I think Unitrends leaves a lot to be desired from a user interface. Their GUI is not very intuitive and does not follow Windows File Structure very well. It is hard to Navigate to where you want to go. When I attempt to adjust the Retention or the Backup Schedule I have to Google how to do it or call into support.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication, HYCU Backup & Recovery for Nutanix and Carbonite Server
Unitrends appliance works well it has recovery verification, can be backed up to multiple destinations. Can be differential or always incremental. Can be backed up to the cloud from the same console. Snapshots can be taken of the VM and the backups are compressed using deduplication.

VEEAM is the product that I decided to go to from Unitrends recently, as it is something that I have relied on in past companies. I am happy with the backups, however they do take up a lot more space than what Unitrends has provided. Barracuda does not have the same ROI as Unitrends and Veeam.

Before Unitrends we were paired with a local service that would backup our data off-site in a different physical location, but we have since discontinued that service. With Unitrends I've been able to monitor our daily backups when needed and can rest easy at night knowing that if there is a problem it will email me immediately. So far, my backups have been running smoothly and automated without any issues.

We are moving away from Unitrends to Dell EMC Avamar. It is not perfect by any means, but the concerns around data loss or everyday interaction have been alleviated. I do like the interface better for Unitrends and the daily digests. But with the catastrophic issues we have had, this is not something we could maintain.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication and Clumio
We have evaluated Veeam and Clumio as alternatives to Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery. We choose to stay with Unitrends' solution as their customer support and appliance work very well within our environment for maintaining backups for our physical servers. Unitrend's feature set was much better than Veeam's in our environment and provided us with the capabilities we needed to efficiently manage our backups. Clumio is purely a virtual based backup solution and did not fill the need we had for our physical servers.

I have used tape backups and also cheaper products but Unitrends far exceeds my expectations for an on-prem and off-prem backup appliance. I think the biggest thing in that the onboarding team was amazing and made it super simple to understand how the platform works and the amazing feature sets.

We selected Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery because we were having an issue with our previous solution. In addition, we were impressed by how easily we were able to add additional storage, if needed (allowing room for growth). Also, we were able to procure Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery off of a valid bid for procurement that was honored by my organization's Business Office.

We chose Unitrends because of our lack of experience with Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery. Other products provided only a portion of the total functions required for an end-to-end solution. Unitrends also worked better in a Hyper-V environment than other products.

With feature improvements in recent years, Unitrends has become a great bang for your buck back up solution. Veeam is still a leader in the industry but with its feature set and pricing, Unitrends has been a great purchase for our organization. I feel confident in its ability to protect our in-house digital assets.

Honestly, Synology can't be worse. Also, the previous backup solutions - even freeware ones - at least didn't give us the kinds of headaches that Unitrends is still giving us today.

Looked at products like Rubrik which seemed to do more than we needed and also came at a significant cost. Also looked at more similar alternatives such as Arcserve, but felt that Unitrends solution was better suited to our needs especially with their recovery appliance.

We've used BackupExec before, and it was decently suited, but was not nearly as easy to implement. Switching to a purpose-built appliance has made the process of configuring backups and restoring much easier.

Our Quest license was coming up for renewal when we embarked on this initiative. I inquired about Quest's DR options and was floored by the pricing. Unitrends offered all the features we were looking for at a much better price point.

Sytos - (I haven't seen for years) - Excellent performance, clean UI, did it job.
Retrospect - Handled 'rollup' backups (kind of like incremental forever), excellent job of desktop/laptop user backups. We would be still using this product for DT/LT had it remained under original ownership. Retrospect is not suitable for our enterprise storage needs.
Backup Exec worked well before Norton purchase, I understand they divested if so will look again.
Veeam was first choice for enterprise storage, but VM freeze disqualified them, was told that Unitrends doesn't do that but it does.
I plan on inviting these two contenders to our next technology bake-off, will be looking to add others.
Backup Exec (If no longer a Norton product).

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is simply better than Backup Exec. It is more flexible and provides services that Veritas does not. We replaced a very old implementation of Backup Exec with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery and have not looked back.

We used to run Backup Exec here at the shop. It worked for us for a very long time, but we did have a lot of issues with it during that time. One of the biggest things is just having the raw disk space for the backups (we were running an older version, the dedup might be better on newer versions). When I was looking for a backup solution, it was down to this or Veeam for me and this one edged it out in the end because it was a one stop shop solution; I could get the hardware, the software and the support all in one place.
