We use the Unitrends [Data Center] Backup and Recovery for the whole organization. It provides not only file level recovery, but full whole recovery and Disaster Recovery as well.
  • Unitrends quickly performs block level backup of all our data
  • The web interface makes setting up backup schedules simple and easy to maintain
  • The entire product is so intuitive that you can have everything up and going in 1 day
  • Managing the credentials for differing systems could be stream lined a little more
  • As fast as the backups are, there's always room for going faster
  • clearing the notifications can sometime be tedious
For small to medium sized businesses this is an amazing product. For larger organizations, I don't see why it would have any issues scaling up.

We love the Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] appliance, we use it to backup or Virtual Machines. It's very easy to use and such a step up from our previous solution, Beckup Exec.

We use Unitrends backup for local backups as well as cloud backups of all our server VMs and stand alone servers. These included everything from Windows 2008 R2 server through Windows 2019 Server, as well as some Windows 10 VMs and a couple of different LINUX VMs including SUSE Linux and Ubuntu Linux.
  • Once set up, there it is totally unattended. Nothing more to do. Set up the schedule and configure the backups and let it run.
  • Nice web based console for all configuration and setup. It is really easy to use and organized in a way that makes sense.
  • Very thorough reporting options, including daily and on-demand reports, as well as automated notification of completed jobs as well as notification of any errors.
  • Fairly easy to restore a VM, as well as instant recovery options.
  • VMs can be recovered to the appliance itself for testing backups or even run there in emergencies.
  • If there are errors during backups, it can take a bit to determine why the error occurred. Most time it is due to the server configuration, or something on the device being backed up, but I wish it was clearer why and error occurred.
  • Retention policies are extremely versatile, but personally, I do find it can be confusing. Fortunately, once set the way you want, there is really no need to change these regularly.
  • I do wish that client agent updates could be handled better from the console. I usually end up just installing the update manually on each VM/Server.
Having a backup appliance on site to back up many servers and VMs all running different operating systems is very convenient. A hardware solution, that is almost plug-and-play, and that doesn't require building a server and installing software, is really nice. If you require offsite backups, then being able to do cloud backups directly from the appliance is a great feature. Being a Linux based solution, that includes ransomware detection and notification makes it a complete package.

We have been using Unitrends Backup for the past four years in an education environment. We currently run incremental forever backups on all our servers and replicate them to an offsite appliance. We have had several recoveries as a result of malware or phishing attempts and each recovery has been painless. Down for less than two hours, the time it took to restore from backup. I can confidently recommend Unitrends as a backup solution for anyone who wants to move to a "set it and forget it" backup scheme.

As I read through some of the other reviews of Unitrends on the TrustRadius site, I see than some of the lesser reviews indicate there are issues with the Unitrends hardware or appliances, consumer grade drives, etc. We deployed Unitrends on two HP DL380s, both with over 30 TB of usable storage, one for our local data center and one for our disaster recovery site. Our annual support costs are minimal, as I understand maintenance on the Unitrends appliances are considerably higher. We get all the benefits of Unitrends backup and recovery while using our own internally supported hardware. Couldn't be easier.
  • Recovery.
  • Peace of mind.
  • Speed.
  • Compliance.
  • Very infrequent but sometimes backups must be recreated.
  • UI could be more customizable.
  • Backup reporting could use more detail.
Unitrends Backup should be deployed where backups should be readily available and ease of use is required. With more than 25 years in the industry, I have yet to find an easier solution to set up and configure. It just works.

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is used as our primary backup and recovery device for all of our servers (physical/virtual VMware) across the entire organization. It is used for backup and recovery and addresses the issues of business continuity, disaster recovery, and protection from ransomware and malware. Backup jobs are scheduled to run hourly, daily, or weekly, depending on how critical it is to get the server backed up.
  • It works for the most part
  • Has included software for Exchange recovery
  • Is compatible with the server technologies that we use
  • Has dedupe and compression abilities that maximize capacity usage
  • Better backup and restore IO performance
  • Better upload speed performance to the Unitrends Cloud offering
  • Faster software upgrade process and more stable software releases
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery works for the most part and is generally easy to use; performance is not great but gets the job done. The underlying platform can be finicky at times, but technical support is excellent. You usually get a North-America-based support person who's knowledgeable and helpful right away and can help you resolve your issue fairly quickly. I have confidence that my issue will be resolved in a timely manner every time I call in to support. However, a backup system should really be stable--set it and forget it--and not require the number of calls that I have had to make, given my environment is fairly small and not that complex.

