How we use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery: disk to disk (I have two appliances) and then disk to LTO7 robotic tape library for entire organization.

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is the fastest and most reliable backup software I have ever used. I have been in this industry since the '80s and am very impressed by their product and their support.
  • Reliable backups that do not need babysitting--set and go--send daily reports to email.
  • Their default "Incremental Forever" backup does the trick for most backups; easy to set up.
  • Recovery is very simple.
  • Speed--one of the faster backup programs I've seen. Even writing to LTO tapes is fast.
  • Agent updates could have an option to auto update and roll back a version.
  • Possibly interpret errors in easier to read language for novices. I can see where that could be an issue.
  • As pricey as these appliances are, one would think a hat or T-shirt should be included (LOL). You get what you pay for, though! I'm super pleased with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery (even without the hat).
I cannot think of a scenario where Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is not an asset. I've run some of the top backup solutions available, and Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is easier to set up and operate, faster, and more reliable. Online documentation is good and support is great. And licensing is perfect--so much better than all the rest.

I currently manage several implementations of Unitrends products for several companies. In all instances, the devices are being used to back up critical company data. We use it to restore data that may have been accidentally erased or deleted as well as part of the disaster recovery plan. All the data backed up to the on premise device is then synchronized to the Forever Cloud.

I use Unitrends products because they have proven to work flawlessly in every situation where data was lost and needed to be restored. The speed in which data is restore is extremely fast and the GUI is easy to use. The ease of use is also a main reason why I recommend these products. I can show someone how to restore data from a backup with minutes.
  • Extremely reliable.
  • Easy to use.
  • Great product support.
  • Color coding of the back information where we can see full or differential backups.
  • Having to filter through a range of backups to simply see that latest backups.
Unitrends devices as part of a disaster recovery plan are essential because of the Forever Cloud that allows you retrieve your data to another location and all it requires is access to the internet. In case that the on premise device is no longer working, the Forever Cloud is always available.

We are using Unitrends for the entire organization. We use it to back up our internal data center in our corporate office. We have a VMWare environment with several servers running on it and we use Unitrends to back up our VMWare environment and hosts.
  • Support.
  • Software updates.
  • Ease of use.
  • I honestly have not come across any cons at this time. Every feature I use works as expected.
I believe it is best suited to backup an on-site data center environment. You can easily schedule and backup to local media or to the Unitrends Cloud. We use it to backup to an on-site NAS device. As for a scenario where it is less appropriate, although we are not doing this, I would suspect if you were backing up up a remote device over a WAN connection.

We use Unitrends to back up our entire VM infrastructure. With Unitrends, backing up 50TB+ is a breeze. The software intelligently snaps the VM and backs up the data. We can now run an incremental backup every hour without compromising processor or memory utilization. File level restores are also a breeze with just three simple steps. You can search the entire database for a single file, and the system knows which backup to automatically mount and restore the file. Everything is web based so you can access your backups and see progress from any device. Long gone are the days of worrying if a backup was successful or when it will finish.
  • SQL and large databases are no longer an issue to back up.
  • Searching and restoring files are a breeze.
  • Setting retention policies and placing backup holds is no longer a complicated process.
  • Replicating the backups to a DR site is simple.
  • It’s hard to find something that is missing in this software.
  • New users to the software will not be intimidated by using the web interface. Everything is laid out nicely.
I’ve used other software to back up our SQL server and the software was so intrusive we had to stop the SQL server to back up our large databases. Some days it would take more than 5 hours to backup which meant a lot of downtime. With Unitrends we no longer have to take any of our servers offline. This is a huge advantage of what we had before. No longer needing to take the VM offline also allows us to have more frequent backup and more reliable restores.

