Marketing email campaigns - sending to over 40,000 customers
  • To me, their spam testers seem good
  • and drag and drop editors
  • flexibility with custom fields etc
  • In my opinion, their support is terrible
  • I think their systems are broken in multiple places ( especially around support )
I cannot believe that a company this size can be so incompetent. I worked through transferring my contacts ( 40,000+) from a competitor. I had several emails back and forth with them because of technical issues with adding people to the unsubscribe list. We spent a long time setting it up and then I sent the campaign. They stopped it after sending 9,000 emails saying there is "unusual activity in your account". There was no unusual activity - they are all legit. I contacted them via support ticket. They open my support ticket each time I sent it ( I can track their emails) - but they don't reply. I cannot contact them via chat online because it's broken and I cannot even create another ticket because "something went wrong". Unbelievable frustrating and incompetent. What sort of system is this? I believe I will be changing again shortly.

My organization has been using SendGrid to cover a variety of uses. We have controlled and managed several hundred accounts, including our own, over the past several years. Personally, my experience goes back even further. Internal use: SMTP relaying for our eCommerce website (order notifications, shipping, password resets, etc...), internal systems (e.g. to send our engineering team alerts), and customer support (largely automated customer satisfaction surveys and ticket closure emails). Internal use: Email marketing to our existing customers, on a monthly basis. Client use: SMTP relaying to support our several hundred clients that needed reliable SMTP relaying for their own LOB applications SaaS use: Email API. We built and maintain a large enterprise SaaS platform that used SendGrid to send a significant amount of transactional emails to our users.
  • Decent API documentation
  • Offers free tier - easier buy-in for SMB clients
  • Customer service
  • Fraud management
  • Billing & invoicing transparency
SendGrid used to be an excellent platform, but in my opinion, it all started to go downhill when Twilio acquired them. Twilio SendGrid is no longer suitable for reliable SMTP relaying without shelling out a significant amount of cash for a dedicated IP (which Twilio SendGrid does not guarantee is clean), nor are they suitable for enterprise-level operations. The shared IP pool is absolutely unusable, which means the previous benefit of SMBs using SendGrid for SMTP relaying is off the table. They have violated SLAs multiple times, impacting both our clients' operations as well as our own, and have a history of ghosting our GRC and legal teams when trying to remediate these situations. I cannot, in good faith, recommend that any SMB, SME, or large enterprise even consider SendGrid for email services, no matter the usage scenario.

I use it with ClickFunnels. They don’t have their own mail servers to use for bulk sending to a full email list. They require an outside service to send this way and SendGrid was the option they recommended. I wanted the most affordable solution and this seemed to be it.
  • Send bulk email
  • Hits inboxes
  • Doesn’t have down time
  • I haven’t spent much time on the site but the time I did spend seemed confusing.
  • Can’t think of anything else.
  • No more ideas for improvement.
Just using it to handle email functionality it works great. I use another service for more in-depth funnel possibilities and when/if type functions. It may very well do some of this type thing but I’m not at my plan level. It’s been a hands-off tool for me which is especially good if you aren’t too technical.

We use Twilio SendGrid to build and send marketing emails. We use their API endpoints to automate a range of emails for various parts of our customer journey. We also integrate the Twilio SendGrid API into a reporting dashboard which helps us monitor our email marketing performance and formulate a strategy going forward.
  • Easy to use email builder
  • Easy to schedule email campaigns
  • API is flexible and easy to integrate with other systems
  • Sometimes animated GIF's do not load
  • Occasional formatting issues
Twilio SendGrid is probably more suited to those with at least some previous email marketing/building experience. The email builder is good but does require a little technical expertise to get the best out of it. Also setting up the backend required some technical skill. That being said the platform is very robust, stable and reliable.

SendGrid is HORRIBLE!