We have the 833 appliance and we use it to backup our existing 10+ physical servers and 100+ VMware VMs. We are backing up everything from our File server, Exchange, SQL to SharePoint and local apps servers. We also backup select items to the Unitrends cloud for archiving beyond 2 weeks. Before Unitrends, we were using another backup suite on an old server and rotating NAS devices home to get them offisite on a biweekly basis. We were running out of space and patience. Unitrends has been a great addition to our infrastructure! It was easy to implement and has been rock solid for 3 years.
  • Restores are a dream. Select the day, select the content and restore. Couldn't be easier.
  • Has 4 NIC ports that you can aggregate for more throughput.
  • The UI is very simple to work with. They updated it recently and it is even simpler. You don't have to fumble through a menu. Everything is in front of you and laid out logically.
  • If you want to recover something from exchange, that is a separate piece of software. Wish that was integrated.
  • There are four extra HD slots on our appliance that you cannot expand to. Would be great if they allowed the appliance to be filled and re-striped.
  • A little annoyance is that the appliance doesn't have a faceplate. That could just be my issue though.
If you have servers or client machines that you want to backup, Unitrends is for you. There are newer systems out there with all flash but the UI on Unitrends could not be easier and that is a huge selling point. The ROI is also better than most. They also have a lot of great, free tools that you will benefit from.

Unitrends is being used by the Information Technology Department to backup the organizations servers to a backup cloud location. This solves the business continuity requirements that we have as an organization, therefore, providing a safety net for our business. This allows us to not only have our data off-site in the cloud, but also allows us to have another machine within our own data closet to have a copy of our data. Therefore, this allows us to have a multi-point strategy for pulling our data back depending on the what goes wrong.
  • Easy onboarding process and personnel available to help you get started.
  • Easy to use software.
  • Automatic Business Continuity Testing.
  • Price point was bad, but rep made it good!
  • Features are all there. Sometimes a little hidden, but not hard to figure out.
I don't know where they would not or could not be used. Unitrends solution can find the right model for your use case and allows for flexibility no matter what size you are. Many of our Business Units utilize Unitrends on a larger scale then we use it, however, we found they were easy to work with and even adjusted a few items after we deployed in order to show that Unitrends is a business partner for us and that we are not just another customer that has to keep adding money to the solution to make it a perfect fit.

We use Unitrends as a Disaster Recovery tool in addition to offsite backup. It has satisfied our backup needs for on premise servers and data along with Cloud solutions like Microsoft One Drive and Exchange. It has also contributed to making annual disaster testing simpler, safer and much quicker than before.
  • Provides an onsite recovery tool for files lost overnight or in the current past.
  • Backups are monitored for us in case something goes wrong Unitrends is probably already working on it.
  • Saves time and resources by running efficiently with very little effort from my team.
  • Unitrends team members are always professional and have always come through with the help needed.
  • It would be nice if the data transfer to the cloud was faster so we could do more frequent updates.
  • Upgrades need to be suggested more often to help keep the software current. This would include what improvements or new features exist.
  • Not quite easy enough to use to allow our user base to restore their own files when lost.
Unitrends is fantastic when it comes to restoring servers in the cloud after a disaster. We had a disaster within a month of implementing Unitrends. We were saved because Unitrends unlike other solutions is not Windows based so it was not affected by the malware. When we declared an emergency the team at Unitrends jumped to action and started helping us get restored and working in the cloud. We were able to bring our entire company back on line with-in 2 days without any major outage. Once we formatted all of our servers we were able to restore from Unitrends over a weekend and by Monday morning the entire data center was back to normal. We only lost 1 folder of data. Fantastic continual 24 hour service by Unitrends consultants kept things moving and helped keep our down time short.