We are using Unitrends as our primary backup solution for our servers and IT infrastructure. It is exclusively used by the IT staff, and more specifically myself, and one other person. We are using one of their physical appliances to create both on-premise and off-premise backups, utilizing Unitrends' own cloud service that they offer. This cloud service also enables Disaster Recovery as a service functionality basically automatically. I can't really comment on that aspect too much as I have only just gotten the appliance put into place and have not done my test DR failover yet. On the other hand I have already had to use it to rescue some VM's from a host that died. It worked almost perfectly.
  • Value -- I was ultimately offered a very compelling package that included the appliance, cloud storage space, and the DRaas option all together for a very good deal.
  • Functionality -- I would say their software is definitely aimed at the more technical users -- while it is not difficult to use by any means, they definitely prioritize functionality and verbosity over ease of use. Personally, I am a fan of this style approach.
  • Company Culture -- I have only had the product in place for about a month, and was also involved with sales for about another month prior but I have a pretty good sense of the company culture. They are very technically inclined and not afraid to jump into the deeper technical aspects of the product. This also shows through in their documentation and support articles which go into a lot of detail and are actually very useful.
  • I am going to come back to the polish issue here as I think there is definitely some room for improvement in QA and overall finish -- don't get me wrong, it is not full of bugs by any means, rather it's "almost there."
  • Some of the data points that I think should be very easy to get ahold of are a bit difficult/buried. Stuff like what is the most recent backup available for a given host This should be a column available in many of the views where you are looking at your assets. Also how much storage a given asset is consuming across all of it's backups. I realize the deduplication makes this a bit tricky, but I am sure they could figure something out.
  • Automated and regular test restores of backups, although I do believe that this is coming soon.
  • I am a bit disappointed that when you have the appliance make an additional backup copy to a "Non Unitrends" storage device, it removes the deduplication and compression benefits so you aren't able to store much history externally unless you invest in a ton of space. I don't know if this is a push for you to get a second appliance so you can have it store the backups there, or what -- but I know it is possible as other vendors can backup to external storage with full inline dedup and compression.
Overall this is good software and when the crunch time comes, it works. That's definitely the most important, as a bunch of whiz bang features won't save you if it simply doesn't work. Their support is great, I have always had good experiences with them. The value was also really great, there is a lot included in a very fair price IMO. Couple of minor rough edges, but it's not things that will leave you in the cold.

We use it to back up several of our local virtual servers where our corporate data and plan participant claim data are housed. That data is then replicated remotely as part of our disaster recovery plan. Recovering files and even an entire OS is very easy. The interface is well constructed and easy to use.
  • Recover accidentally deleted files.
  • Set it and leave it. Very automated.
  • User interface is easy to use.
  • Nothing I can think of.
It's great for an SMB like us because we don't need to have a full-time IT person maintaining it all of the time. Once it's configured properly, it just does its thing and sends me a confirmation report daily that its backup operations completed. Definitely good for our annual SOC audit as well.

We are currently using a Unitrends [Data Center] Backup and Recovery appliance to backup our whole organization. This is the second appliance we have used as we upgraded to our current model a few years ago at renewal time. We use it to backup network files, SQL Server backups, and Exchange databases. After the initial setup, the appliance is mostly hands off. Recovering files is generally quick and easy although, thankfully, have not had to do it often.
  • Support is excellent
  • The appliance is well made and has worked as expected for years
  • The UI is simple and yet powerful
  • Would like to see it be a target for native SQL Server backups
[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] is well suited to a situation where one person takes care of all IT issues and does not have a lot of time to spend ensuring backups are being done properly. It is also works well in a Vmware environment or a mixed environment of physical and virtual servers.

We used the Unitrends Recovery 902 appliance to run our critical backups for our organization. Actually we use two of these devices at two different physical locations.
This allows for us to have off-site backups giving us not only regular backup recovery but disaster recovery as well.
Our units are configured where they back up the critical user files and servers and the location they reside and then an off-site backup is performed by the other unit giving us a thorough redundancy for data recovery.
  • Our device performs daily backups of user's critical files and servers.
  • We use a second Unitrends device to perform off-site backups from a different location.
  • Recovered files can be downloaded locally if necessary for quicker recovery of excessively large backup jobs.
  • I love the Unitrends product. But I don't care for the continuing cost of Cloud Backup.
  • Support runs out too quickly on the product.
  • Sometimes the console is difficult to use for single file recovery.
Works great for local backup solutions. We've had several instances over the years where we've recovered files that were accidentally deleted. We've also recovered files from a ransomware encryption attack. Completely voiding the issue where users only had to re-enter data from that morning.

We use a Unitrends appliance for our backup to disk solution. It replaced our older backup to tape solution that we had in place years ago and it protects all of our data and VM's. It has been ROCK SOLID. We have never had a major problem with the appliance, backups and restores are easy to manage and I am a big fan of the bare metal backups and restore process. Tech support is easy to reach and VERY knowledgeable. I never felt that I needed to deal with a tier one tech, then get bumped to tier two and finally tier three. I think that I have only had to be transferred once to get a technical problem resolved.
  • Bare metal restore.
  • File backup and restore.
  • Tech support.
  • Cloud backup. I just don't love the backup schedule and iteration limits.
My one knock on the product is its cloud backup solution. Yes, you can back up to the cloud but it's not a daily solution. It's monthly and that's just not sufficient for my needs. Maybe it has changed so please research this.