We used SendGrid for transactional emails.
  • Nothing.
  • Horrible customer service.
  • Their platform doesn't even work.
  • Transactional emails don't even get sent to users.
SendGrid is the worst platform I have EVER used. Their customer service is HORRIBLE and unresponsive, their site doesn't even work, their transactional emails weren't even being sent to our users, HORRIBLE!!!!! Choose any other email platform instead of this one. I tried upgrading to their pro plan. They sent me a list of questions to answer and I answered all of them. Suddenly, I received an email saying not only was I not able to upgrade to a Pro account, but they locked my free account and disallowed our company from using their platform without giving an explanation why. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with and I would never recommend SendGrid to ANYBODY.

SENDGRID DELIVER[ED] E-MAILS TO 50,000 SUBSCRIBERS *AFTER* THE PROMOTION ENDED. Not once, not twice, but EVERY SINGLE TIME. We got HUNDREDS of customers complaining they received the mail AFTER the promotion campaign ended so they couldn't use the coupon code. Sendgrid refuses to refund and doesn't care about their customers.

SENDGRID IP ARE ALREADY BLACKLISTED. Vast majority of e-mails ends up in the spam folder because SendGrid IP are flagged as spammer (their fault not mine). Because SendGrid IPs are already blacklisted it defeats the purpose of using SendGrid instead of your own mail server. Here's a screenshot of SendGrid customer support explaining their IP[s] are blacklisted: http://prntscr.com/vvftmx

NO REFUND - SENDGRID DOESN'T CARE. They will NOT refund your money even if their service failed due to their own incompetence. They even charged us excess fee of $60 and we never got refunded. Takes many days to get a reply from customer support.

SENDGRID KEEP[S] STEALING YOUR MONEY AFTER CANCELLING YOUR ACCOUNT. We finally had enough of SendGrid's unreliable service and closed our account. But SendGrid kept charging our credit card [for] 2 months. We had to contact them again twice to get the refund for the money they stole from us.

SendGrid is the only one to blame here. We don't send spam- our domain has very good reputation, we send only 4 e-mails per year, SPF/DKIM/DMARC is correctly configured, etc. The only mistake we [made] was trusting SendGrid. Don't do the same mistake we did.
I strongly recommend to NOT use SendGrid if you care about your customers. There is not a single valid reason to use SendGrid because their IPs are blacklisted and their service is unreliable. Trust me it will be a disaster for your business if you go with SendGrid, you will learn it the hard way. There are tons of reviews like mine all over the web.
  • Sendgrid misleads customers.
  • Sendgrid is very unreliable.
  • Sendgrid is good at stealing your money.
  • 50,000 e-mails delivered AFTER the campaign ended, every single time.
  • Overcharges and no refund.
  • Sendgrid IPs are already blacklisted.

We use SendGrid for all our transactional emails from our websites and through several applications we use for our clients. It solves issues for deliverability and inboxing emails.
  • Deliverability.
  • Customer support.
Despite their great deliverability and easy to use API, I'd suggest running, not walking away from this company.

We had our account compromised 7 days ago (as of June 18th). I got two emails - one notifying me that the user name was changed, and another that the email had been changed. The email says to respond to help@sendgrid.com if these changes weren't authorized.

I did that immediately. You'd think this would be a critical email and would be answered quickly. You'd be wrong.

It's SEVEN days and counting, and not a peep from SendGrid support. In addition to emailing them that NO, these changes weren't authorized and please help recover my account, I took these steps:
  • Messaged their Facebook page.
  • Responded to comments on their posts, asking for help.
  • Direct messaged them on Twitter.
  • Created a new account and submitted a ticket through that account.
  • Filled out a sales inquiry and talked directly to a sales associate, who also submitted a ticket on our behalf.
  • ALL of the above through Twilio, their parent company.
Still, we're locked out of the account, and SendGrid is still charging our credit card. We've got multiple systems tied to their platform, so we're held hostage while support continues to ignore every request.