Unitrends has been implemented and managed by the IT Department. This system does benefit all users, computers and systems for our company. If there a lost file from a user it can be recovered swiftly. It has helped recover crucial servers during disaster recovery time.
  • Easy and reliable backups.
  • Amazing technical support - fast, knowledgeable, very professional.
  • Great user interface, easy to manage.
  • Limited troubleshooting configurations on GUI.
  • Online support forums have been moved over to new Kaseya support pages breaking legacy support links.
We renewed for our backup solution this year, because of the support and overall performance of our backup appliance, we've been loyal to Unitrends.

We use Unitrends DCB on appliance model 928S, for multi-site centralized backup and recovery. We have been quite pleased with the versatility and reliability of the Unitrends hardware and software, and especially with their technical support solution and staff. We are on our second generation of their solution, and vetted them against several competitors each time we have purchased. We are a heavy VMWare environment, and enjoy the benefits and inclusion of file and system level recovery of our entire hosting infrastructure base. We have had the need to recover individual files and entire systems for a variety of reasons, and have been successful every time.
  • Emulate VMs for file recovery.
  • High backup/recovery success rate.
  • Excellent technical support ecosystem.
  • Good network and IO performance.
  • Need to support larger drive sizes on our offline archive (DR) tier.
  • Improve scalability.
  • Better competitive pricing.
Our Unitrends environment has helped us through some sticky situations, to include: ransomware recovery, technician error/oops, system corruption, user erroneous file deletions. Entire system recoveries can run a very long time, resulting in a longer outage than preferred. But the fact that recovery is possible lessens the sting of efficiency.

We are using it through our whole organization. We have utilized it for backing up our servers and other information since well before I have been here. I have worked here at BRV for 5 years in March.
  • Set it and forget it.
  • Reliable.
  • Easy to use.
  • In the background. (People don't know what it is or what it does.)
  • Uses a lot of energy.
  • I don't have as much experience with it to fully utilize it.
It is best suited in a setting where you are wanting to have someone set it up for you, and you don't have to keep tabs on it except every once in a while. It is definitely a "set it and forget it" type set up.

It is being used as our primary and only backup system.
  • When properly "tweaked" it is set it and forget it.
  • Automatically "sees" all possible assets to backup on your network.
  • Seamless backup from the local appliance to the cloud.
  • Support is very responsive but not very informative.
  • EXTREMELY difficult product to learn and administer.
  • Software is very touchy and it will cease backing up assets for reasons unknown and it doesn't notify you that it did so.
  • IMO, the product requires dedicated personnel to set up, administer and monitor.
  • I've never found a solution in the Knowledge Base or Community - I always have to resort to logging a support call.
IMO, it would be a great product for an organization larger than we are with a dedicated IT staff. The product is not user friendly and for those of us who have other responsibilities within the organization, you will not have the time required to learn the ins and outs of the product and to make sure it is actually backing up everything you need it to. I also do not like how it handles SQL databases separately - very quirky and touchy. I've never felt comfortable that the product is truly backing up everything I need it to and doing it correctly. It also is very buggy with VSS.

Unitrends is being used as the sole backup solution for our servers supporting all departments. It integrates with our virtual environment nicely for both backup and recovery processes. The ability to create image backups of physical machines that can be redeployed in a virtual environment for a recovery situation is very helpful and reassuring.
  • Image backups of physical servers are great. This allows a server to be quickly spun up in a virtual environment is the physical server has an issue.
  • Unitrends allows copy jobs to be sent to a physical NAS or their cloud environment.
  • The daily report is easy to read. It is nice to see a combined report of what jobs were successful and which ones failed over night.
  • The file-level recovery process is quick and easy.
  • The error codes are very generic. It can be frustrating trying to figure out exactly why something failed.
  • It seems like jobs get stuck or deleted in the queue too often. This presents a challenge when we have limited bandwidth and need to rerun backups during business hours.
  • The auto-cleanup feature for old copy jobs does not work when you are copying to a local repository, even though I have been told it should. You have to manually remove each copy job individually with three clicks each to delete old copies from the backup catalog.
  • Trying to tweak the journal size and get backups working on big Linux servers is a challenge, particularly for small organizations without a Linux command line expert.
  • The interface of the Unitrends agent feels very outdated and seems to "break" often. It is also difficult to find settings you want.
  • There were some ports in use that were not on the ports list provided by Unitrends support. I had to wait for support to contact the right group internally to tell me what some were used for.
As a backup solution in general, Unitrends just seems to miss the mark. Coming from using another backup solution, Unitrends seemed like a step backwards and more cheap in my mind. If a college asked me for advice on a backup solution, I would recommend evaluating other products. I myself will be making the switch to another solution soon.

