We use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery in our organization by applying 5 different backup policies. Its ease of use and flexibility are pleasing. In terms of usage example, it can be explained in 3 steps as 1- Local backup policies 2- Disaster recovery policies 3 Cloud site to site backup policies.

We use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery for all our backup and disaster recovery needs. We use Unitrends for the whole organization. We backup 9 Windows servers. We also have cloud retention through Unitrends for our mission-critical files and SQL database. Unitrends has been a truly set it and forget it backup solution without near as much interaction needed as previous solutions I have used. Email reports are to the point and don't overload my inbox for each backup, but give me a summary that I can glance at and tell in just a minute if all backups were successful.
  • Easy setup
  • Easy job setup
  • Easy restore
  • I find it difficult to see how much space each backup is taking
  • Way easier to just set up to backup files on a device instead of the whole device without getting a warning message
Unitrends has a friendly interface that allows for seamless, easy restores and easy monitoring. I can restore files in just a few click with options of either in the original location or to a new location. I get daily emails that show the results of the backups and if any have warnings. From my experience, and lack is that it seems difficult to find out how much space a particular backup is taking. Also, I would like to backup just some files on a device and if I select that I get a warning the the device isn't being backup up completely and no obvious way to shut off the warning.

We use it for backups and cloud backups across the organization. For us, we have to do end-of-year processes before we can conduct business the following year. This includes creating backups of business-critical databases. We have to keep these for at least 7 years and the Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery cloud is one location where we keep these.
  • On-premises is great because when we lose our internet connection, the backups still function properly.
  • Onboarding was fast and thorough.
  • Chat support is easily understandable. It doesn't seem like they outsource that to other call centers.
  • The pricing beat most other competitors, which was most important to us.
  • There are 2 different UI's. There have been improvements, so the old UI might have been phased out.
  • There are tunnel issues at times when needing support. Nothing that happens regularly enough though.
  • Sometimes, I have to run a new full backup to get a successful backup to complete.
We are a pretty small organization, so I believe it will benefit others like ours. We have about 8 servers and 25 desktops being backed up.

We’ve been working with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery mainly as our server backup system and we used it for datastore replication, archive, and instant data recovery as well. Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery works well with multi-domain controllers, and it helps to separate the main storage and other critical software and run smoothly in different servers. A trusted backup system is a must when it comes to financial data and Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery always delivers good results without fail. Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery virtual appliance helps to back up by running on a completely virtual environment. Their user interfaces are pretty simple, and it's deduplication allows us to restore lots of older backups as well.
  • It has fully automated and customizable dashboards that can run with less administrative attention.
  • It should be able to run on virtual machines or be deployed as a virtual machine within MS Azure or AWS.
  • It's AI-based ransomware detection helps to understand data characteristics and alerts for ransomware attacks.
  • Automated failover and copy data management security are only available with the 'Enterprise Plus' plan.
  • More flexible subscription plans would be helpful for small to medium businesses to use their services.
  • It feels like data recovery takes a bit longer to process and there wasn't an option to restore them to a different drive.
Application restorations will be tested fully automatically and measures what the actual recovery time is and what the recovery points are. It's analysis compliance with service-level agreements and also identifies any potential threats to data recovery. If the system identifies an issue, then it will notify the user and will recommend steps for correcting those issues. Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery provides fully automated and customizable dashboards which require less administrative interaction on a day-to-day process.

I am using Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] for my VDI infrastructure. I back up servers and all the desktops. It is an ideal solution for backing up VM's, and it has also allowed me to use some older storage I had lying around. It performs well, reports its doing well, [and] I like how easy it is to upgrade. I also like that it comes as an appliance - that was a major selling factor for me. The interface is not bad, but it's not intuitive either. Some concepts are hard to understand and implement.
  • It backs up VM's pretty quickly.
  • I like that it is appliance-based as it is much easier and cheaper to deploy that way.
  • It is very simple to upgrade.
  • It runs well with older storage hardware. I was able to put some older NAS devices to use.
  • Some of the concepts, like replication, are very confusing.
  • What I think are simple setup things can end up being a tech call.
I am using two different backup solutions. I use Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] to back up my virtual machines and the other products to backup data. I have my reasons. What I like about Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] for backing up VM's is the ease of backing them up. No agents, no nothing. Just a simple connection to the vcenter server. It works great. I also like that Unitrends isn't really picky about storage. I'm using a couple of old Netgear NAS units for backup. I don't try to keep everything; I only keep a couple of copies of the backups. I don't really want the image to be too old. My main purpose with VM backups is when I lose a lot of VM's all at once (done that), this is a good, cheap insurance.