We use SendGrid for our newsletters, for our sales funnel, and for the automated thank-you messages post-purchase.
We’ve found SendGrid to be more flexible than other solutions that we’ve tried, and the support is awesome when you do have a problem. I cannot see us changing providers. Even when they updated the system, they left all the old menus in place, so there was a choice on whether to use the improvements or not -- and there's no downtime while learning the new layout.
  • Integrating with other systems is easy.
  • Campaigns are intuitive, even for people with no design skills.
  • I got frustrated bringing old data across, and with the way GDPR was handled.
  • I find removing records to be a bit clunky.
SendGrid is better the more data you have-- there are cheaper light products available for 1000 records or less. Trying to move data between systems is problematic, however, so if the intent is to scale, I would start with SendGrid from day one. When you need a sophisticated integration across multiple marketing platforms, you’ll be glad of the functionality and support.

We manage many client websites and we have found that Twilio SendGrid is vital for Email API integration to make sure that website forms are delivered to the correct client emails and not sent to the spam folder or blocked by firewalls. Many website forms get pulled as spam and that blocks the client from getting the contact and potentially losing a sale.
  • Email facilitation.
  • Seamless integration.
  • Easy setup.
  • All good, I have no issues.
Twilio SendGrid Email API is well suited for WordPress websites when the contact forms are not being sent properly to the client email. We find this more with plugins like Gravity Forms, Contact7, Formidable and pop up alley pro-forms. If the test forms are not being delivered to the client, Twilio SendGrid Email API is a well-suited solution to the problem.

We use Twilio SendGrid API primarily for our Marketing department but regularly use it for Product, Customer Care, and Data team-specific campaigns, allowing us to drive important company KPI's and get direct from consumer feedback. The platform solves a major business needs which is sending email messages to our audience as well as SMS but to a lesser degree.
  • Makes setting up your initial account pretty simple and straight forward. You can get set up with a single list and unsub group and get going really quickly.
  • You can grow your complexity over time and SendGrid is set up really well to handle that expansion. Setting up DNS, expanding IP addresses, grouping unsubs, etc. It scales really well as your business and team grow.
  • I'm a huge fan of the API delivery which lets us set up a lot of automated actions which lets us focus more on testing and optimizing making even a lean team a super powerful team.
  • The UX isn't as intuitive as other systems and it takes some getting used to the navigation. Additionally, they're adding a lot of new features, so finding the features you're used to while figuring out the new products can lead to some confusion.
  • The documentation while expansive doesn't provide a lot of real-world use cases to help navigate through an issue. It can be a bit general, leaving you with just as many questions as you started with.
  • They don't have as many features as you'd find in some marketing cloud solutions which may have additional features. While SendGrid is making strides in this department they're not quite there yet but most likely will be more comparable very soon.
It's great if you have someone with a bit of technical know-how on the team to make sure you're getting the system set up properly, there is some degree of difficulty that you get with SendGrid that may not be present with other platforms that have focused on ease of setup. That being said, once that setup is completed the system is easy to use and you get get a lot done with a small team.

When our startup was still under ten people we needed an email solution for our users and for us to use to send automated emails. We were looking for a tool that was simple and could plug into our API. SendGrid delivered on that and we have been using it for a few years now.
  • Good API capabilities.
  • Easy onboarding and use.
  • Good support team.
  • Not as many capabilities and automation as others.
  • Basic email templating.
  • User-interface is okay, but could really be improved.
I think for a company that is small and doesn't have vast marketing or email needs SendGrid would be a good and appropriate solution. Instead of paying for an expensive and elaborate tool, you could use SendGrid till the marketing and emailing needs grow. At that point, it might make sense to switch to something a bit fancier that has better reporting and automation.

