databases. Data can be merged within Spotfire via the GUI, pushed to the database, or return select data sets based on user actions. Simple web and client interface. Intuitive interface for users and visualization report developers. Visualization options are limited for the sake of standardization Depth of reporting capabilities. Simple enough for a casual user to develop simple reports, but powerful enough data transformation and calculation expressions to build complex reports. One the greatest improvements with the latest versions of Spotfire (v6 and v7) is its ability to load enormous data sets. Spotfire was already the industry leader as an in-memory data visualization tool (as well as a hybrid data on-demand method), but it now supports numerous "big-data" data connections. This allows Spotfire to push demanding data processing into the database and return only the necessary metadata to build a visualization. Visual user interface customization has improved dramatically with the latest Spotfire versions. Version 6 allowed for much more custom HTML/CSS/Java Script to produce unique visual solutions. Version 7 took that further by allowing a GUI (point and click) to modify nearly the entire user interface. Essentially you can alter the UI to the point that Spotfire begins to look like any webpage you like.,Error handling. The data engine and expression builder have almost no organic error handling or troubleshooting capabilities. Program errors, while minimal, are vague and appear spontaneously. Training for data transformation user interface. On-site and online training for visualization report development is good, but data engine training is minimal at best. Flexibility of visualization design. Design options are very limited and are not as powerful as Tableau or MS Excel 2010+. While version 7 has provided extensive flexibility in modifying the user interface, the amount of flexibility in adjusting data visualizations is still limited. Auto-save or version control. There is no auto-save or automated version control. The client will crash sporadically and all work is lost since the last file save. Progressiveness of visualization designs. Spotfire lags behind its competitors in the range of visualization types and the options available to manipulate the current visualizations. Standardization of design controls. Report authoring options that you would expect to be ubiquitous are not and those that are available are sometimes found in different locations. Resource hog! Spotfire requires a good deal of memory, processing power, and efficiently tuned data sources. Spotfire v7 is especially demanding on memory and processing power. All versions will demand efficiently tuned in database sources. Poorly tuned databases will become a bottleneck in performance. Upgrading can be challenging if you have custom extensions or Spotfire reports using complex operations (eg. large in-memory data, large number of tabs, complex logic, multiple data sources merging, etc.),9,,SQL Developer, VMware User Environment Manager, Amazon Web Services,10,In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.,10,9,External and internal revenue growth. SaaS program has been developed using Spotfire. Internally, any employee has the ability to quickly develop reports by tapping into enormous data sources. Rapidness of reporting vast amounts of data. Reports are easy to construct, publish, share, and update.,994900,359623,Mobile reporting. The current Spotfire mobile solution is half-baked and the existing Spotfire data visualizations do not represent well on mobile devices. The data visualizations display satisfactorily on tablets.,SaaS / enterprise product. Spotfire is used to visualize data and then published over the webplayer. This allows any user to see their clinical trials' progress in near real time. Internal reporting. Any employee can tap into any formal or ah hoc data source within the company and quickly develop their own visualization reports. Spotfire has seen use in nearly all facets of the company. Standardize reporting throughout the company. Much quicker than Excel and much easier to produce clean, standardized reports.,We built a SaaS program that allows internal and external clients to dynamically load their specific data and monitor the progress of their clinical trials. Pre-filtering capability allows users to jump straight to their pertinent data set. This also helps manage load times when dealing with massive data sets. Changes the way that status meetings are held. A proficient user can pull in live data and answer questions as they are asked. Updating a report to a client's question as they are asked builds trust and engagement.,,Vendor implemented Implemented in-house Professional services company,10,Online training In-person training Self-taught,8,7,The basic visualizations within Spotfire use a drag and drop GUI that can be mastered by anyone. Anyone with a moderate level of MS Excel and/or SQL experience will easily grasp the data expressions used in the visualizations. Mastering the data engine requires an understanding of basic data structure and basic SQL. Developing complex reports that are efficient requires creativity and a high level of persistence that borders on stubbornness. I recommend that a visualization developer take the "boot camp" online course and sit down with Tibco for one or two ad-hoc courses on the data engine.,8,9,9,8,Integrated into a portal environment to support SaaS product,YesInsight into TIBCO SpotfireI have helped Oil & Gas clients in implementing several Drilling, Completions, Production, Surveillance, Reserves