We use Turbonomic to monitor and help manager our vmWare environment for our organization. It allows us to best utilize our hardware to ensure the best possible performance for all of our users while at the same time getting the most possible use out of our hardware. Turbonomic has allowed us to use fewer Host servers but at the same time allow the users the best performance by choosing which servers aren't being used to their full ability and which are being over used. It monitors and lets us know when to move a virtual machine to a different host with more resources if needed or vice versa in the case where we don't need as many resources. Turbonomic also has the capabilities of automating the entire process. This allows the network team to concentrate on other projects because Turbonomic will continue to keep our vmWare environment consistently running at its best.
  • First and formost its monitoring ability allows you to see the resources your virtual environment are using.
  • It also provides suggestions for best performance and can automatically execute those when needed.
  • Another awesome feature is the ability to plan for future virtual machine deployments. Turbonomic will allow you to see before creating the new vm if you need to purchase new hardware for a host or if your current hardware can support the vm without impacting current systems. This feature alone can save a ton of money for any business.
  • There's not anything I can think to say bad against Turbonomic. I mean I guess it could be free, but then again with the money it will save your company it realistically pays for itself.
The only thing I can think of in which I wouldn't suggest Turbonomic to a colleague would be in an a small business situation in which very little hardware is even used. I consider it more of a midlevel to enterprise level product.

We use VMTurbo Operations Manager on two different Horizon View Clusters comprising 34 total ESX Hosts. One of the clusters uses a VMAX storage backend and we bought VMTurbo initially to try and level out the storage contention and stabilize performance. We also have a McAfee security scan that kicks off every Monday afternoon and wreaks havoc on the environment. VMTurbo Operations Manager has helped to aggressively move the VMs from one host to another to balance out the CPU/RAM loads when everything pings 100% during that 3 hour period. Obviously we need to move to hypervisor scanning eventually but VMTurbo Operations Manager is an excellent bandaid in the meantime :) We also use VMTurbo Operations Manager on our new cluster running on Pure Storage all flash and we use it primarily to resize VMs based on usage. We have a variety of different users and some require more CPU/RAM than others. We no longer have to manually resize these VMs. It's entirely automated and makes my job a whole lot easier :)
  • Balances the workload across the cluster.
  • Resizes VMs according to usage. Users no longer call us to request that we increase RAM from 3-4GB, etc.
  • We use the scheduled reporting quite a bit and the number of built-in reporting templates is awesome.
  • I would like to see a bit more information around the reasons why VMTurbo Operations Manager chooses to move a VM from one host to another or one storage LUN to another (especially when it's all FLASH and nowhere near capacity).
It is especially useful when you have a cluster of ESX hosts with varying amounts of RAM or CPU capacity. vSphere DRS just can't make intelligent decisions around these types of moves where VMTurbo Operations Manager excels at it.

We are currently using VMTurbo Operations Manger to manage our 3 vSphere clusters across two data centers. It has been a great help with balancing cluster utilization, vm resizes and capacity planning. I had always used VMWare's VDS but VMTurbo's recommendations are far superior.
  • Capacity planning is great.
  • Automation of vMotions and resizes.
  • Application control/monitoring for SQL and Oracle.
  • I would like to see more details in the application control modules, I know it's not a full replacement for a monitoring product; but one plane of glass would be good.
  • Sometimes I don't fully agree with some of the placement and resize recommendations that it gives me.
  • The planning piece can be a little overwhelming at first but the more you use it the clearer it becomes.
VMTurbo is a great replacement/upgrade to VMWare's VDS; and it is much easier to use and understand compared to VMWare's vRops. It is simple to get up and running and can provide function return in less than a day.

VMTurbo Operations Manager helps us address issues before they happen. It helps us with deploying new machines to make sure we have the proper specs for the required new system.
  • Great at planning new system installs.
  • Great at giving you insight to your environment and making recommendations on how to get better performance out of it.
  • There isn't anything that I can think of right now.
We use VMTurbo Operations Manager in our entire virtual environment.