Twilio SendGrid Email Marketing is being used by our marketing team, customer service team, and our technical support team. We needed a platform that was affordable not only for storing and managing contacts but also for sending email campaigns. We also needed an email marketing tool that was easy-to-use and that offered robust features and allowed us to maintain multiple lists. Sendgrid solved this problem for us.
  • Managing email lists / audiences is easy with features like groups and segments.
  • They provide pre-built email templates that are very easy to modify. It is also super easy to create new email templates with their drag-and-drop email builder.
  • Provides clear / easy-to-read analytics of email campaigns.
  • I can easily import large email contact lists all at once or add a user manually one-at-a-time, when needed.
  • They do not offer an email signup widget for use on your website.
  • Best I can tell, I am unable to see the date/time by which a specific email address unsubscribed.
  • There isn't any social media integration for sign ups, that I am aware of.
Twilio SendGrid Email Marketing is perfect for organizations both big and small that may be on a lower budget. It is a very affordable solution for users with a large number of email addresses. While other providers may offer "free" storage for email contacts... the cost to send campaigns to those contacts can be very costly. While they do not offer widgets or other integrations for websites/social media... it is very easy to import and manage contacts. Additionally, they offer a comprehensive self-help support section online, but it's also easy to hop on the phone or on chat with a rep if you ever need technical support or assistance. Twilio SendGrid Email Marketing may not be the most affordable solution for users who are not currently sending email campaigns to their users, but are simply storing email contacts.

Our company currently uses SendGrid for all promotional and transactional marketing emails. Our marketing team designs via the HTML editor all our promotional emails, A/B tests, category stats, and segments contact lists inside SendGrid. Our backend RoR setup up the majority of the implementation - he claimed it to be exceptionally easy. For us SendGrid allows us to keep track of all our emails in one place. Rather than having one email service provider for promotional emails (ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp, etc) and one email service provider for transactional emails (Mailgun, Mandrill, etc.), we are able to have them all in one place.
  • Being a startup and going through an accelerator program in the GAN network, we were able to take advantage of SendGrid Accelerate program and leverage SendGrid training, resources, and early beta access to new products. Not to mention their dedicated IP address.
  • SendGrid has an extremely simple UI/UX. From creating emails in the editor via HTML or drag & drop, to being able to manage our unsubscribe lists and even viewing KPIs on emails and specific categories; SendGrid is extremely intuitive.
  • Compared to other email service providers, SendGrid has an exceptional deliverability rate. Being a global company and have thousands of users all over the world, we have never had an issue with delivering emails. Over 99% on all promotional campaigns and a near perfect rate on all our transactional emails.
  • SendGrid recently launched automation/sequences. While this is still in beta, they have a weird setup where you must configure your entire contact list twice to be able to put contacts through the automation. It will be interesting to see their roadmap for this product as they continue to develop the marketing side of their product.
  • I've had trouble setting up their tracking with our website via Google Tag Manager. Followed their instructions and ended up contacting SendGrid support and they said that we needed to implement the code on the actual website. Wish we could have it done with Google Tag Manager.
Being a luxury/lifestyle brand, it's extremely important that our digital products and messages all are able to use the same style, font, colors, etc. With SendGrid's HTML builder we were able to import fonts and keep our message consistent with all our other channels.

SendGrid is also extremely well suited for being able to view statistics on emails. Because of their email tagging/categories we are able to track onboarding emails, cart abandonment emails, and run A/B tests and understand which emails are working and which are not.

Our Sales, Marketing and After Sales Service departments use this software for communication purposes. For the Marketing department in my company, it is a dependable tool for promotional activities. They use it to send promotional emails to their subscribers. We use it for sending monthly newsletters to our customers.
  • It provides easy setup and easy to use features.
  • Email editor is very easy to operate for email template creations.
  • Uploading email subscribers list is very fast.
  • It lacks on multi-platform availability. We can not use it in mobile phone. Specially on Android devices.
  • Sometimes Technical support does not show activeness in resolving queries.
  • Unavailability of Email Drip functionality which is there in other softwares.
I found it very useful in promotional emails where users want to divert traffic to their websites. It ensures almost 100% accuracy in delivering your emails. It is very well suited in scheduling emails. It also allows users to schedule their email campaigns for future dates. By using this feature, users can line up their future promotional activities in advance.

