We haven't really used other backup solutions in our corporation other than Unitrends. Unitrends has been able to do what we need it to do and we have not needed to search for other solutions. Our VM's [are] backed up using their internal tools, but I do not consider that a comparable product to Unitrends.

We tested Veeam when evaluating new backup solutions but did not find it as easy to use, it was not able to provide an all in one solution, IE we still had to purchase a dedicated server and storage, we also wanted the extra security especially in the case of ransomware that a hardened pre-configured LINUX OS provided over running the backup software on top of Windows

I was not involved with the deployment of Barracuda Backup since I started at my current company after implementation. Back then I used Barracuda for a limited amount of time and it did the job, but the cost was more expensive and that's why we decided to switch to Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
They are both similar in nature. I think Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery may be easier to configure and monitor. Veeam seems to need a bit more product understanding in order to fully implement.Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is more intuitive. Tech support on Veeam may be slightly better.

Unitrends was more involved to install and configure, but I have more confidence in its security with it being a Linux OS as opposed to just running on a Windows box. Acronis seemed to have more frequent failures on backups, even to local storage. It was also less configurable, especially in an environment with a dedicated 10Gbps backup network. Unitrends has no problem with multiple network interfaces. For the cloud, Acronis would have more failures that were very difficult to diagnose and repair. Their support was conscientious and responsive, but there was always a language barrier. Unitrends is not without its share of odd cloud backup snafus, but their support engineers are just as responsive and hard-working while being much easier to understand.

Compare to the competition, I found that Unitrends Data [Center] Backup and Recovery works without need for constant attention. It does not need high end hardware to run on, compared to the competition, also. Our VDP installation had to be rebuilt almost monthly. It came with a high IOPS requirement for its storage and 10GB networking was a must. Veeam was a little easier on those requirements, but changes made to some backup policy would result in the necessity of a full backup, again. This results in unnecessary delays and congestion.
Unitrends Data [Center] Backup and Recovery worked fine on our existing infrastructure with no fuss. It has all the features the competition has at a fraction of the cost. Reliability has been outstanding. This is how a backup solution should be!

Worked with Sungard Availability Services a few years back and they were much more flexible with managing archived data.

We selected the Unitrends Data Center [Backup and Recovery] because it integrated well with the Appliance and we can count on Unitrends support should issues arise. Going outside of Unitrends just didn't seem like a good idea because an admin would need to work with two different companies for resolution to issues and become a target of finger-pointing. We don't need to be wasting time and costs bouncing between multiple support reps.

We migrated from a couple of backup solutions to Unitrends primarily for a couple of key reasons, it supports just about every system a SMB could have deployed from Windows, Mac, Linux, NAS/SAN has a solid configuration and management system for MSPs to be able to manage and monitor via a single pane of glass, and is fairly hardware independent with being able to run a virtual appliance.

I selected Unitrends because of the flexibility of the product. I can backup using reliable image and host-level methods and replicate those backups anywhere I desire. This made Unitrends the right choice for us because we host our own "cloud" storage in an offsite datacenter. Other products force you to use their cloud, at a substantial premium price. Even the products I've used that allowed me to host my own offsite storage were overly complicated to implement, manage, and maintain.

I've used the product we had previously from Infrascale, it was an old product so it was outdated and did not have near the features of our Unitrends setup, for example we had to take our backups offsite manually/physically for full disaster recovery and we do not have to do that now. We also evaluated Veeam prior to purchasing Unitrends, Veeam was more affordable but lacked a few features at the time we were looking for such as cloud backup and automated backup testing and verification.

Backup Exec had become extremely bloated and showed its origins in the tape world. While it implemented VM based backups it still felt like it was trying to fit an old product into a new market. Cost was also not on par with Unitrends.

Day to day use I like Unitrends better than Veeam and many others I have tried, but the one that is starting to pull ahead for me is Axcient. Axcient is a great product at a great price. I have been testing many alternatives to replace Unitrends over the past year and Axcient is the only one that stacks up so far.

My biggest issue [is that I] wanted to get off Tapes and [I] looked [at] B2D Appliances Unitrends; [it] was one of the few that checked all the boxes.

[Other appliances] did not have many options for off site backup ([there was] no way to backup the [backups].

[With] Unitrends, if you need to meet [or use] [three] levels of backup, you can: use "on premise to Appliance", "secondary off site Appliance", and Off Site Backup to Vault," using Tape Library or RXDA (Removable HDD).

We still use Data Protector for some older servers that cannot be migrated to Unitrends and also in the past used Veritas.

I found Veritas the easiest to use. Unitrends does have a lot more features but can be complex to setup. Their support team is AMAZING and responds to any issues 24x7x365.

Prior to this, we did not have a true comprehensive, all-in-one backup solution. We had several systems, each with their own backup solution. AS/400(prior to virtualization) had its own tape system, individual server had their own tape system backups. Some systems even "backed" up data to NAS's. It was not ideal.

Honestly I don't remember what I previously used before, it has been too long of a time period since I used it. I like the interface of Unitrends, it is easy to navigate. Support is usually very prompt at getting back to me when I do have a question or problem.

I believe that we originally became a Unitrends customer as they purchased our existing vendor. Once we redeployed with a pair of Unitrends VM's our overall speed and reliability of our backups improved.
