Unitrends is used for backing up our on premise data across the organization. The primary function is recovery of lost or accidentally deleted files from our file server. In the event of an environmental disaster it creates offsite and cold copies of critical data and infrastructure. If a server were to become corrupt we could rebuild it from a backup vs having to start from scratch.
  • Centralized backup management
  • Easy cloud integration
  • The new interface is very user friendly
  • Better Active Directory integration
  • More storage options
  • Faster customer support
For keeping VM backups in three different locations it is great. If you want better Active Directory integration there are better options available. However the Unitrends pricing cannot be beat by other solutions we have looked into. After the new user interface it has been easy for me and my colleagues to run jobs and make changes to jobs. It is much more intuitive than it use to be. Before the GUI was changed we were seriously considering switching to a different solution.

We use our Unitrends Backup appliance as our primary backup tool for the entire school/business.<br>We do nightly backups of critical data as well as daily backups to external media that is shipped off-site weekly (on a 4-week rotation).<br>It's used for DR and for individual file recovery as needed.
  • Reports are helpful for general monitoring.
  • Adding new assets is simple.
  • Interface is fairly intuitive.
  • Mostly "set it and forget it".
  • Error detail reports are still fairly cryptic.
  • More options for reporting format would be nice (graphs, charts, etc).
  • 3rd party cloud storage options would be welcome.
The appliance is well suited for simple and reliable on-premise back-up. The addition of an external dock or Cloud backup allows for off-site options. A nice, low-maintenance solution for small/mid-sized environments. We don't use the larger appliances or Unitrends's cloud solution so I can't speak to the quality of those.

I use Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] for all my servers and one desktop. It alleviates the burden of me constantly checking backups because I know they're done right. I recently had to restore from a backup, and it was a fairly simple process. I appreciated all the help from the support team. They are very knowledgeable.
  • Customer Service
  • SLA
  • Easy-to-use UI
  • Faster initial response time from an engineer with a priority 1 support ticket.
Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] has simplified my backup process. After the initial set up, I knew things were backing up properly. The customer support when I have questions is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They are efficient, and very good at following up when necessary. The recent bare metal restore I completed did take quite a bit of time, but with the size of my server, that was to be expected. Since I couldn't be on the phone with support the entire time, she made sure to send me emails periodically as she was also checking the status of my restore process.

BNMC is a Managed Services Provider (MSP) and we supply and manage Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery for our customers. Most of our customers that use Unitrends have a server infrastructure in house, either at a co-location data center or in their office. The Unitrends solution protects their entire infrastructure across the whole organization. We also supply Unitrends Spanning for Office 365 SaaS backup and recovery.
  • Unitrends has successfully recovered data during disasters we had with customers, including Ransomware attacks and SAN hardware failure. The technology really worked well to get customers back up and running after these disasters.
  • Unitrends is easy to manage and the UniView consolidated portal allows our engineering team to manage multiple customers and multiple devices across different networks with ease and a single pane of glass.
  • The Unitrends support team and partner team are very easy to work with, making Unitrends a good partner over the years.
  • Prior to UniView, each Unitrends appliance had to be individually managed. This was a difficult process from the MSP point of view as we have multiple customers to manage their backup.
  • Unitrends is still fine tuning their Cloud Technology solutions for protecting Azure and AWS.
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is well suited to customers that have servers or storage in house or at a data center and it works well across different technologies and platforms such as Windows, Linux, NAS, SMB Shares, etc. If customers have all their data in a cloud solution like Azure or AWS, then Unitrends physical appliance is not necessarily going to work the best.

Whole organization.
4 business units in 4 different Midwest states.
It is our backup & recovery tool set.
  • Easy to install and set up.
  • Easy to implement AD security.
  • Handles basic functions...easily.
  • GUI interface is very slow (for many features). GUI interface is incomplete; pieces of information that are desired are sometimes not available.
  • Buggy code. We have become something of a testing ground for them. We have discovered bugs and they have tested out new features and fixes in our environment.
  • Poor notification on failures and problems with the product.
Smaller organization that does not have a wide variety of platforms to backup.
I believe their target is the small market.

Unitrends Cloud Backup is reliable and automatic. Daily reports detail local and cloud backup jobs, and alerts of potential problems. Their recent addition of threat analysis of file changes between backups makes it even better.
  • Broad support of Operating Systems.
  • Native support of Hyper Visors.
  • Some important functions are difficult to find or nonintuitively placed.
We utilize the snapshot feature to continuously backup our accounting team data. this has saved us so much headache when they have a system crash. They can get back to where they were with minimal loss of time.