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery backs up our primary servers only. The cost per megabyte is too high to back up all of our PCs. Backups are kept on site (we don't use the cloud). We have replication going to a separate facility that we own. We also use the archive device to copy backups to hard drives that can be removed from the main facility.
  • Automation backup schedule
  • Speed of backup
  • Speed of recovery
  • Complication of navigating the user interface
  • Frequent backup problems on client servers (errors)
  • Frequent updates to install
For a large data center with multiple servers, Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery does well. Deduplication works well. On the downside, the cost per megabyte compared to alternative backups is high. The user interface is complicated to use at first. Tech support needs to be called at times to learn functionality that changes between updates.

Unitrends is being used as our primary backup application and key part of our DR and BC plan. It currently is backing up all our on-prem servers and important workstations. We use it across the entire organization and backup approximately 70 different machines. We were able to sunset our tape backup (a very manual process) and keep our data safe in the Unitrends cloud as well as on the recovery appliance itself.
  • Easy to deploy.
  • Reporting.
  • Managing jobs.
  • The recovery of specific items on file level backups can be tedious to find.
  • Support by phone.
  • Better logs for why items failed.
Right now, I would say 7. I think this score is generous considering an issue that happened in their data center where they lost all of our cloud backups for a period of time because of a hardware error on their side. We were credited a year worth of storage costs back, but that could have been a big issue if we needed the data. If you have multiple servers/workstations you need to backup and you just want to set something that just overall works well and you don't have to baby sit very often, then Unitrends is a good choice. Although deployment was easy with agents when we first set it up we had to go back 2 months later and redo a whole bunch of backups and change the backup types because of long backup jobs never finishing or catching up. I think if the implementation team would have spent a little more time on the type of servers and what we were backing up this could have been avoided.

We are currently using Unitrends as the backup and recovery for our on site servers. We have two domain controllers, an app server, a network attached storage server, and a server that runs some other service critical software. It gives us a trusted backup and recovery ability that we didn't have in previous products that were used. Being able to restore down to a single file was essential for us to have for some departments, such as finance, in case there was ever an issue with any data loss. We also have a secondary device that copies of the backups are stored for redundancy in our backup and recovery solution.
  • The setup of the device is very straightforward and simple. It's not confusing when configuring the backup device.
  • Adding assets to the system is very easy. The Unitrends agent that enables the backup of devices is simple to install. Once it is installed, you move on to creating a job for backing up the asset, which is also simple to setup.
  • Looking at the whether backup jobs are successful has a well laid out UI. You can filter by almost anything you want to find specific jobs or assets to check on the backups that were made.
  • Errors on backup jobs could be more clearly explained. As the administrator of the device for my company, I often don't know what caused an error, and can't tell from the error information what happened or caused the error.
  • Updates of the devices should have an automatic option. It takes to much time to do an update to the devices if updates haven't been maintained.
  • Shutdown and restarting the device should be available from the main UI screen to eliminate some time when doing updates or if you're doing some maintenance on the device.
If you have on-site servers and want a reliable backup and recovery system, then Unitrends is very well suited to the task. Easy setup, easy configuration, and ease of maintenance make it a quality system to implement in your on site data center. The speed of the backups also make the system very expedient when it comes to the backups that it does of your servers and workstations.

We use a Unitrends virtual appliance at our company to back up our entire virtual environment, all VMs. The user interface is pretty intuitive and the deduplication allows a lot of historic backups to be stored.
  • Ease of use.
  • Reliability of backups.
  • Restore options.
  • Better and easier removeable drive options for manual off site backups.
  • Faster recovery times.
  • More failsafe prompts to prevent overwriting existing VMs upon restore.
I would strongly recommend Unitrends based on its ability and ease of use and value. It is a professional, inexpensive backup product with good support. Fairly easy to set up and maintain. I like the hardware flexibility in using the virtual appliance as well as the cost savings. I feel it is well suited for mid to large size companies with 5 or more servers to back up.