Unitrends backs up our server that we operate our estimating and accounting software, as well as our user folders and active directory.
We use it to back up 4 virtual servers, and the host (Hyper-V). The backups are stored on a NAS and backup copies to an external drive off of the NAS.
  • Scheduling jobs is made fairly easy.
  • Reporting of backups and protection is informative.
  • Error reporting in very detailed.
  • A switch to enable a basic/advanced or expert mode.
  • Offer more info by hovering the mouse over some of the choices in setting up a job that might help one decide which choice would better suit them.
  • In the backup catalog, make it easier to identify which backups are on which offsite storage media.
This works well for our relatively small office, as we backup less than a TB of data. It seems well suited for our needs, and I can see where it would also serve well on a much bigger scale. If you want a simple, easy to use interface, this product might be a little too complicated.

We use it across the whole organization. We use it for complete data backup and recovery of all servers and network storage. It is a huge part of our Disaster Recovery Plans. It addresses all of our backup and recovery needs, both onsite and offsite.
  • Once set up, it just works day in and day out, without fail. And it sends detailed status reports daily, via email or text messages.
  • New Servers are added automatically, and a backup plan is automatically selected. All we have to do is tweak it, if desired.
  • Recovery of files or entire servers are effortless.
  • The cloud backup and offsite backup options work wonderfully.
  • The extra ransomware/crypto malware detection and protection is very helpful.
  • This is a one-stop shop, for all data backup and recovery needs. Unitrends supports all Virtual Server Hypervisor Platforms, All E-Mail Systems/Servers and Databases, All Operating Systems, and the user interface is very intuitive.
  • In this stressful era we live in, you don't get any more care free than with Unitrends. This is the top shelf.
  • When swapping out the appliance with a newer model, it would be great if there was a cable to connect the old unit to the new unit and an automatic migration would occur. We have upgraded a few times over the last 13 years, and this is the only part where they could do better or simplify the process. This is NOT a complaint or a con, as this process is still easier than with all other backup systems.
Unitrends truly is a one-stop shop for backup and recovery. I cannot think of a backup/recovery scenario where Unitrends would not fit or would not be appropriate. Perhaps cost would be the only limiting factor. Although, Unitrends cost is very practical, there may be very small companies that would opt into less expensive options. But I would recommend it, even for those small companies, if their budget can afford it.

We are using the Unitrends appliance for a daily backup for certain servers for specific sites and using it forever cloud for DRaaS.
  • Secure & easy to use.
  • Machine and file level recovery.
  • Predefined reporting & job status alerts.
  • File level auditing.
  • Auto update the agent on VMs and physical assets.
  • More filters to specify backup jobs and monitoring tasks.
Easy to use, creating and manage backup jobs. We had several cases where users shared files got deleted, crashed, and requested local IT to retrieve the data. The local IT team restored the files by using the File Level recovery and provided requested data on time to the concerned department. Similarly, the solution helped to retrieve files from the forever cloud which is more than 90 days old and wasn't available in the local appliance due to the backup retention.

Allows us to have a centralized backup of the majority of our systems. We also have a multi-building campus that allows us to house the system outside of or main datacenter so that we have a slightly off-site backup. We have a mixed environment of Linux, Windows, and OSX.
  • Centralized interface
  • Easy single file recovery
  • Synthetic Backups
  • Deduplication
  • They dropped support for OSX
  • Ability to control firewall on the unit for PCI scans
Large customers with large amounts of data work [are] well-mainly for organizations that have non-complex environments. I find it overpriced for our smaller customers, like 3 and 5 user environments that have a lot of data but do not have the cash-flow to justify the Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery
backup software.

We use the unitrends product for company-wide backup and the ability to spin up a hot server on an as needed basis. We moved to this from multiple tape backup systems, the speed is better and the ability to have a "Hot" system in case of a server failure is remarkable.
  • Fast backup
  • Recovery capability
  • Instant up for a failed server
  • Price is high but it is worth the value
  • Capacity of our unit could be improved
  • Hot availability is a great feature.

The appliance is amazing. We use it across the entire environment to backup our mission critical servers and applications. There is a small learning curve, but you can set it and forget it knowing full well the device will contact you if there is a problem.

  • Support.
  • A simpler way of reporting which devices are in which jobs.