As a skeleton team with a limited budget and increasing demands, I've looked for solutions that will assist me to get most of my virtual environment without spending more on expensive hardware and licenses, And also minimize hand work, monitoring the system, leaving me more time for other tasks, VMturbo cost us a fraction of the price we planned to pay with adding more server and the vmware/microsoft/veam licenses and gave us the breathing gap we needed,
  • Keeping the system in check
  • Keeping the hosts and storage balanced
  • Accurate alerts when needed
  • I would like to have a smartphone app with relevant data, to help me monitor while i[m on the go
  • Adding support for other virtualization environment (oracle VM, citrix)
As I see it, if you have VMWARE environment, this tool is always recommended

VMTurbo Operations Manager is currently in use for our production systems. VMTurbo Operations Manager has helped the IT department automate some functions that required manual intervention. The time saved has allowed us to focus on priority projects and has given us an insight into how the virtual systems can be better optimized for the highest performance and reliability. By analyzing workloads and predicting possible resource contention and problems, VMTurbo Operations Manager has brought our optimization to its highest point which otherwise would have required someone to monitor VMware 24/7 with minor results compared to VMTurbo.
  • Automated tasks. VM and storage moves ensure the best placement for resources.
  • Risks and Opportunities. It can alert you to changes you may need to make to keep the environment running at its best. It will track the usage history and behavior of objects in the system to give recommendations.
  • Planning. Can be used for "what if" scenarios. It can be used to simulate what would happen when you make changes to the environment.
  • I would like to see, if it's possible, the ability to configure settings of hosts and VMs through VMTurbo Operations Manager.
VMTurbo Operations Manager seems better suited for medium to large environments with dozens of hosts and hundreds of VMs or more. It's most useful to users who want to spend less time micromanaging their environment. It is also useful for those who need powerful reporting tools that can generate reports covering all details.

We use VMTurbo to right size our new VMs. We also use VMTurbo to move VMs to the host that will best provide CPU and RAM to the VM. We have gained further knowledge of how we can improve our VM performance and where to add resources as well as planning for the future.
  • Workload placement, using trends from your own environment.
  • Deployment placement for new VMs/Applications.
  • Planning for the future based on trends and what you are planning to add.
  • The ability to drill down to automation of tasks from the Dashboard where it advises you of something that needs to be done.
  • Take into consideration what VMWare licenses you have and not recommend something you cannot do on your licensed version.
  • Recommend removing host profiles that are already in place so that VMTurbo and VMWare do not fight over where to place a workload.
So far it seems that VMTurbo has fit a niche market that has been neglected by the native applications. It suits its purpose very well and brings added value to VM hosts that are underutilized. It also brings justification for adding hardware in the event you are over prescribed.

It is a great product that was introduced to us by one of our value-added resellers. VMTurbo Operations Manger makes managing our complicated VM clusters easier and helps us balance our workloads. If you have multiple physical VM servers then then VMTurbo Operations Manager is a must.
  • Balancing the work loads! No worrying about server overload, having VMTurbo Operations Manager manage the workloads.
  • We have several large scale VDI projects going on, VMTurbo Operations Manger helps us manage these environments - fewer servers more resources.
  • It definitely helps with budgeting, less servers are needed, frees up more resources.
  • Resizing should know the history of the server, the day of the week and the time of the day.
VMTurbo Operations Manager is well suited for reducing the cost of servers - less servers because VMTurbo Operations Manager manages everything better.

We are monitoring our host loads and VM distribution, VM sizings, and performance reporting for our executive team. As far as I know, we are the only department using the product. We use VMTurbo Operations Manager to keep from over provisioning our hosts and VMs. We also use it to seek and find groups of VMs with like characteristics and publish applications to them that fit the available processor and memory availability. Our VMTurbo team is constantly coming up with new views and statistics that are needed to do the next years projected needs, it's a great forecasting tool.
  • Ease of dashboard navigation.
  • Seems to have a small footprint on resources we want to be using for our computing, not monitoring.
  • Technical support, and forums have been a great resource. Nothing we run into has not already been found, and the good search engine allows us to use the web for our support and not taking up time calling for help.
  • It could use tags from Vcenter to create custom dashboards.
  • Windows authentication for SQL database queries.
  • Like Vsphere web client, flash is not the most secure application.
  • No refresh button, if you refresh, you have to log back in.
We are getting more integration into new features with VMware. If they put something out, I would love to see VMTurbo Operations Manager know it, and address it within the product so I don't have to go elsewhere, or create users outside of a normal active directory environment.

