The short version, we are not using Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery [anymore]. The long version, we found support staff lacking in knowledge with regards to [the] configuration of the appliance. We were sold a backup and recovery solution with 10gb ethernet nics. We tried all manners of solutions to get performance at or near 6-7gb. Unitrends support recommended we switch to fiber. We were sold, shipped, and attempted to install three different fiber cards into our Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery appliance. It seems the engineers at Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery are/were not communicating with the support staff. Support recommended the wrong fiber card the first time. Ordered the ‘correct’ fiber card, attempted to install [it], [the] appliance would not see the card. Turns out our appliance did not support the second card. Support then recommended we purchase and install, yep you guessed it, the first card we had already shipped back. Attempted to install this card for the 5th or 6th time, at this point, a senior engineer jumped into the troubleshooting and after a week or two of conversations, we were sold the wrong appliance, to begin with. We ended up going to a competitor, the one with a similar name to an 80s cubed game. Backup times on the Unitrends for a 2TB vm, 6 hours. Backup times on the competition’s solution, 30-45 minutes. Oh and we get full 40gb throughput using the 4 channel fiber modules built into the device. Also, the new box is capable of providing backups during the day. Almost zero impact to the end-user.

We utilize Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery to backup all of our data from teachers and other staff members. The technology department backs up files for all of the teachers in our corporation. We have used Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery to restore information systems after we were hit with ransomware at the end of 2019. It was an excellent resource to have at that point in time and we were able to successfully restore most systems from our Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery.

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is used for all backups for virtual and physical servers for our school.
  • Single console for physical and virtual servers.
  • Backups are consistent and reliable.
  • As of now, I have found their cloud backup very, very unreliable.
  • When there is a problem with the could backup it takes a long time to resolve the problem.

The IT department uses Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery to back up critical organizational data generated by physical and virtual servers. The backup process helps mitigate risk and is part of our disaster recovery plan. It also helps enable rapid restoration of files, should a user inadvertently delete an important file from a server.
  • Intuitive web UI makes frequent tasks easy and navigation less cumbersome
  • Expandable and versatile appliance allows for external devices for archiving
  • High performance appliance doesn't make you wait for file restoration
  • Ability to download appliance software through site and not just through appliance UI
  • Different default IP address--may conflict with some existing networks
  • More external connection options (e.g., USB-C) for faster backup copies
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is well suited for all kinds of deployment scenarios--small to enterprise-level environments will be able to use the capabilities of the backup appliances. It can also link together appliances for replication purposes, which helps in a DR situation. In an air-gapped network, it may be more difficult to apply updates and stay current, unless there is an offline image deployment method through Unitrends.

My Unitrends Recovery Series performs incremental backups on a flexible schedule to accomplish our recovery goals. We can recover to dissimilar hardware, a virtual machine, or simply grab a few files out of a backup if that is what we need. We also use it to store copies of our data offsite. We can test our disaster recovery plans, as well as test individual backups. Our organization relies on it to protect the business in the case of a disaster.
  • Incremental Forever Backups -- Only one full required.
  • Data Deduplication -- More backups are able to fit on the appliance.
  • Price is high relative to others.
  • It is easy to sacrifice capacity to get a lower price -- which means the unit is too small in years to come.

Unitrends has always worked well in my mostly Windows environment. The documentation is well written and informative for all of the scenarios that I've run into, and if it doesn't answer my question or my environment is different, support has always been there to answer those questions. Support is highly recommended as the engineers are very familiar with the product and they go above and beyond for their customers.

The new interface is a large improvement over the old flashed based one.

Unitrends can backup a variety of applications, but be aware that while Exchange and SharePoint can be restored by Unitrends, to do single item recovery requires an additional third party license (Kroll OnTrack) which at the time of purchase wasn't super clear and caused a bit of a kerfuffle during an incident that we had to recover some individual mail items.

Legal Hold is a feature that is likely to cause lots of issues if you use it without fully understanding it. It isn't a bad feature, but a lack of space and not planning for legal hold will cause lots of backups to fail.

