Users of WebFocus have found it to be a versatile tool for generating reports and analyzing data. It is widely used across different departments and projects within organizations, including sales, healthcare, marketing, procurement, and R&D. One key use case is the creation of dashboards and executive reporting, which enables key business individuals to build and manage information solutions effectively. Additionally, WebFocus is utilized for generating scheduled reports tied to releases and independent time-triggered reports, making it easier for users to access real-time data in graphical form.

WebFocus addresses the challenges of generating and handling reports efficiently. With its HTML pages, users can select parameters and run queries quickly and easily. The ability to generate custom reports in various formats such as HTML, Excel, or PDF provides flexibility for different users' preferences. Moreover, the integration with Oracle as the backend database enhances the reliability and performance of fetching data for display in reports.

Another notable use case of WebFocus is ad-hoc analysis of data, providing meaningful insights for analysts and executives. This feature allows users to perform predictive analytics using the new version 8 of WebFocus. Furthermore, it serves as a central business intelligence solution for consolidating transactional information from multiple countries, improving data quality and providing valuable insights for decision-making.

Overall, WebFocus is well-regarded by users due to its user-friendly interface, efficient report generation capabilities, support for various data formats, integration with Oracle as the backend database system, and its ability to fulfill diverse use cases across different departments within an organization.

WebFocus is used across the organization. It is used for Sales dashboards and to give various departments reports (ReportCaster) and graphically displayed real time data. It is very convenient in how it can connect to any data and reports can be generated very quickly and are easy to debug. HTML pages make it easier for users to select parameters and run queries faster.
  • Great technical support - If you have a question or issue they will get back to you very fast and get it resolved. Never had a problem with their support.
  • I can get ANY data I want from practically any source, read it, filter it and display it quickly in a report, graph, etc...
  • I love the way LDAP is used in WebFocus 8 to grant user access. We use this through portals, folders, etc... This way if a user is in a certain LDAP group or groups they have access and can see and run certain reports. If not, they can't see anything.
  • I love the ability to completely customize reports, graphs, dashboards, portals, etc... We can finetune anything to any data and present it in anyway we see fit and do it quickly. Far quicker turn around then SAP Crystal Reports or any other comparable BI platform.
  • Very high reliability and uptime. No other BI product comes close. It's basically set it and forget it. It runs like a tank.
  • The admin console can be a little confusing for new people, but it doesn't take long to figure out where everything lives and how it works.
It is well suited for just about everything that I have seen or run into. There are some cases with data from sources like Essbase (Hyperion) and other sources where you may need an adapter, but IBI has adapters available for just about everything you can think of. I also love the ability to run either straight WebFocus code or SQL code.
No comparison. Both have their strengths, but WebFocus comes out on top as the clear winner because it is so easy to use and understand for power users. Crystal Reports, like most BI tools, requires more extensive training and is not as easy or user friendly. It is more reliable as we rarely ever have any downtime. If we do it is due to a user running a bad, corrupt report repeatedly. This would cause issues with any BI tool. It is an easy fix - delete the aborted process before it brings down other reports and services and you are good. Very easy to maintain and debug.

We have a maintenance agreement which covers all support. That means we have access to local techs and to their support through IBI. Both are very knowledgeable and very helpful. Regardless of the problem, IBI's staff has worked with us relentlessly to get the problems solved and find a solution.
They have extremely knowledgeable techs that I have worked with over the years. Some have actually become really good friends of mine. I see them often at local user groups and when we show them how we are using their tools to save millions of dollars throughout the company.
Yes
Yes it was. Every application will have bugs and issues that will have to be worked out. WebFocus has been one of the least "buggy" applications I have had the chance to work with to date. We had a bug where reports being made in InfoAssist were not able to see more than one table from a reporting object. This was remedied by rebuilding the reporting objects with a slight configuration change. Then everything worked as it should have. WebFocus support was there for us and still is whenever we need them.
I think it is pretty much every time that we deal with them that they do. Mitch, the local tech, is outstanding and usually gets back to me the same day with any emailed question. He will quickly either help me fix it or route me through to someone that has more experience in that area that may be able to help us get it fixed quicker. I have never had bad support from them.
  • Report Caster was simple to learn and setup. We have hundreds of scheduled reports that run through ReportCaster every morning.
  • Creating dashboards with the portals that are tailored by department and loaded with key metrics is super easy and fast. I can build heatmaps, bubble maps and more in a matter of seconds. There is no other BI tool that can access the large data that we have and display it like this in such a quick and easy manner.
  • None really. Upgrades take some time for planning and testing, but this is the same with any application. If you are a large company with a lot of data then there is no such thing as a worrisome free upgrade. If you do the right planning, test appropriately and then do the rollout in stages it all goes fine. The only hiccups we hit was with customizations and porting over old code. Some old reports didn't work or needed to be rebuilt. Minor things like that.
Yes, but I don't use it
Best BI tool/product I have used. The others don't compare overall. Some can look fancier, but when you actually use them with large data and data from numerous systems/sources that is where most of the competition falls away. I also don't like downtime. I have basically none for a large user base with WebFocus. Even SAP Crystal Reports went down for 4 days once - 4 days because the admin password got locked out due to a glitch and we had zero reports for 4 days. WebFocus has never had more than a few minutes of downtime. It's like a tank that just keeps rolling. There is no other choice for reliable BI.