Unitrends is used for backing up our on premise data across the organization. The primary function is recovery of lost or accidentally deleted files from our file server. In the event of an environmental disaster it creates offsite and cold copies of critical data and infrastructure. If a server were to become corrupt we could rebuild it from a backup vs having to start from scratch.
  • Centralized backup management
  • Easy cloud integration
  • The new interface is very user friendly
  • Better Active Directory integration
  • More storage options
  • Faster customer support
For keeping VM backups in three different locations it is great. If you want better Active Directory integration there are better options available. However the Unitrends pricing cannot be beat by other solutions we have looked into. After the new user interface it has been easy for me and my colleagues to run jobs and make changes to jobs. It is much more intuitive than it use to be. Before the GUI was changed we were seriously considering switching to a different solution.

We use our Unitrends Backup appliance as our primary backup tool for the entire school/business.<br>We do nightly backups of critical data as well as daily backups to external media that is shipped off-site weekly (on a 4-week rotation).<br>It's used for DR and for individual file recovery as needed.
  • Reports are helpful for general monitoring.
  • Adding new assets is simple.
  • Interface is fairly intuitive.
  • Mostly "set it and forget it".
  • Error detail reports are still fairly cryptic.
  • More options for reporting format would be nice (graphs, charts, etc).
  • 3rd party cloud storage options would be welcome.
The appliance is well suited for simple and reliable on-premise back-up. The addition of an external dock or Cloud backup allows for off-site options. A nice, low-maintenance solution for small/mid-sized environments. We don't use the larger appliances or Unitrends's cloud solution so I can't speak to the quality of those.

Whole organization.
4 business units in 4 different Midwest states.
It is our backup & recovery tool set.
  • Easy to install and set up.
  • Easy to implement AD security.
  • Handles basic functions...easily.
  • GUI interface is very slow (for many features). GUI interface is incomplete; pieces of information that are desired are sometimes not available.
  • Buggy code. We have become something of a testing ground for them. We have discovered bugs and they have tested out new features and fixes in our environment.
  • Poor notification on failures and problems with the product.
Smaller organization that does not have a wide variety of platforms to backup.
I believe their target is the small market.

We currently use Unitrends as our main backup appliance/system both at our main office and as replication target at a branch office. We use it across the entire organization and have had no issues besides minor instances, of which their support staff quickly resolve for us. It allows us to back up our entire file server, various servers, exchange database, and everything else in our environment that's needed.
  • Very intuitive interface and admin console.
  • Quickly restores backups to intended targets.
  • Compression is great which allows for more space to be utilized.
  • Instant recover quickly gets a server back up for temp purposes.
  • Frequency of updates.
  • Sorting of some columns/sections could be better.
  • Helping admins better understand differences in back up schema.
Unitrends seems to shine in medium to larger environments and has the resources and space to allow for massive amounts of data. It allows for quick backing up of data and quick restores. The replication is smooth as well. I'm not entirely sure how well this system would integrate into a small business setting due to size/costs.

We use Unitrends for our enterprise backup solution. It is used to backup servers at our primary data center as well as a few servers located in other places. This allows us to perform server backups and replicate them to a secondary data center.
  • Allows for backup of physical and virtual servers.
  • Performs database backups where SQL server is involved.
  • Allows recovery of an entire server or individual files as requested from users.
  • After recovering files to a CIFS share it is not easy to delete the files after you are finished with them.
  • Inside the backup and restore dashboard some of the options are named similarly and it can be easy to confuse them sometimes (Recover files vs. File Level Recovery vs Instant Recovery).
  • It can sometimes take a while for replication to complete but that is influenced by the connection speed.
We have been able to use Unitrends to restore an entire server after Windows updates failed to install correctly. We were able to take the backup from a physical server then create a virtual server and restore from the backup then use the virtual server going forward. We have also been able to use the bare-metal recovery when a server died about a month after implementing Unitrends.