We use SendGrid to send marketing campaigns to enterprise customers, transactional emails to our app users, and for one-off email sends across multiple use cases. I've found the interface for building and sending marketing emails to be very intuitive and easy to navigate.
  • The interface for building emails is very intuitive and easy to use
  • List management and segmentation capabilities
  • Customer support is very responsive and helpful
  • A|B testing and dynamic content works great
  • Campaign branching capabilities aren't as advanced as what is available in some marketing automation providers
  • Not a lot of pre-made email templates available, but this wasn't an issue for us as we build our own branded emails.
SendGrid is great for building and sending transactional emails and creating beautiful email marketing campaigns. It's appropriate for all levels of email knowledge from beginner to expert. SendGrid may not be the best bet if you're looking for a system to support multi-branching trigger or condition-based email campaigns that you'd typically find in a marketing automation solution.

SendGrid is used, primarily, by our development team for products that span our entire business. SendGrid allows our developers an easy way to deliver e-mail from our applications to our users without having to manage and maintain an e-mail server infrastructure internally. The tools that SendGrid makes available for the price makes utilizing their services a no-brainer decision.
  • Robust API for delivering bulk e-mails or transactional messages to users
  • Top-notch features you'd expect from any enterprise grade ESP (inbox, bounce, open tracking, click tracking, etc)
  • Powerful user interface for managing many aspects of your campaigns (email templates, user lists, etc)
  • Excellent inbox deliver-ability
  • White-labeling features that are simple to implement (to hide the fact that SendGrid is your ESP for outgoing e-mails)
  • User interface can be non-intuitive for some features
  • API Documentation is lacking in some places (but user support is top notch and responsive, so answers can be had relatively easily)
If you're building/managing custom software products that need to send custom e-mails on a per-user level, where your customizations are more than a simple mail merge (eg, first name, last name, etc), SendGrid is an obvious winner. More consideration needs to be applied if your needs aren't so cut-and-dry. SendGrid doesn't have the GUI composition tools that some other platforms have, so managing a typical marketing e-mail list is not the best use case for SendGrid. However, their API is top notch and afford you a lot of capabilities, so if you're at all building custom software and need to send e-mail, SendGrid is worth putting at the top of the list.

As a business that primarily operates through its website, we used SendGrid's transaction email service quite heavily to communicate with our users. We used the SendGrid API for event triggered emails ranging from verification emails to more sophisticated email dispatches based on user activity.

As far as how it helped us resolve business problems - it's a relatively cheap service and effectively allowed us to adopt the API that adapted to our needs at the time. It's also easy to use in terms of development and definition of email dispatches.
  • It's cost effective.
  • API is easy to use.
  • Pay-as-you-go model helps project usage costs.
  • Actually viewing previous emails dispatched. SendGrid does not have this feature - although it provides numbers on emails dispatched within 3 days for the cheapest plan.
  • The service asks you to pay more (although a minimal amount) to have visibility on email activity upto 30 days in the past.
  • The API doesn't allow an export of a report of email activity over a period of time. It can be quite frustrating at times to be limited in this way.
  • Their customer support isn't the best. Certainly some room for improvement there.
If you do not mind the lack of some historic data for your website and need something that is cost effective, then SendGrid is right for you. Keeping in mind how cheap this service really is, the pros outweigh the cons up to a certain limit.

However if having historic data, better reporting and visibility on content of past emails is important to you, then go for something else (albeit a tad more expensive). That's the compromise that you'll have to decide on.

We use sendGrid emails to send our most important transactional emails.
  • Good deliverabilty of emails.
  • Amazing customer support.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • I wish there was an option to see all of the suppressions at once. Currently, I have to click down the list of 7 options which is a little annoying to search for a certain person who may be being supressed but you are not sure which type of suppression that person is under.
  • Since sub-users are possible (which is a very nice feature), it would also be nice to be able to have webhooks available for each of the sub-users as well. Currently there is only one central web hook possible per account.