WebFOCUS is used across the organization as a user development tool. Its purpose is to allow departments an easy way to design, create, schedule, and distribute reports and data stored in various types of tables. It is a tool that users are able to install themselves with an instruction sheet and pretty quickly be able to connect to and report from various data sources with a minimal amount of training for the amount of ability of the tool.
  • Allows users to connect to and combine data from various sources
  • Allows users to create HTML launch pages even if they don't have previous experience in developing web pages. Users can tie a launch page back to a report that they wrote for their workgroup to share data access.
  • Saved queries can be scheduled to send the results so that data is automatically emailed in various formats (text, spreadsheet, Word document, etc.) as often as needed.
  • Exception reports can be scheduled so that the necessary person is emailed only when needed.
  • The newest versions of WebFOCUS have an unnecessarily complicated security layout that makes configuration difficult to accomplish without bringing in the vendor for installs.
  • This software tries to cover too many bases allowing you to switch from writing code manually to creating reports using only GUI tools. This sometimes complicates screens and functionality where the two methods don't always work well together. -though its nice to have the choice.
  • The sales force is not as top notch as many software companies
The cost and configuration make WebFOCUS more appropriate for organizations where there are multiple developers/users. This software is particularly good in cases where you have multiple data sources in varying types of databases where you need to be able to reach them (and even combine data) using one tool. This tool is able to format results to a higher degree than the average query tool.
  • Business Objects SRC,Crystal Reports
Business Objects -WebFOCUS is more centered towards the user accessing data without an administrator setting up reporting objects or setting rules on data access. Access is more free form and allows the user more freedom (for better or worse) to design and create the report they want.
Crystal Report -WebFOCUS is more intuitive and easier to use and has more powerful capabilities.
This software is deeply engrained with my organization and has become a tool that would not easily be replaced without spending more money and resources to get the same results. License cost is comparable to other report writing tools and the capabilities are greater than the competition without having to buy multiple apps to do the same thing.

To support this tool it requires an in depth expience with it and a working knowlege of the operating system it is installed on, webservers and some html, working knowlege of conneting to data sources that will be used. Query writing skills and concepts of efficient ways to configure and assist users to make good queries.
  • Additional mobile reporting with the html5 capability.
  • Report Library would be useful at storeing required documents and version control.
  • Visual analytics in the newer version look promising.
  • Finance getting regularly scheduled reports and documentation
  • Operations getting near real time batch exception reporting
  • Marketing seeing trends and customer information
  • Sourcing accessing stock levels and purchase orders
  • alerts going out to pagers by utilizing phone to text combined with exception reporting
  • writing to tables in batch processes
  • automating information updates such as webpages
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was minimal
  • Security in the newer version is complicated on how to access secured data though the scheduler.
  • Good data with proper indexes on a robust database are necessary for efficient reporting.
  • Getting users that have not seen the software before started requires some initial training.
Plan ahead on what data will be accessible and the type of security required on the database and if you will want to use security that is built into the software. It is worth consulting with the vendor on what your plan is and how they recommend you proceed in order to get results you are happy with.
It's hit and miss, the last class was overcrowded and people were having trouble connecting which took up much of the time. Instructors vary
Yes
We use premium support that allows access to local representatives and the ability to open tickets with the home office. The home office tickets are assigned a severity level and are responded to based on that; I rarely use the highest level, but it gets fast response. Tickets will go to an expert in the area and they can call or even WebEx directly to your PC.
For some areas the local office will not have the expert in the area available and the answer will have to come from the main office. This is not a big deal, but can mean waiting on a call/email from the expert that they notify of the ticket. It is a private company (not small but private) so your tickets can lead to changes in the next release of the software.
No
When we were doing the last upgrade, which was a major change, Information Builders sent a representative out to come on site and help with the install at no change. Local reps will share their email and often their cell numbers to be available to fix any issue that may arise. Many of the reps have years of experience with the product/company.
  • Drag and drop functionality on creating a report
  • Formatting a report with fonts, colors, size, output formats
  • Point and click webpage design
  • Joining tables
  • Customizing connectins between reports and webpages
  • Going back to GUI after manually editing a report or vice versa
Yes, but I don't use it
It's a complicated tool, but it's able to perform more reporting functions and do a better job at it than any other tool on the martket that I've seen. I technically savy person who has never used it before can be getting some reports out in the first day and the tool with grow with you as you need to do more complicated tasks.
