Good Service Weak Team

We use Twillio for 2FA and also customer service touch point messages. Our site handles thousands of 2FA requests per day and a large number of sms Customer Success messages. We have used Twillio for over 3 years.
  • The API is well documentated and easy to get up and running
  • The service is reliable
  • The service is fast and effective
  • Customer Care is poor in my experience. They begin most customer issues by turning your service off. It takes a long time to get connected to the right person to fix your problem
  • I feel the worst team at Twillio is the 'Compliance' department. They are the epitomy of Success Prevention.
  • I believe Billing is ridicoulous - Be ready to see your business accounts spammed with hundreds of small one off payments making your normal business accounts unreadable.
Great Technology Weak TeamWhen we started using Twilio 4 years ago, it was the clear leader in terms of API capability and integration into our web facing aps. Sadly every touch point that requires interaction with a person to resolve is a sad 'success prevention' in my experience. To give you some example of how you will be treated if you decide to use their service, be ready to learn about simple problems by seeing your account throttled to uselessness as their first measure followed by an email telling you they have done it and then expect 2-5 days of trying to find a person who can actually get things back up and running. If you don't expect to need to interact with the Twilio team, then I would say this is the product for you! But if you think customer service might be needed occasionally I would run away from them as fast as possible.

We use Sendgrid to send high-volume email marketing campaigns that are automated in nature. Its reports and analytics help us keep track of deliverability and email performance. Its template library is a widely used feature in my organization.
We chose Sendgrid in place of Mailchimp because of the robust reporting and the integrations it offers. Needless to say, it offers one of the best data security in the market.
  • Helps send bulk emails with good deliverability rates
  • Robust analytics and data reporting
  • Mobile and desktop friendly
  • The UI can be improved and made more user friendly for the beginners
  • The slab based pricing and the features associated can be improved. Basic plan doesn't have a lot of key features.
  • Detailed product documentation will be really helpful
If a business has a requirement to send bulk emails at scale, then Sendgrid is the best option available. It will generate a positive ROI for the company. However, if your business is small or you do not have a requirement to send bulk emails consistently, I suggest you look for an alternative, as the money spent on the product won't justify the ROI.

We use Twilio SendGrid for transactional email delivery on our SaaS platform, in particular, we use it as an external SMTP relay from the Google Cloud Platform architecture. Our web-based application sends out notifications, for instance, when a particular document or news article is updated or when a course is completed and we then use the SendGrid API to send that notification out to each user's email address. The great thing is that we can use it as a single-pane view of all emails sent from our platform, so that we can track any issues with delivery to an email, as well as any potential problems with the reputation of our SendGrid relay.
  • Transactional Email
  • Easy to administrate
  • Logging and auditing
  • Clear error messages for our team when investigating missing emails
  • Limitation on number of API keys/sub-users
I'd say that SendGrid is well suited to both small and large businesses, looking to send a large amount of emails where deliverability and tracking is important.

I don't think it would be suitable for any company only sending a small volume of emails.

I have used Sendgrid since before Twilio purchased the business to send transactional emails to customers. We used it for welcome emails, password reset emails, MFA tokens, and general notifications. I've used Sendgrid in quite a few organizations - it's extremely easy to use and offers you the ability to connect through API or via SMTP, so it's really flexible.
  • Multiple connection options - API and SMTP.
  • Really easy to use.
  • Excellent documentation.
  • UI is very user friendly.
  • Integrated billing with Twilio.
I think Sendgrid is a great tool for sending out emails of all types. I've primarily used it for transactional emails as we've had other solutions for marketing emails, but I'm sure it would do just a good job - there is a "Marketing" section within the app you can use. Sendgrid integrates really easily with the development frameworks I've used, such as Laravel and Lumen; I've also integrated it with Moodle with ease.

