We are doing implementation of the Information Builders WebFocus to our clients. We do installation, configuration, migration, upgrade, development, administration, and maintenance of WebFocus to our clients. We do it for the whole organization.

It is simple to use and easy to convert from legacy or any existing bi product. User will get a detailed overview about the data in a quick time.
  • You can integrate WebFocus with any platform. It works well with SAP, Salesforce, etc.
  • WebFocus has a great charting capability. You can see most of the charts you found in Stephen Few. It will give you a good overview on your data.
  • Most of all, it is simple to use. You can build your own report in a quick time. It's interface is easy for the user to understand. Most of them are drag and drop. The new version offers the users to build their dashboard in 5 minutes.
  • In the new versions they have done lot of code tightening and they want the user to do drag and drop mostly. Developer should have the ability to modify the code in the UI tool. That is very much restricted in the new version. Of course there is a way to do it but you need to be an expert to find it.
  • Adding version control is a bit of challenge. Would like to see that made a bit easier.
  • As like any other product it might have some missing functionality but that will be resolved by integrating other technologies with WebFocus. Like the way, you integrate JQuery with WebFocus and get most of the UI updates.
I always recommend users to use an expert at least at the initial stage of setting up the environment. If your initial setup is not done correctly then you won't get the value out of this product. You need to have an expert who can provide you the output you want.

We always make sure the client is getting what they want from this product. This product can offer more and you need to know how to utilize it. Otherwise you will feel this is just ananother product in the market.
Haven't used any and not even think of using any. We are very much satisfied with WebFocus.
It is a great product. It is providing the value for the license we are paying.

WebFOCUS is used across the organization as a user development tool. Its purpose is to allow departments an easy way to design, create, schedule, and distribute reports and data stored in various types of tables. It is a tool that users are able to install themselves with an instruction sheet and pretty quickly be able to connect to and report from various data sources with a minimal amount of training for the amount of ability of the tool.
  • Allows users to connect to and combine data from various sources
  • Allows users to create HTML launch pages even if they don't have previous experience in developing web pages. Users can tie a launch page back to a report that they wrote for their workgroup to share data access.
  • Saved queries can be scheduled to send the results so that data is automatically emailed in various formats (text, spreadsheet, Word document, etc.) as often as needed.
  • Exception reports can be scheduled so that the necessary person is emailed only when needed.
  • The newest versions of WebFOCUS have an unnecessarily complicated security layout that makes configuration difficult to accomplish without bringing in the vendor for installs.
  • This software tries to cover too many bases allowing you to switch from writing code manually to creating reports using only GUI tools. This sometimes complicates screens and functionality where the two methods don't always work well together. -though its nice to have the choice.
  • The sales force is not as top notch as many software companies
The cost and configuration make WebFOCUS more appropriate for organizations where there are multiple developers/users. This software is particularly good in cases where you have multiple data sources in varying types of databases where you need to be able to reach them (and even combine data) using one tool. This tool is able to format results to a higher degree than the average query tool.
  • Business Objects SRC,Crystal Reports
Business Objects -WebFOCUS is more centered towards the user accessing data without an administrator setting up reporting objects or setting rules on data access. Access is more free form and allows the user more freedom (for better or worse) to design and create the report they want.
Crystal Report -WebFOCUS is more intuitive and easier to use and has more powerful capabilities.
This software is deeply engrained with my organization and has become a tool that would not easily be replaced without spending more money and resources to get the same results. License cost is comparable to other report writing tools and the capabilities are greater than the competition without having to buy multiple apps to do the same thing.

To support this tool it requires an in depth expience with it and a working knowlege of the operating system it is installed on, webservers and some html, working knowlege of conneting to data sources that will be used. Query writing skills and concepts of efficient ways to configure and assist users to make good queries.
  • Additional mobile reporting with the html5 capability.
  • Report Library would be useful at storeing required documents and version control.
  • Visual analytics in the newer version look promising.
  • Finance getting regularly scheduled reports and documentation
  • Operations getting near real time batch exception reporting
  • Marketing seeing trends and customer information
  • Sourcing accessing stock levels and purchase orders
  • alerts going out to pagers by utilizing phone to text combined with exception reporting
  • writing to tables in batch processes
  • automating information updates such as webpages