We use SendGrid to help prevent email generated by our clients' sites from being flagged as spam.
  • We use it for email notifications generated by client websites. Without SendGrid, such email messages often fail to be delivered.
  • We use it for sending our clients' e-newsletter email messages. Without SendGrid, such email messages often fail to be delivered.
  • SendGrid is very complicated to set up. They offer very limited phone support for setting it up and for adding client email sub-accounts.
  • SendGrid seems to have service outages more often than I would have expected.
  • The pricing is a little misleading. They have "free" and "inexpensive" plans but you cannot really do much of any use with those plans.
  • Technical support is spotty - sometimes they are instantly available and sometimes not.
When you have email being sent "by" a WordPress website, SendGrid makes it much more likely that your email will go through. Also, it imposes a certain structure that makes you a better email marketer if you're using it to send email newsletters.

Stadio uses SendGrid Transactional Email not only for its automated sales and customer support outreach, but also for its core product. Stadio clients are provided hardware and software to design and implement a captive Wi-Fi login portal at a brick-n-mortar business where customers input personal data, then see mobile marketing for Wi-Fi access. As soon as the customer receives Wi-Fi access, Stadio uses SendGrid transactional email to automate a personalized email to the customer, curated by the Stadio client.
  • SendGrid's template editor is very easy to use with drag-n-drop functionality and great organization among template groups.
  • SendGrid customer support is top-notch. We also had onboarding training that was invaluable.
  • SendGrid subuser management and co-worker/"teammate" functionality is incredible for our own business.
  • SendGrid's template builder could still use some additional features that other email marketing services provide.
  • SendGrid should make the "tracking global unsubscribe" formattable so that it doesn't just align to the left.

We use SendGrid to send all of our transactional emails for millions of purchases, account notifications, etc., as well as for millions of marketing emails. We use it both as our own email marketing program and to power an automated email marketing software service we sell to our clients. Most of our emails are designed and then implemented to be automatic and dynamic (i.e., we don't use it for custom newsletters and we never use it for cold email campaigns).
  • High deliverability rates
  • Easy and robust API implementation
  • Cost-effective plans for enormous email send
  • Pricing can be a double-edged sword -- you can easily underpay for a plan and get hit with big overages, and you can just as easily overpay for a plan you don't need. Paying in advance is a real gamble.
  • SendGrid is for more technically proficient users. I would only recommend this program to developers or highly technical email marketers.
  • SendGrid doesn't come standard with Drip Email features (at least last time I checked). As far as I know, it's a newer feature and comes at a separate cost. In my opinion, that's a hole in their feature coverage.
Great if you're a larger company or if you have a technical team to help implement. Great if you're trying to implement a "set it and forget it" type of solution for transactional emails or notification emails. Great if you're trying to create dynamic or automated marketing campaigns.

Not great if you're a smaller company just starting out or if you're a non-technical staff. Terrible if you're just trying to send simple, WYSIWYG marketing emails.

SendGrid is used primarily by our sales and marketing teams to run mini campaigns out of Salesforce. We also use it for some member communication.
  • SendGrid is incredibly easy to use and implement.
  • SendGrid provides an inexpensive tool that the sales team can leverage for high ROI.
  • SendGrid has great support and has been willing to work with us on all our needs.
  • SendGrid is a little too basic and therefore has not replaced all the functionality we need in Marketing Cloud/Exact Target.
SendGrid features a more powerful dashboard and better analysis than other comparable platforms. It has a slightly more expansive feature set and higher limits on the free tier. Custom domain branding makes for an easy to implement solution. SendGrid provides libraries for integration in many languages and was easy to do so with excellent documentation.

We use SendGrind as a relay for transactional emails. We run client branded email campaigns through SendGrid as well as internal marketing campaigns.
  • Data & analytics
  • List management & suppression
  • Whitelabel and great support
  • Would benefit from top-notch email building platform
  • Would like a testing platform like Litmus
Not very appropriate for small businesses or agencies. Great solution for larger organizations.
