Unitrends is our primary backup and recovery system organization wide. It solved our problem of having a Virtual Machine focused backup solution to allow for rapid backups and long retention cycle. Ability to replicate to a 2nd offsite appliance as well as cold external based backups gave us the protection we needed. Quick restores were also highly desirable.
  • Good deduplication across backups to allow for longer retention cycles needed for organization needs created by having lots of annual tasks.
  • Cost effective Virtual Appliance option that included a license for a secondary target for replicating backups offsite.
  • Rapid recovery of VMs is very simple and easy to accomplish.
  • Initial installation support and ongoing technical support has been very effective.
  • Had thought the version I purchased included the automated restore and service test functionality but it did not. Ensure you're getting the right version. This was not a deal breaker for me.
  • Predictive Analysis for potential mass file modification could be improved to give better information on why it triggers. By itself the alert isn't very useful without a better way to analyze what triggered the alert.
  • Emailed reports are a bit clunky to look at though they contain good information.
  • Lack of Active Directory backup is disappointing and a feature that is a part of many competitors products.
Highly virtualized environments with lots of VMs on a few servers. Socket based licensing makes it very easy to backup a lot of VMs at a good cost. The built in hot replication to another appliance can make it very easy to get backups to a secondary site while still taking periodic cold external backups for catastrophic (Ransomware) events that might get the on network backups.

We resell managed backup services to customers and I use the free version at home with my home family servers.
  • Compression and deduplication.
  • Retention policies.
  • Command line access.
  • License fee is ridiculous now.
  • More frequent backups over taxes the system.
  • Restore interface could be easier to understand.
It works well if you have a lot of money to spend on licenses and only need to back up once or twice a day. You really need to bulk up memory and processor count if backing up a lot of data, but the system doesn't tell you that... the storage just fills up for no apparent reason.

Nightly, cross-replicated backups. The UI is simple and easy to use and the product performs as expected. When support is needed, Unitrends is there 24/7 and very responsive with following up. It is a good product and I feel confident in its ability to keep our business running in the case of an unforeseen incident.
  • Good UI.
  • Based on Linux, flexible.
  • Support & service.
  • UI is good, but a little more responsive/snappy would be nice.
Set it and forget it backup, which is what you need for an Enterprise solution. It is not appropriate for consumer backup.

At the time we were using EMC Networker 7.6 and 8.x, [and] doing backup to tape. Even with two drives, it can be time consuming. With the Dell/EMC Merger, the renewal skyrocketed. Thus, [I] looked at other replacements that would meet additional [needs]; Unitrends [Data Center Backup & Recovery] was one of the few that filled all the needs. [For example:] B2D External Backup for off Site (B2D RXDA removable HDD), Backup to Tape, and Backup to remote Appliance [fulfilled our needs]. [The] [backup was] not only [a] physical Host and Netapp, but also VM's & Databases.
  • Backup to Disk, DLT Tapes are time consuming.
  • Offered as an appliance (unlimited) or Virtual Appliance (Lic is per CPU).
  • Very Versatile, has a wide scope of client support.
  • [Can] restore physical host back to bare metal and some to VM.
  • [We] have the virtual appliance with plenty of CPU/RAM/HDD [space], but the web interface can [create] slow reports; [the] recovery take time to process [takes] minutes.
  • [I would] like an "ignore option" for VM's. [ The work] around is [to] have [the] DR server outside [the] Unitrends scope aka separate vcenter Datacenter, put colones and test VM's, [so] they don't show on the backup report. Unitrends [Data Center Backup and Recovery] does a scan if any VM's [are] not in a recent job; [the VM's] shows up in the report as Failed backup.
  • [I would] like an ignore option for NDMP volumes, once again it does scan for new volumes. [It] should ignore NetApp root volume since this a volume that can't be restored. Volumes that don't need to be backed up because they scratch data or mirror of another storage device.
  • [Currently,] only [one] supports [out of the] two NDMP backup modes; [I] would like it to support both modes fully.
It's very appropriate in a mixed environment were you have multiple client types. [Whereas] other backup software [are] more focused on [mostly] Virtual Machines.

[Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is] inappropriate, if you have most of [your] VM's on [a] high core count and few CPU's Virtual [Appliance's] can be cheaper and can be [upgraded], since you can add storage shelves. [The] VS [option] [of] the Appliance, [is] you have an unlimited lic, but [the] limited disk capacity [depends] on the size of [the appliance [that] you get.

We back up all servers in one location and replicate it to another unit at a different location. We do this at 4 locations. We are using 9120's and 8080's in our 2 larger locations and 928's in the smaller one.
This is used for the whole organization and ensures we not only have backups locally but also offsite.
  • Restores are very quick.
  • Replication to offsite ensures DR.
  • Can bring a server up offsite and still run it in our environment.
  • NAS Incremental Forever has not working in 4 separate versions.
  • No report on replicas working or not.
  • updating the agent does not work well from the GUI.
Great alternative to tapes. Replication offsite enures DR. Great agent for VM, Exchange, SQL and Windows servers.

Not very good on NAS devices as it has to do each file.

We currently employ two Unitrends 8040s backup appliances in our data facility. We use it to back up our VMware and Nutanix virtual environments. They back up our entire infrastructure. We selected Unitrends for its ease of use and throughput of backup speeds. We did compare with other vendors and found this solution combined both ease of use and cost effectiveness.
  • Quick backups for incrementals forever.
  • Ability to restore in audit mode to verify backups.
  • Interface is quite easy to use.
  • RPO/RTO Compliance widget is great.
  • Initial onboarding was a little confusing, however, quickly got up to speed.
  • Wish there was a better system to determine why failures occur(rare).
  • SLA policies could stand some work.
Well suited in any environment. Unitrends has various models designed for various sized environments. Backup speeds are enhanced with incrementals which synthetically form fulls. Neat feature.

We currently use Unitrends to back up VMware in our vertex appliance as well as her physical servers. We have had to use it to recover from some attacks to our servers in the last two years and have successfully recovered are data. So far only limitations has been storage due to the large database that we have with mfiles. Nevertheless we are satisfied with our Unitrends appliance.
  • Easy.
  • Fast.
  • A must-have.
  • Faster support.
It definitely has its benefits when using it for local recovery as opposed to cloud recovery which is limited by your bandwidth.

We are using Unitrends as our backup, to both their appliance and cloud, of our on premise and MS Azure based resources. It is being utilized across the entire organization.
  • Excellent US based support.
  • Backup, restore, and reporting tools meet or exceed our needs.
  • Extremely flexible abilities to backup on premise, cloud, SQL databases, and multiple operating systems.
  • I have not found any deficiencies with Unitrends.
It serves all of our on premise and cloud backup needs. Their parent company, Kaseya, provides us with an all encompassing backup solution for our server needs, along with cloud resources in Office 365 and Salesforce. I am most impressed by their US based support for hardware, software, and cloud.

We are using it across the whole organization. This addresses disaster recovery and being able to get back up and running rather quickly, having full backups of our data, as well as differentials in between. I've used other backup at previous jobs, Unitrends is easier to understand than the previous software that I used!
  • Backups.
  • Reports.
  • Logs.
  • Ability to schedule fulls and incrementals/differentials at the same time.
  • Improve job calendar to be accurate.
  • Exchange Backups need to be able to backup / restore individual mailboxes rather than entire database.
  • Not much else.
I haven't come across a scenario where this is less appropriate to be used in my environment. We have a lot of Hyper-V servers and seems to handle it rather well! Even when we had VMware environments it handled it rather well. The only thing that I can think of that would be a great improvement would be for exchange backups being able to backup/restore individual mailboxes rather than the entire database would be a great big benefit, especially if only one box is corrupted.

Backing up critical systems for disaster recovery and in the event files become corrupted. We have used it to do a full migration of servers from one VM to another as well as doing file level recovery for individual users on our data servers as they have accidentally deleted files in the past. Great system, support is top notch.
  • Backing up servers.
  • Archiving backups to media that is transferred and stored off-site.
  • File Level recovery when needed.
  • Difficult to find things in their newer interface.
  • Archive appliance can be a little finicky, but manageable.
  • Reporting.
Enterprise backup it is a great alternative for a business with a great majority of systems moved to the cloud and just backing up the few that are still on premise. Might get pricey if you have all of your systems on prem, just depends on how much data capacity you need.