We use Unitrends on-prem, cloud and DRaaS solutions to backup all of our Enterprise data.
  • It is a Rock-Solid backup product platform.
  • Unitrends Support is stellar, and always able to resolve any issues we have.
  • Unitrends cloud solutions are tried-and-true, and we run a full DRaaS test every year.
  • There is nothing I would be able to suggest as an improvement - they are awesome!
Unitrends fits all of our data protection needs. We use it to backup our VMware infrastructure (consisting of 5 VMware clusters, with over 400 production virtual machines). We also use Unitrends DRaaS solution to provide immediate recovery of our core-critical systems, in the event of any local system outage. Lastly we use Unitrends Forever Cloud solutions to backup critical, and irreplaceable data (such as our 3 archival departments).

We use our fantastic Unitrends appliance as our primary backup for our Windows servers, Cisco phone system and a few desktops. We have select servers set to use the Instant Recovery feature which would allow us to spin up a virtual machine from a backup and use it in production.
  • Ease of use.
  • Retention policies that are easy to understand and implement.
  • Updating the backup client is very easy.
  • Support was lackluster last year.
  • The new user interface is still missing key features that the old interface had.
  • The new web interface is not intuitive.
Unitrends is great as a "set it and forget it" software. When it is working you can rest easy. When it isn't working sometime support struggles to fix the issue but I've always had my problems solved, it just may take awhile.

The Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery backups all of our server and computing systems. One feature is it can backup IBM AIX along with windows servers. That was a key for us and saved a fair amount of complexity by having one backup system. We use the standard file by file backup for some of our data and [for] others we use the complete image backups. VMware backups are painless and efficient. Based on VMware snapshots set to do incremental forever and the system does [an] automatic consolidation every week or so they call a synthetic backup. SQL Server and MS Exchange have specific agents that will [back up] their specific [database] types. Lastly, we send a portion of our data to their forever cloud for disaster recovery and compliance.
  • Snapshot backups
  • Compression
  • Easy off site
  • Purpose build appliance
  • No Object level restore for MS Active Directory
  • Make it simpler to use eternal devices for special backups and related
Backup multiple types of operating systems on one device. Windows, Linux, AIX and more. Can mount a virtual machine back to the appliance and start it up to use temporarily while getting a host back on line or just to mount and retrieve some needed files without doing a full restore. Agent backups can truncate logs for SQL and Exchange and also backup the whole machine as a virtual machine backup so data loss is at a minimum.

We currently utilize Unitrends across our organization as our backup solution for multiple building servers and services. In the past we have utilized it to restore deleted or corrupted data on shared drives from data servers and to restore SQL databases. These tasks were incredibly simple to do using Unitrends. We really like the ability to do file level recovery. This is useful when a staff member or student accidentally deletes a few files from a shared drive or folder. We don't necessarily want to restore an entire server or drive, so it's nice that we can path into the backup and grab just the missing files that we need. The SQL restore was great as well. It not only restored the database but also setting involved with the application that the database was associated with. This made restoring the corrupted server extremely simple.
  • File level restoration.
  • SQL Database restoration.
  • Managing multiple backup routines.
  • The new user interface seems to be missing some of the functionality of the old interface.
  • Better organization in the interface.
Unitrends is great for file level recovery and database recovery. As stated previously, we have used Unitrends extensively for that and it has performed great. Unitrends is especially useful for physical servers as well. Unitrends full backups are slightly unnecessary now with virtual servers though. Most of our virtual servers now just have their VM's cloned on a schedule for backups. This means when a server goes down, we can just restore it from the clone and be back up and running within minutes. Unitrends still is useful though on those servers for individual file recovery.

We currently use two Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] appliances in our main data centre to backup and provide recovery assurance for our entire enterprise. We also use a couple of cold copy NFS backup targets for long term retention and to provide offsite storage for several of our important systems. We also use it for compliance reasons as it performs scheduled automatic restores of several systems weekly and emails the completed test results
  • VM backups work very well with or without backup agents. We have a catch all job configured so that any newly added VM's are automatically backed up without any further intervention
  • Instant restores have saved the day a couple of times where the appliance spun up a recovered VM on the appliance itself in minutes and got our web presence back online with minimal downtime
  • The thing I like best with Unitrends is that they have the best customer support I've experienced. They get back very quickly with a resolution and with their support tunnels they will often fix any issues remotely without me having to do anything other than open a support ticket
  • Bare metal restores work better than any of the competitors during our evaluation process. I thankfully haven't had to perform any aside from a couple tests but it's great to know they can be relied on
  • There is a bit of a learning curve especially with the SLA policies
  • I would appreciate if there were wizards or automated guides for setting up some of the jobs or cold copy targets
  • It would be nice if errors came with hyperlinks to related KB articles
Last year we had a failed Windows Update that took down our webserver and I was able to spin up an Instant Recovery VM from the last good backup within minutes [using Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery]. This VM started serving up webpages and I then migrated this running VM to our production VCenter and this VM is still in use to this day.