Unitrends MSP is used across our entire client base. We manage multiple Unitrends appliances with local and both private and public cloud-based backups. The application provides management and reporting across our entire client base and saves considerable time over accessing each client's appliance individually. That lets us provide better service to our clients and saves us time and money.
  • Integration with Kaseya VSA
  • Single "pane of glass" management across [the] entire client base
  • Outstanding customer support, very responsive
  • Good value for features
  • Intuitive interface, easy to use and manage
  • More details and options on alerts
  • Better reporting. more logging information
  • More control over restore options
This is a solid product and particularly well suited for smaller managed service providers without a large support staff. We have several co-managed IT clients and we can share control with the client's internal IT staff without exposing them to any of our other [client's] systems. It works really well in a VMware environment for both backups and restoration. This may not be a suitable solution for environments with large backup requirements with time constraints. The cloud backup feature works well but requires a suitable amount of bandwidth to operate effectively. We had to increase the speed, and cost, of our Internet connection to allow efficient cloud backup performance.

Our organization uses Unitrends for our on-premises disaster recovery solution. While we have some services that are cloud-based, those have their own disaster recovery mechanisms. Unitrends provides a very good 1-2-3 solution for our aging on-premises servers and has been invaluable as a peace of mind solution allowing for simple roll-back capabilities during upgrades as well as secure knowledge that all core systems are safe if disaster should strike.
  • Integration with SQL Server databases for full and incremental backups
  • Agents are easily deployed and upgraded for VM hosts
  • Pulling backups and either deploying or performing in-place restore jobs is straight-forward and intuitive
  • Regular reports of success/failed backup jobs makes managing any issues easy to diagnose
  • Like other solutions, Unitrends does require [the] use of agents for hypervisor hosts and database servers
  • There is an upfront cost for the on-premises hardware (though they do allow you to roll your own)
  • Some on-premises configurations need to be done via console/SSH rather than through the web interface (such as setting up TLS)
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery has been very well-suited to ensuring secure backups of all of our on-premises servers. Using its agents, it is able to seamlessly backup our SQL Server databases, virtual machines, and their hosts (both Windows and Linux) and has proven to be capable [of] quickly restoring existing backups. Once the initial configuration is completed and the backup schedules are optimized, it runs in the background with virtually no attention required.

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] was used across most of our IT infrastructure as basic Backup and Recovery.
  • Not a huge learning curve
  • Fairly good UI
  • Client agent was not resource-intensive
  • Sadly, [we] had a HUGE need for [the] daily administration.
  • Our appliance was not super-stable and would hang and crash often requiring a restart.
  • Reporting could be better, there were some more useful things in the old UI that were not apparent in the new one.
The regular backups did work ok and they were not too difficult to set up and manage. But the appliance itself seemed to have all kinds of issues from drive failures to Database corruption to a variety of other errors we'd see. We felt it required way way way too much daily administration.

We use [Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] to handle backups for the entire organization. It allows us to set our own schedules at the levels we want, and create backup copies that can be stored offsite as well as in the cloud.
  • Speed of recovery
  • Backup Copies
  • Decent user interface
  • The add-on appliance that we use for backup copies has a single fan speed that can be VERY loud. Variable fan speeds would be a big plus.
[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] seems to cover all the bases, from basic server imaging to granular database-level backups.

My Unitrends Recovery Series performs incremental backups on a flexible schedule to accomplish our recovery goals. We can recover to dissimilar hardware, a virtual machine, or simply grab a few files out of a backup if that is what we need. We also use it to store copies of our data offsite. We can test our disaster recovery plans, as well as test individual backups. Our organization relies on it to protect the business in the case of a disaster.
  • Incremental Forever Backups -- Only one full required.
  • Data Deduplication -- More backups are able to fit on the appliance.
  • Price is high relative to others.
  • It is easy to sacrifice capacity to get a lower price -- which means the unit is too small in years to come.

Unitrends has always worked well in my mostly Windows environment. The documentation is well written and informative for all of the scenarios that I've run into, and if it doesn't answer my question or my environment is different, support has always been there to answer those questions. Support is highly recommended as the engineers are very familiar with the product and they go above and beyond for their customers.

The new interface is a large improvement over the old flashed based one.