We used Unitrends to backup all of our VMWare servers. It served as a one-stop shop to do all of our server backups in 1 device.
  • Ease of use.
  • Intuitive User Interface.
  • Set it and forget it.
  • We didn't really have any cons. We left Unitrends because we migrated to the cloud and had to use the backup solution that was provided to us.
We are a small company so we didn't need any of the more robust features Unitrends offers. For simply plugging in a device and backing up all my servers, it worked flawlessly. The device we had didn't work for cloud servers so unfortunately we had to switch to something else, but it wasn't due to Unitrends. It was just what we had to do when we migrated and no longer had an onsite data center.

It is not being used. Their "support team" was unable to get their device up and running in a very vanilla environment. They continually sent the wrong hardware and modules for the appliance that we bought. We spent 4 months working on this integration before finally asking for our money back. They offered to RMA the device and refund us, but when we got to management they said they do not do RMA's but they would love to give me 3 years extra support on a device they cannot implement.
  • Sales - They can sell you on a nice white glove DRaaS system.
  • Schedule - We had our calendars full of watching them try to enter the same command over and over again.
  • Alienation - It's like they don't actually want customers.
  • They need technicians trained on their own equipment.
  • Their sales team needs to be given a bullet point sheet on what modules are compatible with what appliance.
  • They need training on integrating with... PureStorage and VMWare because my assigned implementation tech had never used either.
They don't have a 0. I will tell anyone that will listen how horrible this system and company is. Just buy a Rubrik, it will be running seamlessly in your environment in a matter of hours. Rubrik's support is top notch. Rubrik's backups are incredibly fast. Rubrik's recoveries are incredibly easy. Unitrends is the worst vendor I have encountered in my 15 years in IT.

We use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery on our campus, and we are extremely satisfied. The UI is simple and intuitive, and managing or creating backups is a breeze. We were recently victims of a security breach, and having good and readily available backups were critical to getting back on our feet. Unitrends provides a great product with equally helpful and competent support.
  • Ease of use.
  • Simple UI.
  • Fast recovery.
  • Faster backup copy speed.
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery works great for our large environment. When we initially purchased this package/appliance is was used for backing up all of our user profiles, shared folders and offsite server volumes for recovery. About 2 years ago we transitioned from roaming profiles to OneDrive for Business, so currently we are only backing up server volumes and the shared folders that still have to reside locally. We had purchased this solution to move away from tape backups as we were running out of space holding onto all of the tapes for 90-120 back ups. Also the tape method took a long time if we had to attempt to recover a single file for one person whereas now within a matter of minutes I am able to pull down a copy of the missing/corrupt file for the end user.
  • User interface is nice and simple and their dashboard shows everything at a glance from protected assets, issues, and space left on the appliance.
  • The time it takes to recover a file is able to be done in a few minutes as compared to having to mount a tape and have it index to try to locate the file needed.
  • Their tech support is amazing and quick to respond to work with you on getting any back up errors or installation issues resolved.
  • Recently have had an [issue] since changing over from a MESH topology to SD-WAN where all of the servers outside our main office were no longer able to be backed up "file level" style, we had to switch them to "Image level".
  • The error reports for failed back ups can tend to be long and not always an easy read to determine what the issue is. Would be nice if the logs could link to a knowledge based article that could explain it better as well as offer possible solutions without having to contact support to get it resolved.
  • Since we are using an appliance to hold the back ups it would be nice to have some method of seeing all the data stored in order to determine if some old jobs could be deleted. I know they have an aging policy but there has been a time when we were running low on space and I probably could have gone in to delete some back ups for servers that are not vital to recover.
  • The availability to save/archive back ups from assets that are being removed from protection would be a nice option. I don't know if I am just missing it but when I remove an asset it always tells me that doing that will delete all back up jobs. This is something that I will have to ask next time I put in a support ticket or see if Unitrends has a place to ask for features to be added.
It has been perfect for backing up local servers and VMs. This is a scalable product where it can be cloud based or appliance based. There are several different size appliances available to suit most companies needs, from 2TB up to 120TB. If you need more storage space than 120TB then this option may not be for you unless you are willing to purchase multiple appliances to meet your need.