My organization has been using SendGrid to cover a variety of uses. We have controlled and managed several hundred accounts, including our own, over the past several years. Personally, my experience goes back even further. Internal use: SMTP relaying for our eCommerce website (order notifications, shipping, password resets, etc...), internal systems (e.g. to send our engineering team alerts), and customer support (largely automated customer satisfaction surveys and ticket closure emails). Internal use: Email marketing to our existing customers, on a monthly basis. Client use: SMTP relaying to support our several hundred clients that needed reliable SMTP relaying for their own LOB applications SaaS use: Email API. We built and maintain a large enterprise SaaS platform that used SendGrid to send a significant amount of transactional emails to our users.
  • Decent API documentation
  • Offers free tier - easier buy-in for SMB clients
  • Customer service
  • Fraud management
  • Billing & invoicing transparency
SendGrid used to be an excellent platform, but in my opinion, it all started to go downhill when Twilio acquired them. Twilio SendGrid is no longer suitable for reliable SMTP relaying without shelling out a significant amount of cash for a dedicated IP (which Twilio SendGrid does not guarantee is clean), nor are they suitable for enterprise-level operations. The shared IP pool is absolutely unusable, which means the previous benefit of SMBs using SendGrid for SMTP relaying is off the table. They have violated SLAs multiple times, impacting both our clients' operations as well as our own, and have a history of ghosting our GRC and legal teams when trying to remediate these situations. I cannot, in good faith, recommend that any SMB, SME, or large enterprise even consider SendGrid for email services, no matter the usage scenario.

We use Twilio SendGrid in various ways and with several clients at Obra. One of the uses is focused on registering newsletters so that we can later send marketing emails to these email bases. Another use is the SMTP system, where we integrate the client's website so that it allows the sending of email from systems such as WordPress and websites in react.js
  • Great API integration
  • SMTP send made easy
  • Lists creation very useful and easy
  • Email marketing scheduling
  • API key creation
  • SMTP api
Twilio SendGrid is indicated to make integration with sites for sending via smtp in an easy and free way up to 1000 emails / month, for registration and use of submissions for monthly and weekly newsletters and automations. It is not so suitable when you need to create email tracks, create personas and other inbound marketing tasks.

We use Twilio SendGrid to build and send marketing emails. We use their API endpoints to automate a range of emails for various parts of our customer journey. We also integrate the Twilio SendGrid API into a reporting dashboard which helps us monitor our email marketing performance and formulate a strategy going forward.
  • Easy to use email builder
  • Easy to schedule email campaigns
  • API is flexible and easy to integrate with other systems
  • Sometimes animated GIF's do not load
  • Occasional formatting issues
Twilio SendGrid is probably more suited to those with at least some previous email marketing/building experience. The email builder is good but does require a little technical expertise to get the best out of it. Also setting up the backend required some technical skill. That being said the platform is very robust, stable and reliable.

We use SendGrid for all our transactional emails from our websites and through several applications we use for our clients. It solves issues for deliverability and inboxing emails.
  • Deliverability.
  • Customer support.
Despite their great deliverability and easy to use API, I'd suggest running, not walking away from this company.

We had our account compromised 7 days ago (as of June 18th). I got two emails - one notifying me that the user name was changed, and another that the email had been changed. The email says to respond to help@sendgrid.com if these changes weren't authorized.

I did that immediately. You'd think this would be a critical email and would be answered quickly. You'd be wrong.

It's SEVEN days and counting, and not a peep from SendGrid support. In addition to emailing them that NO, these changes weren't authorized and please help recover my account, I took these steps:
  • Messaged their Facebook page.
  • Responded to comments on their posts, asking for help.
  • Direct messaged them on Twitter.
  • Created a new account and submitted a ticket through that account.
  • Filled out a sales inquiry and talked directly to a sales associate, who also submitted a ticket on our behalf.
  • ALL of the above through Twilio, their parent company.
Still, we're locked out of the account, and SendGrid is still charging our credit card. We've got multiple systems tied to their platform, so we're held hostage while support continues to ignore every request.

We manage many client websites and we have found that Twilio SendGrid is vital for Email API integration to make sure that website forms are delivered to the correct client emails and not sent to the spam folder or blocked by firewalls. Many website forms get pulled as spam and that blocks the client from getting the contact and potentially losing a sale.
  • Email facilitation.
  • Seamless integration.
  • Easy setup.
  • All good, I have no issues.
Twilio SendGrid Email API is well suited for WordPress websites when the contact forms are not being sent properly to the client email. We find this more with plugins like Gravity Forms, Contact7, Formidable and pop up alley pro-forms. If the test forms are not being delivered to the client, Twilio SendGrid Email API is a well-suited solution to the problem.

We use the Twilio SendGrid Email API for sending transactional emails from our Rails web apps. Twilio SendGrid Email API's infrastructure provides us worry-free, scalable delivery and can be set up with minimal configuration.