We currently use Unitrends as our main backup appliance/system both at our main office and as replication target at a branch office. We use it across the entire organization and have had no issues besides minor instances, of which their support staff quickly resolve for us. It allows us to back up our entire file server, various servers, exchange database, and everything else in our environment that's needed.
  • Very intuitive interface and admin console.
  • Quickly restores backups to intended targets.
  • Compression is great which allows for more space to be utilized.
  • Instant recover quickly gets a server back up for temp purposes.
  • Frequency of updates.
  • Sorting of some columns/sections could be better.
  • Helping admins better understand differences in back up schema.
Unitrends seems to shine in medium to larger environments and has the resources and space to allow for massive amounts of data. It allows for quick backing up of data and quick restores. The replication is smooth as well. I'm not entirely sure how well this system would integrate into a small business setting due to size/costs.

We use it as a backup and disaster recover unit. We have a large variation of once a month to 2hr increments of backing up different servers. The speed in which it backups is incredibly fast. No messing around with storage tapes or rotation. We have hot backups on the appliance, we store cold backups on a spare NAS just because, and we also have storage on the forever cloud with the ability to stand up servers in the cloud. We sit next to a nuclear power plant. If something happens with that place, assuming the surrounding community survives, we'll have our data and can start up where we left off once a new location is found and hardware is put into place. It's not a variable everyone needs to contend with, but I have it in the back of my mind.
  • We run VMware and it is almost a set it and forget it process. Ease of management is A+++.
  • Time in which to restore a server from start to finish is less than 3 mins. And I mean it's up, running, and functional.
  • The reporting is very nice as well. No need to login to see results. A nice report is sent each day.
  • If a failure happens (rare), it's not always easy to determine the problem of why, even with the failure logs. Eventually you learn what they mean.
VMware environment this is priceless. I think even for a small business this could work if the price was right, but could be overkill in that situation. If you are in a high risk area or data is critical, this would be a got to as well.

We use Unitrends appliance at our main campus and remote campus about 200 miles from he main. we backup all the University's servers and data. Keep at least a month of backup on the appliance, with weekly archives to tape for required 24 month storage off-site. We seldom have problems and if we do it usually resolved quickly by Unitrends support. I think we only had 2-3 problems that didn't take a few minutes to resolved by initial tech.

Prior to Unitrends we had two different solutions, one for physical hardware and other for virtual servers. Unitrends allowed us to consolidate and simplify backups.
  • Rather simple to use and manage.
  • Great tech support.
  • Reliable hardware.
  • We had initial sizing problem with one appliance, once corrected had no problems.
  • Tape archiving a bit touchy, coders keep forgetting once all retention expired on tape it can be used again- so have to get hot fixes after major updates.
  • The push update to agents seems to fail more than works, simple to just go to server an install client updates though.
I hardly ever give 10's as nothing is that good. But Unitrends pretty close. Great hardware, great support, very few problems. and for the most part just works. If I skip a day monitoring I seldom regret that as Unitrends just works. And we like it can connect to tape library to meet our 24 month of monthly archives.

We use Unitrends to backup 3 of our servers. Since using Unitrends it has centralized our server backups and given us the ability to have onsite and cloud based backups. I am able to manage these backups in a central setting and I now have full confidence that my data is safe.
  • Cloud backup.
  • Quick data recovery.
  • Simplified management.
  • Can not boot a server from the appliance if the disk are configured as dynamic disk.
  • Can be cumbersome to add additional media for backup.
Unitrends has not failed me when I have needed to retrieve lost data. I can fully trust that when I need them the data is there and then if I have issues their tech support team is knowledgeable and willing to help me. With the cloud backup I can rest easy knowing that if my appliance is damaged or lost that they can send me a new appliance and my data is still in tact.

Unitrends is one of two backup softwares we use. Unitrends DRaaS is primary for DR if our physical site is unavailable or damaged. It is used by the IT department only. Unitrends fills the gap of nonlocal (city) backup and recovery options. We wanted to make sure we had an easy-to-use DRaaS that was not hosted in our state.
  • Not nickel and diming for cloud storage.
  • Easy to setup and let run.
  • Easy to see what is backed up.
  • Easy to delete individual servers from cloud and local backup.
  • Appliance network configuration is clunky and can't easily change several alert settings like SMTP sender settings.
  • mware dynamic Sbackups is limited and easiest to be done by folders in the vcent.
I know that there are lots of different configuration possibilities. I can't say where it would and would not be appropriate at the moment.