[It's being used as a] complete backup for our clients either as an on-premise solution, managed solution or remote backup solution. We are using it for both virtual and physical backups as well as application and file backups. We are also utilizing the replication and cloud features. This ensures local and off-site backups and provides fast restores and application consistent data.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • Full virtualization support.
  • Physical server support.
  • Full application support.
  • Scriptable via powershell.
  • Improved KVM support.
  • Improved XEN Server support.
For almost all scenarios Unitrends is an ideal solution. However, sometimes you will want to use the UEB software rather than the appliance. Workstation backup is not its strongest strength, though. If you can get the data to a server you are, however, well off when using either the appliance or the software solutions.

We use Unitrends to backup our virtual servers as well as our physical servers. It is being used by primarily the IT department. We are also doing a little bit of DR for a couple of our critical servers. The backups are more reliable than our old backup system which was tape leveraging Symantec BackupExec.
  • Unitrends product is very reliable.
  • Unitrends does a good job of communicating backup success or failures.
  • It allows me to have one solution for backing up both physical and virtual machines.
  • The newer Unitrends GUI interface is not as good as the old.
  • Cloud replication is not good unless you have a very fast internet connection
  • AS400 backups are not all that great.
It is well suited for virtual and physical machines, it is very reliable and file level recovery is pretty quick and easy. The Unitrends support team is pretty good although sometimes you can't get them right away. It does not allow message level recovery for Exchange and it does not handle AS400 backups well.

Unitrends was chosen for our North American datacenters for its appliance based backup. We needed both storage and a backup solution and wanted to ensure it was simple, single pane of glass management and supported archiving. The Recovery appliance filled all of our needs. We currently backup 20-30TB of data in each of our two datacenters.
  • Simple configuration - from the box to backup in under one hour.
  • Scheduled archives, encryption in transit and at rest, simple managment
  • The New UI is much nicer but both are capable and are still being used.
  • The one major complaint I have is that the storage is not scaleable. With the innovations out there like hyperconverged solutions and software defined datacenters, you would think that adding an additional NAS / Appliance would be all that was needed to scale to a larger data target
  • Failure of a vcenter, even though it is backed up, is a catastrophic failure. Removing the identity of the device and recreation of the backup jobs makes this a very problematic restore.
  • Major upgrades are done only by request. When they release new product versions you have to call them and ask for it to be available for you. No other company does this. Very poor service.
Smaller environments that are a mix of virtual and physical and areas where tape output is still needed are well suited for the Unitrends Recovery Appliances. I think a fully virtualized data center would find other solutions that fit better. If you don't need tape out, this is even more obvious.

We use Unitrends to complete our daily backup of everything from file servers to our main SQL databases. Reliable backups, fast recovery, and set and forget management makes this system a must have. All software agents and tools are included in the price, with dedicated software clients for SQL, SharePoint, and Exchange. It is no longer is it necessary to purchase an add on for every client you would like to backup. It has reduced my time required daily for backup management to checking a couple of emails to ensure that everything has completed successfully.
  • Fast backups, easy recovery, and daily updates.
  • All software agents and tools are included in the price, with dedicated software clients for SQL, SharePoint, and Exchange. It is no longer is it necessary to purchase an add on for every client you would like to backup.
  • Set and forget management. It is not required to touch the system daily to ensure that your systems are getting backup.
  • Cost is a little on the expensive side. But the reliability of the system makes up.
  • System support is good but not a great as it once was.
  • System scheduling can be a little confusing until you get experienced.
Works great in small to medium sized environments. Manages backups of Virtual systems amazingly well, but has been known to cause small problems with stranded snapshots in our VM systems. Each system is backup quickly and easily, but finding the correct balance between retention and expense can be difficult. Overall a great system but plan and purchasing extra storage because backups grow quickly.