VMTurbo Operations Manager is being used by our IT department to monitor resource consumption and provide recommendations on how best to utilize these resources.
  • Rightsizing - Provides recommendations on actual VM consumption and what resources are actually needed.
  • Reporting - We are able to generate custom reports and deliver them to our customers.
  • Planning - We can accurately plan for future growth by using capacity planning tools.
  • There are a lot of components and it takes awhile to understand everything that is going on.
For an entire solution to your management needs, VMTurbo Operations Manager is well suited. Being able to do rightsizing, capacity planning, chargeback, reporting and more in a single solution makes it a necessary tool for us.

We use VMTurbo Operations Manager to manage our vSphere cluster that hosts the server workload for our organization. It provides load balancing across the hosts in the cluster using different metrics than DRS (VMWare native functionality) and automatically vmotions machines as appropriate to keep the cluster load evenly distributed while respecting the pinned workloads that we have defined using affinity rules. We also use it for planning purposes which has allowed us to achieve greater density without the guess work of how much load is too much for existing resources.
  • VMTurbo Operations Manager identifies resource constrained servers (those that need additional vCPUs or RAM).
  • VMTurbo Operations Manager identifies over provisioned servers (typically those where the application owner or vendor has spec'd too much RAM).
  • VMTurbo Operations Manager provides a tool to show the impact of various changes in workload or in host count to the overall environment.
  • Because of their supply chain and relative weighting, a host can be shown as "critical" when in fact it is just out of balance a little. The application can be tuned to overcome this behavior to a certain extent.
  • This is a tool for use by admins, not end users, and so the user interface is sometimes very text and information heavy. For some people that might be a problem.
  • In the past the active directory authentication options were non-trivial to configure and required manually creating user accounts in VMTurbo to match those in the active directory you wanted to use. I haven't looked at it again in the current version but it would be nice if it could use groups instead of individual users and if those groups could be pulled from active directory without recreating them in VMTurbo.
  • No support for Nimble storage as of yet.
VMTurbo Operations Manager works very well for planning scenarios. It would be useful for organizations that are very budget constrained, so that they could get the most use out of their ESX cluster(s) while having a tool that would protect from too much over commitment. I found it not useful for our VDI environment where all the hosts have a roughly equal (high) number of desktop VMs and all the hosts run at roughly the same memory/CPU usage.

We use VMTurbo Operations Manager in our Global VMware farm, which is used by potentially 55K employees, to ensure we can provide not only the levels of service they expect but to also preempt any issues before they become a problem.
  • We love the fact that VMTurbo Operations Manager is a true plug and play appliance. From downloading the software to having it up and running took no more than 30 minutes.
  • Clear and concise displaying of critical information which allows easy drill down to really see what is going on.
  • VMTurbo has some of the best support people that I have ever dealt with, their knowledge is very evident and they can really deliver the support needed very quickly.
  • Sometimes the interface can be a little busy, almost too much information can be displayed which can distract from what you are looking for.
We find that VMTurbo Operations Manager is a great tool for giving us a top down view of our entire environment and to allow rapid analysis/resolution of issues through automation. When an organisation has a very tightly controlled environment (due to regulatory requirements) then the automation would most likely not be used which would result in the full value of the tool not being used.

Right now we have a service catalog request to review VM performance on a machine by machine basis. This allows us to focus on customer pain quickly and easily make judgement on next steps to resolve issues. We also use it to help justify our cost model by efficiently assigning resources to virtual machines while minimizing performance impacts to the environment.
  • The reporting and recommended actions are solid and actionable while showing true value to the business.
  • Automating optimization tasks keeps my staff sleeping at night while waking up to a fine tuned environment.
  • Finding bottlenecks and creating what-if scenarios is truly valuable and helps us forecast environment growth.
  • I can't stand the use of Adobe flash in the product.
  • A simplified view like vCenter web client provides would simplify navigation for new users.
Making sure the metrics are understood by team members using tool is absolutely critical. Also make sure that whatever tool is chosen, make sure you are happy with the results. I've seen it too much where a tool is purchased and not used because it is just painful to navigate or you have confusing/unexpected results.

