What is Titania Nipper?

Nipper discovers vulnerabilities in firewalls, switches and routers, automatically prioritizing risks to an organization. Its virtual modelling is designed to reduce false positives and identify exact fixes to help users stay secure and compliant.

Audits: Firewalls | Switches | Routers

The vendor states that from analyzing the configurations and interactions of network infrastructure with the expertize of a skilled penetration tester – Nipper’s accuracy can save Network Administrators up to 3 hours per audit, per device. Instead of spending time investigating false positives of non-compliance, Nipper enables users to dedicate valuable resources to analyzing and prioritizing fixes by providing:

  • Visibility of actual network vulnerabilities including existing false-negatives
  • Significantly fewer false-positives to investigate
  • Automated risk prioritization
  • Precise remediation with exact technical fixes
  • Flexible, configurable easy to read reports
The software helps users accurately identify risks in network infrastructure and provides precise remediation, including command line fixes. Users can customize Nipper's best practice audits or analyze networks using ‘out of the box’ industry compliance standards (such as the STIG, CIS, PCI DSS benchmarks).

Titania Nipper is used in our organization to scan the network of clients, more precisely the routers that comprise those networks. The results of the scans are used to analyze the vulnerabilities and possible threats for our clients and also prepare a detailed report in order to proceed further to an action plan of mitigation in order to stay secure.
  • Easy to use tool, with a low impact in network traffic.
  • Support from the vendor (for any enquiries or problems).
  • Quick in creating the reports that we need.
  • Licensing costs are low in comparison to other solution/vendors.
  • Not very clear what security standards are used during the audit.
  • Room for improvement for more OS support.
  • Needs to add more firewall support, like for NextGen FTD firewall.
The tool Titania Nipper is used as a way to improve compliance and risk management, reduce time to market and also provide our customers the needed insight about the possible threats to their network and firewalls. The tool itself we use in conjunction with others, so I can't recommend using only Nipper if a more wide view is needed in terms of vulnerability assessment.
  • The speed for creating reports that we use.
  • The cost of the license.
  • Intuitive interface and easy of use.
  • On a positive Reduce time to market
  • Cost management
  • Improve customer service
  • Qualys Web Application Scanning (WAS)
Although Nipper from Titania helps in auditing accurately every device in the network and helps in prioritizing the fixies, it is really useful for the part of the firewall in a network and also for the quick making of reports which are also customizable. But from our experience, the Qualys solution for scanning the networks, although is more costly, it also has more features and options in regards to assessing a network and the elements connected to the network, though it is also somehow less powerful when it comes to creating quick reports. Qualys has a more interface and dashboard approach regarding the results of the scans.

Titania Nipper is being used in my department to execute configuration audits for our clients in our engagements, which comprise vulnerability assessments and penetration tests. The reports created by Titania Nipper allow us to have a quick overview of issues in some of the target networking equipment and ideally helps to create our actionable report for our clients.
  • Updated database of configuration issues
  • Particularly good at Cisco equipment
  • Quick overview of issues and conclusions
  • We definitely need support for a wider range of smaller vendors of equipment
  • Better summary of conflicting access control lists would help
When critical networking gear, such as a main firewall needs to be quickly audited.
  • Support for some of the industry leading fire walling gear
  • Quick overview of configuration issues allowing us to rapidly audit equipment
  • We seldom audit the same equipment twice, hence the fixed amount of annual hosts is not very flexible in terms of licensing for our use-case
Titania Nipper more targeted towards configuration weaknesses of networking gear
