We are using our Unitrends appliance across our organization in North America and also an appliance in Mexico. It is very easy to set up and use. The user interface is intuitive and it makes for quick and easy file or folder retrieval for our organization, thus providing us with a great solution to recover missing or corrupted data.
  • Easy to use and configure. Unitrends provided a great session with the support team to go through the set up and configuration process with us.
  • Quick and easy to recover data to either the original location or to another location.
  • Very good reporting tools and email notifications of completed or failed jobs.
  • Excellent support with remote access.
  • None come to mind.

It's great for recovery of individual files or entire folder structures.

We had a case of files being corrupted by an outside ransomware and we were able to completely recover large folder structures very quickly back to the original state.

We use Unitrends for the whole organization. It backs up all virtual and physical machines to a local backup appliance which is then replicated to the Unitrends cloud storage. This enables our company to restore individual files or recreate virtual machines from the backup appliance in the event the virtual machine is corrupted or removed. Also Unitrends allows us to restore a physical machine to a virtual machine or a bare metal restore if needed.
  • Allows for integration with your virtual infrastructure i.e. VMware by connecting to vCenter to see all virtual machines.
  • Enables easy replication of backup data to cloud storage
  • Web based management is easy to follow
  • Limitation of larger files replicating to the Unitrends cloud
  • Restore process can hard to manage
Unitrends is well suited for small to medium businesses that require backup solutions for a mixed environment of virtual and physical machines. Also compatible on a variety of virtual infrastructures including VMware and Hyper-V as well and multiple versions of operating systems such as Windows 2008/2012 and different Linux distributions including RedHat, CentOS, etc.

We use the Unitrends appliance to backup all of server infrastructure across our entire school district. We have placed the appliance off site for disaster recovery. We also backup all of our data using Unitrends as well. We have complete peace of mind that our data is safe and is easily accessible.
  • Backup
  • Off-Site Data Replication to the cloud
  • Ease of Use/Interface
  • The new 9.0 user interface has helped tremendously as before it was difficult to navigate.
I believe it is well suited for any environment, small to large.

We use Unitrends to back up the entire network. From file servers to SQL databases. It backs up everything for us. Previously we used tape backup and that process was slow and often had failures. Unitrends backs up the entire network with quickness and we can now back up everything instead of just picking and choosing like we did with the tape backup.
  • Unitrends backs up file servers exceptionally well. We use the incremental forever strategy and we currently get about 45 days of available backups on the appliance per server and we are able to also keep 7 days worth of SQL backups.
  • Recovery is a breeze. Browse to the location of the file that needs to be restored and then click restore. A few seconds later the file is back where it needs to be.
  • Archiving is very easy. Place a hard drive into the archiving unit, let the archive schedule run and we now have a complete backup from the previous month we can move to another location for safety.
  • The web interface is a bit old. They are in beta with a new version, but it takes some getting used to.
  • Some of the functions within backing up and restoring can be confusing until you get the hang of it.
  • Pushing updated client software still does not work in Windows 2012. That needs to be addressed.
Unitrends is well suited for any company seeking to have a backup solution that is capable of backing up the entire network for the company. If you and your company only need to back up a few items or possibly one server, Unitrends may be a bit to much for your needs.

We deployed the Unitrends Recovery appliance to back up our entire server infrastructure. This includes many virtual Windows servers sitting in a Microsoft Hyper-V environment. We protect SQL Servers, Exchange servers, file shares, and domain controllers. We utilize the archive feature to maintain a weekly offsite copy of the backups, and replicate all backups to the Unitrends Forever Cloud. This set up ensures business continuity, and disaster recovery.
  • Cloud replication is easy to configure, and once set up it works reliably all of the time. We have been doing this for 11 months with 100% replication. This can easily be incorporated into a business's disaster response and business continuity plan.
  • Data compression and deduplication is efficient beyond our wildest expectations. Our average dedupe ratio is 7:1 and the average data reduction is 5:1 overall.
  • Adding new Windows based systems is simple and quick. The Recovery appliance can push out the recovery application onto new equipment directly from the web interface, simplifying the addition of new systems.
  • The web interface can be slow at times, with report generation and screen switching taking several seconds (up to 30 some times).
  • Navigating the system tree can be a bit tedious if you have many protected systems. A search feature would be nice.
  • Retention alerts don't always seem to clear themselves.
The Unitrends Recovery appliance is very well suited to SMB applications that are looking for a turnkey data protection device. It is full featured, with the ability to do bare metal restoration, virtual standby, and back up replication.

With a slightly clunky tree navigation, using the device in an environment where you have more than 100+ systems being protected can be a bit onerous. It still works fine, it just becomes a chore finding the particular server you need.