VMTurbo Operations Manager is being used across our whole organization. VMTurbo helped us during our migration from a non converged physical and virtual infrastructure to a converged virtual one. We used the capacity planner to determine what we needed by way of compute, storage etc., based on current usage as well as projections for future use and were able to successfully migrate off our old infrastructure without any issues whatsoever. Before we purchased VMTurbo Operations Manager, we used to rely solely on historical data as well as stakeholders of the systems for system specifications. Oftentimes systems were over-spec'd. With VMTurbo Operations Manage however even when systems are over-spec'd, after a period of learning, the environment it is able to provide recommendations to help with right-sizing the environment to enhance efficiency.
  • Capacity Planning: The capacity planner is a very useful tool to determine if your environment can sustain the growth taking place in the company. It can also help to efficiently use resources by providing information as to which resources need to be commissioned or decommissioned. For example what-if projections from the capacity planner can show that at the current rate of growth your hosts will not be able to support the VMs being deployed and based on that you can make decisions as to when and how many hosts to provision to match your growth.
  • Optimizing resource use: After learning about your system VMTurbo Operations Manager provides recommendations that are geared toward assuring service performance and improving efficiency of your systems. Not all recommendations are 100% accurate because as we all know there are certain times of the year when systems are taxed more often and without having learned about that time of the year VMTurbo Operations Manager may make some recommendations to lower resources on those systems. We found out that if you increase the period of time that VMTurbo Operations Manager keeps its data from polling and calculation it makes much better recommendations based on much more accurate and extensive data.
  • Reporting: The reporting module for VMTurbo Operations Manager is very robust and you can create just about any report from any view you have. Also, in the event that you are not able to find a report, support is always available to help you come up with what you are looking for. There is also a robust community that helps with creation of reports and just about anything you may have questions about.
  • Add-on Modules: Everything I have already mentioned comes out of the box. However if you invest in the add-on modules that VMTurbo provides you get more in-depth information about your environment. This is because those modules are written for the specific applications, VMs, and hardware in the enterprise and because they poll your VMs, storage, etc. directly and make recommendations based on that determination it makes managing your environment that much easier.
  • There are times when after an upgrade certain functionality breaks however I must say that when notified VMTurbo is quick to resolve the issue. Other than that I have no issues with any of the modules I have used so far.
In my opinion VMTurbo Operations Manager is suited for every environment. When it comes to the add-on modules certain organizations may not be interested in getting them because they provide more in-depth information about resources used in the environment. Out of the box VMTurbo Operations Manager already does a very good job so not everyone may want to invest in the add-ons.

VMTurbo Operations Manager is used across all of our production VMware clusters. We have disabled native VMware DRS migrations, favoring VMTurbo's methodology for balancing. The reason we selected VMTurbo Operations Manager was to maximize our host server investment to move towards a higher VMware density level. We are using it to balance workload on our host servers, recommend hardware changes, and forecast future scale and workload.
  • The market based model for resource utilization drastically improves the workload balancing amongst our hosts. Trusting VMTurbo to just do things correctly took us some time, but in the end we have much more balanced resources usage.
  • The recommendations provided by the tool for right-sizing VMs are excellent. I used VMware vCenter Operations previously and it did not provide clear action items, instead relying on your ability to determine the best course of action. Our environment does not allow us to act immediately upon these recommendations or automate them, but we log the information to make recommendations during the next maintenance window.
  • The modelling and planning tools allow us to understand what hardware and licensing needs we will require as we scale our environment for predicted growth. The ability to use reference VMs for this scaling makes the forecast more accurate.
  • Policy assignment is flexible but in some instances counter-intuitive. Knowing the best way to enact a change requires some thought.
  • Storage DRS requires more in-depth product knowledge. It does not recognize storage clusters by default and without this knowledge you may be letting VMTurbo make very bad recommendations.
Users with higher density environments that are looking to eek out every last available cycle will benefit from the market based economy. The deployment tools are fairly basic - and someone with an environment that allows for the automatic provisioning of VMs for demand may get ever more value from the software.

