We just use it for backing up our data for 911. We replicated the data to another appliance at another location in the county. Other departments that are part of Houston County use the appliances as well but we don't share resources. The use of the appliance(s) addresses the need to backup critical data that we use for dispatching 911 calls.
  • Backup Copy
  • Image backups
  • Data File backups
  • The UI is hard to use no very intuitive.
  • Flow of operations is confusing.
  • Getting to some parts of the system seem very confusing.
Very well suited for most environments. I don't see where it would not be well suited for a backup solution.

We use Unitrends at all of our locations for server backups and critical workstations. The recovery option has saved several user files that needed to be fixed due to user error.
  • Full backups with compression
  • Version saving
  • Easy of recovery
  • Web interface
  • Error reporting
  • Logging
The system works great for static server backup with a limited backup window. It is not that great where the system will not be on the network for several days.

We are using Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery to backup our local users content to the Unitrends cloud. It is being used across our entire organization. We elected to transition to Unitrends as we were experiencing challenges with our previous backup solution (Veritas).
  • Simple interface for network administrators to schedule data backups to occur on our desired schedule.
  • Simple interface for network administrators to be able to pull down backups.
  • Easy to understand reports and logs.
  • Alerts to indicate when nearing storage capacity.
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery has provided my district's IT Department with an easy to use solution to schedule backups of our users files to the cloud with the ability to recover them with ease. It helped to address a pain point that we were experiencing with our previous backup solution.

We use Unitrends for everything from recovering spreadsheets, to providing DRaaS. Besides the peace of mind [of] knowing that we have protection against hardware failures and ransomware attacks, we have used it to complete our migration from physical machines to virtual. We use it to be able to roll back a system in the event of a bad update.

Support is US-based, and very knowledgeable about the product. Almost always, the first person to respond knows the answer, even to difficult problems.

Management interface is basic, but understandable and creating backups, performing restores, and creating reports is easy. New features, such as indirect monitoring for ransomware, are added from time to time.
  • Single vendor, tight integration.
  • Intuitive interface.
  • Physical or virtual appliance.
  • Works best only within the Unitrends universe. Weak on integration to Azure.
  • Would like to see better indexing for finding lost files across multiple backups.
One of the best at providing everything a medium sized business needs, in a single package, with a single vendor. No need to have an outside consultant stitch together elements from different suppliers.

Less flexible in going beyond what it does well. Works with both VMware and Hyper-V, but better with the former.

We use Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] in a set it and forget fashion. We are required to archive our email for a set number of years, and Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] allows us to do this effectively.
  • Daily emails confirm the status of daily backups
  • Backups are detailed and you can drill down the file level to recover data
  • The online dashboard command center is easy to navigate
  • There is a Dark Web monitoring service. However, if you haven't signed up for feature, there is no easy way to explore DW monitoring to determine whether adding the service will bring value to your organization.
[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] is a robust application.

We currently use Unitrends as our central onsite backup solution. It is used to handle both single-file and full system recovery for both physical and virtual machines. We also use it as part of the DR plan for offsite backup to AWS.
  • File level recovery
  • Backup catalog management
  • Overall reporting
  • Offsite backup when not using Unitrends cloud service or another Unitrends device could be better.
  • Streamlined or single page on a web interface that lists device information/status would be helpful.
  • Better information in UI when features will not work with the current configuration. Data throttling is the main example of this.
In the 3 years I have used the solution, they have implemented many features that have made it a very robust solution. I believe it is a great solution for medium-sized companies that invest in additional units or the cloud service to optimize data size and boost confidence in disaster recovery. In my opinion, where this solution would be least effective is in a small to medium company protecting more than 8TB of data. The current system for doing the offsite transfer to non-Unitrends storage is a bit unwieldy. A system recovery of a large system could prove slow and problematic.