We currently use Unitrends Backup and Recovery to cover our entire infrastructure's disaster recovery needs. We use Citrix Hypervisor as our backbone for our infrastructure and backup VMs and MSSQL databases at the guest level. When we were sold Unitrends in April of 2018, we were told of their excellent Citrix Hypervisor (then Citrix XenServer) support. At the time, this wasn't entirely untrue, but we were sort of misled as to the capabilities of what were sold in that respect. We bought a Unitrends Recovery Appliance with 26TB of storage and proceeded to deploy it in our infrastructure. Only when it was all deployed did I realize that I could not add our Xen pool to the appliance as a backup source. It was then that I did a little research and found that all of the Xen backups have to be done by a backup appliance deployed in the Xen environment. This made our 26TB of storage that we bought on our appliance next to useless as we couldn't use that storage as backup storage for the Xen appliance. So we moved to guest VM backups at the file level and SQL backups, because those took advantage of our purchased storage. Some time passed and I did test out and use the Xen appliance a little bit. It worked great for the testing that I did, I just did not have storage for it. Now that we are on Citrix Hypervisor 8.2, it has become clear that Unitrends does not care about Citrix Hypervisor support. The last supported version is XenServer 7.3, which was released in December of 2017. Unitrends has moved to only support LTS released of Citrix Hypervisor, which is understandable from a development and support view. However, Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 LTSR has been released since August of 2020 and there has been NO update to the appliance and I have received answers that it is not on the roadmap. I cannot even get the current appliance to work because it checks the XenServer version when you try to add a hypervisor to it and because it is >7.3, it errors out with "Version not supported." I have 100 VMs and 4 SQL servers that need to be backed up, tested, and restored. This is a mammoth of a process when I'm using agent-level backups, especially when I could be communicating with 8 servers instead of 100 VMs. I'm left to conclude that Unitrends will not be supporting Citrix Hypervisor in the future and as our entire infrastructure runs on that, I will be evaluating competing solutions to replace it.
  • SQL backups.
  • File-level backups.
  • Hyper-V backups and restores.
  • Citrix Hypervisor support.
  • Samba 3.0 solution.
  • Windows security issue with appliance shares.
If you have a VMWare or Hyper-V shop, Unitrends will work great for you. They support hypervisor-level backups on these environments and they do work great (at least for Hyper-V, which is the only one of the two I have any experience with).

If, however, you are on any other hypervisor (especially Citrix Hypervisor), it would suit you better to find a different solution.

Unitrends was being used for my company's infrastructure backing up all of our servers as well as our files stores. We were using this in the whole company and have managed the virtual appliance for 3 years via our on site technical team. We were using this by the information technology team.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Backup of File storage.
  • Scalable.
  • Easy to use.
  • Consistent problems with VMware backups.
  • support does not help with advanced problems and tell you to work with VMware.
  • Difficult in triage with support team.
Unitrends is well suited for the company that would like to have internal backups on their hardware, but would like to have ease of access. This does still require a virtual appliance to be installed somewhere and if you are trying to pair this with your own internal drives, it is inexpensive.

We currently implement Unitrends as our Disaster Recovery equipment for our entire organization for our critical systems. This includes our phone system, servers, and user data. We use Unitrends on-prem equipment which backs us that data to the cloud.
  • Great support when needed.
  • Once installed, you don't have to constantly manage it.
  • Easy to restore data from backup.
  • Pricing could be better for education.
I feel like Unitrends could fit in well in many different scenarios except for extremely large backups - closer to the range of like Terabytes or Petabytes. It is very scalable and I feel it does very well in small environments.

It is being used by the whole organization doing file, image, VMware, and SQL backups across all servers.
  • Auto installing the Unitrends Agent.
  • Setup of the backups.
  • Integration with VSA.
  • Error reporting.
  • Maneuvering the backup catalog.
  • Cloud Backups.
Seems well suited for any enterprise-level organization with multiple servers running systems. Might be less suited for smaller businesses especially if they only have one server or a windows desktop running as a server.

It is used to backup our VMWare environment for a Records Management system for several area police departments.
  • Backs up reliably.
  • Gives good alerts when backups are successful.
  • When it stops working, a call to Unitrends support is necessary. There is very little a user can do to fix most problems.
  • Some functions are clumsy and hard to find.
It is OK for our current needs.

We currently utilize a Unitrends appliance at one of our locations and the associated cloud infrastructure as well. We are in the process of phasing the product line out of our environment for a gamut of reasons including but not limited to: the inability to manage our data in the cloud, appliance maintenance requiring Unitrends support.
  • Interface is great. Intuitive and easy to use.
  • Backups are efficient.
  • Offsite cloud replication is pretty slick.
  • The appliance requires monthly/quarterly intervention.
  • Even with a daily digest, we figured out the appliance was in a failed state by chance. This resulted in 22 days of lost data.
  • The support staff is either incredible or awful. Last go around they wiped our appliance accidentally.
As someone who has been in the industry for 23 years, I don't know how anyone can feel good about the Unitrends platform long term. The appliance itself just does not have our trust. Sales staff/most of the support engineers have been great. But for a small/medium business we do not have the manpower to babysit a product line like this.