VMTurbo Operations Manager is being used across our organization to help automate our VDC environment. It assists us with our capacity planning and reporting, and adds another layer of metrics for us to put into consideration. I have been very happy with what VMTurbo Operations Manager has brought to the table, and helped with my day to day duties.
  • DRS and SDRS optimization.
  • VM capacity planning and reporting.
  • Deal review planning.
  • Report layout.
  • Custom report flexibility.
  • Plan customization.
I believe this product is very helpful if you have many or large VDC implementations. It takes away alot of the manual work that is required to run a VDC. If there is a need to constantly add or remove VMs, their planning features takes away a lot of the uncertainty and work to organize large VM builds.

VMTurbo Operations Manager helps us keep our VDI and server clusters balanced based on load demands for compute and storage. It handles vMotions 24x7x365 without any interactions from technicians. It helps us utilize our physical infrastructure to the fullest. The other main issue it helps us resolve is giving users and servers the compute and other resources they need when they need it and then reduce them when they are not needed.
  • VMTurbo Operations Manager does a great job of keeping inventory of all VMs and where there is congestion.
  • Sometimes VMTurbo Operations Manager gets a little too happy on some recommendations like provisioning storage when it's not needed but you can make adjustments to either ignore or reduce those alerts.
  • The planning tool is great as when we have large projects adding multiple servers or desktops to the environment it lets us know if we are ok on resources or need to look at adding resources. If you put in some valid pricing numbers for your infrastructure items it does a good job giving you an idea of what the cost will be as well.
  • One of my main complaints has been identifying VMs based on OS and being able to put caps on VCPU and RAM based on the OS and if it is a 32 bit or 64 bit setup. By doing that you can ensure that the VM does not get more than it needs based on what the OS can handle.
  • The deploy tool is clunky and we find it easier to still just deploy items from vsphere as it is quicker then going through the deployment tool.
  • The layout of the Supply Chain can be confusing at times. I think the navigator could use better representation of each item instead of just colored blocks.
  • You have to purchase VMTurbo Operations Manager per core of your ESXi host and that is a true money concern when you start moving past 5 or 6 hosts in your environment.
It helps a small tech group better utilize their time troubleshooting slow VDI desktops and servers because it already sees where demands are and adjusts the vms based on the demands and recommendations. I personally think that VMTurbo Operations Manager is suited for any VM environments as it is able to see all VM related infrastructure from compute to storage.

The product is being used between two groups at the Office of Physical Plant at Penn State University. The product eases the strain of little resources to manage two large VMware infrastructures. We currently have several tasks automated to maintain performance and efficiency. We are beginning to utilize the Capacity/Planning functions to address our current growth rate of the storage system. As the supervisor, the reports help me make decisions on where we need to be in the next year, including budgeting.
  • Dashboards - The dashboards allow you to get quick glances at key aspects you are looking for. Being able to customize your our dashboards allows you to pull the information that matters to you.
  • Automation - The automation of tasks reduces the time my staff has to spend manually moving or adding Memory/CPU to VMs. This has allowed our system to be setup more dynamically and not wasting resources on VMs that don't need them.
  • Historic Data - Being able to compare how the system performed last month to this month has enabled us to evaluate upgrades and priorities. It also allows us to gain insight to growth and potential issues.
  • Training - We have had multiple training sessions with engineers and there are still functions in the system we do not fully understand that may be of value to how we do business.
  • SRM Support - The system seems to lack the ability to understand a hot DR site and makes recommendations to suspend underutilized systems.
  • DRS Rule Updates - There seem to be delays in reading new or changed DRS Rules, this sometimes causes vCenter and VMTurbo Operations Manager to compete and make multiple moves to a VM.
  • HA Conflicts - We had a scenario where HA was trying move VMs because of a network failure but VMTurbo Operations Manager was trying to move the VMs at the same time for performance. It created a storm of vMotion traffic that brought the hosts to a crawl. This wasn't a direct problem with VMTurbo Operations Manager but can be a gotcha when automating tasks.
It really depends on the issues you are trying to resolve within your environment. We don't just utilize VMTurbo Operations Manager for all our needs with managing/maintaining a VMware infrastructure. For us we needed to reduce some of the daily/routine tasks that could be automated and not require constant attention. With a limited staff, we don't have a person that we can dedicate to watching our VMware Infrastructure. VMTurbo Operations is that extra employee looking at VMware and making proactive decisions to keep the system running in a healthy state. It can also notify us of potential situations that will require human intervention or escalation.