Being in a healthcare environment, the potential loss of medical records and PHI is not something we can afford to [let] happen. We've implemented Unitrends throughout the organization covering several different departments. If something were to go wrong, I know I can count on my Unitrends backups and an amazing support staff backing me.
  • Incredible support. Anytime I've had an issue someone on the other end made it their issue as well. One night I had a host machine fail where several critical servers lived. Not only did the Unitrends tech stay up that night with me, but he also went above and beyond to do some research to assist me in resolving the server problem itself.
  • The live vm recovery is amazing. This feature has saved me many times.
  • The reports and analytical side of things is detailed, which I like.
  • Price can be a bit high - but the support you receive and the features itself are worth every penny of it.
  • Error logs are a bit vague, I find myself digging through log after log trying to uncover an issue.
Unitrends should be implemented everywhere. The digital world continues to grow and so does the chance of hackers gaining entry to your network, hardware failing, etc... Data recovery is huge and any place that values their data should have something like this in place.

  • Easy to setup and manage.
  • Daily reports of the success/failure of the backups.

We are a relatively small organization with limited data backup requirements; We run a single 602 appliance to back up to for the entire organization, across several small server centers. We back up user files and financial data and a few important Hyper-V servers. In addition, Unitrends is supposed to also back up to their Cloud Storage to "forever cloud". Unitrends is currently our only backup vendor.
  • They are really good at selling their software and services
  • Customer service is atrocious. In 2 years, we've barely had cloud storage working.
  • Backups crash consistently at least once every few weeks for no apparent reason. We send the failure codes and try to find out why, never receive a reply even though we paid for full 24x7 service in advance.
  • When we purchased the 602 unit, we were told that it could be expanded with more storage. We recently found out that this really meant "buy another one of our units w/ service contract". Not exactly what it sounded like 2 years ago.
Probably good when someone runs a SOHO and needs basic backup, and is willing to spend gobs of time troubleshooting ongoing backup issues every few weeks. Other than that, I'm thinking that even our lousy tape storage from 5 years ago was doing a better job. Unfortunately, I'm very disappointed. Our contract is up this month, and honestly I should have moved to Synology a year ago.

It is being used for our company to backup servers essential to our operations. It provides us with regular backups of files and databases in the event a file is lost or corrupted. We also rely on it for recovery purposes should we have a server failure or ransomware locking the files.
  • It does an efficient job of backing up data
  • It provides a means of transferring data for archiving off site
  • It provides a convenient means of restoring lost or corrupted files
  • It is cumbersome to label archive media through the interface
  • It tends to generate warnings (predictive analytics I think is the term) that are not valid

We have used Unitrends Backup Appliance to backup on-premise infrastructure consisting of physical as well as virtual servers, and to cross-replicate data among four office locations, for offsite storage.
  • Simple to configure appliances and backup jobs.
  • Efficient use of storage.
  • Very low maintenance product.
  • Easy to update.
  • No support for sftp or ftps, only ftp.
  • Comes out of the box with SMBv1.
Very reliable product, it's well suited for virtual and physical server infrastructure. Great when you need the benefits of simple to configure backups and peace of mind that you have this level of protection. Had a few issues at first with some physical server backups but after some troubleshooting those were resolved. Haven't had to troubleshoot backup issues in over a year.

We have two Unitrends backup appliances in different datacenters, backing up the opposite datacenter. We mostly use it to back up our four Hyper-V hypervisors, but also do some file-level backup and SQL backups. These two devices back up essentially everything that we have on-premises here in the organization.
  • Easy to implement.
  • Instant recovery with VMs.
  • Good reports.
  • Hyper-V backups can fail easily (likely a Hyper-V problem).
  • Configuring SMTP was a challenge (we use non-default ports).
The Hyper-V backups are very useful. We've had a couple of instances where we've had to use the instant recovery feature, and it worked beautifully. Within about five minutes, we had the VM back up and running. The devices do exactly what we need it to do. We also appreciate the quick response we get from Unitrends on support. We had a drive fail once, and Unitrends support contacted me about a replacement before I even knew the drive had failed.

After tornados swept through Nashville in spring 2020 and severely damaged several of our clients' properties, management decided it was time for us to implement a more robust backup plan that incorporated offsite archiving and disaster recovery. Unitrends' onsite Backup Appliance with Forever Cloud and DRaaS options provided a cost-effective means to address all of our needs with a single provider. We are now backing up all of our servers to our onsite appliance and replicating the backups to Unitrends cloud, and our core business servers can be spun up in Unitrends' data center within 24 hours should disaster strike our on premises data center.
  • Flexible backup scheduling and retention settings.
  • Cloud synchronization of all backups.
  • Extensive host platform support.
  • Limited functionality with Citrix Xen Hypervisor.
Great option for HyperV or VMWare systems. For Citrix Xen Hypervisor, you need extensive storage resources to implement Unitrends at the host level. Unfortunately, we are limited to using the backup agent and will have to restore individual VMs in the event of a failure.