We provision Twilio SendGrid Email API as an addon for apps hosted with Heroku, as well as use it for web apps that are hosted elsewhere. The setup is so straightforward that a developer can implement it almost immediately, without having to read deep into documentation.
  • Easy implementation for developers.
  • Reliable transactional email delivery for apps and services.
  • Reporting and analytics on emails sent.
  • Personalized service may not be as readily available for smaller businesses. If you have questions about deliverability and reputation management, you may have to learn some more of this on your own, unless you are a big customer.
Twilio SendGrid Email API is not for sending email newsletters and designing email campaigns. It is meant for transactional email. For example, when you need to send out password reset emails or other notifications from your app or service. If you want a solution that is mainly worry-free, affordable to get started with, and one that provides reporting and analytics, then Twilio SendGrid Email API is for you.

We use Twilio SendGrid API primarily for our Marketing department but regularly use it for Product, Customer Care, and Data team-specific campaigns, allowing us to drive important company KPI's and get direct from consumer feedback. The platform solves a major business needs which is sending email messages to our audience as well as SMS but to a lesser degree.
  • Makes setting up your initial account pretty simple and straight forward. You can get set up with a single list and unsub group and get going really quickly.
  • You can grow your complexity over time and SendGrid is set up really well to handle that expansion. Setting up DNS, expanding IP addresses, grouping unsubs, etc. It scales really well as your business and team grow.
  • I'm a huge fan of the API delivery which lets us set up a lot of automated actions which lets us focus more on testing and optimizing making even a lean team a super powerful team.
  • The UX isn't as intuitive as other systems and it takes some getting used to the navigation. Additionally, they're adding a lot of new features, so finding the features you're used to while figuring out the new products can lead to some confusion.
  • The documentation while expansive doesn't provide a lot of real-world use cases to help navigate through an issue. It can be a bit general, leaving you with just as many questions as you started with.
  • They don't have as many features as you'd find in some marketing cloud solutions which may have additional features. While SendGrid is making strides in this department they're not quite there yet but most likely will be more comparable very soon.
It's great if you have someone with a bit of technical know-how on the team to make sure you're getting the system set up properly, there is some degree of difficulty that you get with SendGrid that may not be present with other platforms that have focused on ease of setup. That being said, once that setup is completed the system is easy to use and you get get a lot done with a small team.

When our startup was still under ten people we needed an email solution for our users and for us to use to send automated emails. We were looking for a tool that was simple and could plug into our API. SendGrid delivered on that and we have been using it for a few years now.
  • Good API capabilities.
  • Easy onboarding and use.
  • Good support team.
  • Not as many capabilities and automation as others.
  • Basic email templating.
  • User-interface is okay, but could really be improved.
I think for a company that is small and doesn't have vast marketing or email needs SendGrid would be a good and appropriate solution. Instead of paying for an expensive and elaborate tool, you could use SendGrid till the marketing and emailing needs grow. At that point, it might make sense to switch to something a bit fancier that has better reporting and automation.

SendGrid Email API is being used as our transactional email platform. So when users or restaurants make actions (such as reserve a table) inside of our application an email is being sent out to each individual user/restaurant with details about that certain action. It's also used for easy onboarding flows for our users and restaurants alike so based on actions they take such as adding their restaurant, we send another email about how to use and open up tables.
  • Drag and drop email designer for transactional emails - super nice even though I do code, it's much quicker and easier to implement without code.
  • Very simple implementation. Only a few lines of code need to be added in our backend and boom we were up and running in less than a day.
  • Listening to customer feedback. They regularly send emails about new features and ask for feedback to improve their software.
  • Some of the cheapest and best dedicated IPs.
  • Easy integration and setup between marketing and transactional emails. Super helpful to have everything in one place.
  • Not necessarily their Email API but their email in general - they are currently in beta for automated email sequences but are still bare bones. Much more work is needed before it can be used mainstream and be able to convert everything to SendGrid.
  • Helping with warming up our dedicated IP for the best-sending score.
  • We seem to hit the promotions folder a decent amount (maybe the IP problem above) and even a lot of their emails hit my spam or promotions folder (whether they be transactional or marketing) which isn't a great sign when trusting an ESP.
  • Transactional email sequences would be a huge plus.
  • Now that Twilio owns SenGrid, having an integrated platform where you could see all our transactional emails together.
  • Better reporting and split reporting between transactional and marketing emails.
SendGrid Email API, I feel, is well suited for tech companies with smaller teams. I feel as if with a larger team of programmers, designers, etc. you may have better results with a competitor and coding things yourself. But for fast moving startups with quick implementation, nothing beats Twilio + SendGrid in those regards.