We use VMTurbo Operations Manager to manage our virtualized workloads by providing us in depth analysis of resource usage trends to determine when and where we would run into problems down the road. VMTurbo Operations Manager's automation capabilities allow me to run lean in our department, saving the company money and my sanity. The major problem VMTurbo Operations Manager solves for us is understanding our virtual environment better, allowing for better future planning through the capacity planning module and shows us (or in most cases, automatically dealing with) pain points and problems in our infrastructure. It's like having a Swiss army knife for your datacenter.
  • VMTurbo Operations Manager's predictive algorithm is like VMware DRS on steroids.
  • Capacity planning makes datacenter expansion planning easy (now if I can just get the BUDGET!).
  • Easy to read and customizable dashboards allow you to see what's going on at a glance, no need to spend hours digging through logs!
  • The GUI is Flash based... Get with the program and make that HTML5 already so we can get rid of Flash!
  • So many options that it can be overwhelming at first.
  • RAM resource intensive virtual appliance.
VMTurbo Operations Manager is good to use with any virtual workloads. If you have to keep performance up and end users happy this is a great tool. It saves me loads of time each week and peace of mind while I sleep.

We leverage the capabilities of VMTurbo Operations Manager across our entire VMWare environment to assist with diagnosing issues and automatically implement changes based on recommendations from the software.
  • Diagnosing issues, and providing corrective recommendations.
  • Supports VM Host capacity planning.
  • If enabled, the software will correct issues it finds in real-time without user intervention.
  • Doesn't provide detailed information across the entire VMWare stack (ie. virtual networking, vStorage etc.)
The product handles very specific tasks in regards to VMWare, but does those very well.

This product is used by our SaaS Operations Team to optimize our virtual environment. Within the first week of using VMTurbo Operations Manager we were able to decommission two unnecessary hosts in our VMware environment, and have since decommissioned a third host. That brought us immediate cost savings, as we are currently in a hosted environment where we lease our equipment. It allows us to more efficiently use the hardware and eliminate congestion on hosts.
  • It immediately makes suggestions for improving the efficiency of our hosts. We can see where VMem or vCPU are being over or under utilized, and make changes where it makes sense.
  • We quickly decided to allow VMTurbo Operations Manager to make the changes it suggested to assure service performance. This is what allowed us to remove three unnecessary hosts from one data center for immediate cost savings.
  • It gives us the ability to create our own dashboards. We have found the existing dashboards to be quite helpful, but having the ability to create new ones will allow us to see other aspects of the environment.
  • It seems pretty easy to use to me.
For us it wasn't about asking questions. We set up the demo/trial in our environment, and let it go. The comparison of installing vROps and then installing VMTurbo Operations Manager made the choice a no brainer.

We are a global service provider in the cloud space and utilize VMTurbo Operations Manager across each of our virtual instances. We place significant value in the role VMTurbo Operations Manager plays in ensuring performance, up-time and application availability for our customers and would recommend it to anyone running a virtualized environment either internally or public facing.
  • Balances out the workload among the hosts in the cluster much better than DRS can.
  • The reporting feature is much more robust than those native reports in vCenter.
  • Being able to plan what our environment will look like after adding or removing hosts from the cluster is invaluable.
  • The historical data, it would be better if the historicals didn't round out over time like they do, it's important to have accurate and detailed historical data when looking at an issue from weeks past.
  • Storage migrations. We need a do not place policy as well as a placement policy for groups of datastores. It is important to have the ability to natively have a source and target group of datastores for moving vmdks from one storage pool to another.
  • More intuitive dashboards. We should be able to add items to the dashboards, like the entire tier of storage for a cluster.
Service providers don't ever reduce RAM or CPU from VMs; out of the box VMTurbo Operations Manager wants to reduce resource allocation which is incredibly inappropriate for a cloud provider.