We use the UniTrends UEB vAppliances to backup and replicate all of our servers. It is used across the entire organization. It has allowed the city to reduce its spend by consolidating three backup platforms down to one and restores are quick and easy. So far, if the restore request was within our SLA, we have a 100% recovery record.
  • UniTrends instant recovery feature is just that, instant recovery. As long as your backup storage resides on fast storage, once you click the 'Instant recovery' button, the server is accessible within a few seconds.
  • Support is tremendous. Like most backup solutions, UniTrends has not been without issues. Every time I have engaged support, I have been incredibly impressed with their willingness to assist and their ability to resolve our issues.
  • The new interface is intuitive and easy to use.
  • Detailed activity monitoring is a little lacking. For example. I'd like to know the speed of replication but, instead of Gbps numbers, I only see 1/4, 2/4... etc.
  • Clarification of the 'Tear Down' feature used for getting rid of recent restores is slightly counter-intuitive. I expect this to give me the option of just releasing the management of the restore from the Unitrends appliance. However, I have deleted the live machine out of my VMware environment and had to restore again once - now I'm a little hesitant to do the tear downs. A warning 'You are about to delete the active recovered machine' or a 'click here to remove the Tear Down prompt from the Unitrends interface or click HERE to delete the recovered machine' would be helpful.
  • Agent installations are not as intuitive as I think they could be. If you are only backing up VMs with no application awareness, it's great. If you need SQL-aware or Cisco UC-aware backups, it's more difficult.
For a purely virtualized environment, I love it. I recommend using it with fast storage if you want to benefit from the Instant Recovery feature. If you have slow storage like a USB disk drive - Instant Recovery may not be fun for you.

We use Unitrends across our whole organization. The biggest thing that is addressed is reliability and simplicity. The disk to disk backups and archive, is so much better than tape backups. Speed and accuracy are key, and because it is disk and not tape, swapping out disks is a very fast and simple process.
  • We like the way the backups run and the way the schedule can be staggered.
  • Our Unitrends appliance does a great job of de-duplication. It all happens behind the scenes without any intervention for us.
  • Notifications are a big thing with Unitrends. There really is not an issue of something slipping by or being missed. You really know what is going on at all times.
  • Recovering files for users couldn't be easier. The easy to understand GUI gives you a lot of information through a single pane of glass.
  • One thing that comes to mind is that when there is an update to the GUI, it seems that the placement of information is changed a lot, or that a feature has been removed.
  • There used to be notifications that would come up before I ever knew there was an issue. That was a great feature to have. I made us feel that Unitrends was really on top of things.
  • We liked going directly through Unitrends to make purchases or upgrades instead of now going through a third party. There seems to be so much disconnect going through a third party.
Setup is simplistic and management of the backups and the appliance is very easy to understand. If you are looking to save time and get a good ROI, then Unitrends is a good choice. All disk backup is the way of the future and Unitrends have been doing things this way all along.

We are using Unitrends for backing up all of our servers (Linux, OES, Windows, and SQL). We have been using Unitrends for about 4 years now and are very happy with this service. We have upgraded to a newer server and had limited issues and phone support was quick and very helpful.
  • Supports Novell Clients
  • Quick communication
  • Data analysis
  • Add support for Google
It has served well for what we have. We are starting to bridge into VM support and will continue to see how that grows into the use for Unitrends.

Unitrends is used by a number of our customers. It is an easy to use end user product that allows for safe storage, backup, and recovery of their data. Customer service is always a plus with Unitrends and our customers have an incredible experience with their US-based customer service.
  • Customer Service response and support
  • Reliable Backup
  • Cloud Storage
  • Relaible DR
  • Unitrends renewals can be somewhat costly compared to other vendors
Unitrends actually is a great solution across mid-size to enterprise customers. It may be cost-prohibitive to a very small organization.