We currently use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery as our backup system for our physical and virtual servers, and once in a while for a workstation. So far we have about 12 servers being backed up on a daily basis and also monthly backups.
  • Their support is amazing. When I was having issues that I cannot figure out, they were able to help me in a very timely manner
  • Restoring servers was easy to do when we had a few cases in the last couple of years. It is scary to deal with a situation like this but once we start the process to recover, it works like a champ.
  • Their support is great. A huge reason for me to purchase a product is to have support. If I am in a pickle and I need help, I need to be able to contact someone to help me fix the issue.
  • Their console is difficult to navigate
  • They have constant updates on their agents, which can become annoying
  • I found that sometimes the view on the dashboard can take some time to see running jobs
Overall, Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery does a great job doing backups and notify you when there is a failure (if notifications are enabled). That gives us time to find the root of the problem and fix the issue. I used their support two or three times when I was in a pickle and the level of support was exceptional. Our IT team is small and we are not experts at everything, so we have to rely on good support when we run out of ideas.

We use it to back up VMware hosts and include backup copy for disaster recovery. We have implemented, ran audit tests and file recovery. This has been implemented for approximately a year in the current environment and I used it previously for approximately 15 years.
  • Virtual machines restore.
  • Audit test.
  • Incremental check points.
  • Updates are a little involved especially if you get too far outdated.
Cost effective compared to similar products. It works reliably and you don't need to watch the processes to make sure they complete as other with systems.

Used for DR at one large site. Backing up 20TB of data along with a handful of server images. Didn't get the appliance, went with the Hyper-V install on one of our servers. Also using their cloud product for off-site backups.
  • Responsive interface.
  • Knowledgeable and responsive support team.
  • Straightforward configuration.
  • Restore process is cumbersome and time-consuming.
  • Cataloging of data to prepare for off-site fulls seems overly length, support has no fix.
  • Agent updates require new fulls.
Requires more babysitting than I anticipated, so probably most appropriate for situations where IT staff has time to constantly monitor/tweak/update. Backups to the local storage are very reliable, but there always seems to be something required to keep off-site backups working properly.

We use two instances of Unitrends Data [Center Backup and Recovery] in two VMware clusters separated by a slow link. These instances are the core of our DR strategy. Virtual machines are being backed up nightly in most cases, but some are backed up multiple times a day. Some are then replicated to a "cold" storage device. The idea is to have the eggs in multiple baskets.
The virtual machines being backed up are linux of various flavors and Windows. Disk sizes range from from 10 GB to 12 TB. I am really impressed with the simplicity of Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery]. It just works!
  • Very reliable. We tried VDP and Veeam in the past and reliability was not a strong point for these competitors. It is a huge relief to have a backup system that just keeps on working.
  • Deduplication is working great and it does not consume a lot of CPU resources. This is a great asset and allows running Unitrends Data Backup without allocating a large slice of resources from production loads.
  • Disk access requirements are fairly low. This is very valuable, because implementing Unitrends data backup does not require investment in new data storage, capable of high IOPS. We have it running on non-accelerated RAID that is capable of around 3-4k IOPS and there are no complaints.
  • Low network requirements. Deduplication is done inline, reducing network traffic. The replication of our VM backups is happening over a 1 G link and the traffic is not noticeable.
  • I would like to see a feature where the Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] adds a newly created virtual machine automatically to a new backup schedule based on some criteria like a tag. As it stands today, auto selection is only based on name of the VM and the job is assigned to an already existing schedule.
  • Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] has a File Level Recovery feature. A single file can be recovered from a Windows server, without the need to restore the entire machine. I would like to have this functionality for Linux machines as well.
I can't imagine a scenario where Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] would not be suited. It is lightweight, fast and very reliable. It is capable of instant recovery as well as file level recovery. It is very versatile in terms of storage repositories, from external HDD all the way to cloud repositories...

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] is used by our corporate headquarters.

It allows for us to have a safe and secure off-site data recovery environment in the event of a catastrophic event.