We purchased the product with expectations beyond what it can competently deliver on a small company-wide backup; this product was chosen on a recommendation from our VAR.
It fails to meet any and all expectations except for the most simple file backup; doesn't handle large files/database, vm images, user equipment, etc. without additional challenges. SQL backup is a non-starter with this product.
Backup speed is acceptable, restore speed is abysmal, tech support is pretty good, but we won't be using the product on next refresh.
  • Low cost.
  • Good reporting of when it goes sideways (failed backup).
  • Tech support is good and necessary.
  • The graphical UI makes assumptions that work for basic backup challenges, but forces us to tech support or in our case work on exit strategy.
  • vSphere integration is abusive to the cluster (freezes, snapshot); creating a 5TB snap of a 5TB VM doesn't work well; especially when VM image crosses multiple data stores.
  • VSS reliance is a non-starter in our heavy I/O environment.
  • Restore rate is unbelievably slow. - data de-duplication inefficiencies?
  • Inability to set multiple VLANs on network ports, increasing router workload.
  • iSCSI integration of backup copy is a joke though UI, check our service tickets.
Suitability appears to be inversely proportional to the technology suite in use. Works fine for single network, small install. But our installation of when we were only 4TB of total data, and 300GB daily delta, exceeds the capability of this device, despite presales engineer indicating [it] would be properly sized. We have just completed our SAN refresh, have 20TB deployable, but will have to address our backup solution before exploiting that resource.
Another example is that our network infrastructure consists of many logical 'air gaps', being carried on VLAN trunks. I was hoping to bring a VLAN trunk into the appliance but it can only backup untagged frames, requiring multiple Ethernet ports with affinities to VLANs, as well as loading our router for smaller backup demands.

I selected Unitrends as our backup solution as soon I joined my current company a few years ago. Our contract with the previous vendor was expiring, and I wanted to find a solution that gave us both onsite and offsite backup, was easier to use, and had excellent customer service. After evaluating a few other providers, I decided Unitrends had what we needed at reasonable rates.
  • Great customer service and support.
  • Quick turnaround when device is defective.
  • When get notified on potential issues.
  • Pricing could improve.
It is great if your data backup and storage needs are not into the TBs. With large storage needs, it is a little pricy.

We use it across the whole organization to maintain backups of all of our on-premises systems.
  • I can't think of anything that it does particularly well.
  • Better explanations of the various backup types.
  • More and better documentation in general.
  • More guided configuration, for people who don't have a lot of time to devote to it or who are not experts.
  • More context-sensitive help, documentation, and assistance.
  • More flexibility when migrating content to a new appliance during an upgrade.
  • The ability to tune the SLA options so that backups aren't running all during the day.
I don't know how to answer this question. It seems like any time I try anything new with Unitrends, I encounter some significant limitation, or problem, or both. I had an issue during the migration to our last new appliance that literally took Unitrends Support five months to resolve.

Unitrends has given us the comfort of knowing our entire company's data is backed up, and when anything happens we have quick access to it for a full recovery. We have several drives for each level of our company and Unitrends allows us to back these up just as they are in our current environment.
  • We lost power and thus lost one of our drives. This drive was backed up to our Unitrends appliance, and thus allowed for quick recovery.
  • At one point several files got corrupt[ed] and we needed to restore the last known working file, which was easy to do using Unitrends system.
  • One area for improvement might be allowing the user to delete their own backups.
Unitrends Data Center is ideal for small companies like ours that have on premise software solutions, and store all files locally for ease of use. With this allows us to utilize Unitrends system for security.