The Unitrends appliance is used to backup all data on our on-site servers. We use it as part of our disaster recovery planning and for the ability to restore individual files and folders as needed.
  • Unitrends support is far and away the best support I've ever received from any backup company. Support requests are answered quickly, by knowledgeable staff, and they proactively follow through until issues are resolved to my satisfaction. Best of all, they have on-shore technicians. I'm not trying to knock the knowledge and expertise of foreign support, but avoiding the language barrier is always a plus.
  • Recovery is quick and easy. And if you don't know what you're doing, I will refer you to my aforementioned thoughts on Unitrends support.
  • Encrypted replication to the cloud is awesome for disaster recovery planning. This plan also includes forever backup.
  • There is a learning curve to learning how to set up and manage backups.
  • I dislike the need to swap back and forth between the new UI and the legacy UI.
If you want robust, bulletproof backups, Unitrends is a great option. If you want encrypted off-site replication for Disaster Recovery, this solution is for you. If you want DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service), look no further.

If you want the cheapest option available, look elsewhere.

Unitrends is used to backup data on premise and replicate to the cloud. I am the IT person for BioNex Solutions, so I spec'd it, implemented it and I manage the day to day operations of the back up jobs, archiving and replication to the cloud. Implementing Unitrends appliances and backups addresses numerous critical business functions such as real-time backups, historical archiving, off site DR and ISO compliance with the fantastic reporting capabilities.
  • Unitrends is an easy to use, robust, web based application and appliance. It is easy to install, easy to set up and replicates backups to the cloud.
  • Unitrends has a user friendly interface that even junior staff can use with minimal training for restores.
  • Unitrends has fantastic reporting capabilities that can be used for critical things such as ISO auditing.
  • I don't feel that Unitrends needs much improvement. The only complaint I have is that for a site to site replication, you need 3 masters initially in order to start the de-dup process for the rest of the data. I know there was talk of engineering re-architecting that piece so that one master (like replicating to the cloud) is sufficient. I currently don't replicate site to site at BioNex, but I have used this feature with Unitrends at a different company where I also implemented multiple Unitrends appliances
I think Unitrends is well suited for almost everyone. The only issue is the price point for a small company. Being in a small (under 60) company, we are very budget conscious and even though Unitrends is a great value as far as the technology, hardware, software and support is concerned, it's hard to come up with 5-10K when that's more than your entire yearly I.T. budget.

We use Unitrends primarily for Disaster Recovery and Archival.
  • Data deduplication.
  • Most systems are able to be backed up using Native APIs.
  • Replication has been greatly improved, but needs a little more work.
  • Replication speed
  • Error reporting needs improvement, reasons for missed backups or incomplete backups are hard to understand with no indication of corrective activity needed.
Value for the money is good. Reliance on the system to do its job properly is improving.

Unitrends is used to protect the data of our on premises servers, key workstations, and some mobile users with laptops. Servers include Microsoft Windows Server 2012 hardware, VMware virtual machines running Windows, Linux, and Cisco products. Data center backups run each evening while workstation and laptops run during the day. Our two Recovery-823 units replicate between campuses ensuring backups of our critical systems are available at both locations if needed. Each weekend both systems archive the latest backups to Google Cloud storage. Utilizing Unitrends has lowered our monthly backup costs and eliminated the need to store and manage physical tapes on or off site.
  • Easily backup all disks and volumes of a system we wish to image or replace hardware. Instead of deploying Ghost we now just restore using Unitrends.
  • Site to site replication of key systems to ensure data access in the event of a disaster.
  • User interface and reporting system make Unitrends easy to use and does not take much time to manage weekly.
  • Better ability to backup laptop users who only connect to the network periodically during the day. If Unitrends could "detect" a mobile client was online it could then backup opportunistly.
  • Better "dashboard" so admins do not have to poke around the system menus for info and status.
  • More flexible job control for scheduled jobs that are missed.
Once setup and running it is largely a hands off backup system and supplies daily reports so admins can keep up with it without having to manage the UI daily. - Reports are also handy for long term planning. So far we have been 100% with data recovery when needed.

Unitrends is being used to back up the VMWare environment that is the backbone of our entire campus. The ease of use on the dashboard allows us to manage backups without investing a lot of personnel resources. This frees us up to concentrate on other critical areas without having to worry whether our backups will be there when we need them.
  • Rehydrating a virtual machine's entire folder structure to to easily find a particular file or set of files
  • Scheduling new backups
  • Integration with the VMWare environment allows us to see all of our virtual machines in a single place in the back up system.
  • Still struggling with setting the schedule/retention periods to get the long term backups that I'm looking for.
It has worked very well for us in our VMWare environment. It communicates directly with our VSphere controllers and so gives us visibility to pick and choose the VMs that we want to back up. We can set different schedules and retention periods based on the nature of the chosen VMs.