and O & G Accounting Use Cases. Some of these analyses help users analyze near real-time data; others are previous day or weekly/Quarterly/Annual data. Spotfire is a very robust tool, pulling lots of data with less columns ,makes no harm and gives ideal results.,Spotfire has a great Geo Analytics platform where Geo-coding is automatically performed from version 6.0 and complex geoanalytics problems can be solved in combination with the Tibco Enterprise Runtime for R (TERR) engine, if the company has R language expertise Spotfire has some cool inbuilt functions available through which we do not have to do manual calculations like Total,%Cumulative Sum,YOY,MOM QOQ kind of stuff, and lots other functions which make life simpler Iron python scripting is an advantage but, of course, tricky initially if you do not have experience, but it can simplify users' lives if used properly Scheduled updates and caching. If we are trying to get the dashboards up in a flash , this feature is useful One more important thing in the latest version, is the business author piece on the web player where business users can develop their own stuff on Web, this is a good start and hope to see this developed further Spotfire is coming up with new Mobile Metrics platform, i.e. it is responsive on mobile devices Also there is a new KPI chart which can be very useful for Executive reporting.,Customizability on the Analyst end: Spotfire is a good tool, but there are a few points where it should improve. I cannot hide an object like a tab or visualization r Data Load speed at the analyst level, I somehow feel when i try to load data in the analyst level it loads slow and while using at webplayer because of the schedule updates it runs fast. I know there is the caching concept, but it is unlike QlikView whichgives a great performance with the desktop version as well. I would expect the same to happen here,9,,8,We have more than 800 users and user types mainly include Analysts who develop the dashboards, CIO Office, Metric Managers, and field executives.,9,8,8,Self-taught,yes it was easy to learn, but the advantage of working with a different BI tool, you can get hold of this too fast, over a period of time there were hurdles but we used to have intermediate sessions from the company on the new features and releases, there is also a lot of webinar series organized by the company, joining them once a month solves many technical problems.Ofcourse there is the TIBCO forum, where most of your encountered problems are already discussed. Users can change filters on the fly, and get their answers in no time. One visualization can cater to different types of user roles. A Store Manager would be interested to see store level details; an area manager would want to see all stores under his area, and likewise for Region/Zone managers. We can create one visualization that shows summary based on what level users choose from drop down - store or area or region or zone. One can compare trending for sales of a product across all states, for example, by breaking down a visualization by state using the Trellis feature of Spotfire. Defining hierarchy levels in Spotfire is very easy. One doesn't need to do any dimensional modelling, or build cubes for this.,Checkbox Filters: Filters just trigger report refresh the moment there is a change is list of values. This sometimes become painful in case of Checkbox filters. Suppose there are 10 values in a checkbox filter, and one wants to view data for only 3 out of 10 values. The moment one unchecks a value, spotfire starts loading the data. There is no way to control the loading/refresh of data only after all 7 values have been unchecked.,Managers are able to plan ahead for any staffing needs at a store. Target v/s Actual reports gives them great data about how the business is doing.,10,10,100,3,Some reports are built to show trending of different financial parameters, e.g. targets vs actual. Essentially we access big data from other systems like Bloomberg databases and then end users analyze this data to make business decisions. We have two or three dashboards are active for capital markets decision making. Spotfire can access databases and build dashboards very well. Performance is good, because the data is cached. There are also excellent statistical tools. Visualizations are generally good.,Scheduling and Distribution: Tools like Business Objects or Cognos have excellent distribution mechanisms. Tibco Spotfire does not allow you to distribute a report directly. You have to first create an XML file and then distribute it. It's possible to see and open the reports, but it does not have scheduling flexibility like other tools. Excel Export and Enterprise support: Most people use Excel to analyze data but it's not possible to export the data to an Escel format.,9,The data analysis we perform allows us to make better trading decisions. This is sometimes an issue when, for example, I want to be able to see data for March and April on the same tab. It''s not possible to have different views of the data on the same tab. I have to build two tabs. Formatting of charts with labels. If I want to put percentage labels on charts (for example, conversion or click rate percentages) it works fine on the X and Y axes, but there are no controls for attaching the labels to individual data points like individual bars in a bar chart. Web preview of the reports: When I build a report using the desktop client, it doesn't always look exactly the same when viewed through the web viewer. For example, if a chart is compressed in the