Unitrends can backup a variety of applications, but be aware that while Exchange and SharePoint can be restored by Unitrends, to do single item recovery requires an additional third party license (Kroll OnTrack) which at the time of purchase wasn't super clear and caused a bit of a kerfuffle during an incident that we had to recover some individual mail items.

Legal Hold is a feature that is likely to cause lots of issues if you use it without fully understanding it. It isn't a bad feature, but a lack of space and not planning for legal hold will cause lots of backups to fail.

We use our fantastic Unitrends appliance as our primary backup for our Windows servers, Cisco phone system and a few desktops. We have select servers set to use the Instant Recovery feature which would allow us to spin up a virtual machine from a backup and use it in production.
  • Ease of use.
  • Retention policies that are easy to understand and implement.
  • Updating the backup client is very easy.
  • Support was lackluster last year.
  • The new user interface is still missing key features that the old interface had.
  • The new web interface is not intuitive.
Unitrends is great as a "set it and forget it" software. When it is working you can rest easy. When it isn't working sometime support struggles to fix the issue but I've always had my problems solved, it just may take awhile.

We currently utilize Unitrends across our organization as our backup solution for multiple building servers and services. In the past we have utilized it to restore deleted or corrupted data on shared drives from data servers and to restore SQL databases. These tasks were incredibly simple to do using Unitrends. We really like the ability to do file level recovery. This is useful when a staff member or student accidentally deletes a few files from a shared drive or folder. We don't necessarily want to restore an entire server or drive, so it's nice that we can path into the backup and grab just the missing files that we need. The SQL restore was great as well. It not only restored the database but also setting involved with the application that the database was associated with. This made restoring the corrupted server extremely simple.
  • File level restoration.
  • SQL Database restoration.
  • Managing multiple backup routines.
  • The new user interface seems to be missing some of the functionality of the old interface.
  • Better organization in the interface.
Unitrends is great for file level recovery and database recovery. As stated previously, we have used Unitrends extensively for that and it has performed great. Unitrends is especially useful for physical servers as well. Unitrends full backups are slightly unnecessary now with virtual servers though. Most of our virtual servers now just have their VM's cloned on a schedule for backups. This means when a server goes down, we can just restore it from the clone and be back up and running within minutes. Unitrends still is useful though on those servers for individual file recovery.

Used for DR at one large site. Backing up 20TB of data along with a handful of server images. Didn't get the appliance, went with the Hyper-V install on one of our servers. Also using their cloud product for off-site backups.
  • Responsive interface.
  • Knowledgeable and responsive support team.
  • Straightforward configuration.
  • Restore process is cumbersome and time-consuming.
  • Cataloging of data to prepare for off-site fulls seems overly length, support has no fix.
  • Agent updates require new fulls.
Requires more babysitting than I anticipated, so probably most appropriate for situations where IT staff has time to constantly monitor/tweak/update. Backups to the local storage are very reliable, but there always seems to be something required to keep off-site backups working properly.

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] is used by our corporate headquarters.

It allows for us to have a safe and secure off-site data recovery environment in the event of a catastrophic event.

It also allows for recovery of data should it accidentally get purged or deleted from the Unitrends Appliance.
  • Security - Data is encrypted and kept in a secure data center.
  • Data is readily available 24x7.
  • Business disruption is minimally impacted.
  • They need to allow for the managing and deleting of older backups as they continue to use unnecessary space.
  • Unitrends allows for all or nothing. Either a backup of say an SQL DB remains forever or gets deleted entirely and once deleted, it cannot ever be backed up to the data center again.
  • This nonsense of no management of the data leads to continuous data growth which eventually will grow past a companies contracted size limit. This leads to more expense on the part of the client. Nothing more than a great money maker for Unitrends!
If Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] would allow the client to manage their archived data, it would be an ideal environment. The fact that once a DB backup, File Level backup, etc is requested to be deleted, it then becomes an issue because the client can never backup that DB, etc to the Data Center again.

On the other hand, leaving all that archived data out there forever only allows for growth greater that what the client has contracted for and now becomes an additional expense.

This is not discussed by Unitrends during the negotiation period! Just a cash cow for Unitrends!
