We currently use Tridion to support 2 websites, desktop and mobile site for healthgrades.com, primary it is used to target content on our website.
  • Tridion does a great job at supporting multiple websites in the enterprise
  • The ability to have multiple environments with a single instance of the CMS.
Cons
  • The content porter is really bad, we have basically stopped using it.
  • The data connector is neat but very slow, we have created a solr core to replace it.
  • Site Edit sucks!
I would not recommend Tridion for most CMS needs, but it does really well with local variations.
  • We did not have a CMS before, so just having the ablity to add CMS add a hug ROI
  • I think there are better CMS on the market for our needs.
  • Brightspot,wordpress
Tridion's strength is really hosting multiple websites across development, test stage and production.
We are currently migrating to Brightspot CMS

Tridion was used to support a former client, we assisted implement and manage their CMS platform. Their challenges were managing a content hierarchy, preview/publish content targets and needing support for a technical solution integrating various technologies.
  • Tridion gives you full capability to build content pages through the use of their component sections that can be used as a building block approach.
  • The publishing pipelines were very effective when dealing with various environments of dev, qa, staging and production.
  • I found the internal newsletter management to be very helpful to customer and engagement outreach right within the CMS platform.
Cons
  • I thought the upgrade process was a little involved going from one major version to another.
  • Additional Cookbooks could also improve implementation and development of the later versions of the CMS
Tridion is a true enterprise CMS, if your organization is well suited for the cost and the ability to capitalize on managed content and make use of the various tools available then its a great investment. Key questions would be size of organization, budget, licenses, etc.
  • Tridion allowed our client the ability to Multivariate test/personalize the web experience which was hugely effective for donations and memebership
  • EPiServer
Tridion again seemed to be more enterprise level then EpiServer, EpiServer allowed for faster ramp up time of a intuitive .NET framework, but Tridion seemed to have more tools and overall functionality once the CMS was customized towards the needs of the customer.
This is a fair rating for accessing an organizations needs based on a renewal of the license fee, upgrades, ect.

SDL Tridion, good for Multi-brand companies, not for everybody else.

SDL Tridion is a great content management software, if your needs are to manage lots of sites, with translated content. I chose Tridion for a rather large company to use for its 500 plus brand websites. The blueprint model made it an ideal choice to share modules but still maintain an distinct look and feel. Tridion helped leverage the concept of reuse and shorten the time to create new web properties across different brand experiences.
  • The blueprint concept is great, helps facilitate the sharing of code and content.
  • Separation of content and presentation makes it easy to share content across multiple properties, even publish to mobile and gaming platforms a possibility.
  • Workflow and the workflow Visio tool is very powerful. It can be used for various customizations.
  • Content Porter, is your friend and at times can be a pain, but mostly it's your friend
  • Moving between environments, dev, qa, uat and production is simplified.
  • Oh that Broker db.
Cons
  • Installations, do you have a month. I'm joking, but yes it is quite complicated to install SDL Tridion and its many parts.
  • Personalization with Smart Target, requires a PHD in software science. The integration between the products is just not there.
  • SiteEdit 2012 and the new Tridion UI, is a bit outdated. The UI can use a little help from a user experience perspective. It is not tablet friendly.
If your company is managing lots of websites, and would like custom Content Delivery Applications for them, then SDL Tridion is the right tool. Perfect for companies like Unilever, Kimberly Clark, Kraft, where the brand experience is unique however, costs need to be managed. Do not use Tridion if all you have is one or two website manage.
  • SDL Tridion has a positive impact as it was used for a multi-brand company. The leverage model saved lots of money in managing code and content. People were not spending time recreating code and content.
  • Adobe CQ
Adobe does a great job in managing sites. Its user interface for authors is intuitive and leaps and bounds better than SDL Tridions new 2013 UI. The ease of install and management makes Adobe CQ a much better product. However, Adobe CQ (AEM) has limitations. It cannot scale as well as SDL Tridion does when managing content in the MM of pages. Also, it forces you to use the CQ UI. If you want to create different experiences and leverage code, it becomes difficult, but still do able. In general, i would recommend Adobe CQ over SDL Tridion for almost all companies but the large multi-brand companies.
It's a complex sum of pieces, that takes forever to install and manage.

We use SDL Tridion as the content management system that supports our enterprise-level website. The Web & Interactive team manage the website information architecture, design, content, and strategy using SDL Tridion in support of the organization's online goals and marketing campaigns that drive traffic to our website. W&I are able to extend access to Tridion to individuals in various departments across the organization so that they can author and edit the content on their department-owned sections of the website, allowing them to make changes to the content on their pages as needed with minimal assistance.
  • Our organization was able to customize the implementation of SDL Tridion so that it would fit our unique needs for a CMS; it is flexible in this regard, and we are adding new elements all the time to fit changing requirements and marketing goals.
  • The user interface for SDL Tridion is very clean, and easy to use. This makes it easier for users with less web experience to navigate and use the CMS tool.
  • SDL Tridion integrates well with our back-end organizational systems and applications, making the customer front-end experience seamless, and our back-end processing as smooth as possible.
  • The search tool is really helpful when you have a lot of content to manage. We use the search feature all the time to find things we need if we don't immediately know where it is stored; it is a major time-saver.
Cons
  • Tridion is complicated in enough ways that it makes it difficult to train new users. Therefore, we have to limit the number of people with access to the system since we have not yet implemented Workflow.
  • When something goes wrong (items fail to publish, or there is unexpected behavior with components), there is little explanation provided that would point us in the right direction to troubleshoot. As a result, content Authors and Editors have to frequently ask for IT assistance.
SDL Tridion works well for organizations with a large website with a lot of content to continuously create and manage. The use of page templates and component presentations makes creating new pages fairly straightforward. It can be a little cumbersome when it comes to trying to "break from the norm" and build web pages that are outside of the template-driven format; however, there are ways around this to create pages that break away from the normal page-template format of the website. In this regard, SDL Tridion can be pretty flexible, allowing us to create a lot of custom functionality to keep up with constantly changing web trends.
  • As an organization, we have been able to try out a lot of new marketing ideas as a result of moving to SDL Tridion for our CMS needs. Our previous system was extremely limited in its capabilities, and now we have a lot more freedom to do what we want on our website.
  • Our Web team has grown, both in number of employees and overall knowledge and experience, as a result of our increased agility and web capabilities. Our technical expertise has expanded and our organization supports efforts to grow our online channel.
  • We have been able to reduce the number of micro-sites that we manage, opting instead to move content over to our main website since we have increased our web capabilities.
9
Our organization has invested a lot into the implementation of SDL Tridion, and it's not likely that we'd abandon it in favor of another system anytime soon. We did a lot of research prior to choosing SDL Tridion to make sure that it was going to be a good fit for our organization; we are confident in our choice.