We use our Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance to backup all of our virtual machines throughout the school. It allows us to have a secondary copy of files should we have a critical failure on our SAN, but more importantly it allows me to restore files/systems that may have been accidentally deleted or corrupted.
  • I found the system very easy to setup and use. I was able to get it up and running within a day of its arrival - with no previous experience in Unitrends Appliances.
  • It does a very good job of integrating with VMware. Once authenticated with our system, it sees all of our VMs with no issue.
  • It's super easy to spin up a machine from a previous date, and recover files that may have been lost.
  • Setting up jobs for the first time took quite a bit of research, and a couple discussions with support. Not that the process was difficult in itself, but just understanding what the different kinds of backups entailed was not clear to a first time user.
  • Configuring Backup Copy targets was a little clunky to get setup, but the support was great - and in the end I was able to get everything working.
My most common issue is when a user deletes something from the server, and has no idea how to get it back. It could even be from weeks ago, and the Unitrends Appliance allows me to spin up our Data Server and just grab it. The whole process is amazingly smooth.

We use the unitrends appliance to back up both our servers and critical workstations. It addresses the issues we had with disaster recovery.
  • Very easy to use with a single pane of glass for all backups.
  • Reliable, with good scheduling options.
  • Support is second to none.
  • I have few complaints but speed improvements would be welcome.
  • For a company our size, price is always a hot topic, however I believe the appliance to be a good value.
I would recommend the appliance to SMEs as it is incredibly easy to use and is backed up by top notch support. Also it is typically SMEs that have limited disaster recovery plans.

We have had a server failure in the last 12 months and successfully avoided downtime thanks to the appliance.

We currently use the Unitrends device for backups and disaster recovery. Overall the product works as it should. When there are problems it can be very frustrating to get things figured out. Our product was undersized when we made our initial purchase (two sizes too small). Getting everything transferred twice was a very big undertaking and involved several weeks of my time.
  • Unitrends works very well at VM level backups for various operating systems.
  • The ability to restore and test the DR functionality works well.
  • Reporting of backups is nice to see what has completed and what hasn't.
  • Support has been hard to get in contact with several times.
  • Replication has been hard to keep working and requires a lot of monitoring.
  • Encryption does not notify you when the key is not entered and all backups and replications fail until the key is entered.
  • Backups do not clean up into weekly or monthly backups so if you want to keep any real age you must either have a large amount of space or archive backups.
I think Unitrends works well in various scenarios but the size needed to keep any real retention makes it hard for me to recommend. In my industry we are required to keep files for several years so it is important we keep backups of the files and having to archive things makes it much more difficult to manage.

Divisional use (several departments) to backup a mix of physical and virtual machines and database servers. Previously, we were using a tape backup system from another vendor and were not backing up everything on a regular basis. We have recently added a Unitrends RXDA (archive to removable disks) unit for storing a copy of our weekly backups at a offsite vault location.
  • Unitrends support has a great reputation and is provides many channels to work with them.
  • Licensing is very straightforward and flexible. Archiving is included. Configuration was a breeze - we were up and running in half a day.
  • Solid platform and very stable. Easy to update and push out new versions to clients. New non-Flash interface is nicely done (dashboards).
  • If there is an sync issue with an INCR backup on MSSQL, the next scheduled backup will automatically convert to a FULL and resolve itself.
  • For those one-off backups during the workday, it would be nice to have the ability to "throttle back" the throughput as not to saturate the network connection and impact users. There is a work-around to overcome with (with another backup of a different server) but it's not optimum.
Unitrends excels at backing up your systems at whatever level of granularity you require and allows you to configure multiple levels of this: server, file, database. Their "Incremental forever" backups are easy to configure and automatically schedule synthetic DIFF and FULLS in the background. Being able to archive to whatever device is a nice option also and provides flexibility to accommodate most requirements.

We use our Unitrends device to make full domain backups and nightly incrementals. The device is intuitive to configure and while it is easy to get the backup data in, it is also very access to access backed up data down to the file level. Accessing and restoring a lost or corrupted user file takes moments.
  • Easy configurable backup schema.
  • Easily accessible backup data retrieval.
  • Lots of relevant canned reports in the system.
  • Proactive software update and patch information available.
  • I wish that I could generate a detailed backup status report instead of having to archive the weekly report that the system generates after I perform a full [backup].
Thankfully I have never had to use this in the real world, but the ability to "spin up" a VM from the device is comforting.

The Unitrends backup appliance is a simple and effect way to backup all our servers as well as provide the ability to archive those backups for off-site storage. The ability to restore either a single file or complete servers is an easy and quick process.
  • Restore single or multiple files.
  • Restore complete servers.
  • Archive backup for off-site storage.
  • Ensure that the new interface has the same capabilities as the old interface.
  • I purchased a 22 TB backup appliance, but it will only let me store 16 TB of data. Support has given me some excuse of "unique data", but the bottom line is that I still can only use 16 TB instead of 22 TB. This will be the single reason we may discontinue the use of Unitrends. Explaining your justification does not matter. I purchased 22 TB, I should be able to store 22 TB.
  • Increase your support staff and their technical level. Monitor your support calls so you can improve your support staff technical and soft skills.

