Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We were managing 3 disparate backup/replication solutions: Veeam, Symantec's Backup Exec, and DoubleTake. The expense of maintaining coverage for these three was prohibitively expensive. We were stuck behind the curve with VMware 5.5 because our Veeam version was out of date and not covered (because they enticed us to purchase by throwing in the 'Enterprise Plus' level license - we did not realize we'd have to forklift downgrade to avoid the expensive renewal cost of Enterprise Plus). This ultimately forced our hand to move off of Veeam even though Veeam's product is solid.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We had to manage a storage vendor / solution, a replication vendor / solution a backup software vendor / solution previously. Now it is all in one. That said having one throat to choke as it were is best when the target is able to overcome any issue and successfully solve the issues at hand.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

The prior challenges we experienced was that our backups were on tape and it took for ever to restore a file and we didn't have a 100% successful recovery. The backups were basically useless. We could not backup a lot of data at once because of the speed of the tape. It really gave us a lot of sleepless nights.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Before UniTrends, we used Git as a backup of web XML files. We did tarballs of the entire Tomcat directory just in case. Over a period of time, storage starts becoming limited. And restoring from a tarball is not as seamless as one thinks it is.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Prior to using Unitrends we used Windows backup which wasn't ideal, while it did the job the features are very limited! Backing up to an SATA drive felt very old school so we moved to Unitrends to use the benefits of a new backup solution.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We used EMC Networker, which required the network application, storage, agents, and a virtual appliance to all be in sync with each other. If you needed to update one, you needed to update all of them. The UI was a mess and there was absolutely no replication. Unitrends simplified backup, made it easy to understand, and easy to upgrade, and easy to replicate.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Prior to selecting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance, we used other software company solutions, which were then installed on other manufacturers' hardware. We constantly fought issues with drivers and/or software updates, and firmware revisions. We eliminated that pain by using Unitrends. Unitrends produces, supports, and even monitors both the hardware and software sides of the equation. Best backup solution we have ever worked with.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

  1. Restoring from archives was very time consuming and unreliable at times
  2. We're able to manage back ups better with the new device without looking through written notes
  3. Servers were being overworked with our previous client. Unitrends is extremely light weight and does not bog down our servers the way Symantec did

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Before my time, this company used Backup Exec. They purchased Unitrends shortly before hiring me. Issues were of the more vanilla, "Are the backups good?", "Have we tested them?", and the seminal "What do you mean, the backups were corrupted?"

On all accounts, after retraining with Unitrends and setting up according to their best practices these issues are solved.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

The biggest issues we had previously using Symantec Backup Exec was the licensing. Anytime we added a system or a new type of OS backup, we needed to make sure we had the correct license to do it. Also all of the backups were handled differently, meaning that each type of backup and restore required a different process and configuration depending on the OS type.
If our backup system ever went down, the re-installation of the backup software was painful, as all of the licensing needed to be installed again one by one.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

We were struggling with backing up to multiple storage locations and taking home small NAS devices bi weekly. With multiple locations, it was a hassle to keep track of versioning. We were also out of support on an archaic backup suite. Unitrends gave us one enterprise platform that works on and off site.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Prior to implementing the Unitrends appliance backups were done using software running on each server, as the environment grew the cost of additional licenses was affecting the operational budgets. From a recovery viewpoint, there was inconsistency in the ability to recover certain types of files and recovery of long-term archive data was difficult and slow requiring use of tapes.

Before Unitrends I used tape. I am unable to go into specifics because of the emotional distress it causes me. Dark times indeed. I am a survivor thanks to Unitrends.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Constant re-occurring agent licensing and renewal was a real hassle. The backups would just stop working and we would spend time figuring out why only to find that the client agent expired. What a joke.

Also, the manufacturer of the software license upgrade we were stuck with went to a new interface that was confusing and lacked much of the functions we used to use. We limped along with this for a few years, spent a lot of time on the phone with tech support who apparently hated the software interface even more than we did. Fool me one shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. We needed something else and after checking around with other places, Unitrends had a great reputation and I'm so glad I invested the time researching it because we've been really happy with our decision.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Previously, we were using Backup Exec for backups. We frequently had failed backups, failed archive to tape jobs, and subsequently failed restores. While Backup Exec provides deduplication, the version we were on didn't seem to handle this well, and we were low on backup space much sooner than expected.

As we started moving from physical to virtual servers, we realized that Backup Exec was ill-equipped to handle our VM backup needs, and had to seek out another solution for these backups, adding complexity to the management of our backups.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

The challenges that we faced as an organization prior to Unitrends was the high monthly cost of our hosted backup solution. The more data we backuped and the longer we held on to that data equaled a high monthly cost. Unitrends allows us to have a local backup that contains several weeks of data, while at the same time providing an archive that gives us the ability to easily have long term storage.

Before Unitrends we had several backup companies and services running, Unitrends was able to take care of all our backup needs. Since deployment we have been able to cancel our old providers' services and even save money.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Our organization has had a very heterogeneous environment that consisted of Windows, Linux, and Netware. Backup solutions that could handle all of these systems were far and few. Unitrends stood out as a solution that could handle all of our recovery scenarios, and as we moved away from Netware, Unitrends played a vital role in ensuring that everything was safe and sound during the migration process. Now that our environment is highly virtualized, Unitrends continues to play a central role in meeting our backup objectives.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Symantec Backup Exec did not always work, and its backups were not reliable. One backup was corrupt when I attempted to restore it and it was completely useless. Backup jobs often would continue into production hours thus putting an extra load on the network and servers. We had numerous issues and Symantec's support was not helpful nor attentive to our business critical needs.

Challenges Prior to Adopting Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

Prior to Unitrends we used the tried and true backup to tape library system. If this were the late 1990's we would be fine but, it is not. We ran into time and space constraints that did not allow us to back up or recover information quickly or easily. We were constantly shuffling tapes and losing precious time. If backups were waiting for a tape change then all the backups behind it were waiting. Once we got an appliance that allowed for larger amounts of storage and multiple backups to run, then life got a lot easier.