We use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery across the whole organization, as we are a small private school. The main reason we use it is for the ability to spin up some vital servers in the cloud, should we ever lose them, so that learning would not be disrupted. In an era of hybrid learning, the ability to stay up has become even more vital, as classes are available in so many formats--a power outage in the past that fries a server might have resulted in a day off (and time to recover), but now that all learning can be shifted to virtual almost automatically, there is no "school down" downtime to recover a machine; it has to be available quickly.
  • It runs without intervention--some other programs were prone to just stopping with an error
  • The user interface is easy to understand and use
  • The ability to spin up virtual servers in the cloud allows the time to get bare metal ready for a restore
  • Testing of the spin-up seems rather difficult--I'd like to see an easier way to be sure that the spin-up will work
In any situation where almost immediate access is required to a server that isn't healthy, the cloud aspect of virtual servers cannot be beaten. I would imagine anyplace with access to printing servers or databases would find this feature useful. Cloud-based resources like O365 and Google Drive have kind of removed the need for file servers to spin up, but certain servers simply need a physical component on the network, and it's nice to know that the physical can become virtual rapidly if need be.

We use this appliance across the entire company. We back up all of our servers, our NAS, and all of our SQL databases using this device. It's nice to have a single pane of glass for all of the backups, one simple place to back everything up and one simple place to run all of our restores from. We were backing up basically all of our devices using different methods and with Unitrends we can back everything up to one appliance.
  • Easy to implement.
  • Integration for offsite storage of backups.
  • Excellent customer service.
  • It's not the cheapest option.
  • Web interface is okay, but there's always room to improve.
I think that a lot of places could benefit from having a Unitrends appliance working for them. I haven't personally used it to backup and VMs yet, but I can't wait to try that out. I think in an environment where uptime of your servers is of the utmost importance is where a device like this really shines. Being able to run a backup copy of your server directly from the appliance in the event of a server failure gives you peace of mind knowing that you could be back up and running even in the event of a complete failure of your existing server hardware.

I think some places that might not require this level of service would be places where you're simply backing up some files or computers in a small business where your down time wouldn't be that substantial if you just had to restore from something like an external hard drive or something like that.

We use Unitrends to backup all of our servers and data in our datacenter. The Unitrends solution - combining on premises backup with cloud backup - is the ideal solution for an organization our size. The on premises appliance allows for fast, easy backup that just works. The cloud storage gives us peace of mind that once backed up to the cloud and disconnected from our network, we can recover from almost any scenario - from natural disaster to cryptolocker attacks. Unitrends solves our backup problem, disaster recovery, and business continuity in one easy-to-manage solution. Definitely recommend for small to medium size businesses and IT Departments.
  • Microsoft SQL Server database backups.
  • Individual file restore for corrupted or accidently deleted files.
  • Easy disk-to-cloud backup.
  • Server image snapshot and restore.
  • Ability to view stats for our cloud storage service.
We first implemented Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery when we were a VMware shop. We have since migrated to Hyper-V and the Unitrends device has worked smoothly with both environments. The Unitrends solution works well for small to medium businesses with smaller IT shops, due to its fast learning curve, light footprint, and ease-of-use. It's also priced affordably for the SMB market. As a medium sized organization that doesn't have a dedicated IT group, or even a dedicated individual, for backup and recovery, Unitrends is a great solution.

We have two people who manage our [Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] appliance. Many people can recover their own files using the "previous versions" tab in Windows Explorer. However, when this is not sufficient we will get the restore request.

We back up Hyper-V virtual machines directly from the Hyper-V servers. We do backup some systems directly as well, stand-alone servers, SQL servers, file servers, and until recently, VMware and Exchange servers as well.