It also allows for recovery of data should it accidentally get purged or deleted from the Unitrends Appliance.
  • Security - Data is encrypted and kept in a secure data center.
  • Data is readily available 24x7.
  • Business disruption is minimally impacted.
  • They need to allow for the managing and deleting of older backups as they continue to use unnecessary space.
  • Unitrends allows for all or nothing. Either a backup of say an SQL DB remains forever or gets deleted entirely and once deleted, it cannot ever be backed up to the data center again.
  • This nonsense of no management of the data leads to continuous data growth which eventually will grow past a companies contracted size limit. This leads to more expense on the part of the client. Nothing more than a great money maker for Unitrends!
If Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] would allow the client to manage their archived data, it would be an ideal environment. The fact that once a DB backup, File Level backup, etc is requested to be deleted, it then becomes an issue because the client can never backup that DB, etc to the Data Center again.

On the other hand, leaving all that archived data out there forever only allows for growth greater that what the client has contracted for and now becomes an additional expense.

This is not discussed by Unitrends during the negotiation period! Just a cash cow for Unitrends!

We are utilizing Unitrends MSP as are new standard backup solution both internally and as the primary offering to our Managed Services clients. It addresses both cost sensitivity with our clients compared to its competitors and provides us a confident solution we can stand behind to deploy everywhere.
  • Compatibility with every system our clients and new engaged clients can potentially run.
  • multiple backup methods mean we have options if a particular system is having issues (usually on new clients before we can get them fixed up).
  • Management and monitoring are clear and concise via the portal and works with solutions like Backup Radar and RMM.
  • Email reporting and configuration is a bit light.
  • Deployments may require using SSH and editing config files manually for settings that could be tucked in an advanced menu in the UI.
Unitrends is a very well suited backup solution for MSPs requiring diverse support for client systems, backup methods and storage. Its only 'cons' are that it does require some more technical knowledge of Linux, in particular, to potentially get deployments running smoothly and reporting nicely to other tools; and that deployments can sometimes be a bit rocky requiring a bit of troubleshooting to get things sorted between the appliance and agents, especially going into less than healthy client environments.

We back up every Windows server we manage using Unitrends, 75 servers across 35 clients, replicated to 3 different hosts in our offsite datacenter. We are able to virtualize every server both locally and in the cloud, providing total resiliency to our clients.
  • Management of all appliances can be done from 1 pane of glass.
  • Detailed and easy to read email reports make verifying operations very easy.
  • Centralized software updates for all appliances.
  • Better and more detailed logging in the MSP console.
  • Inclusion of access verification (virtual boot tests) in MSP console.
  • More consistent results in various reporting views.
Well suited when flexibility is required for the type of hardware you want to use for local and offsite backups. Will work with anything that can host a VMware or Hyper-V virtual machine.

We have used Unitrends for over 5 years now. It has been a great product and is very price competitive. We had an event where our primary SAN with over 20 servers on it failed. We were able to restore the primary domain servers and main production servers within a couple hours, and the remaining servers within a day or two. Most users were not even aware of the outage. Love the product!

We have an onsite appliance that backups up all of our data center (virtual machines and physical machines), these backups are then replicated out to a cloud provider to another Unitrends appliance for offsite disaster recovery. This allows us to have good local backups that we can restore quickly if needed but also allows us to have an offsite recovery point if we were to face a total loss.
  • Reliable - always works.
  • Quick - It's able to do a restore, especially of virtual machines, very quickly and even directly on the backup appliance if needed.
  • Cloud Options - Really useful as offsite disaster recovery.
  • File Level Recovery - While it works well the interface could be better.
  • Automated Verification - Again while it works it could be better and more "hands off."
This is a great backup solution and would work well in any environment in my opinion, however, it is expensive so for smaller businesses it may be out of reach.

It is our primary backup solution. We use it for everything backup related.
  • Backup VMs.
  • Backup file level.
  • Backup SQL and exchange.
  • Slow restore points.
  • Attaching backup targets.
  • Can't pause job for more important situations.

We use it in our organization as a primary backup appliance, and it is being used across our entire company. This addresses our need for instant recovery of data.
  • VM backup
  • Cloud backup
  • File leaves backups for fast recovery of data
  • Better support portal interface. It was very difficult to register with the new platform
  • Would like the ability to see pertinent help information on the individual page you are on.
Well, we use It for all of our production backups. We are a small company, so we only need one appliance and the Unitrends product does this very well.