We use two appliances across our district to backup data on our servers, and 2 virtual environments. Each appliance has a recovery appliance plugged into it. Once setup and scheduled it works very well.
  • Integrates with virtual appliances hosting VMware very well.
  • Small client based sets up and integrates well with appliance whether it is a virtual server or regular server.
  • Updates are very simple and can be pushed out to client based servers.
  • Bare-metal - we need in short something that boots up like that and clones like Acronis.
  • Simpler backup retentioning. seems convoluted.
  • Simpler backup and archiving. Just combine the two instead of calling them two different things.
It has gotten better it used to take too long to process or decrypt backups. Now it seems with newer servers it is a lot quicker.

  • The user interface is intuitive.
  • I can set it up and forget it. The systems alerts me if there are any issues.
  • I cannot recover individual mailboxes in Exchange email.

The Unitrends backup appliance is currently used for our daily backup process for the whole organization. Once a week we have it archive to an external hard drive for off-site disaster recovery. The appliance makes the process dead simple with archive scheduling so we are able to just grab the archive when it notifies us it is complete and send it to storage.
  • Simple scheduling interface and wizards to complete the basic setup so you can have a proper backup in no time.
  • Easy archiving so we can focus on other tasks.
  • Support is friendly and easy to work with if you run into a problem and need help.
  • The flash based menu system should be upgraded to HTML 5.
  • Ability to easily archive off-site using an rsync target. It is just too expensive to pay for 2 appliances when one is really just a storage target.
The appliance works really well in virtualized environments.

This product is used to backup the whole environment. It was easy to deploy and has been easy to support. We regularly need to do restores and this has not failed in meeting our needs.
  • Easy to deploy agent.
  • Easy setup and scheduling of backups.
  • Quick and efficient options to do restores.
  • We have had some replication issues with the cloud and found out after opening a ticket it was a known [issue] - so better communication on outages.
  • Support on Linux solutions is not documented well but provided enough to allow us to get the non-Windows devices setup.
  • The bare-metal restore and support of it is a little quirky but it works and wish it was a little better.

Well suited for Windows backups and restores. We have had some issues with Linux and other operating systems but it has met or exceeded the need.

Speed and efficiency are key and it does this and has been very effective. We replaced a tape library that was problematic and inconsistent so this is leaps and bounds above that older technology.

Our Unitrends appliance is being used to backup major business-critical systems, and interface with off-site storage for DR protection. This unit meets our needs well from a licensing standpoint whereas competitors tend to charge for software and licenses for each system that is being backed up. The Unitrends Recovery Series appliance has allowed us to add new servers and VMs to without additional expense.
  • The user interface of the appliance is easy to understand, and the initial setup was quick and painless.
  • For me, this unit works well as a set-it-and-forget-it solution. Once the setup for each backup was complete, the appliance does it job and nightly reports are all I need to confirm that things are working the way I expect.
  • Beyond getting used to the arrangement of menus and such between software releases, the appliance does a good job of making features easy to find and use.
  • Documentation of interfacing with cloud-based systems for replication could be easier to understand.
I find, for us, this unit was very appropriate given the number of physical systems we required backups of. In researching other systems, the Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance was a good fit for the price, given the capacity of the unit and the licensing structure. For customers with a small number of devices to be backed up, this may not be as good of a fit for the price.

Unitrends Recovery was a replacement to a simple online cloud solution used by my company. Critical systems and file servers are now backed up with reliability.
  • Bare metal backups are wonderful, this process has been tested and proves to be an excellent feature.
  • The GUI is simple to use better then most.
  • The restore ability is exceptional.
  • Expand on the recovery of files process.
  • Better remote administration of agents.
  • Broad search options, using less information to pull back more results.
This product is great in any environment if you can afford it. A medium to large enterprise is better suited. Environments with high data security and retention requirements would be a nice fit as well, no matter the company size.

We use Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance for our disaster recovery plan. In times of need it has saved time and money. We use it to backup our whole environment for instance servers, file shares, Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL databases. What is really great is you don't need additional licenses to backup different applications.
  • Restoring files, databases, Exchange mail items, and servers. Unitrends has done a great job making the process easy and quick.
  • Configuring backup with their GUI interface is simple.
  • Backups are fast and are compressed nicely.
  • Backups and restore are fully customizable.
  • The process of configuring backup can be complicated for new users.
It can be difficult to have the correct appliance for environments that increase size quickly.