We use SendGrid transactional email integrated within our website to send follow-up emails to prospects once they complete our online signup process. This was primarily an administrative function that was automated. We were able to reduce the number of back-and-forth emails with SendGrid, and also automate the on-boarding process of our clients.
  • The SendGrid API allows you to integrate the transactional email in as custom a fashion as you wish. This enables you to make the emails dispatched very customized.
  • SendGrid also has a feature that allows you to use it as an email campaign manager. This eliminates the need to have two different solutions for email campaigns and transactional emails.
  • The pricing structure is beneficial to those who begin with low volume. The graduated pricing allows the price to grow with use.
  • The API documentation is a bit confusing.
  • All of the SendGrid services are accessible from different URLs and there's no centralized dashboard.
  • The WordPress plugin was pretty buggy.
If a company wishes to automate their onboarding process, among others, with transactional emails, I would absolutely recommend SendGrid. The pricing is fair and once you get it set up, it's pretty reliable to work as expected. Also, the emails can be plain text or HTML, and they both are spam proof.

SendGrid gives you the power to mass-email and market more effectively, regardless of your skill level. Whether you are looking to custom-build your HTML templates, or would like to build out their standard templates. Our Enterprise application needed the ability to send emails to customers and partners and track their delivery/response and action taken from the email. SendGrid allowed us to roll this out fast, cheap and frictionless.
  • Email Template feature helps me a lot. Very very easy to use and manage.
  • Easy to set up, white label URL, and get emails sending through API and marketing campaigns. Fast delivery and general reporting.
  • Drag and drop is laggy and a bit confusing sometimes and can be improved. I feel it's sometimes difficult to design emails.
SendGrid is a great tool for an emailing system. It's very easy in terms of configuration, implementation, administration, cost effectiveness, etc. There are multiple features you can set up in setting sections according to requirements. I really want to appreciate the SendGrid team for creating a user-friendly and spammer-free tool. All the areas seem perfect as of now for me.

SendGrid is used, primarily, by our development team for products that span our entire business. SendGrid allows our developers an easy way to deliver e-mail from our applications to our users without having to manage and maintain an e-mail server infrastructure internally. The tools that SendGrid makes available for the price makes utilizing their services a no-brainer decision.
  • Robust API for delivering bulk e-mails or transactional messages to users
  • Top-notch features you'd expect from any enterprise grade ESP (inbox, bounce, open tracking, click tracking, etc)
  • Powerful user interface for managing many aspects of your campaigns (email templates, user lists, etc)
  • Excellent inbox deliver-ability
  • White-labeling features that are simple to implement (to hide the fact that SendGrid is your ESP for outgoing e-mails)
  • User interface can be non-intuitive for some features
  • API Documentation is lacking in some places (but user support is top notch and responsive, so answers can be had relatively easily)
If you're building/managing custom software products that need to send custom e-mails on a per-user level, where your customizations are more than a simple mail merge (eg, first name, last name, etc), SendGrid is an obvious winner. More consideration needs to be applied if your needs aren't so cut-and-dry. SendGrid doesn't have the GUI composition tools that some other platforms have, so managing a typical marketing e-mail list is not the best use case for SendGrid. However, their API is top notch and afford you a lot of capabilities, so if you're at all building custom software and need to send e-mail, SendGrid is worth putting at the top of the list.

As a business that primarily operates through its website, we used SendGrid's transaction email service quite heavily to communicate with our users. We used the SendGrid API for event triggered emails ranging from verification emails to more sophisticated email dispatches based on user activity.

As far as how it helped us resolve business problems - it's a relatively cheap service and effectively allowed us to adopt the API that adapted to our needs at the time. It's also easy to use in terms of development and definition of email dispatches.
  • It's cost effective.
  • API is easy to use.
  • Pay-as-you-go model helps project usage costs.
  • Actually viewing previous emails dispatched. SendGrid does not have this feature - although it provides numbers on emails dispatched within 3 days for the cheapest plan.
  • The service asks you to pay more (although a minimal amount) to have visibility on email activity upto 30 days in the past.
  • The API doesn't allow an export of a report of email activity over a period of time. It can be quite frustrating at times to be limited in this way.
  • Their customer support isn't the best. Certainly some room for improvement there.
If you do not mind the lack of some historic data for your website and need something that is cost effective, then SendGrid is right for you. Keeping in mind how cheap this service really is, the pros outweigh the cons up to a certain limit.

However if having historic data, better reporting and visibility on content of past emails is important to you, then go for something else (albeit a tad more expensive). That's the compromise that you'll have to decide on.