We are a K12 Educational institution that is extremely limited in our outside bandwidth. We utilize two clusters of VMWare hosts with a wide variety of VM's. We setup Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery to backup our entire VMware infrastructure. On occasion we have for a myriad of reasons had to recover various VM's from backup(s) locally or from the Cold Copy remote site.
  • The CBT(Changed Block Tracking) within VMWare seems to be exceedingly fast.
  • The recovery process whole VM works well.
  • The quick and dirty mount a filesystem from some point in the past is handy to grab a small change.
  • The Cold Copy uses a VPN so that sensitive data is protected in transit.
  • Some of the error messages are too terse or simply say failed. Had they displayed a useful message could of saved me a support call.
  • Updates have been problematic via the GUI, logging in the the console is much faster and give you more details as to where it is in the update process.
  • Managing the retention policy(s) can take some trial and error to get the maximum retention.
I have had good luck with recovering VM's and/or files with our installation. The job(s) I have set up run as expected and as soon as a VM has completed being backed up it is immediately put in the queue to be copied over our private fiber link to a data recovery center offsite.

A large VM with multiple drives and a good deal of daily changes can take some time to recover, as we use the Full Backup, Incremental Forever approach. A recovery has to first recover that last "Full Backup" and/or "Synthetic Full Backup" and then layer over the subsequent changes. Unfortunately, this can take some time to complete. But at the same time, I have had all my restored VMs boot and run as expected.

The appliance is currently being used to back up both physical servers, 2 VMWare hosts along with numerous Vms within the vSphere.
  • Can back up almost any type of machine whether it be physical or the numerous VM options.
  • Always starts on time for our nightly backups and is fairly quick depending on size.
  • Allows for redundancy with the Unitrends Cloud backup which gets replicated from on-prem backups.
  • Although the UI has had improvements a little more refinement would be nice.
  • One or two click full backups would be handy for a quick master of a machine/VM before a nightly incremental.
With varying appliances and options the Unitrends line can easily be utilized for small to large businesses. If the company only has a single server it may be best to use a cloud backup solution with an external drive but with 2 or more servers the Unitrends appliance can be a lifesaver and bring comfort in knowing data is safe.

The product is being used company-wide and protecting various workloads. The primary focus was to create restoration points that accommodated workflow without interrupting it. The ability to roll back unintended modifications to file structure and database logging without impacting users' ability to work was key in getting the solution configured.
  • Cost effective.
  • Provides multiple ways to create a disaster recovery plan.
  • Easy to manage.
  • Support is always willing to assist.
  • Issues with virtualized guests in some legacy environments.
  • Occasional issues with hardware appliance updates.
  • Additional alert conditions depending on needs.
It's a great way for any small to mid-sized business to get a disaster recovery plan in place that doesn't have large data requirements. When a small business has large data needs (10TB+), the cloud protection piece starts to become problematic from our experience. The cost is easier to justify for mid to large businesses when working with larger data sets.

We are a relatively small IT environment, with one central server and user PCs. We use the Unitrends Recovery Series backup appliance to automatically back up both the corporate server and selected user PCs each night. The software actually provides many more features than we need, so getting started was something of an effort. But the hardware and software perform "as advertised".
  • Automatic backups
  • Easy-to-understand recovery procedures
  • Automatic, off-site cloud replication
  • Having to download agent software onto individual AIX servers and Windows PCs is less convenient than being able to push updates to the users.
  • The entire backup mentality seems to be oriented towards the mindset of a data center vs. a user. Application backups, say at month-end, require some ingenuity to work around the normal backup schedules.
  • Retention schedules are set by client. Setting up different retention schedules for separate applications on a single client requires setting up aliases - which feels more like a work-around than an integrated feature.
  • With my current software, there does not appear to be any simple way to set up a backup schedule replicating the often-used "backup each day and keep for a week", "backup each month and keep for a year", "backup each year end and keep forever". Doing this requires some very inventive configuration.
Probably not appropriate for an IT environment that operates without a full-time IT person. Setting up the backup schedules is not simple. Outside of that, the hardware and software perform well. The recovery process is easy to understand and execute. There doesn't seem to be any real concept of "generation backups".