We have redundant data centers with ongoing replication between them, so the loss of the virtual environment at one site is not being addressed by Unitrends. The remaining problems addressed by the appliance are:
1. Recovering historic files that were deleted long ago and now are needed.
2. Recovering SQL data to a prior state following a disaster.
3. Recovering servers or other virtual IT systems to a prior state following a disaster.
4. Maintain recover-ability of our entire infrastructure at a new location in the event of the loss of this entire site, including both data centers.
  • Unitrends provides easy discovery of history restore points for specific systems. Restoring these historic moments is quite simple.
  • Unitrends provides rapid and discrete backups of Hyper-V virtual systems, SQL databases, Exchange databases, and file-level direct system backups. The impact on the servers being backed up is not noticeable if your backups are scheduled to not cause disk contention on the virtual servers. This is easy to accomplish. Virtual Machines do not need any agents installed, just the virtual hosts containing them. This low-impact but comprehensive backup strategy is quite scalable and easy to manage.
  • Restoring individual files may seem trivial from a global DR perspective, however, sometimes it really matters. An errant configuration file on a virtual system can cause grief. [Let's] just say that you don't want to roll the system back, due to data consistency concerns. No worries, just create a File-Level Recovery instance of the desired restore point and select the needed file directly from the appliance, then drop the restore point. This is a quick process.
  • Restoring a specific SQL or Exchange database to a specific point in time has saved us a few times.
  • Virtual machine backups for RHEL or CentOS do not provide usable FLR instances. It would be nice if they did. On the windows side, that is a stellar feature.
  • "The predictive analytics engine has detected anomalies on the following systems which probabilistically matches the behavior of systems impacted by Ransomware." - It would be nice if we could whitelist certain content that we have encrypted intentionally so that future alerts would be raised if new encryption is detected elsewhere.
  • Active Jobs view: It would be nice that when you have the View Details option selected and also have multiple jobs selected that they would all display in the details. If this is too resource-intensive, then preferably the most recently selected job would display.
  • Job Manager view: When selecting multiple jobs, only the toggle button remains enabled. It would be nice if the delete button also remained enabled so that multiple jobs could be deleted at the same time.
  • Job Manager view: When filtering the view by typing text into the column headers, the selected [checkboxes] should be cleared. It is essential that the [checkboxes] no longer displayed are cleared, but normally if you are adding a new filter, it is a new task. Clearing all should be fine.
  • IPv6 connectivity between appliance and agents would be nice. Full dual-stack would also be nice, but failing that, being able to select IPv4 or IPv6 would be great.
I feel this is one of the best solutions for a Hyper-V environment and a Windows Server environment. [Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] just fits and works so well. We are not a VMware shop, so I cannot speak to that. We backup CentOS and RHEL servers as well, but all through the agent on the Hyper-V host server. No DR problems that this did not solve for years now - Windows (virtual and stand-alone) server, Linux virtual server, SQL Server, Exchange Server, etc.

We operate a data center that is shared by 26 school districts. We have a primary SAN site, a replica SAN site, and a backup site all connected via private fiber. The backup site consists of 2 hosts and central storage that is dedicated to backup processing/storage. We use Unitrends for this purpose. Each of our districts has [its] own UEB instance running with storage allocated to them and each can login and manage their own backup jobs and UEB as a whole.
  • Allows us to spin up as many UEBs as we need at no additional cost.
  • Relatively small processing and RAM footprint required.
  • Good daily reporting on backup job status.
  • Figuring out how to clear up space on the appliance, old servers, etc.
  • Easier to read logs in case issues arise.
  • When updating the appliance something that better indicates where you are in the update process, are you at 1% or 99% instead of just a spinning wheel that sometimes doesn't refresh properly?
[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is] well suited for a shared data center like ours to allow for individual appliances without needing to figure out a single solution and managing permissions and storage within. Also works very well with a virtualized environment allowing for quick backups/restores by snapshot while still allowing for file-level recovery, folder-based backup, [SQL-based] backups, etc.

We use [Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] to back up our virtual servers and some physical servers. We also create [an] archive on removable drives of all backups that go to the bank. We have a second appliance that is replicated from the first.
  • Backup jobs.
  • VMWare setup.
  • Recovery of files.
  • Bare metal recovery of physical servers.
  • Managing existing backup jobs.
Great for [the] virtual environment. Easy to use, easy to deploy, and easy to maintain. Some aspects of maintenance can be tedious as you cant delete a server until all jobs associated are removed. Would be nice if it automated that process. If I delete the device, go ahead and remove the jobs too.

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] is used to back up our entire organization's on-prem data, virtual machines, and databases. It allows us to be confident that our data is safe and secure in the event of a disaster. We have an appliance on-site and at our DR site.
  • File Backup.
  • VM Backup.
  • Ease of Use.
  • Fantastic GUI.
  • Agent upgrade improvements.
  • Network configuration UI overhaul.
  • Ease of adding an SSL [certificate].
[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is] great for environments where you have many on-prem servers and applications that need to be backed up, as well as in scenarios where you need [a] fast recovery that doesn't rely on your internet connection. Less appropriate in organizations that are 100% cloud-based.