We use SendGrid Transactional Email across several products in our organization. It's used to send billing invoices, payment receipts, and notifications of various events our customers want to know about as they happen.
  • SendGrid has an exceptional deliverability record. We never worry about emails making it to our customers' inboxes.
  • It can be difficult to best configure SendGrid, especially when setting up dedicated IP addresses and the various DNS entries needed for reliable email delivery. Settings and instructions can be spread throughout multiple pages of the SendGrid web application.
SendGrid would be my top recommendation for any company that needs to send transactional email. It's easy to integrate, with simple and well-documented APIs, and can handle whatever volume you need from day one.

[I'm] Using SendGrid to send transactional email, as well as updates and newsletters, for several websites that I control. Not using any of the advanced features of SendGrid, really, beyond their whitelisting, DNS-based security, and such. For the most part, it just works, and I don't have to think about it, which is wonderful. (I spent many years wrestling with mailman and the like; when I first switched to a dedicated SMTP server it was a revelation!)
  • Deliverability seems good. Never had any issues here.
  • Whitelabeling works well, making it appear that emails are being sent directly from the domain (no evidence of SendGrid anywhere except maybe if you dig into the email source).
  • Admin interface is clean and easy to use.
  • Prices used to be a little more flexible, starting at $1 and going up according to usage – and that included whitelisting and all that good stuff. Now they start at $10 a month although that does give you up to 40,000 emails a month. They also have a free plan (< 100 emails / day) but I'm not sure if it includes whitelisting.
  • Had some issues with the SendGrid API years ago. They probably fixed it, but I've since just used the SMTP endpoint with no issues.
I think it's great for transactional email, messages from your app, etc... anything sent from your server, *except* maybe newsletters and mass emails. For that, I'd rather use a MailChimp or whatnot. (Although to be honest I *am* using it for one client's WordPress website along with MailPoet, which ends up costing a fair amount less than MailChimp for her list size.)

We use SendGrid to send all of our transactional emails for millions of purchases, account notifications, etc., as well as for millions of marketing emails. We use it both as our own email marketing program and to power an automated email marketing software service we sell to our clients. Most of our emails are designed and then implemented to be automatic and dynamic (i.e., we don't use it for custom newsletters and we never use it for cold email campaigns).
  • High deliverability rates
  • Easy and robust API implementation
  • Cost-effective plans for enormous email send
  • Pricing can be a double-edged sword -- you can easily underpay for a plan and get hit with big overages, and you can just as easily overpay for a plan you don't need. Paying in advance is a real gamble.
  • SendGrid is for more technically proficient users. I would only recommend this program to developers or highly technical email marketers.
  • SendGrid doesn't come standard with Drip Email features (at least last time I checked). As far as I know, it's a newer feature and comes at a separate cost. In my opinion, that's a hole in their feature coverage.
Great if you're a larger company or if you have a technical team to help implement. Great if you're trying to implement a "set it and forget it" type of solution for transactional emails or notification emails. Great if you're trying to create dynamic or automated marketing campaigns.

Not great if you're a smaller company just starting out or if you're a non-technical staff. Terrible if you're just trying to send simple, WYSIWYG marketing emails.

SendGrid is used primarily by our sales and marketing teams to run mini campaigns out of Salesforce. We also use it for some member communication.
  • SendGrid is incredibly easy to use and implement.
  • SendGrid provides an inexpensive tool that the sales team can leverage for high ROI.
  • SendGrid has great support and has been willing to work with us on all our needs.
  • SendGrid is a little too basic and therefore has not replaced all the functionality we need in Marketing Cloud/Exact Target.
SendGrid features a more powerful dashboard and better analysis than other comparable platforms. It has a slightly more expansive feature set and higher limits on the free tier. Custom domain branding makes for an easy to implement solution. SendGrid provides libraries for integration in many languages and was easy to do so with excellent documentation.

We have helped a client use SendGrid to understand who his good contacts are out of his 10,000+ address database. Through SendGrid, we have sent out many emails and measured their effectiveness to understand who we should be focusing our attention on with future marketing including email campaigns and other digital marketing tactics.
  • Marketing campaign builder ease of use
  • API integrations (send emails from other applications like Wordpress)
  • Deliverability
  • They don't have a very robust template gallery
  • Very strict spam scoring
I think it's great for anyone looking to manage email marketing campaigns (our main use) as their builder is very easy to use and customize, they always deliver well, and have great analytics. I would say that if you're relying on cookie cutter templates it may not be your best choice because they have a very small inventory of them to choose from.