Currently backing up all VMware servers and a few stand alone servers and appliances. Have had to use the recovery twice. Once to retrieve a few files and once to restore a VM that was not starting up.
  • Easy to use interface.
  • Really straightforward.
  • Quick hardware setup.
  • Incredibly knowledgeable and responsive chat team.
  • Learning curve for agent deployment.
  • Manual agent installs for older Windows server versions.
  • Can be tricky for Domain Controller backups.
This can be used in medium to large sized businesses. Small sized businesses with less complexity could use less expensive software and buy nonproprietary hardware. If you are large enough to have an IT staff this will make backing up a breeze and is highly recommended. Easy to use and will let you know of any failures. It works for you!

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is my main production backup system and currently backup all my hypervisor hosts and virtual machines including VMWare and Microsoft systems. This backup system replaced my old SCDPM solution and addressed many issues and problems like long backup time and inconsistent backup and failing recovery that I have with my previous backup system.
  • Customer service and technical support is top notch. You can chat online or email your issues or problems and someone will get back to you instantly. Technical support is knowledgeable and resourceful.
  • Unitrends instant recovery is a live saver. It is a quick and easy way to recovery from any corrupt or failed systems.
  • Unitrends Ransomware detection is a nice feature to have and to be alerted when there are abnormalities.
  • Unitrends hardware notification alerts me if there is any potential issues or problems with any hardware failure.
  • Unitrends backup systems require deployment of agent to hosts and VMs in order for them to communicate. Every time there is an new update, I have to deployed new agent to update every systems which is time consuming and chances it can break and take down production systems.
  • Comparing to other backup systems in the market, it would be nice to see that Unitrends system can be used as a file share system to hold files shares as well.
  • Unitrends search feature needs a little update to be perfect.
For the price and the reliability of the system, I highly recommend this solution to anyone who needs a decent backup system to get started. For the features, there are some that I like and a few that I don’t like. For any company with 200 plus systems to backup, this backup system is ideal.

We needed a local backup solution for the service we support. It was being used just by our group and it addressed solving the problem of having a restore should a restore be needed.

  • Nothing I can think of.
It was a great product and easy to use and set up for our small group of servers. I don't see it being a good suit for backing up user devices.

I have VM servers for all of my server needs and I needed a backup solution that could work with various OSs and without a client on each device or server. Unitrends was the perfect fit. We are a small independent private school in Nashville, TN and it is our only backup solution.
  • Back up jobs just work as scheduled or requested.
  • Restore from appliance or cloud at any time.
  • Restore a full server or a single file all from one backup of server.
  • Cloud solution does its thing without any interaction from end user.

We use Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery across our Organization. It is our primary means for backup of Virtual Machines including both Windows and Linux, physical servers, Windows files, Microsoft SQL Server, Active Directory and some user PCs. Unitrends addresses data loss prevention by backing up files locally in the appliance as well as a disaster recovery by using Unitrends cloud to save offline copy of the data in the cloud separate from our physical location.
  • It has a simple user interface to schedule data backups according to a schedule.
  • Report logs are easy to understand.
  • User and backup administration is easy to manage.
  • Automated restore testing would be nice.
  • Alert for local and cloud storage full instead of logging into the appliance.
  • Cloud backup cost is expensive compared to other vendors.
Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is an all in one backup and disaster recovery solution. It has a local backup and recovery component made of recovery series hardware and software which backs up infrastructure as a service, Network attached storage, hyperconverged, virtual and physical machines locally. The local copy then can be pushed to the cloud with hot or cold target replication to the Unitrends Disaster Recovery as a service. All in 1 pane of glass.

We use it internally and for customers.
  • Great tech support.
  • Cost effective.
  • Would like them to allow you to mount a backup, and browse the backup files to restore, or use a script to selectively restore files.
  • Faster backup and restore times.
  • Allow you to set virtual machine settings when using instant recovery.
  • Provide better progress information when restoring a large job.
Great for smaller amounts of data stored on servers.
Instant recovery doesn't work very well. If you have a volume of 6TB, but 1TB is used, it needs 6TB to restore.