We use Unitrends in order to meet all of our business continuity and disaster recovery needs. We back up all of our virtual servers and network storage using the Unitrends Backup Appliance and we replicate our critical servers to the cloud. We haven't had a disaster but in DR testing we have been able to easily bring up our critical servers. We also periodically test restoring servers and can restore a server in less than 15 minutes using Unitrends. It has also saved our users a few times in that we have been able to recover deleted files quickly and easily as long as they were backed up.
  • Quickly restores servers and recovers files.
  • Easy to use and excellent customer service.
  • Having the piece of mind that we have off site DR is wonderful.
  • We receive daily reports of the status of all of our backups.
  • As a long time customer, the product has only gotten better and easier to use.
It is well suited for backup virtual servers since it easily integrates with VCenter and physical servers. NAS is also very easy to backup and you can restore the entire device or individual files and folders.

We use Unitrends for our enterprise backup solution. It is used to backup servers at our primary data center as well as a few servers located in other places. This allows us to perform server backups and replicate them to a secondary data center.
  • Allows for backup of physical and virtual servers.
  • Performs database backups where SQL server is involved.
  • Allows recovery of an entire server or individual files as requested from users.
  • After recovering files to a CIFS share it is not easy to delete the files after you are finished with them.
  • Inside the backup and restore dashboard some of the options are named similarly and it can be easy to confuse them sometimes (Recover files vs. File Level Recovery vs Instant Recovery).
  • It can sometimes take a while for replication to complete but that is influenced by the connection speed.
We have been able to use Unitrends to restore an entire server after Windows updates failed to install correctly. We were able to take the backup from a physical server then create a virtual server and restore from the backup then use the virtual server going forward. We have also been able to use the bare-metal recovery when a server died about a month after implementing Unitrends.

Unitrends MSP is used across our entire client base. We manage multiple Unitrends appliances with local and both private and public cloud-based backups. The application provides management and reporting across our entire client base and saves considerable time over accessing each client's appliance individually. That lets us provide better service to our clients and saves us time and money.
  • Integration with Kaseya VSA
  • Single "pane of glass" management across [the] entire client base
  • Outstanding customer support, very responsive
  • Good value for features
  • Intuitive interface, easy to use and manage
  • More details and options on alerts
  • Better reporting. more logging information
  • More control over restore options
This is a solid product and particularly well suited for smaller managed service providers without a large support staff. We have several co-managed IT clients and we can share control with the client's internal IT staff without exposing them to any of our other [client's] systems. It works really well in a VMware environment for both backups and restoration. This may not be a suitable solution for environments with large backup requirements with time constraints. The cloud backup feature works well but requires a suitable amount of bandwidth to operate effectively. We had to increase the speed, and cost, of our Internet connection to allow efficient cloud backup performance.

Our organization uses Unitrends for our on-premises disaster recovery solution. While we have some services that are cloud-based, those have their own disaster recovery mechanisms. Unitrends provides a very good 1-2-3 solution for our aging on-premises servers and has been invaluable as a peace of mind solution allowing for simple roll-back capabilities during upgrades as well as secure knowledge that all core systems are safe if disaster should strike.
  • Integration with SQL Server databases for full and incremental backups
  • Agents are easily deployed and upgraded for VM hosts
  • Pulling backups and either deploying or performing in-place restore jobs is straight-forward and intuitive
  • Regular reports of success/failed backup jobs makes managing any issues easy to diagnose
  • Like other solutions, Unitrends does require [the] use of agents for hypervisor hosts and database servers
  • There is an upfront cost for the on-premises hardware (though they do allow you to roll your own)
  • Some on-premises configurations need to be done via console/SSH rather than through the web interface (such as setting up TLS)
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery has been very well-suited to ensuring secure backups of all of our on-premises servers. Using its agents, it is able to seamlessly backup our SQL Server databases, virtual machines, and their hosts (both Windows and Linux) and has proven to be capable [of] quickly restoring existing backups. Once the initial configuration is completed and the backup schedules are optimized, it runs in the background with virtually no attention required.

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery] was used across most of our IT infrastructure as basic Backup and Recovery.
  • Not a huge learning curve
  • Fairly good UI
  • Client agent was not resource-intensive
  • Sadly, [we] had a HUGE need for [the] daily administration.
  • Our appliance was not super-stable and would hang and crash often requiring a restart.
  • Reporting could be better, there were some more useful things in the old UI that were not apparent in the new one.
The regular backups did work ok and they were not too difficult to set up and manage. But the appliance itself seemed to have all kinds of issues from drive failures to Database corruption to a variety of other errors we'd see. We felt it required way way way too much daily administration.

  • Decent user interface
  • The add-on appliance that we use for backup copies has a single fan speed that can be VERY loud. Variable fan speeds would be a big plus.