No
Change management was minimal
  • Security in the newer version is complicated on how to access secured data though the scheduler.
  • Good data with proper indexes on a robust database are necessary for efficient reporting.
  • Getting users that have not seen the software before started requires some initial training.
Plan ahead on what data will be accessible and the type of security required on the database and if you will want to use security that is built into the software. It is worth consulting with the vendor on what your plan is and how they recommend you proceed in order to get results you are happy with.
It's hit and miss, the last class was overcrowded and people were having trouble connecting which took up much of the time. Instructors vary
Yes
We use premium support that allows access to local representatives and the ability to open tickets with the home office. The home office tickets are assigned a severity level and are responded to based on that; I rarely use the highest level, but it gets fast response. Tickets will go to an expert in the area and they can call or even WebEx directly to your PC.
For some areas the local office will not have the expert in the area available and the answer will have to come from the main office. This is not a big deal, but can mean waiting on a call/email from the expert that they notify of the ticket. It is a private company (not small but private) so your tickets can lead to changes in the next release of the software.
No
When we were doing the last upgrade, which was a major change, Information Builders sent a representative out to come on site and help with the install at no change. Local reps will share their email and often their cell numbers to be available to fix any issue that may arise. Many of the reps have years of experience with the product/company.
  • Drag and drop functionality on creating a report
  • Formatting a report with fonts, colors, size, output formats
  • Point and click webpage design
  • Joining tables
  • Customizing connectins between reports and webpages
  • Going back to GUI after manually editing a report or vice versa
Yes, but I don't use it
It's a complicated tool, but it's able to perform more reporting functions and do a better job at it than any other tool on the martket that I've seen. I technically savy person who has never used it before can be getting some reports out in the first day and the tool with grow with you as you need to do more complicated tasks.

IBI WebFOCUS was used for generating reports, dashboard. It's Report Caster was used to generate scheduled reports tied to the releases as well for independent time triggered reports. WebFOCUS was used to generate Custom reports for displaying the reports in HTML,Excel or PDF format. The backend was Oracle wherein the code to fetch the data was at the backend. In Webfocus there was a call to these Oracle packages/procedures to get the data from backend to display it on the reports. WebFocus was used only in my project and other departments as well. Being a reporting tool itself webfocus addresses the issues of generating/handling reports, generating dashboards very efficiently. It allows business users to perform predictive analytics with the new version 8, it allows you to generate scheduled reports by writing code in WebFOCUS fex files.
  • In Predictive Analytics. Allowing users to do predictive analytics after analyzing the fund data.
  • Allows users to create a dashboard.
  • Help users in integration with different technologies like Java, Oracle,SQL Server etc.
  • Its ReportCaster allows users to generate independent reports
  • They can penetrate more into handling unstructured data by using Big Data as far as i know they only handle relational databases like Oracle etc.
  • The Interface is not that attractive, so they can work on making a good interface. The interface i used was very old fashioned. They should really work on adding different themes so that users can create their own attractive dashboards.
  • I found out difficult to get the material on the net. So please work on making the product user friendly.
Being a reporting tool it will find place in most of the organizations as reports are generated everywhere. All banking, finance, IT, telecom, internet, services, government organizations etc, every department requires reports on a daily basis. I think that they should expand their business in the market as i am sure many organizations do not know this product. Also I believe this product will find a great scope in market if advertized properly. More people if they use it, more people can give more inputs which will help them to improve the product.
  • Oracle forms and reports, tableau, sql server reports
I found WebFOCUS a great tool for reporting purposes as I have used it for a long time. They should compare themselves with new reporting tools like Tableau and Splunk. Tableau's interface is mind blowing. IBI should learn from Tableau and how they have penetrated the big data market - I especially like the interface and its drag drop facilities. As I said WebFOCUS is a great tool but they need to work on it more to make it the best.
I have seen demos of WebFOCUS version 8 but haven't used it more. It looks more promising than the previous versions like 6 and 7.

Many different projects use Webfocus for reporting purposes. They represent teams who work on financial data. Its analysis, analyzing the returns, analyzing the portfolios, anlayizng the share holder data. Creating dashboards, creating scheduled reports tied to releases. creating custom reports in different formats. Using reports in Prod and DR environments.
14
Atleast 14 people in a team on 100 knows webfocus. I mean the development part of it. There are equal number of business users for testing.
  • Creating reports
  • Custom reports
  • Report Caster
  • Integration with different technologies
  • Security, Adminitrative privileges
  • Creating different dashboards for Fund data
  • Creating scheduled reports tied to MM, CSCP, ICF releases