desktop client, it will be significantly more compressed when viewed through the web viewer and is sometimes impossible to read. I have to go back and forth between the desktop client and the web viewer to figure out how big a chart needs to be before it is easily readable on the web. This is sometimes frustrating.,Reduced turnaround time for reporting. Improved quality of reports. Accelerated decision making.,10,10,20,2,We use Tibco Spotfire on behalf of clients to analyze data to help make marketing decisions. We use to tool to analyze impressions, offers, click-through rates, conversion etc. as a decision-making aid. The main use case involves the following. Delivering reporting through web browser. Creating complex views with different filters on multiple tabs. Delivering datasets for further manipulation.,,Don't know,Self-taught,Yes. I use the existing manual to learn,7,10,10,Netezza,N/AHighly intuitive visualization capability.Spotfire is a very intuitive design tool. It’s very easy to manipulate X axes and Y axes to build visualizations. The tool does not have a heavy learning curve. It’s also well-designed in that once you learn one thing, it’s quite easy to use that knowledge to do something else. The UI is quite consistent. Once you know one thing, it’s easy to do other things. Marking visualization components and filtering for drill-down into the underlying data are very intuitive and easy to understand. The tool is also very easy to customize. For example, the SDK allows for custom visualizations. Ease of use though is primordial. We did not want to deploy a tool that was so difficult to use that we would not get any internal adoption. The primary goal was to bring in a product that could be used by people of all different skill levels and would be widely adopted across the organization.,On the back end, when designing visualizations, actually getting data into the product can be a bit esoteric. For a technical person, writing SQL queries is relatively straightforward. But the product has been designed for less technical users. All users are forced to use a GUI which is poorly designed and very difficult to use. The Information Designer (used for setting up data sources and creating information database queries) is the weakest part of the product and needs to be redesigned. Data volume. Ours is a very data-intensive business. We produce Terabytes of data. This huge volume of data is not always practical to pull in. The desktop version of the product loads all data into RAM and not on disk which can be problematic. Obviously, it can only load what data your physical machine has resources for. Once you have all the data, of course, it’s very easy to filter and drill down and the product works very well. The problem is the hard RAM limit. Tableau works around this problem by doing some smarter caching so that you are not pulling everything into RAM. This is not really a problem for sales, but for engineering where the volumes of data tend to be very large, the overhead can be prohibitive.,Ease of use. It’s very easy to get something running quickly – very little wasted time. Queries are re-usable. Every time a query is constructed, it is available as a reusable module of SQL. This is particularly useful for Sales which is often looking at data sets which are a slight variant of an earlier query. This is very efficient and again is related to speed to information. 4.5. is a very stable product with very few glitches. The product has come a very long-way (earlier versions have been far less stable). The Web Player in particular was once very buggy and unstable, but is now rock solid.,10,8,100,Engineering groups use the product primarily for data pipeline validation. In addition to the standard platform, we also use Automation Services and Web Player. Automation Services. This is a scheduling tool. You can use it to automate a series of steps such as: Open report / Send email to individuals / Save report back to library. Web Player. This is a web-based version of the tool for consuming reports built by others,,,Implemented in-house,10,Self-taught,I rolled out training internally: There are two separate versions of training: o Designer training for the desktop version concentrating on back-end SQL o Basic training for the Web player for less technical staff,We did some basic Iron Python scripting (C# code). The business reason for this was related to automating tasks, rather than really extending the application functionality. For example, we animated some visualizations. Most of the custom work we did was to make it easier to navigate a report.,No,8,9,10,8,We have hooked the Web Player up to our Intranet by loading it in an iFrame on our Intranet page.

The only issue that I have encountered is if the program crashes, which is not often, or the laptop dies, there is not an auto save feature where the user can pick up where they left off.

Even though, it's a rather stable and predictable tool that's also fast, it does have some bugs and inconsistencies that shut down the system. Depending on the details, it could happen as often as 2-3 times a week, especially during the development period.

The Spotfire client is very reliable. There are sporadic crashes that are made worse due to the lack of an auto-save. Most product upgrades are uneventful. The one major issue we experienced was quickly responded to by Tibco. Our system admins have indicated that the Spotfire servers and the ancillary web-player systems are reliable, but requires time to learn how to deal with the unique nature of the web player and resource loading.
